Crystal Palace fans fume at Britt Assombalonga rumour

[ad_pod ]

Middlesbrough fan site One Boro, via Boro Breakdown, has alleged that striker Britt Assombalonga could be on his way to Crystal Palace, and Eagles fans on Twitter have been left fuming by the rumour.

The south London outfit look to firmly be in the market for a new centre-forward following Alexander Sorloth’s loan exit, with CSKA Moscow’s Fedor Chalov and RB Leipzig’s Jean-Kevin Augustin just two names that have been mentioned in recent days.

However, One Boro, via Boro Breakdown, have now claimed that the 26-year-old Championship attacker Assombalonga could be the man to come in and compete with Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham, as things stand.

The former Peterborough United man has never played in the Premier League, but he has scored 61 goals in 158 matches in England’s second tier – including 14 last term and one on Friday night against Luton Town.

However, Eagles supporters on the popular social media platform are far from enamoured with the link to the Boro man, with one even saying “I’d cancel Sorloth’s loan over this”, which shows how unpopular this potential move would be with the criticism the Norway international has received in the past.

Kalvin Phillips is better than Leeds target Ander Iturraspe according to these stats

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

After his incredible 2018/19 season, Kalvin Phillips has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs. Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Norwich have all apparently been looking at the defensive midfielder.

With all of this speculation, Leeds have been thinking about other options in Phillips’ position, and one name that has continuously cropped up is Ander Iturraspe. The Whites were linked with the Spaniard back in March (AS (11/03), reported via Sport Witness), but his recent comments may indicate that a move could be on the horizon.

If Iturraspe joined the Whites they would be getting an experienced player from La Liga, but his recent performances may show that he isn’t as good as Phillips.

The above image takes stats from Iturraspe’s most recent full La Liga campaign as he made just three appearances last term, and compares them to Phillips’ incredible 2018/19 season.

As you can see in the infographic, the 5 ft 10 man outshines the Spaniard in multiple areas.

In terms of defensive output, the 23-year-old is clearly the better option that Iturraspe.

He completes almost twice as many tackles per game, and when playing as the holding midfielder in Bielsa’s 4-1-4-1 formation that is vital.

Of course, in his younger years, Iturraspe played under Bielsa, but even then his tackling numbers aren’t quite at the level of Phillips’ last season as he made just 2.1 and 1.9 tackles per game during his two seasons under the Argentine.

In terms of winning aerial battles, Phillips also trumps the 30-year-old, which is another crucial component in the English leagues.

It’s not only the defensive output where the current Leeds man is triumphant. He takes four times as many shots as the Bilbao midfielder per game, and plays almost 20 more passes per match.

Perhaps the only area of Phillips’ game that Leeds would want to change is his disciplinary record, but Iturraspe actually picks up more yellow cards per 90 mins than the Englishman, too.

Beyond a joke now: Man United fans respond to Kimpembe speculation

[ad_pod ]

According to Soccer Link, Manchester United are considering a swoop for Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Presnel Kimpembe in this summer’s transfer window.

The 23-year-old came through the youth system at PSG and has made 112 appearances for the French giants in all competitions.

Soccer Link have named United, Chelsea and Arsenal as potential suitors for the Frenchman ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

However, it would be fair to say that the majority of United fans do not believe that their club will be signing Kimpembe this summer, almost branding the transfer report fake news.

It is generally accepted that the Red Devils will be moving for a new centre-back due to their defensive troubles last season.

However, it remains to be seen whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side can get a deal over the line before the end of the transfer window.

All or nothing: Liverpool may have one more serious title shot with potential Salah exit

[ad_pod ]

According to The Mirror, Mohamed Salah was tempted by a move to Real Madrid or Italian champions Juventus but will now stick with Liverpool and reassess the situation next summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Los Blancos and Juventus were reportedly preparing £150m offers for the Liverpool talisman this summer, which tempted the Egyptian.

However, he now looks set to reevaluate the situation next summer as he feels the timing would not be right to leave Anfield just after securing the Champions League title – the Reds’ sixth major European Cup.

You can relive Liverpool’s Champions League celebrations in glorious 2D thanks to the guys at 442oons in the video below…

Jurgen Klopp was aware of the interest and is said to have held talks with the club’s hierarchy over the threat of Salah’s potential exit, although a similar conversation will not need to be had for at least another 12 months now.

Sadio Mane is also of interest to some top European sides, but both him and Salah are happy to stay for the 2019/20 season and are reportedly keen to end the club’s 30-year wait for a league title.

It could be Liverpool’s last chance

Make no mistake about it – Salah is Liverpool’s clutch player when it comes to Premier League football.

The former Basel man hit a record-breaking 32 goals in his first league campaign as a Liverpool player, setting a new record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season.

