Double Wicket Cricket – An exciting affair

The feast of thrill and excitement that test cricket has provided cricket fans since inception, is still going great guns with absolutely no fears of extinction. Except for the raw fans who watch cricket only for fun, the diehard lovers of the game continue to regard test cricket as the most comprehensive, scientific, technically sound and a highly competitive form of cricket. As the times change, innovations start appearing in every walk of life. They are perhaps necessary to provide some variety to people with different tastes, temperaments, hobbies and pastimes. Like other fields these innovations have affected cricket too but with no adverse effects. The changes were healthy as well as exciting and above all, were acceptable to the masses without whose support, sports could not possibly flourish. What hit cricket like a storm was the introduction of limited over matches. Pioneered by Australia’s Channel-9 boss Kerry Packer in the mid-seventies, the one-day matches spread like wildfire all over the world. Loved and cheered by the masses, they have almost become the life and soul of today’s cricket. They draw massive crowds, attract sponsors and spin money beyond imagination. Being awfully exciting and creating a festive atmosphere, these matches have become a regular feature of almost all international series. In contrast to the slow moving tests these matches started to provide immense pleasure to the people who did not possess the time and the temperament to endure a 5-day game. They say, `variety is the spice of life’. So the next variety to capture the interest of cricket lovers is double-wicket cricket with a format radically different from tests or one-day matches. The rules may look strange but are not complicated to understand. Unlike the normal teams of 11 players, the double-wicket teams have only 2 players each. Batting and bowling being the two vital elements of the game, the teams essentially comprise of the best available pair of all-rounders.Two teams ( 2 players each) are pitched against each other for a limited number of overs. A player getting out does not retire but continues to bat but penalized a stipulated number of runs for each time he gets out. Is not it interesting to find that sometimes a team may end their innings with no run or minus a few runs on the board? The local cricket association provides the fielders normally. How exciting is the game, only seeing is believing! This strange version of the game has now achieved international dimensions and Lahore will be the venue of the 4th Double Wicket Championship being held in Pakistan. While the highly energetic cricket loving pair of Syed Abbas Kazim and Nauman Badar of Interlink Worldwide is the moving force behind this venture, Pepsi Cola International is sponsoring the championship. The day and night matches will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium from 22-25 April 2001.The championship offering a prize-money of US $ 20,000 will be played on a Round Robin league basis between two groups of 4 teams each. The group matches will be of 8 overs per innings while semi finals and finals will be of 10 and 12 overs per innings. The organizers promise a highly exciting cricket fair to lovers of the game, presenting them with a galaxy of stars performing their best in a different role. The 5 foreign teams comprise of Craig McMillan and Chris Harris from New Zealand, Arjuna Ranatunga, Upal Chandana, Mahela Jayawardene and Russel Arnold (2 teams) from Sri Lanka, Thomas Odoyo and Steve Tikolo from Kenya with Paul Strang and Craig Wishart from Zimbabwe.Pakistan has nominated 3 pairs to face the foreign teams. They shall comprise of Wasim Akram with Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir with Shoaib Malik and Abdur Razzaq with Azhar Mahmood. It may be recalled that the last international double wicket championship held at Karachi was won by the Pakistani pair of Wasim Akram and Shahid Afridi. With eight world-class pairs participating in the championship, the competition is expected to be tough as well as exciting. Pakistan’s 3 pairs of available all-rounders appear competent enough for one pair to win again but in this form of cricket, fortunes fluctuate so quickly, it could be any teams’ championship. Lots of fun in store for all!

Victoria looking to bat South Australia out of Pura clash

After a predictably disappointing batting collapse in the first innings, Victoria regained the momentum through great bowling and solid batting on the second day of its Pura Cup match against South Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground

