    THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is the second time in a matter of weeks that a Chelsea academy player has been jettisoned from the first-team squad. George Hill, Hamidullah Qadri bag four each as England make short work of Nigeria

A round up of the Under-19 World Cup matches played on January 25, 2020

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jan-2020
ScorecardEngland allrounder George Hill, playing his first game of the Under-19 World Cup, finished with figures of 4 for 12 to help England bowl Nigeria out for 58 in 27.5 overs in the final Group D game at Kimberley. England, for whom this was their first win of the tournament, won by eight wickets with opener Sam Young finishing the game off with a six, as England racing to 64 for 2 in just 11 overs.Nigeria had opted to bat first, but the England seamers reduced them to 19 for 3 early. A 23-run fourth-wicket then took Nigeria past the forties, but then offspinner Hamidullah Qadri, who also took four wickets, and medium-pacer Hill bowled them out soon after. Nigeria captain Sylvester Okpe top-scored with 16.Young was brisk in England’s pursuit of 59, crunching five fours and two sixes in his 33-ball 39, while Hil, who batted at No.4, was not out on 7 when the winning runs were hit. Both teams will move to the Plate League stage of the tournament, having failed to come in the top two of their group. West Indies topped the group, with Australia finishing second.
ScorecardFour days after being bowled out for 41 by India, Japan slumped to 43 all out in their final Group A match, against Sri Lanka. In a match reduced to 22 overs a side, Sri Lanka chose to bowl, and took just 18.3 overs to rattle through Japan’s line-up, and only 8.3 to complete their chase.None of the Japan batsmen got into double figures, their No. 4 Debashish Sahoo coming closest with 9. Four Sri Lanka bowlers – Dilshan Madushanka, Sudeera Thilakaratne, Ashian Daniel and Navod Paranavithana – took two wickets each, with the other two coming via run-outs.Paranavithana fell early in Sri Lanka’s chase, before Mohammad Shamaz and Ravindu Rasantha steered their side home with an unbroken partnership of 38. The result confirmed that New Zealand – whose match against Japan didn’t produce a result – joined India in the quarter-finals.
ScorecardZimbabwe beat Scotland to notch their first win of the Under-19 World Cup, with Tadiwanashe Marumani leading the way. The opener smashed 85 off just 55 balls, including 12 fours and 4 sixes, as Zimbabwe won by eight wickets in just 17.1 overs after keeping Scotland to 140 all out.Put in to bat, Scotland were in deep trouble at 42 for 5 with the top five all back in the hut, but a lower middle-order rally prevented a complete rout. Allrounder Kess Sajjad made 68 off 71 from No.7, and was the last wicket to fall. He shared a 66-run stand for the sixth wicket with Daniel Cairns (28), and did the bulk of the scoring all through his time at the crease.Sakhumuzi Ndlela, the right-arm medium pacer, had done the early damage, taking four of the first five wickets. He ended with figures of 4 for 27, while Dion Myers and Tadiwanashe Nyangani had a couple of wickets each.In the chase, Marumani made it a no-contest, playing the dominant role in a 121-run stand for the second wicket that came off just 14 overs. He was out with just two needed for victory, and Milton Shumba finished things off in style, hitting a six with the scores level.Neither of Zimbabwe or Scotland have finished in the top two of Group C though, and both will thus be progressing to the Plate League knockouts. From Group C, Bangladesh and Pakistan will progress to the quarter-finals, having finished on top of the group.

Newcastle have a teen superstar who’s just as exciting as Miley

One of the Premier League’s breakout stars in the 2023/24 season has been Newcastle United’s Lewis Miley. The 17-year-old has risen quickly through the ranks at St James' Park to become a prominent first-team player under Eddie Howe.

The midfielder has played 26 times for the Newcastle first team this season, scoring once and registering three assists, including one in the Champions League at home against AC Milan.

There is little doubt that Howe wants to give youngsters more opportunities. Aside from Miley, the likes of Elliot Anderson have had a role to play under the former Bournemouth boss, and he has discussed a pathway for other youngsters, including Joe White.

