Florida to host CPL matches under lights

The first six Caribbean Premier League matches to be played on US soil will include two games under floodlights at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida as well as two weekend doubleheaders to round out the league phase of the tournament, from July 28 to 31.The CPL organizers announced plans last month to stage six matches in Florida for the upcoming season and sources had told ESPNcricinfo that the games would be held at some point in the final two weeks of July. An advanced copy of the schedule obtained by ESPNcricinfo shows that Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Tridents will feature in the first match in Florida to be played under lights, on Thursday, July 28. The following day, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots will take on Trinbago Knight Riders under lights again.Night matches at the stadium are a major change after the ICC-certified facility initially failed to get clearance in 2010 to have T20Is between New Zealand and Sri Lanka played under floodlights due to a design flaw. The floodlights at the stadium were originally installed too close to the field, creating excessive shadows which were deemed a safety hazard for night time cricket. As a result, both those matches as well as the T20I series in 2012 between New Zealand and West Indies were scheduled for the day time. However, a series of upgrades and facility renovations were carried out at the stadium in 2013, including a relaying of the turf square. ESPNcricinfo also understands that the stadium floodlight towers were dug up and repositioned to reduce the shadow effect in order to allow for night time cricket to be played at the professional level.Saturday, July 30, will feature a daytime doubleheader starting at 12 noon local time between St Lucia Zouks and Jamaica Tallawahs, followed by Tridents against Amazon Warriors. The final day of the group stage on Sunday, July 31 will have another slate starting at noon, beginning with Knight Riders and Patriots, followed by Tallawahs against Zouks. As for local connections in the rosters, Tridents keeper-batsman Steven Taylor grew up in Miramar, just 18 miles south of the stadium in Lauderhill and turns out regularly to play club cricket in the Florida Southeast Cricket League (FSCL). Recent Tallawahs draftee Timroy Allen is also a Florida resident, though he is based a few hundred miles further north in Orlando.

Davies, Roy pull off scintillating chase

Kevin Pietersen was able to watch delightedly from a Surrey dressing room that has given him unstinting support as Steven Davies and Jason Roy spearheaded a startling seven-wicket Division Two victory against shell-shocked Leicestershire at the Kia Oval.Davies reached a superb hundred off only 57 balls, finishing with 115 not out from 69 balls with four sixes and eleven fours.Needing 216 from 24 overs after finally finishing off a resilient Leicestershire second innings for 480 in the fifth over after tea, Surrey romped home with 16 balls to spare on the back of a thrilling assault by Davies and Roy, who flayed 67 from 39 balls.Kumar Sangakkara then came in to hit his first two balls for four and although he fell for 12 it hardly slowed the Surrey chase with Gary Wilson and then Rory Burns helping Davies to propel Surrey to their victory target.Although it was Pietersen’s epic first innings 355 not out that had put Surrey into a winning position at the halfway mark, his strokeplay was not needed second time around as Roy and Davies launched themselves at the Leicestershire bowling to put on 145 for the first wicket in just 11.1 overs.Sixes and fours flew from their flashing blades and Roy and Davies brought up Surrey’s 50 in the fifth over and the 100 in the eighth. At the ten-over mark Surrey were 133 without loss and victory was all but assured when Roy was caught on the cover boundary in the 12th over after hitting four sixes and six fours. The excellent Oval batting pitch, which had earlier so frustrated Surrey when they were trying to winkle out the last five Leicestershire wickets, now gave the visiting bowlers little chance of containing Surrey’s destructive top three – especially with a short boundary on one side of the ground.Davies completed his fifty from just 24 balls – four balls less than it had taken Roy – and the left-hander displayed all the flair which has won him 13 limited-overs international appearances for England in a career which has stalled somewhat in recent years.Surrey’s first championship win of the season earned them a maximum 24 points, while Leicestershire took just five points for what is their 20th defeat in 36 win-less championship games since September 2012.And yet Leicestershire came so close to denying Surrey on a final day which, until the dramatic and thrilling finish, had seemed increasingly certain to end in a draw. This defeat will hurt them badly, because at tea – when they were 470 for 8 – they must have thought they had done enough to keep Surrey’s bowlers at bay.But Jigar Naik, who had batted for 102 minutes for 30, was caught at slip off Gareth Batty’s off spin and then, five balls later, Rob Taylor – his partner in a ninth wicket stand that had brought 62 in 28 overs of defiance – edged Zafar Ansari to keeper Gary Wilson after scoring 42 from 119 balls in two and a half hours.Ansari, the 23-year-old whose slow left-arm spin is rapidly improving, took a career-best 6 for 152 from 51.1 overs of hard toil. Ansari and Batty, who took 2 for 100 from 46 overs, bore the brunt of the bowling responsibilities in the absence through injury of fast bowler Chris Tremlett, who could only send down seven overs in Leicestershire’s long second innings. The day began with Leicestershire only 45 runs ahead on 310 for 5 but Niall O’Brien turned his overnight 38 into a fighting 78, from 178 balls, and although he lost Ben Raine in the 11th over of the morning, leg-before to Ansari, he immediately found another stubborn partner in Clint McKay.Raine’s 33 had helped O’Brien to add 72 for the sixth wicket, and 51 more runs came in alliance with McKay before O’Brien drove Tom Curran straight to short extra cover.McKay batted almost two hours for 41, and when he was leg-before to Ansari it seemed as if Taylor and Naik would be equal to the task of guiding Leicestershire to safety. It was not to be, however, and Pietersen, who did not field all day because of a calf strain which required a scan, could at least celebrate a Surrey victory in what might yet be his last first-class match.

