Gomes, who currently plies his trade with Ligue 1 side Lille, was recently called up to the England national team by new manager Lee Carsley for their Nations League clashes in the September international break. The midfielder earned his maiden international cap against Ireland last week where he came on as a late substitute and then played the entire 90 minutes against Finland on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old has entered the final year of his contract with the French club and he reportedly does not plan to extend his stay beyond the current campaign. Per The Sun, his contract situation has alerted several Premier League clubs including English giants Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. The report also adds that the Magpies have made Gomes their 'top target' and are planning to approach the player as early as the January transfer window, while Spurs have been long-time admirers of the youngster.

Last month, the England international was involved in a violent clash with Amadou Kone during a Ligue 1 clash between Lille and Reims. The collision resulted in a severe head injury prompting immediate action from the match officials and medical staff. The player, however, returned to action for his club on September 1 before travelling with the Three Lions squad for their Nations League clashes.

Gundogan joined Barcelona in the summer of 2023 as a free agent after his contract with Manchester City expired following their Premier League and Champions League double. The Germany international went on to become an ever-present under Xavi in Catalunya but could now be on the move. New Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has already admitted he's spoken with the midfielder about his future at the club.

The Athletic has now reported that Manchester City are willing to bring back their former captain to the Etihad Stadium this summer, and the claim has also been backed up by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. The report by Romano states that City boss Pep Guardiola is open to a reunion with Gundogan over the summer as the eight-time Premier League champions have not made any signings in midfield.

Barcelona's financial situation appears to be a key reason for Gudogan's potential exit. The Catalans are yet to register £51 million ($66.2 million) new signing Dani Olmo, and the German's sale may allow them to register the Spaniard.

James Pattinson awaits favourite opponents on Boxing Day return

Pattinson is all-but locked in to play his first home Test since in nearly four years, on his home ground

It was a New Zealand surgeon who helped put James Pattinson back together and now the quick bowler will hope to show the full benefits of his career-saving treatment against the Trans-Tasman rivals.Barring a late injury or other unforeseen developments, Pattinson is all but locked in to play his first home Test in nearly four years, on his home ground at the MCG, as Josh Hazlewood’s replacement on Boxing Day. It follows his return to the Test scene during the Ashes, where he played two of the five Tests, at Edgbaston and Headingley, having gone under the knife in 2017 with the operation on his spine carried out by New Zealander Grahame Inglis. He has had to bide his time since and, had it not been for the injury to Hazlewood, faced the prospect of going through the season without a Test appearance. At the beginning of the summer, it was billed as a head-to-head with Mitchell Starc – who is now in career-best form – but Pattinson was ruled out of contention for the Brisbane Test against Pakistan due to his code of conduct suspension, following the slur against Cameron Gannon in the Sheffield Shield match at the MCG.Pattinson, who has played just 19 Tests since his debut in 2011, acknowledged he would learn from his errors but said he wouldn’t be toning down his aggression in the middle.”I just play cricket the way I know how to,” he said. “I suppose if that’s pushing the line, it’s pushing the line. I think when you go through setbacks like being suspended you have to think about that a little bit more, but I think I get the best out of my cricket when I’m getting up there and going 100%.”I’m not going to hold back, there’s a line, sometimes you cross it, and if I look back on it you learn from those mistakes and you try to address them.”When coach Justin Langer effectively rubberstamped Pattinson’s recall yesterday (and when the squad was named last week) he spoke of Pattinson’s hunger to make up for lost time. Pattinson reiterated it.”I’ve been through a lot of setbacks, the hunger has always been there, so hopefully if I’m rewarded with a game I can put in a good performance,” Pattinson said on Monday. “You always have to expect things could pass you by after being through so much disappointment with my back, it’s always in the back of your mind, but I like to keep a good mind on things and work one day at time.”Team-mates are looking forward to him translating his form in training to the middle. “Fingers crossed he gets through the next few days and gets all his bowling done in the middle, because he hasn’t been much fun to face in the nets,” Matthew Wade said. His home return against New Zealand brings him up against an opponent he has had considerable success against with 20 wickets at 17.70 in three Tests. He made his debut against them at the Gabba in 2011, where he took 5 for 27 in the second innings, which was followed by another five-for in the first innings of the next match in Hobart, although that was a Test Australia would go on to lose by seven runs.During the Ashes, he formed pace attacks alongside Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Peter Siddle, but this Boxing Day Test will be first time he makes a trio with Pat Cummins and Starc – the three fastest bowlers currently in contention for the Test side.”I’m pretty excited by the opportunity,” Pattinson said. “Through my whole career I’ve played a lot of cricket with Patty and Mitch and a lot against them in under-age stuff, so to hopefully get a chance to play for them for Australia is pretty exciting.”Following his five wickets in the two Ashes Tests, Pattinson has taken 14 Sheffield Shield scalps at 28.64 this season and one of his outings was on the MCG pitch for the match against Queensland, which was highly rated and is hoped will be the basis for the Test strip after concerns following the abandonment earlier this month.”It was a good cricket wicket, we got a result late on day four which is great,” he said. “Both teams were in with a chance the whole game. There was a bit of movement for the bowlers and you could score runs as well. Hopefully it’s an exciting wicket.”

