Afghanistan spinner Zahir Khan joins Lancashire

Lancashire have signed Afghanistan left-arm wristspinner Zahir Khan for the remainder of the season.Zahir, 19, has an impressive record with both red and white ball, having taken 34 first-class wickets at 13.14, alongside 19 at 22.42 in List A and 15 at 13.53 in T20 cricket. He is yet to make his international debut although he was part of Afghanistan’s squad for their inaugural Test against India and played at last year’s Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. I can’t wait to get started now.”I have heard a lot of good things about Lancashire and Old Trafford from Jos Buttler when I played with him at the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and I hope to make a significant contribution during my stay here.”Zahir’s signing continues Lancashire’s bolstering of their spin resources after they also brought in Scotland’s left-arm spinner Mark Watt.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Catalan giants have struggled with their finances in the last few years and are around €200 million ($217m) over their La Liga-imposed annual spending, according to . Now, Pique has urged his former club to disclose their correct financial condition to the fans and be "honest and transparent".

  • WHAT GERARD PIQUE SAID

Speaking on Ibai Lalnos' Twitch channel, the former Spain international said it is unrealistic for Barca to target success in the Champions League given their current situation off the pitch. "The fans want honesty and transparency," he said. "If the reality is tough, then say it. What you cannot do is sell smoke and mirrors and say we're going to win the Champions League if you then don't have the money to compete. I don't know the club's situation at the moment – from what I can gather it doesn't seem that good – but what the socios [members] value is being told the truth to their faces."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Blaugrana legend further suggested that the Catalan side should put faith in their famed youth academy, La Masia, for the next couple of years instead of spending heavily to sign big-name players and run up greater debts.

He added: "If you say, 'Look, we don't even have a penny to spend, so for the next two or three years we will turn to La Masia. The message should be that we have confidence in the academy; that there are good players with a lot of talent. Bring them through and try and compete for La Liga. What you cannot do is say 'I am going to sign [Erling] Haaland,' which looks great, but how do you do it? I'm just using Haaland as an example, it has nothing to do with rumours. I could equally say [Kylian] Mbappé or whoever."

Middlesex miss out on full hand of batting points

The bad weather which has plagued Middlesex’s home fixtures so far this season returned with a vengeance

County round-up: Clarke century rattles champions Essex

ScorecardThe bad weather which has plagued Middlesex’s home fixtures so far this season returned with a vengeance on day two against Gloucestershire at Lord’s.Only 26 overs were possible before rain arrived 10 minutes before the scheduled lunch interval and prevented any further play with Middlesex on 455 for 8.The morning session did produce drama, however, notably when the hosts missed out on a fifth batting point after failing to score the four runs required from the last 15 balls of the 110 overs allocated for bonus points. The near miss means the Lord’s tenants are now destined to go more than a year without collecting maximum batting points in the red-ball format.Such a scenario appeared unlikely for much of the first hour as overnight batsmen John Simpson and James Harris accumulated runs with few alarms. However, with the promised land of 400 in sight, they inexplicably spluttered to a halt.Harris was first to perish. Aiming a shot to leg off Craig Miles, the former Glamorgan quick instead got a leading edge and ballooned a catch to Daniel Worrall at mid-off.Angus Fraser’s side were still strongly placed, but following a tight over from Ryan Higgins, Simpson ratcheted up the tension another notch when he nicked a wide ball from Miles into the gloves of wicketkeeper GarethRoderick.New batsman Tom Helm’s efforts to score the three runs needed from the final five balls foundered and despite a scrambled single off the last delivery they came up two runs short.Relieved of the pressure of acquiring bonus points, Helm and Ollie Rayner found the freedom and fluency which had previously eluded them to share an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 58.Rayner was especially forceful, pulling a short ball from spinner Graeme van Buuren into the lower tier of the grandstand, before driving the next ball for four.Helm joined in by clubbing two fours off what proved to be the final over of the day.

