Perry, Gardner, Haynes brush aside West Indies to keep Australia unbeaten

Rachael Haynes made a fist of Australia’s 132 chase with an unbeaten 83 after Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner’s three-fors helped bowl West Indies out cheaply in 45.5 overs at the Basin Reserve. Stafanie Taylor’s 91-ball 50 and Hayley Matthews’ three splendid catches were the only contributions of note against an undefeated Australia, who romped to a seven-wicket victory with nearly 20 overs to spare. After a 30-minute rain-induced toss delay, it was the new-ball tandem of Perry and Megan Schutt that set the tone for Australia’s fourth successive win in this World Cup. Perry kicked off the domination under overcast conditions with a double-wicket second over.Rachel Haynes’ unbeaten knock saw Australia cruise to victory•ICC via Getty Images

First up, she had the seaming ball ram into the top of Matthews’ off stump and then drew the left-hand batter Kycia Knight into edging the next ball to wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy. Taylor moved herself up to face the hat-trick delivery, an attempted yorker that ended up as a full toss easy enough for Taylor to flick for three runs.A seemingly innocuous full toss nearly caused the undoing of the other opener, Deandra Dottin, on 8. Given lbw off a Schutt delivery in the fifth over, Dottin, whose availability for this fixture had been under the cloud due to back issues in the last game, reviewed the decision. Replays showed an underedge as the ball floated past the bat on the way to plonking Dottin’s back pad.West Indies had a second lbw decision overturned soon after – Taylor’s off Perry – though the allrounder wouldn’t be too far from a third wicket. An agile two-handed catch by Meg Lanning at first slip proved too good for Dottin’s flying outside edge and handed Perry her three-wicket haul. As a result, West Indies slumped to 34 for 3 in the powerplay, their lowest tally in the passage so far in the tournament.Taylor had another close shave in the sixth over of Perry’s probing eight-over spell when an incoming seaming delivery jagged back, clipped the top of her pad and missed the stumps by a whisker. Second-change Alana King, the only legspinner in Australia’s XI, delivered an incisive run-less second over during which Shemaine Campbelle survived a review by Australia for lbw. Replays vindicated the umpire’s decision of the ball hitting the bat before thudding onto the front pad, though Lanning appeared displeased why neither UltraEdge nor ball-tracking was used for the review, even remonstrating with on-field umpire Alex Wharf.Ashleigh Gardner’s three-for hurt West Indies’ middle order•ICC via Getty Images

Tied up by the accuracy of King and third-change Gardner’s offspin, Campbelle’s inability to rotate the strike sent her back not long after. She eventually fell to Gardner, flicking one to Beth Mooney at midwicket for a 51-ball 20. Gardner took her second wicket with a ripper of an offbreak that fizzed past Chedean Nation’s outside edge to round out the double-wicket 23rd over that saw West Indies plummet to 70 for 5.West Indies’ rapid unravelling extended into the loss of their sixth wicket when a bid for a third run led to Healy running out Chinelle Henry at the wicketkeeper’s end. Taylor tried to mend the innings, but parched of strike for extended periods, she could do as best as taking West Indies past the three-digit mark. In the 41st over, Gardner trapped her lbw before left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen, who replaced wristspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington in the XI, struck twice to clean up the tail.West Indies held their own in their defense against the vaunted Australian line-up. Matthews had a forgettable day with the bat, but she thrust herself in the thick of things from the get-go of the chase. First, she gobbled up a superb reflex catch off her own bowling as Healy smacked a full ball straight down at rocket speed. In the next over, she plucked Lanning’s edge at first slip off Shamilia Connell to consign the Australian No. 3 to her eighth duck in ODIs.DRS handed Haynes a lifeline when she was adjudged lbw on 16. Ball-tracking showed Connell’s delivery was going over middle and off. Early in her thirties, Haynes treaded danger territory when her edge off Ramharack, who replaced fellow offspinner Anisa Mohammed in the XI, fell marginally short of first slip Matthews. Then, a throw from Henry almost found Haynes short of her ground during an ill-attempted single in the eventful 16th over. Haynes’ fifty stand off 78 balls with Perry promised to draw the inevitable closer but Henry combined with first slip Matthews to dismiss Perry for a 31-ball 10.Mooney and Haynes then stepped on the gas. They took 10 off the 21st before Haynes brought up her 17th ODI fifty to add to her 2022 World Cup tally of 134, 34, and 30. Mooney stitched a fifty partnership for the fourth wicket with Haynes, who also hit the winning run.

