Rangers keen on free agent Delph

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly keen on signing central midfielder Fabian Delph as a free agent.

The Lowdown: Great career

Delph has had a great career in English football, winning the Premier League title twice with Manchester City, among other trophies (Transfermarkt), while he has also been capped 20 times by the England national team.

However, he is now a free agent after being released by Everton, having been sidelined with consistent injury problems.

The Latest: Rangers keen

As per Football League World, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team are taking a keen interest in Delph, but face a lot of competition from the English Championship for his signature.

Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, West Brom and Reading are also thought to be looking at a potential move.

The Verdict: Could be worth it

Even though signing Delph would come with risks given his injury problems and the fact that he has not played this season, it could be one that would be worth it in the long run.

He is a player experienced in the UEFA Champions League, a competition where the Gers could do with some leadership after two opening losses to Ajax and Napoli respectively.

Nonetheless, the 32-year-old can also play almost anywhere on the pitch, and given that assistant manager Roy Makaay and five other Light Blues share the same agency as him, this is a deal that could well be pushed through ahead of their competition.

Wolves "definitely want" a new striker

Wolverhampton Wanderers are believed to be eyeing a new centre-forward addition before the transfer window slams shut, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

What’s the word?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the reliable source suggested that the Old Gold are interested in bringing in a striker over the next week or so, despite having only recently signed Goncalo Guedes from Valencia for £27.5m.

Asked whether the Portuguese gem could take on that role through the middle this season, Jones replied: “A few people seem to think that is a possibility but my information on this is that Wolves are still trying for a centre forward for sure. My source there says they definitely want one and to expect an arrival.”

Manager Bruno Lage has also confirmed that the Molineux outfit are “looking for a striker” before the September deadline, having been linked with the likes of Goncalo Ramos and Sasa Kalajdzic of late.

Vital for Lage

Bringing in a new striking addition could well be vital for Lage and co this season, with the early signs so far in the new campaign suggesting that it could well be a repeat of last term.

The 2021/22 campaign saw only the three relegated clubs score fewer goals than Wolves in the top flight – having netted at a rate of just one per game – and those struggles in front of goal have carried over into the new season, having scored just once in three league matches thus far.

The previously prolific Raul Jimenez – who netted 30 league goals over his first two seasons in England – was restricted to just six last term, having struggled to revive his form following his life-threatening head injury in November 2020.

The lack of a genuine competitor had perhaps seen him thrust back into the spotlight too soon, with young Fabio Silva failing to prove himself as a consistent presence in attack, scoring just four times since his £35.6m arrival two years ago.

While the 20-year-old has currently hit form on loan at Anderlecht – where he has registered seven goal involvements in as many games –  his exit over the summer was no real surprise considering that he failed to score in 26 first-team games last season.

South Korea international Hwang Hee-chan showed glimpses of his quality in his debut season at the club last term, although the 26-year-old – who was signed on a permanent deal earlier this year following his initial loan move – has largely been deployed on the flanks by Lage.

As such, it has become clear that bringing in a new striker now seems a necessity if Wolves are to enjoy a successful season, with the current crop only set to continue being held back by their attacking deficiencies.

Journalist shares Diop to Fulham update

Reliable journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that Issa Diop is still very much a target for Fulham this summer.

The Lowdown: Fulham enter talks

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a somewhat successful four-year spell in the Premier League with West Ham United, but has recently found opportunities hard to come by.

This has seen the centre-back being linked with a move away from the London Stadium, with the Cottagers, alongside French outfit Lyon, credited with an interest.

Earlier in the window, it was widely reported that Marco Silva’s side had opened talks with the Irons regarding a potential switch, though nothing has progressed much since.

The Latest: Fulham still keen on Diop

Asked during a fan Q&A on Twitter whether Fulham were still in for Diop, Nixon responded:

“One of a few options … that include Vestergaard …”

The Verdict: Ideal candidate

Silva is believed to be prioritising signing a new centre-back before the end of the window, and with Diop being a player that Fulham have held a long-standing interest in, you’d imagine that he’d be the one at the top of the boss’ wish-list.

The Frenchman, dubbed a ‘monster’ by AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho, only made ten starts for the Hammers last season, but averaged 3.2 clearances and won 1.2 of his aerial duels per match, via WhoScored, highlighting the instant impact he can make.

Standing at 6 foot 3, the Frenchman could also add some much-needed height to the Portuguese’s backline as he prepares his side for their exciting campaign back in the top flight.