Man United send scouts to watch "extremely unique" star for the future

Manchester United's summer transfer business was heavily focused on the present, with the likes of Andre Onana and Mason Mount arriving to bolster Erik ten Hag's options right in their primes.

Things haven't quite gone to plan for the Premier League giants so far this season, however, with three losses in their opening five games representing a disastrous start.

Those at Old Trafford could be set for a positive boost yet, though, with the Red Devils keeping a keen eye on future talent, perhaps in an attempt to avoid any significant collapses such as the one they are currently experiencing.

With that said, according to reports, Manchester United recently sent scouts to watch one particular star for the future, amid their interest in securing his signature.

What's the latest Manchester United transfer news?

Even when the transfer window is shut, a club of Manchester United's calibre does not stop seeking reinforcements, particularly when in poor form. During the summer, they spent a reported €207m (£178m) on welcoming a total of seven fresh faces, hoping to mount a potential title challenge.

Their 3-1 loss against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford shows that they are anything but ready to join the title race, with injuries, off-field issues and poor form bundling the pressure on Ten Hag to turn things around.

The Red Devils could at least give their fans some good news in January, however, with reports suggesting that they're interested in Red Bull Salzburg youngster Oscar Gloukh.

According to The Sun, via Football365, United sent scouts to watch Gloukh's performance for Israel against Romania, in a game that saw the teenager score a crucial goal for his country aiming for Euro 2024 qualification.

Any deal for the Salzburg man may prove to be difficult, given that he only made the move from Maccabi Tel Aviv to the Austrian club in January. The Premier League giants are also not the only club interested in Goukh, with Liverpool and Arsenal also interested in the 19-year-old.

Who is Oscar Gloukh?

Oscar Gloukh in action for Israel.

A midfielder by trade, Gloukh has impressed for Red Bull Salzburg since making the January switch, with eight goal involvements in just 25 appearances. He'll only get better at the Austrian club, too, who have developed talents such as Erling Haaland and Dominik Szoboszlai in recent years. If Gloukh reaches anything near the level of those two, then United, should they pursue a move, could have themselves a game-changer.

Praising the youngster, Football Talent Scout wrote: "As for his role, Oscar is a pure playmaker that’s distinguished with qualities to operate either an “8”, a “10” or a winger.

"At 170cm tall, he has a low center of gravity, which contributes to his balance and changes of direction, is technically gifted, and is quite agile. In contrast to the rest of the Israeli talents, he has an extremely unique and complete profile, which seems to fit top-flight football."

With that said, whilst they'll face a fight for his signature, if United can secure the signature of Gloukh in January or next summer then it could go down as one of their best deals in recent years.

Was it worth the millions?

From 2020, Test cricket in England is back on the traditional six venues while the eight largest grounds will host the new T20 tournament. Has the last 20 years seen money well spent?