Nabila Ahmed24-Nov-2000After a predictably disappointing batting collapse in the first innings, Victoria regained the momentum through great bowling and solid batting on the second day of its Pura Cup match against South Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.Having claimed first innings points earlier in the day, the Bushrangers are now well in contention for an outright victory that will see them escape the bottom of the domestic ladder.Jason Arnberger (56) and Matthew Mott (71*) did exactly what their team needed them to do in the final session, building up a century stand from 159 balls in just over four hours. After the early loss of Shawn Craig (5 off seventeen balls) with the score on 12, the pair steadied the side, adding 109 runs before Arnberger was dismissed.Arnberger, who struck four boundaries and lasted 143 deliveries, will be disappointed with the way he was dismissed, cutting Ben Johnson straight to point. He did have room for a six in his patient knock however, hooking Brett Swain approximately twelve rows back into bottom of the Great Southern Stand.Mott also attacked the bowling at every opportunity, striking seven fours in his first Pura Cup fifty of the season. Having worked at a few starts this summer only to be dismissed before really establishing a good score (he has 12, 22, 31, 19 and 18 in firstclass innings), Mott must have been happy with his unbeaten seventy-one. The fact that Victoria did not need to score quickly today suited Mott’s style and he will be looking to continue the fine work tomorrow. After being worn down by the home team’s resolve today, the South Australian bowlers will be desperate for an early breakthrough in the morning. Captain Darren Lehmann tried eight bowlers in the final session, but only one wicket fell. The Redbacks will be hoping Paul Wilson (0/28), who claimed four Victorian batsmen in the first innings, will be fit to start tomorrow, after having to come off the field in the second last over of the day because of a leg injury. With first innings’ century maker Brad Hodge (3*) at the crease, and their lead already up to 273 runs with eight wickets in hand, Victoria will be keen to score quickly in the first couple of sessions tomorrow before allowing themselves just over a day to bowl out the Redbacks.Dismissing the Victorians will only be the start of the hard work for the visitors, who were routed for just 96 in their first innings earlier today. The total was South Australia’s lowest against Victoria since scoring 84 in the 1996-97 season, and a mere twenty-eight runs greater than their all-time Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup low, achieved in the summer of 1931-32.Twenty-two year old Mathew Inness was the star of the Bushrangers’ attack, returning career-best figures of 6/26 for the second time in five days. Inness, who surprised the West Indies with his burst on Sunday, snared the key wickets of Greg Blewett (1) and Lehmann (0) with his first two balls. He was aided in his efforts by captain Paul Reiffel (1/28) and Colin Miller (1/13), while Damien Fleming (0/27) went wicketless.

Rangers have enquired about Jacob Murphy

Rangers have reportedly enquired about signing Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy ahead of the summer, although Steven Gerrard’s hopes of bringing him to Ibrox are slim as he is also reportedly set to sign a new contract with the Magpies.

According to Chronicle Live, the 26-year-old has attracted interest ahead of the summer as a result of his impressive recent performances for Steve Bruce’s side, but he is set to stay at St James’ Park as Newcastle have the option to trigger a one-year extension, which they will take up.

The former Norwich City winger, who is currently valued at £3.15m by Transfermarkt, has put in a string of excellent performances as a right-back in recent weeks, which have helped steer the Toon well clear of relegation from the Premier League.

Having struggled for regular starts in Bruce’s side earlier in the season, it seems as if Murphy was able to win over his manager with a starring performance from the bench in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa back in March, as he has since gone on to appear in each of Newcastle’s last seven games, starting six of them.

He has produced impressive displays against Tottenham, Burnley and Liverpool recently, emphasising that he has the quality to play in the Premier League, and therefore he could have been an excellent addition to Gerrard’s side at Ibrox.

Although his best performances this season have come as a right-back, he could have been utilised in a number of positions by Gerrard, which certainly would have been appreciated by the Gers boss as he begins planning for the 2021/22 campaign, which will see Rangers compete in the Champions League.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-rangers-news-transfer-rumours-and-more-copy-copy” title=“Latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more from Ibrox!”]

The 26-year-old earned high praise from Noel Whelan earlier in the season, with the former Leeds man telling Football Insider: “Murphy is a player with so much ability. He was brought to that club to run, be direct, use that pace and skill that he has with the ball at his feet and now he seems to be doing it.

“Murphy seems to be enjoying football again at Newcastle. The surroundings, the manager and the squad all seem to have made a nice connection. Newcastle seems a happier camp right now and Murphy is showing what a fantastic player he is.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

Therefore, it is a huge blow to Gerrard’s chances of signing Murphy this summer that he is close to agreeing a one-year extension with the Toon, for unless the Gers are willing to stump up a significant fee, it seems unlikely that he will complete a switch to Ibrox.

Aston Villa: Fans unimpressed with Anwar El Ghazi

A number of Aston Villa fans were unimpressed with winger Anwar El Ghazi in the 2-1 win over Tottenham on Wednesday evening.

Dean Smith recorded his 50th win as Villa boss, with a Sergio Reguilon own goal and an Ollie Watkins winner silencing 10,000 Tottenham fans.

However, it was El Ghazi’s display that had plenty of Villa supporters talking on social media, and not for the right reasons.

The 26-year-old made his 16th Premier League start of the season and 30th appearance in all competitions, playing the entirety of the game.

He was actually Villa’s worst-rated performer, as per SofaScore, with a match rating of 6.5/10. The Dutch international was coming up against Japhet Tanganga and lost 13 duels in total, while also losing possession 16 times.

El Ghazi also missed a great chance to put Villa 3-1 up after being set up by club captain Jack Grealish.

Wolves: Neves’ value has increased by 200%

Ingenious, magical, awe-inspiring. It feels like every superlative in the book has been used for Wolves star Ruben Neves in the last four years.

Signed for a Championship record £15m, the midfielder swapped Champions League football and Porto’s captaincy for the second tier of English football in 2017.

It was a mind-boggling transfer but one which set the tone for Wolves. With the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo and the arrival of Fosun Group, a relationship with super-agent Jorge Mendes was established.

