Tendulkar tips seamers to shine

Sachin Tendulkar has said he is confident about India defending its World Twenty20 title and expects the pace attack to come good in English conditions. “It is on par with the best,” he told . “Zaheer [Khan], Ishant [Sharma] and RP Singh form a lethal combination, particularly in English conditions. Our seam attack has a lot of variety and would come handy in such conditions. On our day, we can demolish any batting side.”Tendulkar, who will not take part in the World Twenty20, had stressed the need for the Indian players to get adequate rest ahead of the competition after an intense IPL. He had singled out India’s opening combination, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, which had struggled in the IPL, to fight fatigue in the lead-up to the tournament in England. When asked about Sehwag’s poor run, Tendulkar said: “Every player has ups and downs in his career and Viru [Sehwag] is no exception. But an on-song Viru is a delight to watch. If he gets one cover drive right, he’ll mesmerise everybody and will again be back to his best. The bowlers will be at his mercy then. He is a superb striker of the ball … on his day, he can do anything.”Tendulkar tipped India as the favourites for competition, for he felt that rather than just some individuals making the difference, the team is the best balanced outfit around. “We come as a package,” he said. “I am certain this package is the best in business at the moment. This package has everything which is necessary to make us world champions once again.”India is the most balanced side in the world and there is no doubt we can defend the title. We have very good cricketers in our side and we have proved that this combination is the deadliest.”

Predicted Everton XI ahead of West Ham

Everton will be hoping that they can continue their impressive start to the new Premier League season when they host high-flying West Ham United this afternoon.

The Toffees are currently sitting fifth in the top-flight table after Rafa Benitez’s charges hit the ground running in the opening weeks of 2021/22.

However, injuries to key players continue to pose problems for the Spaniard. Attacking duo Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are once again sidelined through fitness concerns, giving the manager some big calls to make.

It’s not all bad news on the injury front for the Merseyside outfit, though. Lucas Digne has been declared fit alongside Seamus Coleman and Alex Iwobi, giving Benitez some much-needed strength in depth.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects the 61-year-old to line up at Goodison Park, with just the one change from the side which held Manchester United to a draw last time out…

In goal, the virtually ever-present Jordan Pickford will once again start between the sticks for the Blues, and he’ll be hoping to keep his third clean sheet of the season.

Ahead of the England international should be a familiar back four, boosted by the return of club captain Coleman. The £22.5m-rated Ben Godfrey should make way for the right-back following some poor recent performances, allowing Digne, Yerry Mina and Michael Keane to back up the defensive unit.

The engine room in unlikely to witness any changes after their impressive display at Old Trafford prior to the international break, so 20-year-old Anthony Gordon keeps his place on the left wing.

That means Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Andros Townsend will form the rest of the midfield behind an attacking duo of Demarai Gray and Salomon Rondon. With Gray and Townsend both netting three league goals so far this term and Calvert-Lewin absent today, the two summer arrivals could be crucial in the final third for Everton.

Celtic trio ruled out of Dundee Utd clash

Celtic have been dealt a triple injury blow before their clash at home to Dundee United in the Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Injury crisis

Ange Postecoglou is facing a bit of an injury crisis at the moment, with Giorgos Giakoumakis, Callum McGregor, Greg Taylor, Christopher Jullien, Mikey Johnston and James Forrest all on the sidelines at the moment (The Scottish Sun).

The Parkhead side are currently lingering in sixth spot in the table, and the plethora of injuries certainly have not helped in that regard.

The Latest: Three confirmed out

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match against Dundee United, Postecoglou has now confirmed (via The Scottish Sun) that Kyogo Furuhashi, as well as both McGregor and Johnston, will miss out through injury, on top of those already on the sidelines

The Hoops boss revealed:

“With Cal next Thursday is being optimistic.

“With Kyogo, I doubt we will see him this side of the international window but he is pushing hard.

“Unfortunately, Mikey Johnston picked up a niggle on Wednesday so he will be out and I’m not sure when he will be back.

“To cut a long story short, we won’t get anybody back for Sunday.”

The Verdict: Blow

It certainly is a blow to lose Furuhashi along with McGregor and Johnston among the long list of absentees.

The Japan international has scored no fewer than seven goals and supplied one assist in nine appearances over all competitions so far this season (injury-ravaged Johnston offers another attacking option.

Nonetheless, Postecoglou is under pressure to pick up results fast, and he will need to start doing so today without a number of his key players.

Jarrod Bowen set to stay at West Ham

West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen is set to stay put with the Hammers this season, despite rumours linking him with a potential exit.

The Lowdown: Bowen linked with exit

The 24-year-old has done well in a West Ham shirt to date, scoring nine goals and registering 10 assists in 56 appearances overall.

He has also started all three of the Irons’ league games so far this season, but he has been linked with a summer move to Liverpool.

The Latest: Winger staying put

Thankfully, those claims appear to be wide of the mark, with The Athletic’s Simon Hughes claiming that Bowen will remain a West Ham player for the foreseeable future despite being monitored by Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

David Moyes clearly sees him as a key player moving forward and will be keen to keep hold of him following such a strong start to the campaign for the Hammers.

The Verdict: Big boost for Hammers

This is a big boost for West Ham, with Bowen integral to the team’s success in recent times, providing attacking quality and a strong work ethic.

The former Hull City man may have been outshone by others this season, namely Michail Antonio, but he is undoubtedly a key cog in the Irons machine, and the London Stadium faithful can look forward to enjoying his talents for another few months at least.

