Rangers News: Gerrard gets massive boost as Lille halt pursuit of Alfredo Morelos

Lille have been pursuing the signing of Alfredo Morelos quite openly and for a while, it seemed like the Ligue 1 outfit was actually getting really close to sealing the deal. However, following their signing of Gent’s Jonathan David, Rangers seem to be out of the woods for now.

Not only that but the president of the French club, Gerard Lopez, joined talkSPORT and discussed the whole situation with the Colombian striker and their £16m pursuit of his signature.

Here’s what he said for the aforementioned outlet: ‘We have (bid £16m). He’s obviously a good player. We had a primary target who was Jonathan David and who we got. He’s locked into a certain system with a number of players already around him. We know we have a lot of talent. We have lots of offensive material and we’ve hit the pause button at this stage.’

This will, of course, come as huge relief for Steven Gerrard as it seems like Lille have indeed decided to stop their chase for now, reassess and then decide what to do next. It has to be said that Lopez never confirmed they will stop the pursuit indefinitely so it is likely the French club does indeed come back for Morelos somewhere further down the line.

However, at this point, it seems like Rangers are safe and their star man up front will be staying at Ibrox for at least a while longer.

For how long though? That remains to be seen.

Verdict

It does feel like Gerrard was already preparing for life without Morelos in the squad. After all, Rangers had already secured Kemar Roofe from Anderlecht and Cedric Itten from FC St Gallen prior to this revelation and the duo seems like an attempt to plug a huge Morelos-sized hole in the team.

Now, however, it seems that the Colombian will indeed stay at the club.

Spurs fans hail Daniel Levy over Thomas Meunier snub

With Tottenham enjoying a decent return to Premier League action with one win and a draw from their opening two games, Jose Mourinho’s side are still very much in the hunt for Champions League football.

The Portuguese boss will head into the summer transfer window hoping to further strengthen his squad, and according to reports in recent weeks, Thomas Meunier was seen as a potential option on a free transfer.

Is it Mido or Pedro Mendes? This Spurs quiz will separate the loyal from the fake…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

But after it was confirmed that the Belgium international will be heading to Borussia Dortmund instead, French publication L’Equipe (via Sport Witness) have revealed why the full-back didn’t make the switch to north London.

The report claims that even despite receiving a call from Mourinho himself, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was not convinced by Meunier’s signing, and that with him being in charge of transfers, that was the end of the deal.

And after hearing about the update, Spurs fans flocked to Twitter to share their reactions.

And whilst Levy has been the subject of controversy over these past couple of months – the Lilywhites ended up back-tracking on their furlough decision for the club’s non-playing staff – he was roundly praised by fans for stepping in and snubbing Meunier.

If L’Equipe’s report is accurate and Levy did indeed intervene, then it does raise the major question of how Mourinho and him can co-exist. The latter is well-known for being outspoken, and having someone dictate the club’s transfer policy may not sit well with him.

It promises to be an intriguing summer transfer window at Spurs as it becomes clearer who is calling the shots.

The People’s Pension Stadium

Key information about the People’s Pension Stadium

People’s Pension Stadium was built in 1997 and is now the home of the League Two side Crawley Town. The ground is located on Winfield Way in Crawley and is owned by Crawley Borough Council.

Its current capacity stands at 6,134 but with only 3,134 of those being in the seated area. The natural grass pitch measures 101m by 66m and it has no undersoil heating installed nor a running track surrounding the field.

The record attendance of 5,880 at People’s Pension Stadium was reached on 5 January 2013 when Crawley Town hosted Reading in the FA Cup.

A history of People’s Pension Stadium

People’s Pension Stadium, or Broadfield Stadium as it was originally called, was built in 1997 and that also marks the year Crawley Town first moved into their new home. Before that, they had spent 48 years at their Town Mead ground which is only about two miles across town.

The land about one mile from Crawley Railway Station and close to junction 11 on the M23 Motorway was sold to the club in 1997 and it didn’t take them long to settle at the new stadium. Apart from getting a brand new and improved venue, Crawley Town also benefited from the location of the ground since it was much better connected with public transportation, meaning easier access for the fans.

At first, People’s Pension Stadium only had two all-seating stands which ran for the length of the pitch, and also two goal-end terraces with a mix of standing and seating areas. Not much has changed since the early days and just as it was back then, the ground is still very much a modest venue but still a step-up from their previous haven.

At the moment, the maximum capacity stands at 6,134 and it hasn’t yet been converted into an all-seater as 3,000 places are still reserved for standing. This makes it one of the smallest grounds in the league but over the years, it did see some redevelopment.

In 2012, for example, Crawley Town erected a new 2,000 all-seater stand on the eastern side of the pitch. It opened for the first time on Good Friday that year for the League Two home clash versus Crewe Alexandra. There are three other stands surrounding the field, each named after the side it sits on: West, North and South.