Since Neves’ record move, Wolves have completed several deals of a similar ilk for Mendes’ clients. The likes of Nelson Semedo and Pedro Neto are both on Gestifute’s book, for instance, but the aforementioned midfield wizard is undoubtedly their biggest success story.

Neves has quickly become one of the most impressive and sought-after players in his position in the Premier League.

Links to Manchester City have been discussed but, for the time being, he is still the shining light of Nuno’s midfield.

It’s hard to believe the Portugal international is still only 24 years of age. He plays like somebody who has been at the top for years, conjuring up truly golden moments in front of the Molineux faithful.

When it comes to scoring goals from an improbable range, there are few better in Europe. After scoring his first Premier League goal in August 2018, it marked his 11th senior strike, just one of which had been from inside the penalty box.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-wolves-transfer-news-and-views-ocampos-ronaldo-trincao-fabio-silva” title=”Latest Wolves transfer news and views!”]

Neves is Nuno’s quarterback, the standout and go-to man when Wolves are in a crisis. If he were in high school, he’d be the most popular in the class.

Very rarely does the Portuguese prop up inside the penalty area, something that’s proven to be one of the most eye-catching traits in the top flight. For instance, in August 2019, he racked up a 13th goal for Wolves. That happened to be a tenth from outside the box in Old Gold.

At that moment in time, only Harry Wilson (12) and Christian Eriksen (11) had scored more often from outside the box since Neves’ debut in English football.

It’s hardly surprising, therefore, that he has earned phenomenal reviews down the years. His former teammate Sylvain Deslandes once said: “He is a very, very talented player. We immediately saw it.”

Deslandes continued: “From his very first minutes in the Championship, he blew everybody’s mind with the science behind his ball placement and his aesthetically pleasing way of playing. But especially, we were astounded by his passing skills and his great shot capacity from long range.”

Such is Neves’ tendency to do things from outside the box that, at one point in 2018, he had scored more goals (6) than taken touches inside the area (4).

This season has seen him move slightly further forward. He is making more passes per game in the final third than he has done over the last four seasons. The way he popped up with a rare goal inside the penalty area against Everton in January typifies that.

Neves is now adding another layer to his game, something which is exemplified by his five Premier League goals in 2020/21. Coincidentally, Neves hasn’t scored that many goals in a single season since Wolves’ promotion-winning campaign.

All of this has led to the midfielder’s transfer value increasing exponentially. According to Transfermarkt, he is now worth an eye-catching £45m; an increase of 200% in four years from when he first penned terms in the Midlands.

“He can defend he can attack, he’s so talented,” Jamie Redknapp said in July 2020. “He can do it at Wolves but I think he’s going right to the top of the game, it’s effortless for him,” the Sky Sports pundit added.

Those words analyse Neves perfectly. He is a footballer who makes football look like art, a player who uses the ball like a paintbrush to convey his feelings.

Simply put, Neves is magic.

Aston Villa: Fans react to FFP news

Several Aston Villa supporters have been reacting to an update regarding Financial Fair Play on social media.

According to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, cited by the Birmingham Mail, UEFA are on the verge of scrapping Financial Fair Play and could replace it with a new system to monitor club spending.

Palmeri claims that a possible new system could give clubs more freedom over their finances, which could be seen first-hand in the transfer market.

Aston Villa’s owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are among the richest in the Premier League, so the change may benefit Villa, with Dean Smith looking to improve the club’s squad depth with quality in the summer window.

Villa fans react

@AVFC_News shared the Birmingham Mail’s report on social media on Wednesday afternoon, with their post receiving plenty of interaction.

This is what these supporters had to say, with some wondering what the changes could mean ahead of the summer window.

Claim dropped on potential NUFC takeover

A football finance guru has dropped a claim on relegation and what it may mean for the potential takeover of Newcastle United.

A recent report from The Times has revealed that players at the St. James’ Park faithful have no relegation clauses in their current deals, meaning that their wage bill would not change even if they were to go down to the EFL Championship from the Premier League.

Speaking to Football Insider, Kieran Maguire has claimed that the contract situation could make it much more difficult for Mike Ashley to sell the North East club:

“My main concern would be that, should the worst happen and Newcastle were relegated, it makes them less attractive to a prospective new owner because they’ll say: ‘Well, I’m buying a club which has got these white elephants.’

“That would impact on A) whether prospective buyers want to buy Newcastle and B) the price they will offer Mike Ashley.

“I wouldn’t want to pay more money because if I’ve got a player on £40,000-per-week for the next three years, that’s over £6m on someone who I’m not really going to get much of a return on.

“If the players aren’t happy, you don’t want unhappy players at the club. What are you going to do with them?”

Newcastle takeover harder with relegation

If the Tyneside club were to find themselves relegated from the top flight at the end of the 2020/21 term, then it would certainly be a lot harder to see the potential takeover by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group going through.

Not only would a large wage bill for the Championship be a problem in terms of finances, but a club in the second division will certainly not be as an attractive proposition to the prospective new owners, and Ashley would not be able to demand as much money for a sale.