Spurs dealt blow ahead of Pacos clash

Nuno Santo has been dealt a massive blow ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s clash with Pacos de Ferreira in the UEFA Europa Conference League this evening…

What’s the latest?

Harry Kane, who has been linked with an exit throughout the summer, was left out of Spurs’ squad to face his potential suitors, Manchester City, on Sunday afternoon but he returned training with his teammates earlier this week.

The 28-year-old striker was named in Nuno’s 25-man squad for tonight’s encounter but it’s understood that he has not travelled to Portugal for the first of this two-legged tie.

According to the PA news agency (via the Independent), the England international has remained in London and will continue to work on his fitness ahead of potential involvement in Sunday’s match against Nuno’s former club, Wolves.

Meanwhile, speaking ahead of kick-off, the 47-year-old head coach told reporters (via the Guardian):

“What we must be sure of is that when we decide to put a player on the pitch, we have to consider all of the aspects. The fitness, the mental aspects. We are here to support all of the players equally.

“Harry, of course, has all of our support. His fitness is getting better each day. He worked today, he is going to work tomorrow and he is going to join the group on Friday. On Saturday we will make the decision on who is going to be involved in the next [league] game.”

Massive blow

To not have Kane involved later tonight should come as a huge setback to the Portuguese and the rest of the Spurs squad. Whilst Pacos are no great shakes, in comparison to a Premier League side, they will still pose a threat in a competition that the north Londoners could realistically win.

Spurs have been without silverware since 2008, so they should probably take this competition seriously, even if it’s a chance to rotate the starting XI. Nuno has plenty of strength in depth in all departments right now.

Their chances of success, however, are dented in the absence of their leading talisman, who contributed to 54.4% of all of Spurs’ goals scored in the Premier League last term, whilst he’s hit at least 19 goals in each of his last seven campaigns.

He’s a crucial, crucial part of this Lilywhites squad.

Furthermore, it would’ve been a fantastic chance for Kane to get some minutes on the pitch as he steps up his training preparations. Whether he stays or goes before August 31st remains to be seen, but Spurs must continue on as if he’s sticking around and a game like this could’ve got him up to speed a lot quicker than a few fitness sessions at Hotspur Way.

In his absence on Sunday, they defeated the reigning champions but only by a solitary goal. In 90 minutes, they only registered three shots on target – fewer attempts than City – as per SofaScore.

Kane has averaged 3.6 shots per game throughout the course of his career, so he’d certainly help Nuno in that aspect too. Heung-min Son isn’t likely to start tonight, meaning Dane Scarlett, 17, is expected to start his first-ever game for the senior side. A huge gamble.

To make matters worse, Nuno is also without the services of young centre-back Joe Rodon, who too could’ve done with some minutes on the pitch.

Nuno should be worried heading into this encounter, failure to see off Pacos de Ferreira would be a disaster so early on in his Spurs managerial career.

Eighteen clubs threaten Sri Lanka boycott

Sri Lanka’s domestic season is facing chaos after 18 clubs threatened to pull out of the Premier League unless Sri Lanka Cricket’s interim committee enforces the rules and relegates Badureliya SC to the league’s Tier B.The dispute came about after a decision was made that Badureliya, who finished bottom in last season’s competition, would not be demoted to the second division. The clubs have delayed the agreement of fixtures for the domestic season, and the league, which is due to start on October 22, is now facing postponement. The clubs have expressed fears that any move by the interim committee to ignore their protest could lead to first-class cricket coming to a complete standstill making national selection also an issue. Two weeks ago Ajith Jayasekera, the tournament committee chairman, and MahindaHalangoda, another member, resigned from their posts over the interim committee’s failure to relegate Badureliya SC.As a result, the five-member tournament committee is unable to function as it has been reduced to just three members.

Preview: West Brom XI vs Bournemouth

West Bromwich Albion head into their opening fixture of the new Championship season with a few unknowns still hanging over Valerien Ismael’s squad.

Firstly, the future of Matheus Pereira remains up in the air, although it has been recently reported that the winger could be set to secure a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in the not too distant future.

However, the Brazilian has not played a part in Albion’s pre-season fixtures, nor has he been training with the squad, so the uncertainty surrounding the 25-year-old does not seem to affect the team directly, but more so in terms of their incoming transfer business.

Indeed, with it being reported that Albion are demanding a figure in the region of £25m in order to sanction the 25-year-old’s sale, this sum would help Ismael to plug a number of gaps in his West Brom squad, with the 45-year-old lacking depth at left-back, in central midfield and up front.

With that in mind, we take a look at how the Baggies could line up against Bournemouth on Friday evening, along with the latest team and injury news…

With Ismael confirming that he will be without the trio of Adam Reach, Quevin Castro and Taylor Gardner-Hickman for the trip to the Vitality Stadium, the team is not overly changed from the one which defeated Birmingham City 4-0 in their final pre-season friendly last weekend.

However, with Phillips impressing in the number nine role in pre-season, the 30-year-old gets the nod to start the game up top following his self-isolation, with Karlan Grant moving onto the left-hand side of attack – a position which allows the forward to cut in on his favoured right foot – while Callum Robinson drops to the bench.

New signing Matt Clarke does not make the starting XI, while Sam Johnstone could be set to begin the clash between the sticks, after Ismael praised the £30k-per-week goalkeeper’s attitude in training amid reports suggesting that the 28-year-old could be moving onto pastures new this summer.

Meanwhile, in terms of shape, the new 3-4-3/3-4-2-1 system will undoubtedly take time for the Albion players to become familiarised, but Ismael will nevertheless be hoping for a positive result in his first competitive game in charge of the club.