Sheffield Wednesday could land Gregory replacement by signing EFL starlet

Going into the International break off the back of two defeats to high-flying Leeds United and Ipswich Town – with the 6-0 loss at Portman Road obviously stinging more – Danny Rohl will now hope his Sheffield Wednesday players are re-energised and refocused for the task of attempting to stay up in the Championship once more.

There'll be some obvious pride from an Owls perspective at the number of players who played for their countries over the time off too, including hot prospect Bailey Cadamarteri who scored for the England U19s.

Rohl and Co will be delighted at the constant progression they're seeing from the teenage striker, who has four goals in the senior fold this season for the relegation-threatened Owls also.

The success story of Cadamarteri could well impact Wednesday's transfer business therefore, with the South Yorkshire giants taking a shining to his young trialist who could be signed permanently down the line.

Sheffield Wednesday transfer news

According to a report from Sheffield Star journalist Joe Crann late last week, the Owls are very much keen on 19-year-old trialist James Collins who had been making a splash in the youth circles at Watford before being taken on at Hillsborough.

Only joining the youth set-up at the Hornets last year from non-league Hertford Town, a move for the highly regarded striker could see Wednesday sign yet another young and fresh centre-forward in the mould of Cadamarteri.

Scoring goals regularly for Watford at both U18 and U21 level – with his last flurry of goals coming against Ipswich Town just this month – Collins was even gifted a spot on the Hertfordshire side's bench against Stoke City earlier this campaign when Valerien Ismael was still present in the Vicarage Road hot-seat.

With Lee Gregory's contract expiring this summer, and the Owls man being 35 years of age, it could well be a case of out with the old and in with the new if Collins impresses enough to be rewarded with a permanent deal at Hillsborough.

James Collins could be Lee Gregory's replacement

Gregory has barely featured under Rohl since the German manager took over the reins last October, making just one brief appearance to date under the current Wednesday boss against Cardiff City in December.

Therefore, with this development emerging that a new kid could soon be on the block in a permanent deal, this could give Rohl grounds to get rid of the former Millwall man for good after failing to ever really utilise him since coming into the Owls.

Maths goes out the window as draw and promotion beckon for Gloucestershire and Northants

Graeme van Buuren sings praises of young batting partner, Ben Charlesworth, as Gloucestershire pair dig in

