South Africa in control, but hit by ball-tampering penalty

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSouth Africa’s bowlers made slow but steady progress towards squaring the Test series•Associated Press

South Africa’s march towards a result that will draw the series and prolong their seven-year unbeaten record away from home continued unabated, but the gloss on their seemingly impeccable performance was lost when the on-field umpires penalised them for tampering with the ball. Graeme Smith’s team ended the third day needing six wickets to complete an emphatic victory – probably by an innings considering Pakistan were still trailing by 286 with two days remaining – but the likelihood of a meeting with the Match Referee loomed large as the sun set in Dubai. The incident occurred two overs after tea, before the start of the 31st over, following television visuals of one player rubbing the ball allegedly on the zipper of his trouser pocket. The umpires Ian Gould and Rod Tucker called Graeme Smith over for a chat and subsequently changed the ball and awarded a five-run penalty against South Africa, sanctions that are consistent with the penalty for unlawfully changing the condition of the ball. A second television visual showed another player allegedly picking at the side of the ball with his finger. On either side of that unsavoury episode, however, South Africa made strides towards victory, albeit not at the pace at which they had shut Pakistan out of the Test over the first two days. After South Africa were dismissed for 517 with a lead of 418, 16 minutes before lunch, Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander punched Pakistan in the gut by dismissing their openers in their only overs before the break.Steyn swung the ball back into Shan Masood’s front pad and the left-hand batsman continued Pakistan’s lousy use of reviews by wasting one on an lbw that was plumb. Philander then handed Khurram Manzoor his first pair in Test cricket; the right-hand batsman hung his bat outside off stump and watched Jacques Kallis dive to his right at second slip to take the catch at head height. Pakistan were 2 for 2.After lunch, Younis Khan and Azhar Ali focused on survival. Steyn swung and seamed the new ball away from the right-handers; Philander bowled with unrelenting accuracy; Morne Morkel hit speeds off 149.6 kph – the fastest ball of the Test – in his first over. With four slips and other catches in place, there were gaps to exploit on the huge outfield but only 18 runs were scored in the first 13 overs. One of Tahir’s legbreaks spun so viciously from the rough around off stump that it went straight to first slip.Azhar and Younis, however, survived all that until Smith brought on the part-time offspinner JP Duminy ten minutes before tea. His first ball spun sharply into Azhar and kept low to hit the back pad just in line with off stump. In an instant, a vast amount of hard graft had come undone and Pakistan were 48 for 3. Duminy could have struck in his second over, too, but Kallis failed to catch an outside edge from Younis off the penultimate ball before the break.Younis’ composure, which had served him well through the second session, disappeared soon after the tampering incident, when he charged Tahir and attempted a mow across the line. He missed and the ball bounced off his pad on to his stumps. At 70 for 4, Pakistan were in danger of sliding further towards defeat but Misbah-ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq put on an unbeaten 62-run stand. Shafiq was fortunate to survive a stumping chance on 18 off Duminy, and Pakistan will need a miraculous performance from him and the rest to prevent an innings defeat. The third day had begun with promise of more records being broken, with Smith resuming on 227 and de Villiers on 157. However, with the job already done unlike when they had come together early on the second day, their stroke-play wasn’t as tight.De Villiers began to drive at Mohammad Irfan from the start, but a ball after he placed one to the straight boundary, he drove again and edged. This time Adnan Akmal caught it, 164 runs and 273 deliveries after he should have caught de Villiers first ball. Irfan had now worked up a brisk pace and soon drew an edge from Smith. Akmal dropped it again, and Irfan told the wicketkeeper just what he thought of that effort. The mistake did not cost Pakistan, though, because Ajmal had Smith caught at slip a ball later, leaving South Africa 478 for 6.What followed made Pakistan wonder about the different paths this match might have taken had Akmal not dropped de Villiers before he had scored. Irfan ran in from over the wicket and tormented Duminy with deliveries that pitched on a good length outside off stump and jagged into the left-handed batsman. Three times in a row, Irfan struck Duminy on the pad and bellowed appeals for lbw. He was denied each time because the impact was too high.In his next over, after hitting Faf du Plessis on the glove, Irfan took the umpire out of the equation by bowling Duminy between bat and pad with a fuller delivery. He celebrated with vigour, but in his next over – the innings’ 149th – Irfan ran out of rope the umpires had given him by following through on the danger area once again. He was suspended from bowling further in the innings. With Irfan lost, and Junaid Khan blunt, Ajmal was the only threat and du Plessis steered South Africa past 500 and the lead past 400. Ajmal gradually worked his way through the tail to pick up a six-wicket haul, but the end of South Africa’s innings provided little relief for Pakistan.

