Liverpool fans criticise Sterling’s performance for England

[ad_pod ]

It is safe to say that most Liverpool fans have failed to move on from Raheem Sterling’s controversial exit three years ago.

The 23-year-old decided to abandon the Merseyside outfit for pastures new in a big-money move to Manchester City.

Since making the jump, Sterling has won the Premier League title and the League Cup, and he is fighting against Liverpool for another English crown this season.

A sense of bitterness still remains in the hearts of some Reds supporters, and that was evident on Sunday when the winger represented England.

Sterling played the full 90 minutes of the Three Lions’ 2-1 victory over Croatia in a Nations League encounter at Wembley.

The attack-minded star has before struggled to recreate his club form on the international stage, and plenty of Liverpool fans were unimpressed by his efforts.

So far this season, Sterling has scored seven goals and created five assists in 15 outings in all competitions.

The Playmaker FC squad decided to wind-up some unsuspecting Brazil fans at the Emirates on Saturday night. Watch the hilarious results in the video below…

Opinion: Leicester City must tie down Maguire to a new contract before the next transfer window

Harry Maguire was the match-winner in Leicester City’s 2-1 win over Southampton on Saturday after a summer of speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United.

Maguire, who fired past Alex McCarthy from outside of the box in the 92nd minute to give Leicester all three points, had become Manchester United’s primary target in the transfer market after a deal to bring Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld to Old Trafford became too complicated to complete (via Sky Sports).

However, Leicester were able to fight off the Red Devils’ advances for the central defender with Maguire confirming the club had reiterated to him he was not for sale at any price (via Leicestershire Mercury).

£40.5m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Maguire was one of England’s star performers at this summer’s World Cup, so it was unsurprising to see the 25-year-old generate interest during the transfer window given his displays at the tournament.

Leicester, though, should not feel home and dry yet with Maguire still likely to be an attractive target in January or next summer, and not just to Manchester United.

Chelsea were in the market for a centre-back prior to the beginning of the new season but failed in their pursuit of Juventus’ Daniele Rugani (via Evening Standard), while there are still doubts to whether Dejan Lovren is of the standard to partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

With that in mind, it would not come as a shock if either club made a move for Maguire next year.

Maguire’s ability to pass out from the back and bring the ball out of defence so effectively makes him the ideal centre-back for managers such as Maurizio Sarri and Jurgen Klopp.

Furthermore, the King Power hierarchy must tie down Maguire to a new deal before the Premier League top six come sniffing.

Rangers fans do not want to see Caixinha select Cardoso vs St Johnstone

We’re less than two hours away from a fine weekend of Scottish Premiership action kicking off as Rangers travel to Perth to take on St Johnstone in Friday night action.

It’s been a long international break without club football and tonight’s encounter is a mouth-watering affair, after a week of back and forth comments between the home side and the Light Blues.

With both teams also on equal points, it could be a very competitive ninety minutes that will thrill the neutral as much as anyone.

For Rangers supporters, they just want the three points, looking to continue from where they left off against Hamilton before the break.

Inconsistency has again been a problem for Pedro Caixinha’s team this season and fans are desperate for a few wins in succession to try and close the gap on Aberdeen and Celtic above them.

It’s vital he gets his team selection right and Rangers fans have been vocal about one man they don’t want to see in the team – central defender Fabio Cardoso.

The 23-year-old has looked pretty shaky in recent matches and with the emergence of youngster Ross McCrorie and the potential return of Bruno Alves, it seems that supporters would like to see him dropped for the visit to Saints.

They took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Caixinha’s potential line-up…

Everton fans hail Gueye as most important summer signing

A handful of Everton fans have made it clear who their favourite signing has been this season.

The Merseyside outfit tweeted the link to an interview with Gueye, who spoke to the club’s official website about the inspiration behind his first season with the Toffees.

Fans responded to the tweet by singing the praises of the midfielder, who joined the club from Aston Villa last year.

His name does not tend to make the headlines in the back pages, but Gueye has been an impressive addition to Ronald Koeman’s team.

The 27-year-old has played in 26 Premier League games this season, adding a defensive steel to the middle of the park.

Gueye has even contributed with a goal and an assist in the top flight for the Toffees, who currently reside seventh in the league table.

After the interview was published fans took to Twitter to shower the midfielder with praise, and some described him as the club’s best player of this campaign.