Aside from academy graduates, Newcastle have also invested in talent further afield. Australian Garang Kuol is currently on loan at FC Volendam in The Netherlands, and he signed for the Toon from Central Coast Mariners in January 2023.

However, another player is coming through, also currently on loan, this time at Feyenoord, who might be right for a breakthrough season in 2024/25.

An exciting prospect on the wing

The player in question is 19-year-old Yankuba Minteh, a winger whom Newcastle signed from Danish side Odense BK for a fee rumoured to be around £5.8m. The youngster is already a full international with The Gambia and competed in the 2024 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Yankuba Minteh on loan at Feyenoord

In terms of his profile, Minteh is a direct winger who loves to get on the ball and run at defenders with his sheer pace.

One of the most prominent features of Minteh’s game is when he drives into the opposition penalty box. He ranks in the top 1% of positionally similar players in leagues comparable to the Eredivisie for carries into the penalty area per 90 minutes this season, 6.49, according to Fbref.

Minteh also works very hard off the ball, as his Fbref numbers reflect. The 19-year-old ranks in the top 2% among attackers for tackles won, with 1.78 per 90 minutes.

To break this down even further, Minteh wins 0.80 tackles per 90 in the final third, showing he is a diligent presser, something which would stand him in good stead in Newcastle’s system.

In total, the left-footed winger has scored eight goals and registered three assists for Feyenoord this season. That includes a Champions League goal away to Celtic in the final group game. Impressive numbers indeed.

Minteh's first-team hopes at Newcastle

After impressing for Feyenoord this season, there is no doubt Minteh will be hoping to return to St James’ next season and stake a claim for a first-team spot.

Minteh’s impressive work out of possession, as well as his direct nature with the ball, would certainly be a benefit to him in Howe’s direct and intense Newcastle side.

With lots of first-team experience behind him, both in Denmark for Odense BK and this season for Feyenoord, plus international tournament football under his belt, there is no reason to believe why Minteh cannot break into Newcastle’s squad next season.

Yankuba Minteh for Feyenoord

The 19-year-old will surely be hoping that he can follow the path set by the likes of Miley and become another exciting player for Newcastle under the tutelage of Howe.

Spurs thought they had the new Bale but he became an "awful signing"

Tottenham Hotspur were defeated at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out in the Premier League but Ange Postecoglou will be confident that his side can secure a positive finish to the campaign.

A fast start to the season shredded many pre-season predictions into tatters as Spurs soared into the title ascendancy, but progress has been punctuated by irregularity in form since Postecoglou made history by picking up three successive Premier League Manager of the Month awards across the opening months.

While recent recruitment has been on the money, after a fashion, Heung-min Son is arguably still the finest player on the books, the last of the old guard following Harry Kane's sale to Bayern Munich last summer.

Tottenham captain Heung-min Son.

Signed back in 2015, Son was part of a past wave of investment to bring Spurs to the fore, and while the club enjoyed comparative success during those days, too many signings failed to find even a portion of Son's success, with Georges-Kevin N'Koudou undoubtedly one of the worst.

When Spurs signed Georges-Kevin N'Koudou

One year before Tottenham swooped in for N'Koudou, they wrapped up the £12m signing of Clinton N'Jie from Lyon for around £12m, the dynamic forward touted for big things.

He fell by the wayside and moved on after only one campaign, replaced by N'koudou in 2016. with the winger completing an £11m move from Marseille, N'Jie heading to the French club on loan before penning a permanent transfer.

Kevin N'Koudou for Tottenham.

Sadly, Tottenham got it wrong on both occasions, with N'koudou, who had scored ten goals and supplied five assists in France the term before, flattering to deceive.

Georges-Kevin N'Koudou's stats at Spurs

Upon arrival, N'Koudou remarked that former Manchester United phenomenon Cristiano Ronaldo and Spurs stalwart Gareth Bale were among his biggest inspirations, influencing his style of play and playing into the possibility of immense success in north London.

He said: "It's true that I watched many Premier League games when I was a child as well and I remember a few players that made me want to come here – Gareth Bale for instance, who has played here.