Middlesex bow out despite Denly blast

ScorecardSean Ervine’s first half-century of this season’s competition enabled holders Hampshire to overcome Middlesex’s plucky challenge at the Ageas Bowl by eight runs and set up a FLt20 home quarter-final against Lancashire next week.Ervine hit an unbeaten 60 and shared in a stand of 101 in 9.5 overs for the fourth wicket with consistent veteran Neil McKenzie, who made 47 not out, as Hampshire accelerated over the second half of their innings to reach a formidable 190 for 3.But Middlesex, who needed to win to stand any chance of qualifying for the latter stages, were undaunted and came desperately close to causing an upset by finishing with 182 for 7 thanks to Joe Denly’s belligerent 67 and a rapid 29 from Eoin Morgan. Essex, beaten at Chelmsford but still able to qualify for the last eight if Middlesex lost, watched tv coverage of the last over as Middlesex failed to make the 16 runs they needed,Hampshire’s win was their eighth from 10 South Group matches. Their only defeat was by Kent and they had make do with a point from a washed-out match, against Essex at Chelmsford.Hampshire soon lost the prolific Michael Carberry against Middlesex and then James Vince, both to Kyle Mills, after winning the toss and at the halfway stage they were only 89 for 3. But then Ervine and McKenzie came together and Middlesex quickly saw the initiative snatched away from them, Ervine hitting four sixes and four fours in a 34-ball innings. When Middlesex responded Paul Stirling and Dawid Malan each contributed to a feisty start and the innings gained impetus when England’s Morgan, playing only his second match in this year’s competition, joined Denly in raising hopes of an unexpected outcome.Morgan and Denly put on 58 in seven overs but Morgan’s innings ended with an indecisive chip shot to Jimmy Adams at mid-on at 104 and for all Middlesex’s later aggression, the target was always beyond them. Denly was last out at 181 from the penultimate ball, caught behind off Chris Wood but it was a brave knock by the middle order batsman in which he struck three sixes and three fours off 44 balls.Middlesex’s failure to win let in Essex in third spot despite their defeat by Surrey.

Swann penalised for serious dissent

Graeme Swann has been given a three-point penalty by the ECB for showing serious dissent after he was given out on the final day against Durham

ESPNcricinfo staff03-May-2013Graeme Swann has been given a three-point penalty by the ECB for showing serious dissent after he was given out on the final day of the County Championship match against Durham at Trent Bridge.Swann, who was making his return from injury following elbow surgery, was adjudged lbw to Scott Borthwick for 57, ending a final-wicket stand of 75 with Ajmal Shahzad which had taken Nottinghamshire to the brink of safety. His dismissal left Durham needing to chase 183 in 23 overs which they knocked off with ease although Swann took 4 for 56.Swann was reported by umpires Steve Garratt and Peter Willey for a level two breach of the ECB code – showing serious dissent at an umpire’s decision by word or action – and was called to see them after the match finished. The penalty will remain on Swann’s record for two years and the accumulation of nine or more penalty points in any two year period will result in an automatic suspension. He was named in England’s Champions Trophy squad on Friday and is expected to be part of the Test series against New Zealand which begins later this month.

O time de Abel Braga volta a campo no sábado.

Seguro, Rodinei fez 2 a 2.

England bowlers wrest advantage

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Gautam Gambhir struck his second successive half-century•BCCI

The feverish speculation over the nature of the Eden Gardens track finally came to an end as 83-year-old curator Prabhir Mukherjee unveiled a seemingly benign surface, the sort India’s batsmen have feasted on at home in recent years. MS Dhoni may not have got the square turner he wanted, but for the third Test in a row he won an important toss, and chose to bat, aware that India had amassed 600-plus scores in the first innings in each of their three previous Kolkata Tests.Though Sachin Tendulkar shrugged off one of the worst slumps of his career with a resolute 76, it was the visitors’ day as a high-quality England attack nipped out seven wickets on a track that gave them little encouragement. Monty Panesar again showed how improved a bowler he is, barely bowling a bad ball all day, James Anderson produced a reverse-swing masterclass, and they were backed up by the large-hearted efforts of a fit-again Steven Finn, who took the place of the ineffectual Stuart Broad. The England bowling was relentless, and were helped by the wastefulness of the India batsmen. At least three wickets were gifted away on a pitch that didn’t provide any alarming turn or bounce. Virender Sehwag was run-out after a schoolboy error, Gautam Gambhir played a loose cut after getting set and Yuvraj Singh gifted a catch to cover. In contrast, Sachin Tendulkar looked determined to break his run of low scores. Walking in 15 minutes before lunch, he was extremely watchful to begin with, happy to play out the unyielding Panesar, who had dismissed him both times in the Mumbai Test. Panesar was in the middle of a marathon 21-over spell in which he varied his flight and pace, and bowled the odd ball with the scrambled seam, all without bowling any hit-me deliveries. The runs dried up, and at the other end Finn and Anderson were getting the ball to swerve just a bit to worry Tendulkar outside off. Even when the ball was little more than 40 overs old, Anderson was getting the ball to reverse, highlighted by a dramatically indipping yorker to Tendulkar. The sustained pressure from both ends got the wicket of Virat Kohli, who nicked to second slip on 6 to extend his poor run in this series. There could have been further reward if Yuvraj had been given lbw when he was caught in front by an inducker from Anderson on nought. India would have been 136 for 5 if that appeal went England’s way.