England prevail in tight finish

Needing 18 from the last three overs, England held their nerve to chase down 220 and sneak in a two-wicket win in the first Youth ODI against Australia in Bunbury

ScorecardNeeding 18 from the last three overs, England Under-19s held their nerve to chase down 220 and sneak in to a two-wicket win in the first Youth ODI against Australia Under-19s in Bunbury. Debutant Ben Green (20*) finished the chase with another debutant, Will Davis (3*), with three balls to spare.Having opted to bat, Australia were reduced to 48 for 3 inside ten overs, after which Sam Heazlett and Jake Doran added 49 for the fourth wicket to briefly stabilise the innings. The partnership ended when legspinner Mason Crane had Heazlett stumped for 22. Even as England continued to chip away at the wickets, Doran carried on and made 82 off 100 balls, before he became the third of Callum Taylor’s four victims. However, England conceded as many as 29 extras, including 19 wides, which helped Australia reach 219 in 48.4 overs.England’s top-order did not fare any better but a 72-run stand between Aneurin Donald and Mosun Hussain put them back on track. Hussain anchored the chase with 76 off 97 balls, but his dismissal led to a lower-order wobble as the visitors went from 185 for 5 to 207 for 8. Green then took charge, scrambling 20 off 12 balls as England prevailed in a tight finish.

Sangakkara applies sleeper hold to Sussex

Watching Kumar Sangakkara bat could never be described as a chore but his grit was of material value to Durham as they quietly applied the sleeper hold to Sussex for their fourth draw of the season.

ScorecardKumar Sangakkara made his first century for his temporary county•Getty ImagesWatching Kumar Sangakkara make a hundred could never be described as a chore, even though some prefer the more delicate strokeplay of his long-time Sri Lanka batting buddy, Mahela Jayawardene. Sangakkara has a little bit more of the streetfighter about him and, although Hove is perhaps not a cauldron of enmity for visiting opponents, his grit was of material value to Durham as they quietly applied the sleeper hold to Sussex for their fourth draw of the season.Paul Collingwood, Durham’s captain, was happy to allow Sangakkara an extended centre-wicket practice session, having declined Sussex’s offer of an innings forfeiture to set up a run chase. That would have meant Durham attempting to get 369 in 96 overs but Collingwood was happy to pursue a few more bonus points and preserve his team’s unbeaten record – even if that means the champions remaining uncomfortably close to the bottom of Division One.Mark Robinson confirmed that Sussex “wanted to have a game” but he was respectful of the polite snub. He was a little more perturbed about not being able to field Chris Jordan for the second match running. Jordan was ruled out of last week’s trip to Old Trafford due to his involvement in the Scotland ODI and the ECB asked for him to sit out this match as well due to a concern about over-bowling.Sussex have back-to-back T20 games at the weekend, before England’s players link up again ahead of the Sri Lanka series. Jordan took part in a 2nd XI T20 fixture on Wednesday, specifically to practise his death bowling, and Robinson described him as a rhythm bowler who performs better when he is playing regularly, although he was pragmatic about the situation.”Peter Moores is the England coach, he’s trying to protect an asset, I want my asset playing here to win a game,” he said. “The county game needs its best players playing, where possible. At times it won’t be possible.”In Robinson’s words, Sangakkara was “the biggest winner out of the day”. His 159, spread over six hours and many more minutes in the dressing room while the rain fell on Tuesday, was his highest first-class score in England, surpassing two centuries for Warwickshire against Durham in 2007 and 153 in a tour match at Chelmsford three years ago. His only Test hundred in this country also came in 2011, a match-saving 119 in Southampton, and this short-term spell in county cricket has been aimed at improving on a mediocre record here.He has been keen to express his gratitude to Durham for their part in the deal and the brief time spent sharing knowledge with young team-mates in the dressing room will doubtless have been beneficial. This innings was also the main plank in securing Durham four batting points – though they fell short of the maximum haul during the 11-ball scramble for eight more runs that followed his dismissal. There was much for a generous-minded crowd to applaud when Sangakkara finally fell on the stroke of tea, reward for Steve Magoffin, who had seen him dropped in the slips on 20 the previous day. Sangakkara had steadily grown in fluency, with his first fifty taking 116 balls (and being completed around 24 hours after his innings began); the next took 76 and the final 55.Sangakkara now has a few grey strands in among his black tousled hair – perhaps that was why Scott Borthwick referred to him as a “cricket badger” after their century stand on the third day – and this was a wise old knock. Every time he was beaten, or dropped the hands to nullify an edge, he recalibrated his batting senses and got back on with the job at hand. Luke Wright was breezily flicked for six, Ashar Zaidi clubbed a little more ruthlessly over the short, leg-side boundary. His footwork was sure and his striking, for the most part, crisp. His partnership with Collingwood was worth 144 in less than 30 overs as Durham hit the accelerator after losing Borthwick, for his overnight 84, and Michael Richardson. Collingwood unpacked his boxfresh cover drive again, at one point hitting six boundaries in 11 balls, though he had no regrets about declining Sussex’s offer. “I thought it was a bit early in the season to go hunting for victories,” he said. His mood was further improved by the suggestion that Graham Onions’ back problem may not be as bad as first feared. He said that the “scans look positive” after Onions’ trip to see a specialist and the seamer could be fit to play again after an injection.Although the poor weather that sluiced away much of the previous two days was chiefly responsible for condemning this game to a draw, the pitch was a willing accomplice. By the end, Ben Brown was having his first-ever bowl in senior cricket, with Michael Yardy filling in behind the stumps. Without the sight of Sangakkara to enjoy, most joined the surface in nodding off to sleep.