The highest attendance ever recorded at People’s Pension Stadium was set on 5 January 2013 when 5,880 watched Crawley Town host Reading in the FA Cup.

Interestingly, the stadium has had various different names. First, it was the Broadfield Stadium, then for a while it was Checkatrade.com Stadium and finally, in 2015, it got its current name due to the latest sponsorship deal with B&CE.

From 2018, Brighton & Hove Albion women’s team is also playing their football at People’s Pension Stadium.

Tickets to watch Crawley Town at People’s Pension Stadium

All tickets to watch Crawley Town play at People’s Pension Stadium can be found on the club’s official website. The price varies depending on the stand chosen but adult tickets can be purchased for a cost that ranges from £16 to £22.

Season tickets are also available for purchase for a price of £290 to £400 for adults.

Borussia Dortmund could get their spark back by signing Juventus’ Emre Can

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

The situation over at Borussia Dortmund is currently pretty bleak.

The Germans are struggling to keep up in the Bundesliga table and recorded a three-game winless streak leading up to the weekend, losing twice and drawing once in the process, though they returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win at Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

To add to their woes, their latest defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League has also put them on the edge in Europe and they will now have to fight until the last game to secure a place in the knockout stages.

Needless to say, this is a huge fall from grace for a team that was dominating Germany last season and came this close to snatching the crown away from Bayern Munich.

Still, one way to get out of the slump is to add fresh blood into the system and according to some recent reports coming from Sport Bild (via the Sun), they are looking to do exactly that.

The same report suggests they are planning to snatch Emre Can, a Manchester United target, away from Juventus as the midfielder is currently out of favour and could be an attainable player in the market.

His current value according to Transfermarkt sits at £29.7m but since he can only boast with 170 minutes across five games for the Bianconeri in the ongoing campaign, his value might be dropping along the way.

Still, this doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t be a good addition for Borussia Dortmund, who could definitely use his presence and strength in midfield.

Can managed to bag four goals and one assist in 2018/19 Serie A campaign when he was getting more regular game time and also averaged 1.1 shots and 0.7 key passes per game.

But it’s actually his defensive work combined with the attacking prowess that make him such a commanding persona in the middle of the pitch.

In 2018/19, he averaged 2.2 tackles and one interception per game while also maintaining 87.1% passing accuracy, confirming that he’s a well-rounded and safe option on the pitch.

Borussia could definitely use someone of his calibre in their ranks and the same goes for Manchester United, who are in a rather similar, but possibly even worse, situation.

The Red Devils are currently occupying the middle of the Premier League table and with one win in their last three games, could very well use some reinforcements themselves.

Can looks like someone eager to prove himself since he hasn’t been getting any real game time as of late and Old Trafford might also be a tempting challenge for him.

Spurs star Son sends classy message to stricken Gomes

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-Min has confirmed that he did not celebrate his goals against Red Star Belgrade out of respect for Everton’s Andre Gomes, per BT Sport via The Evening Standard.

What’s the word?

The South Korea international was at the centre of his Portugal counterpart’s grisly injury during the clash between the two clubs at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Son fouled Gomes on the left wing and, as the latter fell, he subsequently sustained a fracture-dislocation of his ankle, leaving the Spurs star in tears prior to his sending off.

The red card has since been rescinded – meaning he will be available for Spurs’ upcoming Premier League games – and he scored twice as Mauricio Pochettino’s men thumped Red Star Belgrade 4-0 on Wednesday evening.

However, instead of celebrating, Son merely gestured apologetically towards the camera, and he has explained that he still feels sorry about the incident, having been in contact with Gomes since the issue.

He said: “Of course it has been a really tough few days but I have realised how lucky I am with all the support I have had from the fans and my team-mates.

“I can say I’m really sorry for the accident and the situation but I had to focus for the team and I had to keep going and it was the right response to all the people who have supported me. I didn’t want to celebrate because I just want to respect the situation.

“Of course, I still feel really sorry about this situation. It’s been a few tough days. I wish Andre Gomes gets well soon and best wishes.”

A measure of the man

This is just genuinely heart-warming stuff from Son.

Not only is he blossoming into a genuinely world-class forward for Spurs – he has scored seven goals in 14 outings this season – he appears to be a respectful and humble guy to boot.

His gestures on Wednesday were remarkably classy and prove that Gomes was at the forefront of Son’s mind.

That he managed to perform as he did on the night, even after the horrible events at Goodison Park, is a further testament to just how good Son is on the pitch.

Off the pitch, he appears to be a diamond too.

Liverpool fans delighted as Jurgen Klopp is nominated for UK award

Liverpool’s victory over Barcelona in the Champions League last season was the stuff of legend.