"There was also Cristiano Ronaldo when he was playing for Manchester United. They inspired me because they play the way I like to – they like to challenge defenders, to dribble."

And in fairness, N'Koudou did offer such attributes, with his fleet-footedness and explosive qualities a perfect fit for prominence at a team such as Tottenham.

Gareth Bale.

However, the Cameroon international failed to live up to the hype and contributed with just one goal and two assists across 27 games in all competitions, leading podcaster Chris Miller to criticise the "awful signing", also noting that his woeful return in Tottenham colours "sapped" chairman Daniel Levy.

N'Koudou might have built his career back up now, leaving Spurs for around £5m back in 2019 after a string of unsuccessful loan spells.

This season, in the Saudi Pro League, the Damac FC star has plundered 15 goals and four assists from just 19 league appearances, finally living up to those one-time claims that he was the emulation of Bale that Tottenham so craved.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

Circumstances… differ, certainly, and Levy's promising-looking transfer business of late might have been conducted with the scars of former misfires such as this one still branded in memory.

Tottenham chiefs convinced 25 y/o is a strong upgrade as they prepare talks

Tottenham Hotspur chiefs apparently rate one club's 25-year-old star in very high esteem, with the north Londoners now readying talks to sign him.

The Lilywhites are locked in a fierce battle with Aston Villa for a place in the top four and qualification for the Champions League next season, and while the overall success of Postecoglou's campaign will hinder on their finish to 2023/2024, it's safe to say Spurs have been a far more exciting watch under the Australian.

He's implemented a high-pressing, fast-paced and electric brand of football since his arrival from Celtic last summer, and it's won over large sections of the fan base. The feeling around N17 has greatly changed since the last days of Antonio Conte, with the north London club holding a greater appeal to players in the transfer market as a result.

Tottenham sensationally beat European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Barcelona to the signings of Radu Dragusin and Lucas Bergvall in January, and Spurs have been named as contenders for in-demand Brentford striker Ivan Toney in the summer as well.

Brentford's Ivan Toney

Reports suggest that, no matter what happens in regards to their top-four push, Postecoglou will be backed with new Tottenham signings later this year.

One of the key areas which Tottenham want to strengthen is in defence, with there being a belief that they wish to sign another centre-back after Dragusin. Spurs apparently want two "top level" centre-backs across 2024, and one player said to be attracting their interest is Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

Tottenham readying talks with Lloyd Kelly

According to Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey, Tottenham are readying talks with Kelly ahead of the summer window. The Englishman will be a free agent as things stand, meaning Spurs can sign him without paying a penny to Bournemouth. However, Postecoglou faces stiff competition for Kelly, as Liverpool and Newcastle United are also eyeing a move.

Clubs abroad, like contenders AC Milan, Juventus and "multiple" sides from Germany, can agree to a pre-contract as rules dictate overseas clubs can commence official negotiations over personal terms right now.

Lloyd Kelly

That being said, those within Spurs rate the 25-year-old highly. As per Veysey, club chiefs are "convinced" that Kelly would be a "strong option" for next season. The "rapid" Cherries ace, who can play both as a full-back and in the centre, was a target for Spurs last summer.

Indeed, Tottenham made a concerted effort to bring in Kelly on deadline day but to no avail, with chairman Daniel Levy now handed the chance to bring him in for nothing soon.

Ange benches Werner in predicted Spurs lineup vs Wolves

Tottenham Hotspur are at home in the Premier League once again after last weekend's last-gasp victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, Brennan Johnson snatching three points at the death to propel the club back into the top four.

Hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon, Ange Postecoglou's side perch in Champions League contention after Aston Villa fell to defeat against Manchester United on Sunday and could now strengthen their place ahead of the late stretch of the campaign.

Wolves dramatically defeated Spurs in November after Pablo Sarabia masterminded two stunning late strikes to turn the tide at Molineux, but Postecoglou will be confident that his side can secure back-to-back wins for the first time in 2024.