Three reasons why Man United should take the Europa League seriously

Manchester United’s first real game under Jose Mourinho ended in a convincing 3-1 win over Bournemouth. If that’s anything to go by, it will be an exciting period for United fans.

The first half wasn’t the most joined-up and fluent period of football that Manchester United have ever experienced, but like all new managers, Mourinho will need time to get things right.

With the team still to welcome Paul Pogba into the fold, as well as potential new recruits to add to squad depth, Manchester United will only get better.

The only downside to this season is United’s involvement in the Europa League instead of the Champions League. Last season, defeat to bitter rivals Liverpool after having to come back from behind to beat Danish side Midtjylland was both frustrating and humiliating for one of the biggest clubs in the world, and one that can count three European Cups in the trophy cabinet.

But rather than see the Europa League as a monument to the failure of the Louis van Gaal era, it should be seen as a chance to win a trophy.

Sir Alex Ferguson never won the UEFA Cup / Europa League, and that probably stands more in his favour than it does against him. But Porto’s UEFA Cup victory in 2003 launched Jose Mourinho’s career, before he won the Champions League a year later. Maybe this year Manchester United should take it that bit more seriously.

Here are three reasons why…

Chance at the Champions League

You simply don’t know what’s going to happen this season. The Premier League has top quality managers seeping out its ears and nose, there are big name players everywhere, and even though the quality is very high – and it’s arguably higher at Manchester United than anywhere else – some teams have to lose out on the top four.

If United do experience a difficult spell later in the season, they could end up finishing 5th again without really having played all that badly. So many teams are good enough to take advantage of any slip up.

And if they are in that position by February, they’ll surely be wishing they had another route back into the Champions League by winning the Europa League

It’s a Trophy!

Whilst Champions League qualification is the gilded carrot of an incentive for teams to take the Europa League seriously, it is a competition in its own right.

Football should be about glory and victory more than it should be about fulfilling objective Football Manager style. The Europa League is a chance for silverware, and United should take that seriously – they’ve only won one trophy in three years, after all.

It’s a stepping stone

When Jose Mourinho ran down the touchline at Old Trafford in celebration of Costinha’s winning goal in a Champions League last 16 second leg, he did so as a UEFA Cup-holding manager.

His Porto side beat Martin O’Neill’s Celtic in the 2003 UEFA Cup final, and it was that victory that Porto could use as a springboard to go all the way in the next season’s Champions League.

Jose Mourinho knows exactly how this feels, even if Manchester United don’t. So taking the Europa League seriously could see the group get a taste of European victory, and more importantly, get the experience to follow it through next season.

Oscar Gloukh: Why Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal are battling over the Red Bull Salzburg wonderkid who rejected a transfer to Barcelona

The Israel playmaker has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence, and could earn a move to the Premier League if he continues on his current trajectory

Red Bull Salzburg have an impressive track record when it comes to moulding talented young players. Sadio Mane, Erling Haaland, Dominik Szoboszlai and Karim Adeyemi all honed their skills at the Austrian club before stepping onto the elite stage – and Oscar Gloukh has every chance of following in their footsteps.

At just 19 years of age, Gloukh is being heralded as one of the brightest prospects in Europe, and for good reason. The former Maccabi Tel Aviv attacker, who is already a full Israel international, has made an instant impact at Red Bull Arena under the tutelage of Gerhard Struber – showing a maturity belying his young age.

Gloukh is putting himself on the map with his outstanding performances for Salzburg, with Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal all being credited with an interest in his services ahead of the January transfer window. But what exactly is it that makes the teenager so special? GOAL takes a look below…

  • Where it all began

Gloukh was born in the City of Rehovot, 12 miles outside of Tel Aviv. His father, Maxim, emigrated from Russia to Israel as a 13-year-old, and did not encourage his son's love of football initially.

As a five-year-old, Oscar would take part in four-on-four matches against boys twice his age to sharpen his skills. Maxim eventually accepted an invitation to watch Oscar in action, and quickly realised that he had a unique talent he could no longer ignore.

"I spent every day, all the time I had in the street playing with friends. I was really small and really young," Gloukh said in a recent interview with the . "When I was five, my father didn’t want me to be a professional footballer. He was told he needed to see me play and he came along. He was surprised. He said to me: 'If we want to go in on this, we need to go 100 per cent, all in'."