George Dobell16-Feb-2018

A view across the Ageas Bowl•Getty Images

Was all the effort worth it?Were the years of jostling, the vast debts incurred and the public money diverted worth the effort?Because, here we are, every bit of 20-years into an arms race that rendered almost half the competition (Hampshire, Durham, Yorkshire and Glamorgan) all but insolvent and we appear to be back where we started. With the six traditional venues hosting every Test in the most recent major match allocation. It wouldn’t be accurate to say all that money – and we are talking about hundreds of millions of pounds here – was wasted. If nothing else, the competition to host Test cricket forced clubs that had been complacent to improve their facilities and stop taking the spectator for granted. Remember the leaking roof at Edgbaston or the rotting seats at Old Trafford? Remember the days when a bit of rain in the North London morning would wash out play in the afternoon at Lord’s?They’re gone and they’re not missed. Improved facilities throughout England and Wales should provide a better experience for spectators and, in terms of the indoor schools and outdoor training areas, aid the development of future generations of players. It would be wrong to see such matters purely through the prism of Test cricket, too. The fact is several grounds – notably Cardiff – were more keen to host white-ball cricket in the belief that the new T20 competition, in particular, offers the best opportunity for growth and revenue. The fact that they have a vastly improved facility – as do Bristol and Taunton – can only be an asset. The competition remains, too. Hampshire haven’t given up the hope of hosting further Tests and, should one of the traditional six stumble or fall, they will be there to pick up the pieces. Durham, Glamorgan et al. aren’t saying ‘never’ either. But whether all that money has been put to the best possible use is another question entirely. Might those millions instead have helped develop a cricket stadium with a roof? Or might the game in England and Wales have been stronger had much of that money been forsaken to ensure the game retained the oxygen of publicity that could have been provided by free to air broadcast coverage? Even millionaires suffocate without oxygen.Remarkably, however, the latest allocation did something almost unprecedented: it left almost all the counties just about satisfied. Sure, one or two were more satisfied than others and the sense remains that Durham have been treated disproportionally harshly in recent times. But, by spreading the allocations and allowing the clubs to plan well in advance (they now have a fair degree of certainty which games they are hosting until the end of 2024), the ECB have handled a tricky situation adeptly. It was noticeable however, that, in the ECB’s press release announcing the allocations, it was mentioned that Colin Graves, the ECB chairman, “chose to be excused from the room” during the board meeting to verify the Host Venue panel’s recommendations in recognition of his on-going relationship with Yorkshire.Graves, it might be remembered, rescued Yorkshire from insolvency with loans in excess of £20m. And, bearing in mind the club’s outstanding record of providing players for the England teams, it is an intervention for which cricket-lovers far beyond Yorkshire’s boundaries should be grateful. But that intervention left the club with vast debts to service. And while Graves has jumped through every hoop to satisfy legal requirements as regards his independence – he no longer benefits from those Trusts which are, instead, in the names of family members – the fact is those debts cannot be serviced unless Yorkshire are guaranteed a significant income from a strong allocation of major matches. As a result, there might be a perception from some – a perception that Graves seems to understand in light of his decision to leave the room – that he remains somewhat partial regarding Yorkshire matters. It might be noted that the trustees of the Graves Family Trusts retain a veto over who can join, or be removed from, the Yorkshire board. So his decision to leave the room raises a few questions.Did Graves excuse himself from the room when the decision was made to take Test status from Durham? Because Yorkshire indirectly benefited from that decision as it effectively reduced the competition to host Test cricket in the north of England.Did Graves excuse himself from the room when the decision was made to reject the ECB’s own working party’s recommendation to reorganise domestic T20 cricket on the basis of promotion and relegation? Because Yorkshire, with a disproportionate reliance upon the value of their local derby match against Lancashire, had more at stake than most as a result of that discussion. And did he excuse himself from the room during all the meetings that decided the new T20 competition was to involve eight teams based at the largest eight venues? Because the decision to include Yorkshire – who have failed to exploit the growth of T20 as well as several domestic rivals – guarantees them an income and power that might, once again, reasonably be argued to help them meet their financial commitments.Because if he didn’t leave the rooms on those occasions, why did he this time? And if it was appropriate to leave this time, why wasn’t it before? Just a week ago, Lord Patel of Bradford – an independent board member – told ESPNcricinfo he didn’t know anything about such Trusts.Few seriously believe that Graves’ involvement in cricket is anything other than benevolent. He could have used his time and his money to far greater personal benefit elsewhere and it is telling that Rod Bransgrove, even in the midst of his personal disappointment at missing out on the right for his Hampshire ground to host an Ashes Test in 2023, remained steadfastly supportive of the integrity of Graves and the process by which the allocations were made. But strong governance doesn’t leave such matters to chance or to the conscience of individuals; it has systems in place to deal with such possibilities. And the uncomfortable suspicion could remain that, while so many decisions pertaining to the future of English cricket appear to benefit Yorkshire, the ECB has left themselves open to accusations of, if not conflicts of interest, at least the perception of possible conflicts of interest.