Smart stats

  • Sachin Tendulkar scored his first half-century since the second innings of the Sydney Test in January 2012. In 10 innings in between, he had scored 153 runs at an average of 15.30.

  • During the course of his innings, Tendulkar went past Sunil Gavaskar to become the highest run-getter for India in Tests against England. He also shares top spot with Gavaskar on the list of India batsmen with the most fifty-plus scores (20) against England.

  • James Anderson dismissed Sachin Tendulkar for the eighth time in Tests. He moves level on top with Muttiah Muralitharan on the list of bowlers who have dismissed Tendulkar most often.

  • This 76 is Tendulkar’s sixth half-century at Eden Gardens, bringing him level on top with VVS Laxman on the list of batsmen with the most fifty-plus scores at the venue.

  • Tendulkar scored 15 runs off 18 balls from Anderson (three fours). However, all three boundaries were scored behind square on the off side.

  • Tendulkar scored only 20 runs off 83 balls from Monty Panesar. The scoring rate (1.44) is the second-lowest for Tendulkar in an innings against a particular bowler in matches since 2002 (min 60 balls faced in innings).

  • Tendulkar, who top-scored with 76, scored 40 runs (53%) on the off side. In contrast, Gambhir, who made 60, scored 43 runs on the off side (72%).

  • The 79-run stand between Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh is the second-highest fifth-wicket stand for India against England in Kolkata. The highest is 214 between Mohammad Azharuddin and Ravi Shastri in 1984.

Instead, an increasingly fluent Tendulkar and a positive Yuvraj brought some stability to the innings. Though there were a few trademark Tendulkar strokes before tea, including an effortless backfoot punch down the ground for four, he was at his best in the final session. The first ball after the break was glanced to fine leg for four to bring up his first Test half-century since the New Year’s Test in Sydney, a milestone which would have had his legions of fans dancing for joy, just like Harbhajan Singh was in the dressing room. Over the next hour there were paddle-sweeps, a punch over point and a cover drive reminiscent of his pomp. Thoughts of a first Test century in nearly two years were brushed aside by the nagging Anderson, though, who induced an edge to keeper with Tendulkar on 76.Before Tendulkar, it was Gambhir who held the innings together with his second successive half-century. It wasn’t his most fluent performance – he was beaten several times early on and edged a few – but he was far more assured once Panesar came on as early as the eighth over. The footwork was more certain, and the tendency to be fidgety that he has repeatedly shown against the quicks reduced. Panesar was greeted with a slap past cover in the first over, and was launched over mid-on in his next.Early on, Sehwag was looking comfortable, untroubled by the defensive fields England set for him and India rattled along at more than 4.5 an over. Then came a moment of madness. Sehwag played what looked like the shot of the session, a fluid whip towards midwicket; Samit Patel, often the butt of jokes about his weight, sprinted across from deep-square leg to make a tumbling stop and Finn was on hand to rifle the ball back accurately. There was plenty of time for three, but both batsmen had dawdled the first two, and though Gambhir screamed ‘no,no’ while looking at the fielder, Sehwag started to hare back for the third, and it was too late to turn back. That immediately brought down the scoring rate, with only seven coming off the next six overs. With the ball not doing much, Gambhir and Pujara calmly set about building the innings. However, with lunch approaching, Pujara misjudged the length of a Panesar arm ball and stayed back, only to miss the ball which hit the middle of the stumps. Panesar was whistling and dancing in celebration, knowing well the importance of the wicket of India’s form batsman of this series. With the old ball reverse-swinging prodigiously, the new ball was delayed till the 87th over, and it produced dividends almost immediately. MS Dhoni and R Ashwin had been together for about an hour, looking to safely take India through to stumps but Anderson cleaned up Ashwin for 21.India would have been mighty pleased when they ended the first day on the square turner in Mumbai on 266 for 6. On a far less testing surface in Kolkata, the first-day total of 273 for 7 will be far less satisfying.

