West Ham enter race for Bayo

According to le10sport, West Ham United have now entered the race to sign Clermont Foot 63 striker Mohamed Bayo alongside the likes of Lille and Bordeaux – but GSB may have an advantage.

The Lowdown: West Ham in striker hunt…

It is no secret that manager David Moyes wishes to add a striker before the transfer window deadline in 10 days time.

The Scotsman even confirmed as much in a recent press conference, but also warned it may not even happen due to the limited number of targets available at this moment in time (TEAMtalk).

Now, le10sport have brought some news regarding West Ham and their continued chase for a forward.

The Latest: West Ham join Bayo race…

As per le10sport, the Hammers have now joined the race to sign Bayo this summer as they compete with Lille and Bordeaux for his signature.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-3/” title=”West Ham latest news…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, West Ham have ‘swung into action’ and even contacted ‘the management of Clermont’ earlier this week to find out the conditions for a transfer.

As well as this, it is hinted that GSB may hold an advantage over other interested parties – with the report claiming West Ham have a ‘much more impressive financial power than the French clubs’.

The Verdict: Good option?

Scoring a career total of 42 goals, the 23-year-old enjoyed a rather impressive Ligue 2 campaign for Clermont last season and was a big reason for their promotion to the French top flight.

He bagged 22 strikes and seven assists over 2020/2021, spearheading their charge to the big time and potentially attracting West Ham’s interest as a result.

Still at a fairly young age, he could also arrive at the London Stadium with plenty of sell-on value and Moyes is hardly spoiled for choice when it comes to alternative striker targets.

Is it time for West Ham to take a gamble and snap up the Guinean forward?

Ninguém da diretoria sequer me procurou.

Powerful Morkel sinks Lancashire

One of Durham’s South African all-rounders, Albie Morkel, came up gold for them in their match against Lancashire, hammering a magnificent unbeaten 45 off 25 balls, with two fours and five sixes

One of Durham’s South African all-rounders, Albie Morkel, came up gold for them in their match against Lancashire, hammering a magnificent unbeaten 45 off 25 balls, with two fours and five sixes. His team had never been in a hopeless position, because when this man is at the crease such a situation scarcely exists, but it took a thrilling burst that included five sixes off ten balls to see the side home by six wickets with six balls in hand.Lancashire, batting on winning the toss, faced up first to the South African pair of Morkel and Shaun Pollock, who struck quickly dismissing Lou Vincent. Most credit, though, must go to that superb all-round county cricketer, Gareth Breese, who took a brilliant low diving catch far to his right at slip. Then came an intriguing, all too brief battle between two veterans still scarcely past their prime: Stuart Law took on Pollock. Twice he lashed straight shortish balls through the covers for four and was clearly determined to dominate. He was beaten a couple of times, but on the whole came off the better of the two, with Pollock’s three-over spell costing him 27 runs.Law ran to his 50 off 34 balls in fine style before Breese had him beaten down the pitch and stumped for 53. He had taken most of the bowling, as was clear when later opener Mal Loye also reached 50 – off 33 ballsl Loye emulated Kevin Pietersen’s famous (or infamous) stroke by switching to left-hand mode and pulling a six over point, off Breese. He attempted the same stroke again several times, but without the same success; in fact, he twice came close to being dismissed. Eventually he was bowled for 53, taking a big swing. The bowler in question was Scott Borthwick, a leg-spinner making his debut for Durham. He showed real promise, taking a return catch to dismiss Steven Croft for 29and, entrusted with the last over of the innings, had Kyle Hogg caught by the ubiquitous Breese on the square-leg boundary. His figures of 4-0-23-3 have a dreamlike quality for a debutant in Twenty20. The other bowlers had little to rejoice about, although Liam Plunkett’s first two overs were very impressive without reward.Durham faced a daunting task, needing 181 to win. Michael Di Venuto (21) and Phil Mustard, added a brisk 42 for the first wicket, with Mustard hitting Dominic Cork for a straight six in the third over. But the chase really heated up when, in the poorest light of the match, Dale Benkenstein (31) joined Mustard and the two added 50 in just over five overs. However, Benkenstein fell to a catch on the long-on boundary, and despite the efforts of Mustard, including two leg-side sixes off Gary Keedy’s first two balls, the required scoring rate reached double figures. When Mustard fell for 61 off 40 balls there was always hope as long as that spectacular hitter, Morkel, was still there, with Pollock also in the mix.Morkel began cautiously, but then casually swung Hogg for six over midwicket, followed by another one straight down the ground. It was down to 38 needed off three overs, still possible for Morkel. Fellow South African Faf du Plessis was the unlucky bowler – 19 off the over and the target halved. Pollock helped out by hitting Cork for six, taking a single, and allowing Morkel to put another into the stands. A misfield by Sajid Mahmood gave away a four, then a single brought the scores level at the end of the nineteenth over. Mahmood, to his disgust, then send a short ball down the leg side for a wide, and the game was over.