Southampton chasing Armando Broja again

Southampton could be set to recapture one of their old loanees if reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, Ralph Hasenhuttl could be set to reunite with former loanee Armando Broja.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he stated: “It does look like they’re going to struggle for goals. They could still go back in for Broja.

“All the time that he stays at Chelsea, and other clubs look elsewhere, it builds the case that Southampton could yet go back for Broja. I wouldn’t totally rule that one out.”

An insanely good signing

The Saints are a side crying out for a striker, as they became incredibly reliant on the Albanian’s presence up top alongside whoever his strike partner may have been.

They have been scampering for a replacement, however to get him back to the club would make the most sense as he featured 32 times last season.

The only stumbling block could be the reported £50m fee, which may prove insurmountable.

Despite only scoring six league goals, at the age of just 20 he still has so much room left to grow.

Southampton are a side renowned for their youth development, and under Hasenhuttl these numbers can only increase. He has all the attributes to become a top striker.

Last season he ranked in the 86th percentile for aerials won per 90, which would be particularly important for the coming season to bring the likes of Sekou Mara into play.

The two could quickly form a wonderful partnership together and prop up the Saints’ strike force for many years to come.

Alex Goldberg was quoted as labelling the forward as “insanely strong”, highlighting the danger of him running with the ball on the counter and indeed, he’d be an insanely good signing for Hasenhuttl and co this summer. His frightening speed combined with his 6 foot 2 frame makes him a physical anomaly, akin to the likes of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

The Saints boss will be hoping that if he can tempt Broja to one more season at the St Mary’s Stadium, he might see the vision that could see him battling for golden boot awards with the Norwegian goal machine. Who knows how high his ceiling can go?

West Brom announce Okay Yokuslu deal

Big news has emerged from West Bromwich Albion today as the Baggies announced they had reached an agreement to sign Okay Yokuslu on a free transfer.

What’s the news?

In a recent Twitter post, the club proudly confirmed that the Turkey international would be arriving at the Hawthorns.

They revealed: “We can confirm we have reached an agreement to sign @Okayokuslu on a three-year contract. Welcome home, Okay!”

Supporters will be buzzing

The 28-year-old joined Celta back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Trabzonspor. During his time with the Spanish club, the midfielder made 81 appearances in total where he scored two goals and delivered two assists.

He also completed two loan spells away from the club before terminating his contract.

The first of those loan spells saw him make 16 Premier League appearances with the Baggies throughout the second half of their 2020/21 season.

In those appearances, the Turk ended up winning 33 tackles in total and made more interceptions (42) than any other player in the Baggies’ squad at the time.

He also made 25 blocks, 40 clearances and 89 successful pressures during his short stint with the Midlands club.

While he ultimately saw the Baggies get relegated at the end of that season, it’s safe to say that he did have an impact on the team in terms of his defensive output.

That shows, first and foremost why supporters will be buzzing, but also why this is such a great move from the club to secure, particularly on a free transfer.

Even though West Brom only conceded 45 goals throughout their previous Championship campaign, having a player like the former Celta figure in their ranks would definitely help improve the team defensively and make them much tougher to play against.

If the player can slot into Steve Bruce’s side and pick up where he left off last time at the club, this would surely strengthen the team and give them a great boost to their chances of securing promotion back to the Premier League.

Journalist provides Broja update

West Ham have been heavily linked with a move for Chelsea striker Armando Broja in recent weeks and it seems as if David Moyes is definitely keen on the Albania international.

What’s the word?

In a recent interview with GiveMeSport, journalist Pete O’Rourke said:

“He does seem pretty high on West Ham’s list right now, Armando Broja.

“He obviously had a very good season on loan at Southampton and I think David Moyes would prefer to sign players with Premier League experience, if possible he does like players who are happy to adapt to the Premier League and can hit the ground running and Broja is someone with huge potential as he showed during his loan at Southampton.”

The 20-year-old is a man in demand after catching the eye in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side last season, with West Ham seemingly among the frontrunners, although considering Romelu Lukaku is set to return to Inter after a disastrous season, the Hammers may find it harder to prise him away from Stamford Bridge.

Supporters will be delighted

Signing a striker should be the number one priority for West Ham this summer.

For too long they have relied upon Michail Antonio as the sole option up front, and considering he turns 33 next year, a younger alternative is required next season if the Hammers are to build upon their recent success.