Harris five revives England ambitions

A five-for in the only innings so far of Glamorgan’s match with Kent means that James Harris is well and truly back in business

They are not the most flattering figures of his fledgling career, by any means, but a five-for in the only innings so far of this match means that James Harris is well and truly back in business.Still just 22, the fast bowler from Swansea has been earning rave reviews ever since he made his first-class debut for Glamorgan as a 16-year-old and became the county’s youngest player to take a wicket at that level. England U-19s and Lions selection followed in due course and there is no doubt he remains firmly on the selectors’ radar, even though the competition for places in the international pace department may never have been stronger. So far as this season goes, though, Harris is just pleased to be fit and firing again.A groin injury that required surgery forced him to not only miss last winter’s Lions tours but also to sit out the first half of this year’s Championship campaign. And when he did return, progress – unsurprisingly – was steady rather than spectacular with three wickets in three innings, against Leicestershire and Northants. All that has changed here, though, with an analysis of 5 for 118 from 33 overs. Four of those strikes came on the first day and this morning he deservedly bowled Mark Davies with a fast and straight delivery to make sure he finished with a handful for the eighth time in his first-class career. The immediate aim for Harris is to keep on taking wickets for Glamorgan but he admits to having his eyes on representative honours, despite being a late-starter this campaign. “There are a couple of Lions games coming up which I would love to be involved in and then there are tours this winter,” he said. “It was so frustrating missing out last winter.”Frustration was the name of the game on Friday with only 38 of a possible 96 overs being bowled. During that time Kent added another 146 runs for the loss of five more wickets – but with rain arriving in mid-afternoon and then returning just when a re-start seemed imminent, a draw is now the likeliest result.Whatever happens, Kent have bagged a full haul of batting points for the first time this season. They did so by passing 400 with three overs to spare and despite losing first-day century-makers Brendan Nash and Darren Stevens within the opening half an hour. Huw Waters, handicapped by illness yesterday, did the damage with the second new-ball. He also had an appeal against Geraint Jones, for a catch behind, turned down when the former England keeper had scored just 3.Jones went on to make an unbeaten 69, from 96 balls, enabling Kent to shrug off their early losses. And importantly, he received good support from tail-enders Matt Coles and Davies. Even when Davies fell to Harris, the fun continued with No. 11 Charlie Shreck driving spinner Dean Cosker for a straight six – his first maximum in first-class cricket after 119 innings without clearing the rope.If that blow was something of a shock to the system, the arrival of rain most certainly was not. The forecast is good for the second half of this match but Kent’s bowlers will need to go some to earn the promotion hopefuls a victory from here.

ICC and FICA to mediate in West Indies dispute

The ICC and FICA will be participating in efforts aimed at ending the stand-off between the West Indies Cricket Board and the West Indies Players’ Association

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jun-2012The ICC and FICA (Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations) will be participating in efforts aimed at ending the stand-off – largely over the issue of contracts and the running of West Indies Cricket – between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA). Meetings have been scheduled between June 10 to 13 in Barbados, wherein the ICC and FICA will mediate in the negotiations between the two disputing parties.”The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) wish to advise all stakeholders of West Indies cricket that they will be meeting to discuss the terms and conditions, which could result in a mutually agreeable, revised Collective Bargaining Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding between the parties,” a joint statement said. The ICC will be represented by its general manager of Cricket Dave Richardson and acting head of Legal Ian Higgins. Tim May, the FICA chief executive, will represent his organisation. “The joint mediation team has established guidelines for the process, one of which is strict confidentiality, and both the WICB and WIPA have agreed to adhere to those guidelines,” the statement said.It is understood that Dinanath Ramnarine, the former WIPA president and chief executive, who resigned from his post in late March this year, is likely to be present at the meetings. WICB sources fear Ramnarine could prove to be a stumbling block, as he has been against a new CBA/MoU and happy to stick with the existing. It is in this area the pair of Richardson and May, acting as facilitators, could play an important role in paving a new path that could be beneficial for both the WICB and the WIPA.The impasse reached its height in 2009, when several senior members of the West Indies team boycotted the home series against Bangladesh. West Indies were forced to field a makeshift side that lost both the Test and ODI series, and was then retained for the Champions Trophy that year.