Americans Abroad: AC Milan fall and Christian Pulisic speculation rises, while Tim Weah, Josh Sargent and Brenden Aaronson all look to extend individual fortunes

GOAL looks at the biggest storylines among Americans Abroad, including Pulisic looking to rebound and Sargent's scoring streak

After such a bright start to the season, things have taken a turn for Americans in Europe – and not for the better. Christian Pulisic has dealt with injuries, and is in and out of form while also in Serie A, Tim Weah and Weston McKennie are performing, but Juventus are playing well below their potential – and were summarily beaten in the Champions League.

Ricardo Pepi is done for the season after picking up a knee injury. Malik Tillman, too, is unlikely to return before May. There are two ways of looking at this. The first is to dive into pessimism and snobbery. Checkmate, Americans, the Europeans were right. The second is the more sensible and, frankly, factual.

It has, in reality, been a good season for Americans abroad. The players around them at some of the European clubs simply haven't been up to it. But look a little deeper, further down the tables and out of Serie A, and there remain reasons for excitement.

Josh Sargent has found form since returning from a muscle injury for Norwich. Brenden Aaronson has chugged along for Leeds. He will be crucial if his side are to grab three points against Sheffield in a top of the table clash on Monday.

The Celtic duo of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty performed admirably in Europe. Piece it all together, and there's still a lot to play for here, with plenty of storylines to keep an eye on – especially with an international window less than a month away.

GOAL looks ahead at some of the biggest storylines to follow among Americans Abroad this weekend.

Milan fall, Christian Pulisic speculation rises

If you believed some reports coming out of Italy this week, Pulisic wants out of AC Milan. Pulisic was underwhelming in both legs of Milan's Champions League knockout phase tie with Feyenoord. He was subbed early in both, and the speculation began. But no sooner had the nothing reports gone out, Pulisic released a statement reaffirming his happiness at San Siro.

And although he has lost some of his early season consistency, the American remains the most important player to this side. An optimist might say, in fact, that the Joao Felix signing this winter made sense – if only to take some of the load off Pulisic, who has picked up a couple of injuries in recent months. Either way, he's still the go-to guy for this team. And in an exclusive interview with GOAL, he confirmed that he's enjoying his run at Milan, even as he's at times had to play the roles of both hero and villain.

AC Milan manager Sergio Conceicao also denounced rumors of a rift with Pulisic, saying Friday that the USMNT star is not ready for 90 minutes due to a muscle issue.

“I keep reading lies and lies in the press," Conceicao said. "I don’t like this. I am in front of you every three or four days. If you have any doubts I'll tell you, I am upfront. Lies hurt, players today are active in social media."

But all-round play notwithstanding, Milan are still struggling. Champions League football simply has to be the goal every year. And with 14 games to play, they are five points back of fourth place. That's not an unassailable gap by any means, but it's hard to back such a maddeningly inconsistent side to go on the kind of run required to close it.

Torino, on Saturday, is the kind of annoying away game Milan has to win to find that form. A midtable side who aren't particularly good in either box, but play the kind of frustrating back five to give Pulisic and Milan nightmares, it will not be an easy game. In theory, this has 0-0 written all over it. In practice, things simply have to be different.

    Tim Weah, match winner?

On Wednesday Tim Weah absolutely battered the ball into the net from outside the box to drag Juventus back into a Champions League knockout tie with PSV. And it still wasn't enough. In fairness, Juve were battered on the day.

Weah's goal – lovely as it was – came rather against the run of play. PSV, depleted by injury and missing Ricardo Pepi, simply out-attacked them – 25 shots, 10 on target, way more possession, 3-1. In effect, only Weah came out of this whole thing looking good.

And so the same story repeats for the Serie A side. Juve have been better than Milan this year – if only because they have a deeper squad to play with. They, too, expected to be among the title contenders. Instead, they have to settle for turgid football and a borderline Champions League spot. And like their perennial Serie A competitors, it is the Americans that have stood out.

Weah and Weston McKennie have been asked to play a bit of everywhere. And while McKennie has been a standout since day one, Weah has come into his own of late. Injuries and perhaps a lack of trust from new manager Thiago Motta kept him out of the picture early on. But Weah has forced himself in.

Against PSV, he was magnificent at right-back. At times, he has also played as a winger – or even a No. 9. For a Juve side that lacks a bit of magic, Weah is a rare match winner. He might have to provide again in what will certainly be a frustrating evening for Juve at Sardegna Arena against Cagliari. Juve can't zip the ball around. Cagliari don't really want to have it. Could a game, on paper, be more boring? Weah will have to step up.