Broja notched nine goals in his first taste of senior English football last season, including a wonderful solo goal in the Saints’ 3-1 win against West Ham in the FA Cup, so Moyes has seen first-hand what the youngster is capable of.

The young forward has already shown that he is capable of playing in the Premier League and clearly has a lot of room to develop, so could be exactly what Moyes needs as he looks to improve upon his attacking options next season.

Broja is a quick, powerful and a willing runner, in a similar mould to Antonio, so supporters will surely be delighted to hear that the Hammers are keen on bringing him in.

Aston Villa: Villans eyeing Gareth Bale

Aston Villa are keeping an eye on Gareth Bale ahead of a potential move, according to The Guardian.

The Lowdown: Madrid exit

Bale, labelled as ‘world class’ by Wales teammate Joe Allen, is on the lookout for a new club ahead of the World Cup this winter.

The 32-year-old forward will officially become a free agent at the end of the month after spending nine years with Real Madrid.

The versatile forward has scored 183 goals and provided 139 assists at club level in more than 500 games, and it looks as if Villa Park is now a possible destination for Bale when he leaves the Bernabeu.

The Latest: Villa links

The Guardian shared a transfer rumour mill on Thursday morning, with one of those stories on Bale.

They claimed that Villa, Newcastle and Tottenham are all keeping an eye on the forward, who is keen to find a new side ahead of the World Cup.

The Verdict: Suarez alternative?

Steven Gerrard is seemingly keen to add to his attacking ranks ahead of his first full season in the Midlands after already making four summer signings. The club have continued to be linked with Luis Suarez, so Bale could be viewed as a possible alternative.

Bale impressed back with Spurs during the 2020/21 season, contributing to 13 Premier League goals in 20 games. He is predominantly a winger but does have experience of playing as a centre-forward, so he could be a shrewd signing to rival Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings, while also providing a brilliant option out wide.

Sunderland want to remove ‘toxic’ owners

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has claimed that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus could end a ‘toxic’ era at Sunderland if he buys out Stewart Donald and Charlie Methven.

The Lowdown: Sunderland takeover development

As per Football Insider, Louis-Dreyfus currently owns 41 percent of the Black Cats, which amounts to a controlling stake in the club.

However, The Sunderland Echo have recently reported that Louis-Dreyfus is looking to take full-control of the North East outfit.

Football Insider understands that Methven and Donald would part with their shares for £10.7m.

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Maguire believes that the day-to-day running of Sunderland would change drastically if Louis-Dreyfus were to take over.

Speaking with Football Insider, the Sky Sports football finance guru claimed:

“Decisions under this format would be made more smoothly.

“Methven and Donald are a toxic legacy of some of the worst years in the club’s history as far as fans are concerned.

“They had two years of parachute payments in League One and failed to get promoted. Fingers have to be pointed at Donald and Methven because it is ultimately their responsibility.

“With a majority stake, there can be more focus and the club can be run on a more streamlined basis.

“If he is to be constrained in terms of what he can invest because all shareholders have to agree on the level of spending, they are then acting liking an anchor.”

The Verdict: Needs to happen

With years of misery endured under the poor leadership of Donald and Methven, Sunderland needs a fresh take on its ownership.

If Louis-Dreyfus were to take full-control, this would spark a new era within the Black Cats, with a streamlined running of the club taking a priority as they finally bounce back to the second tier.

Therefore, if the possibility for a complete takeover is there, Sunderland fans will be urging Donald and Methven to accept the offer, happy at the thought of the pair’s departure.

Leeds: Orta set to release Casilla

Victor Orta is set to release Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla this summer.

What’s the word?

That’s according to reports in Spain (via Sport Witness), who claim that the 35-year-old shot-stopper will return to Elland Road following the conclusion of his season-long loan deal with Elche CF, with it appearing likely that Leeds’ Spanish sporting director will then terminate the former Spain international’s contract in LS11 – which is due to run until the summer of 2023.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The report goes on to state that, as a result of the former Real Madrid man’s professionalism after losing his starting spot to Edgar Badia earlier this season, should Casilla’s wage demands not be too expensive, Francisco could look to bring the goalkeeper back to the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero in the summer transfer window.

Orta must axe Casilla

Considering just how little Casilla has featured for Leeds in recent seasons, in addition to the fact the 35-year-old is reported to be earning a staggering £40k-per-week at Elland Road, the argument that Orta simply must cut the Spaniard loose this summer is an easy one to make.