Long-term absentees Manor Solomon and Ryan Sessegnon remain out but Tottenham are clicking into gear and could unleash Heung-min Son from the start after the skipper's creative cameo against Brighton last time out, supplying Johnson with a deft pass after returning from the Asia Cup with South Korea.

There are a few fresh injury concerns however, and Postecoglou might have to make four alterations to last week's victory as his side continue to build cohesion.

1 GK – Guglielmo Vicario

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Guglielmo Vicario joined Tottenham from Empoli for an initial £17m fee last summer and has been largely excellent so far, starting all 24 Premier League fixtures.

He's sure to start against Wolves, hungry for a first clean sheet in eight matches.

2 RB – Radu Dragusin

Radu Dragusin in action for Genoa.

Postecoglou has grudgingly revealed that Pedro Porro is expected to miss the forthcoming fixture with an injury issue, but the Spaniard's absence provides the perfect opportunity to hand £27m January addition from Genoa, Radu Dragusin, his first starting berth.

The Romanian defender is aggressive and has previously been lauded for his "complete & dominant" style in the backline by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Naturally a centre-back, Dragusin has played at right-back before and might just pip Emerson Royal to a starting spot.

3 CB – Cristian Romero

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.

Cristian Romero has captained Tottenham across the past four games in the English top-flight but will likely hand the armband back over to Son, though he is sure to keep his place in the rearguard as his team fight to keep hold of fourth place.

Aggressive and brutish on occasion, Romero's disciplinary record has left much to be desired this term but there is no disputing the high-class quality and command he stamps into the backline, with three goals this term to boot.

4 CB – Micky van de Ven

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven

Tottenham beat Liverpool to the £43m signing of Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg in August and what a player he is, enjoying a sensational start to life on English shores.

Of course, Van de Ven missed two months of action with a hamstring injury that started a miserable spell of form during November and December that pulled Postecoglou's side away from title contention, but he's back now and impressing with his blend of defensive acumen and elite athleticism.

5 LB – Ben Davies

Spurs defender Ben Davies.

The full-backs are falling down at N17 and it looks like Destiny Udogie will be joining Porro in the medical room against Gary ON'Neil's side, with Ben Davies the likely candidate to step in.

The Wales international, aged 30, started nine league matches in a row before the new year in the thick of Spurs' injury crisis and will offer stability down the left flank.

6 CM – Yves Bissouma

Yves Bissouma.

Returning off the bench against the Seagulls after returning from AFCON, Yves Bissouma should be handed a starting role against Wolves, with his tough-tackling expertise needed to take control, once dubbed a "monster" of a player by journalist Aaron Stokes.

As per FBref, the Malian ranks among the top 2% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 7% for successful take-ons, the top 3% for tackles and the top 9% for interceptions per 90.

7 CM – Pape Matar Sarr

Spurs midfielder Pape Sarr celebrating against Bournemouth.

It's quite simple: when Pape Matar Sarr plays, Tottenham thrive. Enjoying a tremendous breakout campaign, Sarr has started 17 league games this term and has posted three goals and two assists, completed 89% of his passes and averaged 5.1 ball recoveries per game.

His relentless work-rate is exactly what is needed to overcome the hard-working Wolves.

8 RW – Dejan Kulusevski

Tottenham ace Dejan Kulusevski.

Some players have the deadly finishing ability, while others are endowed with sublime creativity, but Dejan Kulusevski is perfecting the art of energy and application, threading it into a rounded skill set that makes him a very singular threat in Postecoglou's team.

The Swede has scored five goals and supplied two assists across 22 Premier League matches this season but it is his turbo-charged approach that makes him so important down the right flank.

9 AM – James Maddison

James Maddison in action.

James Maddison has yet to score since returning from what felt like an interminable spell on the sidelines last month but he has been in fine fettle, supplying an assist and creating seven key passes across three fixtures.

The England international is one of Europe's finest playmakers and opens up so many dimensions for Tottenham's attack when playing.

10 LW – Heung-min Son

Heung-min Son celebrating for Tottenham.