Hoppe/Armstrong - who should Saints sign?

Southampton have been linked with both Adam Armstrong and Matthew Hoppe in recent weeks, but who would be the better addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side?

Adam Armstrong

Southampton have been regularly linked with a move for the Blackburn Rovers striker and are expected to return with another bid for the 24-year-old in the near future after seeing their first offer for him rejected by the Championship side.

The former Newcastle United man hit 28 goals in the Championship last season, so despite him entering the final year of his contract at Ewood Park, Blackburn are still demanding a hefty fee for the forward this summer.

Hasenhuttl relied upon Danny Ings and Che Adams as the main goalscorers in his side last season, and if the influential Ings were to depart this summer after rejecting a new contract at St Mary’s, Armstrong could prove to be the clinical striker Southampton need despite his comparative lack of top-flight experience.

Matthew Hoppe

According to 90min, Southampton are one of several Premier League clubs taking an interest in the Schalke 04 striker this summer after he finished as the top scorer for the team last season in what was his first campaign as a professional.

The 20-year-old hit six goals for Die Konigsblauen as they were ultimately relegated from the Bundesliga, so it is no surprise to see clubs showing an interest in him, as Schalke’s worrying financial issues mean that he would likely be available at a cut-price fee.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

The £4.05m-rated forward was heavily praised by Jurgen Klinsmann after he hit an impressive hattrick in a 4-0 win against Hoffenheim last season, with the former Germany coach saying: “Schalke has one of the best academy systems in Germany. It’s not a coincidence that a lot of top talents in Germany come off the Schalke production line.

“And seeing him there today, scoring three goals in probably one of the most difficult moments in Schalke’s history, is just incredible.”

Who would be better for Southampton?

Whilst Armstrong boasts a better goalscoring record and more experience, he has never proven himself in the Premier League, whereas Hoppe showed his class in the German top flight last season despite playing for a relegated team.

Hoppe also has age on his side and will be a lot cheaper than Armstrong, with Blackburn reportedly wanting as much as £25m for their man this summer.

Therefore, if the Englishman proves to be too expensive, then Saints CEO Martin Semmens should instead look to bring the 20-year-old Hoppe to St Mary’s this summer.

Sri Lankan players agree to sign ICC contract

Sri Lanka will field a full strength side during the ICC Champions Trophyafter a last minute deal was struck between the Board of Control for Cricketin Sri Lanka (BCCSL) and the players, ending a potentially embarrassingdispute for the host nation.A BCCSL statement, issued from Colombo, said: “Discussions between the BCCSLand the Sri Lanka Cricketers’ Association (SLCA) regarding the participationof Sri Lankan cricketers in the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 were concludedsuccessfully today.”The players, represented by former Sri Lanka fast bowler Graeme Labrooy onbehalf of the SLCA, had demanded 30% of all revenue accrued by the BCCSLduring the tournament if they were to sign a controversial ICC contract. The ICC contract prevents the players from endorsing products that mightconflict with official ICC Champions Trophy sponsors for a period spanningnearly three months. The BCCSL, however, refused the players’ demands on Wednesday, claiming thatthe cricket board was facing a cash shortage in light of there being so fewincoming tours to Sri Lanka during the current financial year.Agreement was reached after the BCCSL promised to pay the players an”undisclosed lump sum” as compensation for the use of their player rights.Although the players failed to get the 30% that had been demanded, Labrooy was satisfied with the final outcome: "Both parties compromised and we reached a win-win situation with the players being fairly compensated, so we are happy."An more open dialogue with the cricketers is now expected in the future: "The players were hurt that their rights had been sold without proper consultation, now the board has agreed to be more open and we will discuss a longer term plan, including the ICC World Cup next year, after the tournament.According to Labrooy, the national players are not the main beneficiaries of the deal: "90 percent of money provided by the BCCSL in this agreement will be redistributed to Sri Lanka’s first class cricketers."The 12-team tournament starts on Sept 12 when Sri Lanka take on Pakistan.