Josh Sargent, the answer for the USMNT?

Five games, five goals, and good vibes – such has been the narrative of Josh Sargent in recent weeks. Mauricio Pochettino has a striker problem. And Sargent is doing his best to minimize it. Sargent is a confusing player. He's not really outstanding at anything, but he's sort of good at a lot of little things.

The result is a footballer who is solid but never really spectacular. Need 10-15 goals with an occasional hot streak thrown in to get your hopes up a little bit? Look no further. And Sargent is on one of those little runs at the moment.

Frankly, it could not have come at a better time for the USMNT. Ricardo Pepi is done for the season. Folarin Balogun hasn't been seen in months after recovering from shoulder surgery. Daryl Dike is back, but probably too far off. Everyone else is a level below what's required. An in-form Sargent is exactly what the Argentine needs with the CONCACAF Nations League finals less than a month away.

The stats make for good reading – 19 games, nine goals, five assists. But it hasn't had a massive impact on his team. Norwich are a tepid 12th. They are only four points back of a playoff spot, but such is the quality between the Championshp and Premier League that they might not even to close it.

Either way, though, it can't hurt Sargent himself if he continues to bang them in – 19th-placed Stoke might be a fine feasting ground this weekend.

    Celtic boys and glorious defeat

A word, briefly, for Celtic. The Scottish side were immense against Bayern Munich in the Champions League midweek. Brendan Rodgers coaxed a nerarly-perfect performance out of his side. Outmatched financially and in terms of quality, the SPL leaders did everything right. At the end of the day, it was an unfortunate bounce – Cameron Carter-Vickers slide-tackling the ball into Alphonso Davies, who deflected it into the net – that saw them eliminated from the Champions League.

The American duo of Auston Trusty and Carter-Vickers were immense on the night. They limited a humming Bayern attack, shut down Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala. There was nothing more they could have done. It is, at least, something to build on as they attack the rest of the season. Hibs should be fairly easy work Saturday morning. The title might be a stroll from there.

ICC appoints Geoff Allardice full-time CEO

He had served as the acting CEO for the last eight months, following the ICC’s issues with Manu Sawhney

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Nov-2021Geoff Allardice has been named the full-time CEO of the ICC after serving in the role on an interim basis for more than eight months. Allardice had taken over the role from Manu Sawhney in March, when the latter was suspended based on the findings of a cultural review.Allardice, a former first-class cricketer from Australia who has a degree in chemical engineering, earlier served as ICC general manager (cricket) for eight years. He did not play international cricket but was a prolific, dogged batter for Melbourne University in club cricket and played 18 matches for Victoria in the early 1990s. Former CA CEO James Sutherland was Allardice’s long-time Melbourne University team-mate. Eventually, Sutherland brought Allardice into the CA set-up as umpires’ manager in the early 2000s. From there, he went up the ladder to become CA’s cricket operations general manager, before moving on to the ICC in July 2012.”My continued focus will be on doing the right thing for our sport and working closely with Members to deliver long-term success and sustainability,” Allardice said. “I would also like to thank the ICC staff for their commitment and support over the last eight months and I’m looking forward to continuing to serve cricket with such a talented team.”Sawhney was first asked to go on leave by the ICC in March following issues that emerged over his management style after a cultural review, which was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). He was then officially let go from his role in July, following a decision taken by the ICC board.ICC chairman Greg Barclay said: “I am delighted that Geoff has agreed to take the role of ICC CEO on a permanent basis. He has shown tremendous leadership during an extremely challenging period culminating in the successful delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.”Geoff has unrivaled knowledge of the global cricket landscape and its stakeholders and has consistently demonstrated he is the right person to work in partnership with our Members to shape the sport for the next decade as we embark on delivering a new strategy and our next commercial rights cycle.”

Emery’s signing has now cost Arsenal over £46m and needs to be sold

Arsenal’s recruitment under boss Mikel Arteta has been exemplary in recent times, with the club signing players who have made a huge impact on the first-team squad.

As demonstrated already this season, Riccardo Calafiori is the latest in a long list of additions who have impressed at the Emirates, nailing down the starting left-back role and producing some memorable moments – including his wonder strike against Manchester City.

Jurrien Timber is a player who has been plagued with injuries since his transfer to North London, but this season he’s been able to finally showcase his quality in the Premier League.

The Dutchman has started seven games in a row for the Gunners, even forcing Ben White out of the squad in recent weeks – a sign of how impressive he has been since his move from Ajax last summer.