Gloukh would go on to earn a place in Maccabi Tel Aviv’s academy and play for Israel from Under-16s all the way through to U21 level. He was able to back up his immense talent with hard work, which led to him making his senior debut at the age of 17 – in August 2021.

Maccabi Tel Aviv couldn't mark the occasion with a victory, as they were knocked out of the Israeli Toto Cup on penalties by Hapoel Jerusalem, but Gloukh made a lasting impression after coming on as a 62nd-minute substitute and converted his spot-kick in the shootout.

    The big break

Gloukh had to bide his time for a chance to shine in the Israeli Premier League, but it finally came in April 2022 against his club's fiercest rivals, Maccabi Haifa. Maccabi Tel Aviv fans were soon cheering whenever the teenager got on the ball as he constantly made himself available and took it upon himself to drive his team forward. And with only 28 minutes on the clock, Gloukh was the man who forced the breakthrough.

After receiving a pass on the edge of the box, the diminutive attacker sidestepped his marker with ease and set himself before letting fly, and his fierce effort found it's way into the back of the net with the help of a fortunate deflection. That goal very nearly secured a huge victory for Tel Aviv, but Tjaronn Cherry ultimately spoiled the party with an equaliser for the visitors in second-half stoppage time.

Still, the pressure of a derby clash in front of a capacity crowd at Bloomfield Stadium hadn't fazed Gloukh in the slightest. Quizzed on the difference between playing academy football and making his maiden first-team appearance in such a hostile atmosphere, he told reporters after the game: "For me, it is the same — you just have more people in the stands and afterwards you asked me to speak on TV!"

It's that level of composure, and indeed arrogance, that can often separate the very best players from their peers. Gloukh used those tools to great effect for Israel a couple of months later at the U19 European Championships, scoring three goals in five appearances. He even won the Goal of the Tournament prize for his effort in the final against England, as he deceived two defenders in the box with his sublime close-quarter dribbling skills before firing the ball low into the bottom corner of the net. Israel ended up losing the game 3-1, but Gloukh had announced himself to a global audience.

Scouts then started to attend Gloukh's games regularly in the first half of the 2022-23 season, and a big move became inevitable as he recorded 12 goal contributions in his first 17 league appearances for Tel Aviv while breaking into Israel's senior squad.

Sure enough, Salzburg swooped for his services in the winter transfer window, snapping him up for €7 million on a four-and-a-half year contract. It would turn out out to be one of the bargain deals of the entire year.

    How it's going

Salzburg were not the only club to make a move for Gloukh. La Liga giants Barcelona had also been keeping tabs on the youngster, and made a late January swoop for his services. Gloukh did not pursue a last-minute change in career path, though, having already decided that Salzburg was the best place for him to unlock his full potential. "I was very excited that (Barcelona) wanted me, but they were late for the bidding and came back when we had already closed the Salzburg deal," he said. "In the end, I think we made the right decision to go to Salzburg and not to Barcelona. It makes more sense for my development as a player."

Matthias Jaissle didn't throw Gloukh into his matchday squad at Salzburg until mid-February, but he gradually found his feet and scored his first goal for the club in a 3-0 Austrian Bundesliga victory over Klagenfurt on April 2. The Israeli star doubled his account in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Austria Vienna the following week, and ultimately helped the the club clinch their 10th-successive domestic crown.

Former Austria Vienna and Borussia Dortmund boss Peter Stoger was among those to praise Gloukh for his instant impact at Red Bull Arena, telling : "This is an extraordinary player. From the category of someone who can assess situations very well and has quick solutions. Also for his age, there’s a lot in there. He’s an exciting boy. I would be surprised if he doesn't bring a lot of money into Salzburg's coffers in the next few years. I think he can have a really great career."

Israel included Gloukh in their U21 European Championship squad in the summer, and he spearheaded their run to the semi-finals. He tasted defeat against England once again, but caught the eye with a number of magical moments in the 3-0 loss, and has gone up another level since returning to his club.

Gloukh made his Champions League debut in Salzburg's first group-stage outing of the 2023-24 season against Benfica, and scored early in the second half to round of a surprise away victory – becoming the youngest Israeli player to ever score in the competition in the process.

Salzburg, who drafted in Gerhard Struber as their new manager after Jaissle's summer exit, were unable to build on that result, with Real Sociedad beating them 2-0 at Red Bull Arena before home and away losses against Inter. But Gloukh was the man who gave them brief hope of progress once again on matchday three at San Siro as he cancelled out Alexis Sanchez' opening goal with a sublime equaliser in the 57th minute, curling an unstoppable first-time shot into the top corner after a lung-busting effort to get into the box.