Liverpool: Klopp Eyes "Outstanding" £329k-p/w Mo Salah Heir At Anfield

It has been a damaging summer for Liverpool. The unexpected losses of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to highly lucrative contracts in Saudi Arabia have forced a rush in the midfield overhaul.

This league also tried to convince the indomitable Mohammed Salah to ditch Anfield.

However, on his YouTube channel, reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that the Merseysiders consider the Egyptian ‘untouchable.’

This has been reiterated by Salah’s agent, who said the player is fully 'committed' to Liverpool and will not leave this summer.

Nevertheless, the winger is now 31-years-old, and it remains to be seen what will happen beyond this season.

Eventually, Jurgen Klopp will need to find a replacement, and he is reportedly already eyeing his options…

What’s the latest Liverpool transfer news?

According to Football Transfers, Liverpool are lining up a move for Leroy Sané as a contingency plan for Salah’s future departure.

How good is Leroy Sané?

The German enjoyed a magical four-year spell in England with Manchester City between 2016 and 2020. Sane arrived in the same summer as Pep Guardiola, and under the Spaniard’s tutelage, he flourished into one of the world’s most scintillating and effervescent talents.

Across 135 appearances in all competitions, the 27-year-old registered 85 goal contributions, notably winning two Premier League titles and an FA Cup.

Sane’s most dangerous and productive campaign in the north-west occurred in 2017/18 when he scored ten times and crafted 15 assists, before being named the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Guardiola previously hailed the £329k-per-week livewire as a “great player with incredible quality.”

The 53-time international joined Bayern Munich in 2020 and chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge described him as “outstanding.”

Leroy Sane

Although he has failed to hit the dazzling heights he achieved in his trophy-laden Man City stint, the mesmerising forward still ranks in the best 7% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for non-penalty goals and successful take-ons per 90.

His time in Bavaria could take a more promising turn thanks to a fruitful partnership with Harry Kane.

Within ten minutes of the Englishman’s debut against Werder Bremen, he assisted Sane for the opening goal.

Crucially for Klopp, Sane possesses a substantial degree of Premier League experience in a title-winning side and whilst it is almost impossible to replicate Salah’s ridiculous numbers, Sane is a viable option for the Merseysiders.

Across 307 matches, Salah has netted on 187 occasions and created 80 assists – his phenomenal consistency, numbers, and skill means he is one of the most inevitable and elite forces to grace the English top flight.

Meanwhile, his goal in the recent victory over AFC Bournemouth meant he became the third-highest scorer in the club’s history.

Klopp has heaped praise upon the joyous technician and said:

“He is an outstanding signing, but for sure the way he developed, the way he treats himself, the game preparation, the training preparation, training attitude and all these kind of things, that’s exceptional.”

But when Klopp and Liverpool hierarchy sit down and assess how they will replace the indefatigable Salah, then Sane is undoubtedly a sensible, worthy, and wonderfully capable avenue at Anfield.

Newcastle Express Interest In £40m Premier League Defender

Newcastle United reportedly hold an interest in a £40m-rated Premier League defender, but his asking price may prove a stumbling block in a potential deal, according to Ben Jacobs.

Who are Newcastle signing?

It has been a busy window for the Magpies so far as Eddie Howe looks to consolidate his side's place as one of the Premier League's elite clubs, while also preparing for a return to the Champions League next season.

Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes Tino Livramento and Yankuba Minteh have all arrived at St. James' Park, although the latter has been sent straight out on loan, as Howe readies his squad for a hectic campaign.

The Magpies finished fourth in the Premier League last season and greatly exceeded expectations, but if one criticism could be levelled at them, it could perhaps be a lack of squad depth. The same core group of 15 or so players were readily used, but Newcastle will need to rotate more next season due to their European commitments.