Salah has also won the Reds numerous points on his own, and it goes without saying that a title push last term and a top four finish the year before wouldn’t have been possible without the little Egyptian.

So, with the 27-year-old set to stay for at least another year, next term may be Liverpool’s best chance to win the league for some time if Salah does eventually leave next summer.

It will become substantially harder to win the league if they lose the diminutive forward, a player who is hitting numbers close to Lionel Messi’s – he is irreplaceable and a title challenge will be immeasurably harder without him.

2019/20 could be the last serious shot at the title for Liverpool for some time if Salah does decide to depart next summer.

Opinion: Crystal Palace have huge chance to improve on dismal 2018/2019 home start

[ad_pod ]

It would be Saturday 1 December before Crystal Palace first tasted victory at home in the Premier League during the 2018/2019 season.

That vital Selhurst Park win came against a struggling Burnley team and allowed Eagles fans everywhere to breathe a collective sigh of relief as they finally picked up three points on their own patch before Christmas.

That campaign, Roy Hodgson’s men were dealt a particularly taxing run of home matches in the first few months, having to face and falling to defeat to the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, and also clashing with Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, some of the blame for the dismal start to the term in south London had to lay at Palace’s own door as they either lost or failed to beat teams such as Southampton or Newcastle United.

Whilst it was hardly comparable with the infamous start under Frank de Boer and Hodgson in 2017/2018, it made things needlessly difficult for the South Londoners throughout the season.

While they were never really fully sucked into the relegation battle and deservedly ended up in mid-table, they could have been a lot more comfortable and not spent most of 2018/19 looking over their shoulders had they collected an early home triumph or two.

Which is why members of the Selhurst faithful would have been delighted to see some of the early-season home games they’ve been dealt when the 2019/2020 Premier League fixtures were announced on Thursday morning.

The Eagles don’t have to welcome a member of the “Big Six” to SE25 until mid-October, albeit it will be the two-time reigning champions Manchester City.

Before the visit of Pep Guardiola’s men, Hodgson’s boys will get to check out two of the newly-promoted sides in the form of Aston Villa and Norwich City. They face off with Everton and Wolves in the other two before Pep Guardiola’s men roll into town.

Should Crystal Palace keep hold of Max Meyer this summer? Harvey Jones discusses in the video below…

This is a huge chance to improve on the horrific home start of last season as they could even make a significant improvement on their whole campaign this time around on the opening day.

After what could be a promising summer of change in terms of playing personnel at the club, Palace will be confident they can overcome the Toffees first up and get that elusive first home scalp before mid-August has even arrived.

Even if they don’t, they’ll feel like extra Premier League experience can give them the edge in the second and fourth league Selhurst matches and be determined to sleigh Europa-League stricken Wolves in late September. Hodgson must take this golden opportunity to lay to rest the home demons of last term.

Early Europa League participation has put Wolves’ players at increased risk of burning out

[ad_pod ]

Wolves enjoyed a terrific first season back in the top-flight of English football. As if their 16 points against the Premier League’s top six wasn’t enough, they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup and also qualified for the Europa League.

Nuno Santo has done a terrific job and the Wolves journey shows no signs of slowing down. Last season they were in the Championship. Next term, they’ll be in Europe for the first time since 1980.

The Portuguese manager has had what feels like an easy ride this season. He’s been able to pick a settled team most weeks and with a lack of injuries, their lack of depth hasn’t been tested too much.

On the chalkboard

To put it simply, Wolves need more bodies. If they’re to make a proper fist of the Europa League then it’ll be essential to either promote some of their best young talents or to seek quality from elsewhere.

The Midlands club will begin their Europa League campaign on 25th July, just a month after their usual pre-season training begins.

At that point in the season, it’s unlikely many players will be up to speed and Nuno could be forced to rely on a host of fringe players, particularly with some of his star men on international duty over the summer.

The likes of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho have been near ever-present for Wolves this season but they face the prospect of going to the Nations League with Portugal in the first week of June. With that in mind, it’s extremely likely they’ll need a longer period of time off.

The same can be said for Rui Patricio whilst Diogo Jota, who earned his first international call-up this year, could go to the tournament too.

With that in mind, the fear of burnout for some players has become a real possibility.

We’ve found Raul Jimenez’s No. 1 fan and… it’s a little scary. Check out the video below to see for yourself…

International commitments don’t stop there, however. Ruben Vinagre has been included in the Portugal squad for the U20 World Cup and Morgan Gibbs-White may also be in England’s travelling party for the U21 European Championships.

As a result, a number of star players could be in danger of not having a full pre-season and missing crucial qualifying matches. Wolves have too much quality to turn out how Burnley did this season but there should be concerns for Nuno considering how many matches some players have in their legs.