The Reds first played the Catalan club at the Camp Nou, and went down 3-0 thanks to a Lionel Messi masterclass. Following that defeat, it looked as though it was the end of the Anfield outfit’s run, but as we all know, the Merseyside team love an impossible comeback – read Istanbul.

In the return leg at their home stadium, Jurgen Klopp and co put the La Liga champions to the sword, prevailing 4-0. Belgium international Divock Origi scored a brace, as did Georginio Wijnaldum. It was enough to put the six-time European champions into the final, where they beat Tottenham to lift the trophy.

It was a magnificent moment when the final whistle blew against the Blaugrana. So much so, Klopp has been nominated for the UK Coaching’s Great Coaching Moment of the Year award.

Unsurprisingly, the Liverpool supporters are delighted with the recognition for their boss. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Everton’s Cenk Tosun ‘brings something different’, says Paul Robinson

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former England international Paul Robinson has praised Everton’s recent hero Cenk Tosun, claiming the striker “brings something different” to the team.

What did he say?

Tosun snatched a point for Everton in the 97th minute against Tottenham Hotspur. This memorable goal was his first since he scored against Spurs back in May, and it is just his 10th at the club.

His equaliser showed grit and determination right until the final whistle, and Robinson believes the Turkey international has been unlucky not to start more often.

The former Spurs man told Football Insider: “He certainly delivered when he came on.

“Silva has chopped and changed his strike force and Tosun seems to be the one who hasn’t been given as much of a chance or as much game time as everybody else.

“But when he came on, he was a threat, he took his chance, it was a very very good typical Tosun goal.

“He works hard, he’s not the conventional No.9, but I think he took his chance, out of the four or five the manager has been rotating…he’s probably the unfortunate one, who hasn’t got the game time.

“He brings something different, he brings a threat at set-plays and as we saw with his goal, he is very good in the air.”

Time for a permanent role?

Tosun has proven down the years that his goalscoring abilities are of a high standard. Prior to his £27m move to Everton, the 28-year-old bagged 20 league goals for Besiktas in Turkey. In that 2016-17 season, his efforts helped defend Besiktas’ Super Lig title as he bagged 20 of the club’s 73 league goals.

Now, at Everton, Marco Silva must help him rediscover that form he showed back in his homeland, with other players not quite cutting it.

In truth, despite scoring five goals so far, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has not pulled his weight over the years. The Englishman has gone long periods without scoring and has only registered 22 goals in 105 appearances at Everton.

Silva must start to stick with an attacker now so they can start to build confidence and form – Tosun is that man.

Aston Villa’s Marvelous Nakamba up there with John McGinn

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Aston Villa romped to their second win of the Premier League season over the weekend as they devoured Norwich City 5-1 at Carrow Road.

Their club-record summer signing Wesley doubled his tally to move to four for the season while a trio of midfielders also managed to bag goals in Jack Grealish, Conor Hourihane, and Douglas Luiz.

The victory moved Villa out of the relegation zone and into 15th, which will offer some encouragement going into the international break.

John McGinn has been one of their influential players so far this campaign, only continuing on from the excellent form which helped them towards promotion last season.

Before Saturday’s game, the Scotsman was their top goalscorer, but he does still rate out as their best player per WhoScored’s average ratings with 7.59.

On their way to winning the playoff final, McGinn scored seven goals and laid on an assist nine times, so he could well be on track for improvements in at least the goalscoring column.

It is this sort of form that saw him mooted with a move to Manchester United over the summer, especially after his fellow countryman Sir Alex Ferguson got involved, but nothing came to fruition as he signed a five-year contract extension at Villa Park.

Watch Aston Villa Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Recent reports have even suggested that the Premier League strugglers will try to sign him in January, that’s according to Noel Whelan anyway – just one point separates Villa to United, who sit 12th.

However, it’s not all been about McGinn, there’s one player who has become an integral part of Dean Smith’s midfield.

Marvelous Nakamba has been exactly what it says on the tin. He’s been a marvellous revelation.

Defensive midfield can be quite a specialist position, but the Zimbabwe international has given Smith vital stability and strength in the lower-third portion of the pitch, quickly becoming one of their most important players.

His anchorman role has allowed the likes of McGinn and Grealish freedom further up the pitch, meaning they have been able to contribute more in the attacking phase and thus, create more chances and goals – as the Norwich victory perfectly portrayed with Villa netting five times from their 22 attempts.

Nakamba has been busy yet industrious in the heart of midfield, recording at least two tackles in every game this season, while more recently, his passing abilities have been displayed as he’s registered four key passes in his last two outings.

This level of form puts him right up there with McGinn, if not slightly ahead of him. That means that if the Scot left the club in January, whoever takes his place can naturally slide in without having to worry about what’s behind him.

In some senses, Nakamba has become the vital cog in Villa’s system and his four tackles per game are fine evidence of the pillar of solidity he offers.