Richard Hobson at Bristol25-Sep-2019Gloucestershire 220 for 7 (van Buuren 93, Charlesworth 77*) v NorthamptonshireWe might be living through strange times, but surely not so strange that either of these counties will now be denied promotion to the first division. Rain has made a mockery of the myriad equations so let’s be done with arithmetic and talk the simple language of cricket: Glamorgan must bat with the precision of Donald Bradman at the speed of Brian Lara, then take wickets at the strike rate of SF Barnes to beat Durham and stop Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire from going up.The game here at Nevil Road is heading for a draw, probably of the dullest and soggiest variety. That will matter not a jot in the wider context. Nor will Northamptonshire lament a strangely disengaged performance on Wednesday when they took only a single wicket and Gloucestershire claimed the batting point they needed to ensure promotion remains entirely in their own hands. They require a draw plus three more points with either bat or ball. A mere draw will do for Northants.Concern around noon on Monday when Gloucester collapsed to 67 for 6 had dissipated – drowned is perhaps a better way of putting it – by the time Graeme van Buuren pushed Rob Keogh through extra cover for the boundary that carried Gloucester to the critical 200 mark. His stand of 151 with Ben Charlesworth began pre-lunch on day one and was ten minutes from continuing into the fourth when van Buuren, who scored 93, stabbed outside off stump to Gareth Berg and was caught behind. The fact that Gloucester lost their first division status as far back as 2005 might explain why so many supporters stayed on with barely a murmur for the four-and-a-half hours between the scheduled start and eventual three o’clock beginning. Such a long and hard-fought return will be something to celebrate despite the absence of prize money for third place. Northamptonshire will receive £57,000 as runners-up to Lancashire. In other circumstances, they might have grown more restless. It is hard to imagine the crowd at an international match behaving as placidly with the sun shining, the playing field open, nets in place and stumps beside the pitch ready to be inserted. Yet the place was a hive of inactivity through the morning save for the occasional sight of a player or the umpires wandering out, scraping the soles of their boots on problem areas and wincing their way back off. With the situation even worse at Chester-le-Street, the slippy, sludgy areas around footmarks on the edges of used pitches might have suited both teams. Gloucester, in the weaker position, would have been content not to risk defeat. “Mud, mud, glorious mud,” they must have sung, like Flanders and Swann, in the sanctity of their dressing room. Yet once umpires David Millns and Mike Burns did consider play to be possible, it was they who switched on quicker.Van Buuren played and missed a couple of times against Ben Sanderson in the early exchanges and Charlesworth survived a reasonable appeal for leg-before by Keogh, the most dangerous of the bowlers on a surface offering some turn. Otherwise, the closest that Northants came to breaking the stand as it developed was a run out opportunity when Charlesworth was sent back by his partner, Keogh missing with the throw. They made a tricky pair: Charlesworth tall, upright and left-handed, van Buuren a short, right-handed croucher. Van Buuren punched anything slightly short, especially through the off side, while Charlesworth’s off-drives again flowed like cream from a jug. At 18, he is a prospect who will make crowds purr with his strokes. That in turn may lead to frustration if returns fall short of unreasonable expectations. He needs to be allowed to develop at his own pace.”Ben is so solid,” van Buuren said. “He makes bowlers look slow, he plays them with ease. It is a sexy forward defensive he has. He is an attractive player but he is already a good player too and you have to remember how young he is. I said to somebody yesterday how he reminds me so much of Aiden Markram, the way he loads up, stands still and has that same whirl of the bat. He is class.”Van Buuren is a friend of Markram, a fellow South African, who averages 43.80 from his first 17 Test matches. It is quite a compliment. He also drew a comparison with Chris Dent, blooded young by Gloucester but now their steadiest batsman approaching 9,000 career runs. Sanderson was generous too, praising Charlesworth for his temperament and judgement of what to leave.Charlesworth has already equalled his career best; tomorrow would be quite a day to set a new one. Equally, while van Buuren was disappointed at missing his own hundred he could reflect on the more important picture. “We just have to rock up for one more day and play good, hard cricket,” he said. “Stay grounded, keep humble and hopefully cricket will look after us in the end.”

'If you see how England play, you get tears in your eyes' – Ex-Germany star insists Euro 2024 teams will not fear facing Three Lions as Jude Bellingham told he needs a 'kick up the backside'

Ex-Germany star Markus Babbel claimed that teams are not afraid of facing England in Euro 2024 and Jude Bellingham deserves a "kick up the backside."