Ford on Simons

If former South African coach Graham Ford wishes his successor Eric Simons anything, it is mostly that his bowlers stay fit

Peter Robinson14-Jun-2002If former South African coach Graham Ford wishes his successor Eric Simons anything, it is mostly that his bowlers stay fit. "It helps if you’ve got a settled attack," reflected Ford this week. "It helps quite a lot."Ford, who is weighing up his future options as he negotiates a settlement with the United Cricket Board, is as well-placed as any to understand the pressures and demands that will now placed on the shoulders on the 40-year-old Simons as South Africa head into a summer that includes the 2003 World Cup."I’ve spoken to Eric about coaching quite a few times," said Ford this week. "We have similar views on a number of things. I think he’s a quality coach and I wish him everything of the best. But it will be important to him to stick to his principles and the methods that got him the job in the first place."He’s going to experience a lot of pressure from the outside, from ex-players, the media, the public and administrators as he steps up into the spotlight and the simple truth is that you can’t please all these different people."In a sense it’s a bit like the things you tell young players when they make the step up: you’ve got where you are now by doing things a certain way so don’t try and make yourself a different player. Stick to what you know and what works for you," said Ford.In one respect, Simons may a significant advantage over Ford. "The way I understand it from what I’ve read, Eric’s role has been much more clearly defined. He’ll play a significant role in planning strategy and he’ll be working with knowledgeable people. If he can get the right strategy and the selectors give him the players to implement this strategy, South Africa will have an excellent chance of winning the World Cup."Also in Simons’ favour, suggests Ford, will be the relationships he already has with the Western Province members of the national team."I know I was criticised at times for being `too friendly’ with the Natal players. I think it was unjustified. If you come out of a provincial set-up you have those relationships and you use them to build relationships with the other guys in the team. I can assure you, and it will be the same for Eric, that when you’re in the job, the last thing you think about is petty provincialism. You just want the team to win."Ford believes that notwithstanding the results against Australia during the past summer, South Africa have to be counted among the favourites to win the World Cup.""Look at our record at home. You have to go back to when Australia were last here, back in 1997, for a defeat at home. And over the past few years, we haven’t just been beating other countries, we’ve been hammering them."Apart from ourselves and Australia, I’ve always admired the way Sri Lanka play one-day cricket, but a lot will depend on how well the adjust to our conditions. Pakistan have the firepower to use the new bouncer rule in our conditions, but they’re always an enigma. They often seem divided among themselves and you don’t know how their problems at home, with tours being cancelled, will affect them. Maybe they’ll be a little short of cricket, maybe the problems will pull them together."New Zealand are very much a team and their success is always a team effort. They have a game plan and they stick to it, but I’m not sure they have the individual players capable of taking games away from teams like South Africa. India have fantastic batsmen and if they progress in the World Cup they’ll be fantastic to watch because it will mean their batters are firing, but I don’t know if they have the attack to win the World Cup in South African conditions."In a different way I don’t know that England could go all the way. They’re an improving team, but I don’t know about winning the World Cup."South Africa’s prospects, though, could depend on how well the attack functions."I think that’s where we fell short last season. If you look at how settled the Australian attack was compared to how many guys we used, there was quite a big difference. We had injury problems, of course. Someone like Mfuneko Ngam was not available while when we got to Australia guys like Allan Donald and Nantie Hayward had been troubled by injury and they, along with someone like Steve Elworthy, weren’t quite sure what roles they were expected to fill."We batted well enough a lot of times, but our bowling often couldn’t contain the Australians. If we can get the bowling settled and firing, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t win the World Cup."

Clancy: Tottenham target Fonseca made strange decisions at Roma

Paulo Fonseca made some “strange decisions” during his time as AS Roma boss, says Forza Italian Football editor-in-chief Conor Clancy.

Fonseca is in line to become Tottenham’s next manager following the collapse in talks with Antonio Conte, with BBC Sport reporting that the two parties are currently holding discussions.

The 48-year-old is a free agent after leaving Roma at the conclusion of the 2020/21 season and has since been replaced by Jose Mourinho, the man he could now succeed at Spurs.

Fonseca guided the Giallorossi to seventh in Serie A, securing a place in the Europa Conference League, but not without making some strange decisions along the way, according to Clancy.

“He got a lot out of players, but he did make some strange decisions like playing Bryan Cristante, who’s like an attacking midfielder, at centre-back in a back three,” the Forza Italian Football editor-in-chief said. “It was a bit bizarre and people poke fun at him for that.”

It will be interesting to see if he does anything as crazy as that at Tottenham. Whatever the case, Spurs fans will surely just be happy to have a new manager.

The club sacked Mourinho back in April and since then, it feels like there has been a lot of sagas involving the likes of Brendan Rodgers, Erik ten Hag and Conte.