Indeed, the shot-stopper’s career in England appeared all but over back in March of 2020, when the £720k-rated man was found guilty of racially abusing Jonathan Leko, and was subsequently handed an eight-game ban by the FA.

Following this incident, the ‘keeper made just six first-team appearances for the Whites over the remainder of the club’s 2019/20 campaign as well as 2020/21, before Orta shipped the shot-stopper out to Elche last summer.

As such, considering his advancing years, Illan Meslier’s now undisputed role as Jesse Marsch’s first-choice goalkeeper and Casilla’s extremely hefty weekly wage, it is clear for all to see that the Leeds sporting director must finally axe the player Oscar Mario dubbed a “mistake” and “nothing short of a liability” this summer.

Not enough home advantage? No problem for India

In recent times, Indian pitches have offered less home advantage than most pitches in the world. Yet, Kohli’s men have found a way to dominate by outlasting the opposition

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Ranchi16-Oct-2019Since the start of 2016, India’s spinners have collectively averaged 25.32 in Test matches at home. Visiting spinners in India, in the same period, have taken their wickets at 51.18, or more than twice the cost.

For spinners, India is simultaneously the best place and the worst place in the world to bowl in.

Test matches in Australia and South Africa have produced similar disparities between the averages of home and away spinners, but fast bowlers do the bulk of the bowling in those two countries, where even the host teams’ spinners average in the 30s.This disparity isn’t seen to the same extent in the rest of Asia. Host spinners have outbowled visiting spinners in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the UAE, but the difference in averages is far less glaring.Visiting spinners are thrust into the harshest possible spotlight when they come to India. They have to bowl more overs than they do anywhere else, in often oppressive weather, against a batting line-up that pounces on the slightest error, and in conditions that don’t necessarily offer spinners too much help.Hang on, I hear you say. Indian pitches, not that much help for the spinners?Yes, and not just that. Indian pitches, over the last three or so years, have offered less home advantage than most pitches in the world.ALSO READ – Managing Markram: South Africa must act quickly to arrest opener’s slideLet’s go back to November 2015, when India played their first home series under Virat Kohli, against South Africa. The pitches for that series were infamously loaded in the spinners’ favour, and it seemed then that this would become the template for home Tests under Kohli. It hasn’t panned out that way. Aside from the Pune Test against Australia in 2017 – India’s only home defeat since December 2012 – there hasn’t been a square turner since that 2015 series. And while some tracks have offered a little more turn or inconsistent bounce than others, most have fallen well within the spectrum of traditional Indian pitches. They start out flat, produce large first-innings totals, and deteriorate over the fourth and fifth days. The numbers bear this out. Since the start of 2016, away teams have scored 31.29 runs per wicket in the first innings in India. They’ve done better only in Sri Lanka and Australia. India’s bowlers have had to work harder for their wickets than a lot of home attacks.

Tests in India, in fact, have bucked a worldwide trend for spectacular collapses. Teams have been bowled out for less than 100 on 16 occasions since the start of 2016, but not once in India. Teams have been bowled out for less than 150 only six times in India, out of 77 instances globally . And it’s only happened twice in the first innings: India’s 105 in that Pune Test against Australia, and Afghanistan’s 109 in their inaugural Test in Bengaluru.Apart from that Afghanistan Test, India have bowled a visiting team out for less than 200 in the first innings only once in this period – West Indies in Rajkot last year. At the other end of that table, there have been seven 350-plus first-innings totals. In conditions like this, the first innings becomes a struggle to stay in the contest, and this is where India have excelled. They haven’t lost any of the seven Tests in which their opponents have passed 350 in the first innings, and have won four of them, including Tests in which England batted first and posted 400 and 477.India can and do overpower their opponents at home, but more often they simply outlast them. And they have to. Tests in India last longer than they do anywhere apart from the UAE. Since the start of 2016, the average Test match in India has lasted 341 overs, and a Test match in South Africa 275 overs. The difference, 66 overs, is just over two-thirds of a full day’s play.

After their 3-0 defeat on extreme turners on that 2015-16 tour of India, South Africa began loading their home conditions in their bowling attack’s favour. India, having given South Africa that idea in the first place, have given up on it themselves.Four years on, they’ve welcomed South Africa with pitches offering only the barest-minimum advantage to the home attack, and they’ve won an even more impressive series victory. They have simply been better for longer.