Son would be forgiven for returning from the Asia Cup a tad dejected after South Korea's shock semi-final defeat against Jordan, but the 31-year-old performed with fire against Brighton, delightfully placing Johnson's assist.

Timo Werner has started all four Premier League matches – racking up two assists – since joining from RB Leipzig on loan last month but will surely move to the bench against Wolves.

How England should line up vs Denmark at Euro 2024: Three Lions need to replace erratic Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield with relentless Conor Gallagher

The combative and speedy midfielder gives the Three Lions a better chance of preventing Christian Eriksen from running the show

For the more optimistic of fans, England's victory over Serbia was very encouraging, an opening win in a European Championship for only the second time in 11 attempts, plus a clean sheet. And there was a statement performance from Jude Bellingham, who looks set to be one of the stars of the tournament.

To the glass-half-empty brigade, however, there was a lot to be concerned about. Once more England could not build on the momentum of a good start and some of their very best players, particularly Phil Foden and Harry Kane, barely got involved in the play.

Their next game is against stronger and more experienced opponents in Denmark, who ran England dangerously close in the Euro 2020 semi-finals. The Danes had a disappointing 1-1 draw against Slovenia in their first game, but Christian Eriksen delivered a life-affirming performance in midfield, practically running the match three years after suffering a cardiac arrest in his side's Euros opener.

So how should Gareth Southgate set up his team in Frankfurt? GOAL picks our preferred line up as England eye another victory to fully take control of Group C and look to respond to their critics at the same time…

GettyGK: Jordan Pickford

Pickford only had to make one save against Serbia. but showed quick reactions to turn Dusan Vlahovic's long-range effort over the bar, and there is no question that he should start again. He took no chances with the ball at his feet and tried to catch Serbia out with long punts forward to Kane, albeit with limited success.

Walker was one of England's standout performers in Gelsenkirchen, helping set up the only goal and flying forward with attacking intent. He remains firmly at the front of the queue of Southgate's right-back options.

GettyCB: John Stones

Stones did the basics right against Serbia, getting some important blocks and tackles in. He looked a little rusty on the ball, but that is natural after a season that was frequently disrupted by injury, and the only way to get him back up to speed is with more games.

Crystal Palace defender Guehi had a superb game against Serbia, his first in a major tournament, showing remarkable poise on the ball and moving it around with simplicity. He deserves another run out and has a track record of frustrating Rasmus Hojlund, after he took on the Manchester United striker in Palace's 1-0 win at Old Trafford in September.

Crystal Palace manager latest as John Textor thoughts on Hodgson revealed

After a heavy 4-1 defeat to Premier League rivals Brighton last weekend, things are looking pretty bleak at Crystal Palace right now. Across the last 17 league matches – nearly half a season's worth of football – only Nottingham Forest (14) and newly-promoted Burnley and Sheffield United (both nine) have picked up fewer points than Roy Hodgson's side (16).

To make matters worse, Michael Olise is now facing a two-month absence after aggravating a hamstring issue. Olise had experienced discomfort in that area in the midweek win over Sheffield United, but Hodgson still took the risk of bringing him on with his side 3-0 down against Brighton, and he paid the price.

What's more, defender Marc Guehi is out for a number of weeks too, while Eberechi Eze will join him on the treatment table as games against relegation rivals Everton, Burnley and Luton creep into view. Predictably, in such miserable circumstances, the manager's position is coming under scrutiny.

Textor wants Hodgson out of Palace

According to The Guardian's Ed Aarons, who offered a Hodgson update, Palace's primary shareholder John Textor has been in favour of a managerial change for "several weeks" now. However, he hasn't spoken with chairman Steve Parish over the past seven days.

Parish has "strongly contemplated" dismissing Hodgson and has sounded out potential replacements, but key targets are apparently reluctant to take over with little time to make an impact.

There's a feeling among certain members of the board at Selhurst Park that the club missed an opportunity to make a change after the 5-0 defeat at Arsenal last month, when there was a 10-day window to prepare for the next game against Sheffield United.