The aforementioned pair are just two examples of the club’s excellent work behind the scenes, with multiple other players proving to be money well spent so far this season.

Arsenal's key performers this season

Brazilian centre-back Gabriel has continued where he left off last season for Arsenal, starting defensively whilst also making a huge impact in the opposition’s penalty area.

He’s been part of a backline that has already kept five clean sheets this season, helping the Gunners get off to an excellent start in the Premier League alongside the Champions League.

The 26-year-old has already scored twice this season, with both his efforts coming in crucial meetings with rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

As for Leandro Trossard, he’s enjoyed some successful moments this campaign, but also one to forget, receiving two yellow cards and subsequently being sent off against Pep Guardiola’s side – with his second caution coming after kicking the ball away just weeks after Declan Rice committed the same offence.

However, the Belgian has registered two goals and an assist in all competitions so far this season, providing a reliable option at the top end of the pitch for Arteta’s side.

Leandro Trossard

Both players will be integral to the Gunners’ attempts to secure a first league title in over 20 years this season, but they both currently earn less than one player who hasn’t featured for the club in nearly two years after arriving under Unai Emery.

Kieran Tierney's total cost to Arsenal

Left-back Kieran Tierney arrived in North London with high expectations after his £25m transfer from Scottish side Celtic back in the summer of 2019, but unfortunately for both parties, the move hasn’t gone as they would’ve anticipated.

The 27-year-old – who Ashley Cole dubbed a “warrior” – was a consistent first-team performer upon his move in 2019/20, but since has seen his game time decrease with injuries plaguing the defender in recent times.

Arsenal'sKieranTierneyreacts

Up until August 2023, Tierney had made 124 appearances for Arteta’s side, but in a bid to regain his fitness, he was sent on loan to Spanish side Real Sociedad last season, featuring 20 times in LaLiga.

He’s yet to feature upon his return to the Emirates, with yet another injury preventing him from making any appearances, with the defender still pocketing a hefty wage in the process.

The former Celtic star is on a reported £110k-per-week in North London – a figure that is higher than both Gabriel and Trossard, who currently earn £100k and £90k-per-week respectively.

When combining Tierney’s total earnings from his time at Arsenal with his £25m transfer fee, he’s cost the club around £46m, which works out at around £370k per appearance since his move five years ago.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.

Given his current injury record and lack of impact, Arteta must look to offload the defender at the next available opportunity with his funds massively burning a hole in the club’s wage bill.

The funds generated could be used to hand his side with the best possible chance of finally ending their two decade wait for a Premier League triumph.

"Brilliant" Liverpool ace set to miss next 7 games in injury blow for Slot

In Arne Slot's first real injury blow at the start of his Liverpool tenure, he must now find a way to put his squad together without one particular player who suffered a fractured ankle on international duty.

Liverpool injury news

The first international break of the season represents both the first checkpoint of the campaign and often the marker for where things could start to go wrong for several sides. All of a sudden, any unbeaten runs could come crashing down, promising starts could come to a crashing halt and injuries may begin to pile up to leave managers once again ruing international football.

He’s a Premier League icon…

For Slot and Liverpool, they will hope that's far from the case. The Reds have got off to the perfect start under the Dutchman, winning three from three with three clean sheets to match. They passed their first real test with flying colours too, having dismantled Manchester United at Old Trafford in what has become a far too familiar sight for all involved at the Red Devils.

The international break has offered up a fresh challenge, however, with one injury blow already emerging. According to Paul Joyce, as relayed by Fabrizio Romano, Harvey Elliott is set to be out until after the October break after fracturing his foot whilst training with the England U21s.

The injury setback comes at a frustrating time for Elliott, who has played just seven minutes of Premier League action so far this season. With Champions League and Carabao Cup football coming up, however, he could have been in line for more game time only for an untimely knock to stand in the way of his first chance to impress Slot.

Liverpool games that "brilliant" Elliott will miss

Of course, this isn't the first time that Elliott has had to deal with a foot injury, having suffered a dislocated ankle in the 2021/22 campaign, which sidelined him for as many as 34 games. The 21-year-old fought back well and will aim to do the same once again, albeit in far quicker fashion on this occasion, to earn the same type of praise once sent his way by former boss Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp told the press via HITC after Elliott returned from his previous injury: "Is it like that he wishes he would start each game? Yes, probably he wants that. But it was a little bit [like] when he came on he was brilliant, when he started he was not exactly the same. And it’s not a problem."