Read the latest Newcastle transfer news HERE…

An area which is yet to be reinforced on Tyneside is centre-back, with there being an expectation that a new central defender may arrive this summer.

Many names have been linked, but it now appears Crystal Palace's Joachim Andersen has emerged as a potential target for Howe, according to journalist Jacobs. Having been touted at upwards of £40m though, Newcastle may be forced to look elsewhere for better value.

Speaking on Loaded Mag NUFC's YouTube channel, Jacobs stated: "Newcastle are quite lucky, I think, in the centre-back position, they've got enough there, especially when you consider they only play a back four.

"So, it's not necessarily my understanding that centre-back is the top of Newcastle's priorities to be perfectly honest with you, even though we have seen some reports to the contrary. But those names that you've mentioned have got a little bit of substance to them.

"I think with Joachim Andersen the price is too high at this stage, and you can understand why again for the point that I've already made a few minutes ago that a lot of centre-backs have been on the move, and many of them have been £30m, £35m, £40m. So, if you take that then you immediately know that every other selling club is going to be using that as a yardstick."

He added: "I know that the Andersen links have some genuine substance to them, but simply not at that price."

Andersen, who was labelled by Micah Richards as "brilliant" (via Football.London) last season, has been a regular starter for Crystal Palace since arriving at the club in 2021, having previously enjoyed a loan spell with Fulham in the Premier League.

At 27-years-old, Andersen is very much a player for the present, and would compete with the likes of Sven Botman, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles for a position in the Newcastle side should he join.

However, Palace may be unwilling to lower that asking price given how inflated the current market is, meaning a transfer may be difficult to make happen.

How much does Andersen earn?

Currently earning £75,000-a-week at Selhurst Park, Newcastle would likely be able to offer the 22-cap Denmark international a pay rise, perhaps helping sell a move to Andersen this summer.

Andersen featured 33 times for the Eagles last season, keeping eight clean sheets and scoring once. Having arrived at Palace for approximately £15m, they set to make a handsome profit should he depart this transfer window.

One of Andersen's key strengths is his ability, especially over longer distances. He ranked in the top one percent of Premier League centre-backs for completed long passes last season, also sitting in the top 12% for progressive passing distance.

He also sat in the top four percent for clearances, the top ten percent for aerial duel win percentage and did not make a single error that directly led to an opposition shot last term.

Karnataka, Delhi eye bonus-point wins

Karnataka were in line for a bonus-point win over Assam as K Gowtham triggered another second-innings meltdown courtesy three wickets to take his match tally to seven, in addition to a maiden first-class century. Assam, made to follow-on, were tottering at 169 for 6, still needing 155 to avoid an innings defeat in Mysore.Gowtham was complemented by fast bowler Abhimanyu Mithun, who picked up two wickets. The only semblance of resistance from Assam came courtesy a 56-run fourth-wicket stand between Gokul Sharma and Sibsankar Roy, who made 44. Gokul, the captain, was unbeaten on 62.Delhi, denied victory courtesy bad light in their season opener, were in closing distance of seven straight points at the Karnail Singh Stadium in New Delhi. Following on, Railways, were reduced to 157 for 6, requiring another 154 to avoid an innings defeat. Pulkit Narang, Vikas Mishra and Manan Sharma picked up two wickets each, while Ishant Sharma, the Delhi captain, sent down 10 overs for 19 runs and no wickets. Nitin Bhille, the top-scorer for Railways in the match, remained unbeaten on 54 at the close of play on the third day.Hyderabad’s frustration continued as they couldn’t step out onto the field for a seventh consecutive day this season. Their second game, at Gymkhana Grounds in Hyderabad, is set to face similar fate as the first one: abandoned without a ball bowled. Torrential rain in Hyderabad had earlier rendered the outfield at Rajiv Gandhi International stadium unsuitable for the T20I between India and Australia last week. Uttar Pradesh, their opponents, are also in desperate need for game time, particularly after a loss to Railways in their tournament opener.