Root of Palace's problems is clear

Palace's biggest problem isn't that they sacked Hodgson – it's that they reappointed him as manager in the first place. It's been around 11 months now since the club parted company with Patrick Vieira, a decision that was justified in the midst of a 12-game winless run that seemed destined to end in relegation.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson returned to South London and carried out the firefighter role effectively, safely guiding the Eagles to an 11th-place finish with an 11-point cushion to the bottom three. When Vieira had been sacked, the gap was down to just three points.

Crystal Palace can hire 'next England manager' to end Hodgson nightmare

The 44-year-old has an impressive track record in the game.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 6, 2024

There was a renewed feel-good factor around the club at that moment, but the smart sporting move would have been to shake hands and embark on another new project. Instead, Palace fell into the trap of appointing Hodgson on a permanent basis, ignoring the warning signs from his earlier tenure.

They hadn't offered him a new deal ahead of the expiry of his contract in 2021 because they felt they needed a refresh and a change of direction, so going back to the Englishman was clearly a regressive step. In that sense, it feels inevitable they've ended up repeating the cycle, except this time there appears a very real threat of relegation.

'We've won more overs than we've lost' – Tom Moody

Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody has attributed their up-and-down season to losing key moments in matches they had otherwise dominated. Sunrisers have six points from seven matches and are currently looking to snap a three-match losing streak. One of Sunrisers’ handicaps, the unavailability of captain Kane WIlliamson in five of their matches due to a shoulder issue, has meant that seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has had to lead the side in five of their games. Moody gave a positive assessment of him while reinforcing that the switching leadership wasn’t as big a factor as their tardiness at finishing games off.”Obviously it would have been nice to have Kane fit from the beginning of the tournament,” Moody said on Tuesday. “I think when Bhuvi captained the side, he did a very good job. I don’t think it’s a leadership issue at all. I think it’s simply there’s been moments – if you look at our games [up]till today in detail, there’s been aspects of our game that we haven’t got quite right. But I think we’ve won more overs than lost in the tournament.”Look at KKR, very first game – we’d won [the first] 90 percent of that game. And we lost it. There are many examples like that. Mumbai Indians here – we played exceptionally well and then we found ourselves in no-man’s land. And that last game here, we dominated the first half of the game, we got off to a steady start. We didn’t quite capitalise in the first ten overs, what we should have done having not lost wickets. We then found ourselves going backwards. So we’re winning the majority of a lot of the contest, but we’re not finishing the job.”The previous game, the one against Delhi Capitals, was particularly demoralising for Sunrisers who, having putting up 72 for the opening stand, were bowled out for 116 in a chase of 156. After the game, David Warner had noted that leaving out multiple experienced middle-order batsmen for the game had hurt Sunrisers. Williamson’s return had meant Mohammed Nabi had to drop out of the XI. Among the domestic players who were left out was Manish Pandey, whose poor returns as a Sunrisers player continue to build up.Pandey has made 54 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 93.10 and hasn’t hit a single six this season. His highest score of 19 this season is his sixth highest overall for the franchise – he has only five scores of 20-plus in 18 innings overall.”Obviously Manish hasn’t quite hit the ground running in the last season and a bit,” Moody said. “In the last year and the start of this season. No one will be more disappointed than Manish himself. He’s a player that’s got a lot of pride in his game and he’s a good performer. He came into this season in some good form as well, having scored runs in the domestic season and having captained his side to victory. So it hasn’t quite worked out for him, to this point. It’s really down to him to turn things around. I think that’s what’s the exciting part for him and for us. He still will have an opportunity to turn things around and have an impact this season.”There wasn’t, however, a clear indication from moody whether Sunrisers would switch back to having either Pandey or Yusuf Pathan back as they face table-toppers Chennai Super Kings at home on Wednesday. But whether they’ll lean again on experience or not, Moody said that most importantly, they had moved on from the collapse.”Ask Delhi Capitals. They’re going okay,” Moody said when asked about how a team bounces back from such a defeat. “The most important thing when you have a disappointing loss is you do reflect and then you move on. You don’t ignore it. It’s important to reflect and have a good look at it and you move on as quick as possible as a group. And we’ve done that.”