Modi involved in rebel county plans – BCCI

The alleged plans to launch a rebel Twenty20 league in England have been brought back to the fore during Lalit Modi’s disciplinary hearing

David Hopps06-Sep-2013The furious stand-off between the ECB chairman Giles Clarke, Lalit Modi, the former IPL commissioner, and the global sports and media business IMG, over alleged talks about a rebel Twenty20 league in England has been stripped bare in the report of a BCCI disciplinary committee.Modi has been found guilty on eight charges of “various acts of indiscipline and misconduct” during his time in charge of IPL and he is expected to face recommendations of a life ban at a special general meeting of the BCCI on September 25.But it is previously unseen details of alleged emails between Modi, IMG and key administrators in English county cricket which will be read closely by those interested in the feverish debate which sounded three years ago about the future of Twenty20 in England.Clarke’s allegations that Modi and IMG were involved in embryonic plans to launch a rebel T20 league in England were denied by both parties and the protracted legal claims and counter-claims that followed were eventually settled out of court.Any introduction of a T20 franchise operation in England – which became known as Project Victoria – would have transformed professional cricket in England and left the game facing the most unpredictable period in its history.Instead, the ECB, with Clarke at the forefront, has reasserted its rule over professional cricket in England and has confirmed plans next season for a revamped T20 tournament based on all 18 first-class counties to be played over most of the summer, largely on Friday nights. The league has been presented as a solution which takes regard of England’s traditions, weather and potential, but critics argue it as unambitious and fear that it will not attract overseas players because it is played over such a prolonged period. The BCCI disciplinary report outlines an alleged plan “to create a rebel 20:20 league in England without the involvement of English Cricket Board by targeting weak and cash starved counties.”For the first time, a series of emails between administrators and IMG representatives have entered the public domain, with the BCCI disciplinary committee concluding: “It states that membership has been obtained of counties that are financially vulnerable and potential acquisition targets. The said counties are Kent, Essex, Middlesex, Northants, Derbyshire and Leicestershire as potential acquisition targets.”Under Project Victoria, according to further emails, the 18 counties could be amalgamated for the purposes of T20 into eight franchises. Scotland would also be considered as, according to one email exchange, “there were a lot of Indians in Glasgow”.The BCCI disciplinary committee concluded: “We are convinced that by being part of a plan to create a new T-20 League in England by targeting weak counties, which Mr Modi knew was outside the ECB’s knowledge and umbrella, Mr Modi endangered the harmony between the BCCI and the ECB. We hold that the charge is proved against Mr Modi on this count.”Clarke protested to the Indian board once he learned of a meeting in Mumbai between Modi and a party of county chief executives representing four Test match counties: Yorkshire, Lancashire, Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire.Modi’s written submission stated that county representatives “were all frustrated about the lack of vision at the ECB and they wanted some form of ideas to stimulate discussion back home. However, no deal was offered or proposed. They simply talked about ideas and the respondent told them what was obvious: there was an opportunity in England to create an EPL.”Many county representatives involved, however tentatively, in confidential discussions about the future of Twenty20 in England have since moved on or have had to work hard to repair relationships with the higher echelons of the ECB.