The Salzburg talisman also has two goals and three assists to his name in the Austrian Bundesliga already in 2023-24, which explains why he is now being strongly linked with a move to the Premier League.

    Biggest strengths

Gloukh is such a nightmare for defenders because he is great with both feet and comfortable playing in a variety of different positions. The Israel starlet tends to do the most damage in a No.10 role, but can also operate as a false nine, traditional centre-midfielder or even as a winger.

It's impossible to pin him down, and he has a knack for occupying small pockets of space to pick up the ball and drive forward. Gloukh dribbles with a low centre of gravity, too, which allows him to change direction quickly and unbalance his opponents.

There is no doubt that Salzburg have one of the most exciting players in European football on their hands. There are very few players with a footballing IQ as high as Gloukh's, in and out possession, and there is no limit to what he can achieve if he continues on his current trajectory.

“He presents a great learning curve. He’s a high-profile player and he understands how he’s supposed to play without the ball. We’re very pleased with his development," Struber told in October.

A Ponte Preta entra motivada.

Favorito: Santos

RED BULL BRAGANTINO X CORINTHIANS

Favorito: Red Bull Bragantino

William (Palmeiras) e Junior Toddynho (Guarani) têm seis. Boselli (Corinthians) e Pablo (São Paulo) aparecem com cinco.

Robben, Baggio & the 10 most iconic misses in World Cup history

The World Cup is loved for the glorious goals on show but it has witnessed its fair share of incredible misses. Goal runs down the best of the latter

    10Rob Rensenbrink | Netherlands | 1978

After losing the 1974 final to West Germany, an iconic Netherlands team returned to the big stage four years later desperate to wipe away the title as the best team never to have won the tournament.

Once again, however, Oranje met the host nation at the final hurdle and saw their dream snatched away from them.

Argentina took a first-half lead, but the Dutch pulled level in 82 minutes to turn the momentum of the game and almost rode the wave to victory in the last minute when Rob Rensenbrink chased down the ball in the box and knocked it past goalkeeper Ubaldo Fillol. Dutch hearts skipped a beat as it bounced towards goal, but the effort hit the post and the Argentine defence cleared the danger.

The match went into extra time, where the South Americans scored two more to win the crown.

    9Chris Waddle | England | 1990

England’s best performance at the World Cup since winning came to an excruciating end when West Germany sent them crashing out on penalties.

The Three Lions put in a solid display in the semi-final and were worthy of Gary Lineker’s 80th minute equaliser took the game into extra-time and then penalties.

The first six penalties were converted, but Stuart Pearce saw his effort saved, allowing the Germans to take the lead through Olaf Thon.

It came down to Chris Waddle to save England’s chances, but the winger sent his effort over the bar, sending the Germans through to the final, where they beat Argentina 1-0.

  • Getty

    8Gonzalo Higuain | Argentina | 2014

Gonzalo Higuain could hardly believe his luck when a golden opportunity bounced into his path 20 minutes into the World Cup final in 2014. The Argentina striker was still far behind the Germany defence and heading back onside before Toni Kroos’ misjudged header sparked him into action.

Higuain ran onto it and was free of the chasing defenders as he set himself up to smash it towards goal, but he must have felt he should have taken a touch as his mis-hit went bouncing wide of Manuel Neuer’s goal.

Albiceleste team-mates Lionel Messi and Rodrigo Palacio would go on to miss great chances of their own later in the game, but Higuain’s inability to score on big occasions quickly made him a target of criticism.

    7Pele | Brazil | 1970

Pele is credited with over 1200 goals in a career that cemented him as one of the best players football has ever seen, yet one of his most iconic moments was a glaring miss in the 1970 World Cup.

It was a moment of pure genius from the Brazilian as he galloped on to Tostao’s pass, but instead of taking a touch around encroaching goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz, Pele deceived him with a dummy and ran around to meet it on the other side. The attacker scooped the ball towards goal, but saw it bounce just past the post.

As Brazil were already 3-1 up and went on to win the tournament, it was no decisive miss, yet it has gone down as one of the greatest goals that never was and an iconic moment in World Cup history.

Rogério Caboclo e Fernando Sarney representaram a CBF.