England have been lacklustre in Euro 2024Bellingham has been thoroughly unimpressiveBabbel slammed Three Lions for performance WHAT HAPPENED?

England's performance in the group stage has left much to be desired. Despite entering the tournament with high expectations, the Three Lions have struggled to find their rhythm, prompting concerns about their tactical approach under Gareth Southgate. They started off the tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over Serbia, but their form dipped significantly in the subsequent matches and were held to a draw by Denmark and Slovenia.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT MARKUS BABBEL SAID

Former Germany international Babbel has been vocal about England's shortcomings. He expressed his astonishment at England's lacklustre displays, noting that they appeared disjointed and ineffective.

In an interview with Babbel said: "Germany wouldn’t have any fear coming up against England. England might well have the best players but they have been so poor. If you see how England play, you get tears in your eyes. I’m not sure what they are trying to do, if you look at Trent Alexander-Arnold he is incredible for Liverpool and then for England, you’d think it was his twin brother.

"There are top players, but no one is performing, England can’t be worse than they were in the group stage. I wish that Germany would have played against England because it was the easiest draw if you go by the group games. If they perform like they can then it will be difficult to beat them, but at the moment they look awful."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Central to England's struggles has been the form of Bellingham. After a stellar season with Real Madrid, where he showcased his scoring prowess and midfield dominance, Bellingham was expected to be a key player for England. He delivered a standout performance in the opener against Serbia, scoring the decisive goal. However, his impact waned in the matches that followed, particularly in the goalless draw against Slovenia.

According to Babbel, Bellingham's body language on the pitch has been concerning, suggesting that the young midfielder might be overestimating his current standing due to his Champions League success with Real Madrid.

"The body language from Jude Bellingham, my God, what's going on with him?" he asked.

"Maybe he thinks that because he won the Champions League that now he’s the absolute superstar of England? Come on. If I was playing with him, I would kick him up the backside. He's a top, top player. There's a reason why he won the Champions League with Real Madrid because he's an outstanding player, but when I see his body language, I go mad.

"He's still a young player. If Harry Kane was doing it then maybe. He has played so many years in the Premier League and was often the top scorer. Okay, I’d understand that. But, Bellingham? Come on. He's doing well with Real Madrid but when you’re playing for England you have to give everything. If you don’t want to run, that's not good enough for me because I expect so much more from this kind of player."

With the knockout stages looming, Southgate faces crucial decisions regarding his team selection and tactics. There have been suggestions that Bellingham might be better utilized in a deeper role alongside Declan Rice, allowing him to focus on his strengths in ball distribution and defensive duties. This adjustment could also help address England's midfield issues, providing more stability and control in matches. Their next test will be against Slovakia in the last-16 on Sunday.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe already looks indecisive but Man Utd's rivals will be thrilled: Winners and losers of Red Devils' shock decision to stick with Erik ten Hag

The Dutchman looked like a dead man walking at the end of the Premier League season – but his FA Cup win has granted him a stay of execution

Well, who saw that coming?! After just over two weeks of assessment, Manchester United have decided that Erik ten Hag deserves to continue as manager. Such a development seemed unthinkable after an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League, as well as a humiliating group-stage exit from the Champions League.

However, it seems that United's shock FA Cup triumph, which saw them pull off an almighty upset in the final by beating Manchester City at Wembley, changed everything. Of course, the lack of one truly outstanding candidate to replace Ten Hag at the helm obviously helped the Dutchman hold onto his job too.

So, who benefits most from this surprise turn of events? Who'll be celebrating right now? And who'll be fearing for the future? Below, GOAL runs through all of the winners and losers of Ten Hag staying at Old Trafford…

  • Getty

    LOSER: Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has shown his ruthless streak over the past few months by implementing a series of severe cost-cutting measures at Old Trafford. Consequently, it was almost taken as a given that the British billionaire would promptly dispense with the services of a manager who had overseen a historically bad season at United.

But the review went on longer than anyone expected. The wait for a decision on Ten Hag's future had entered a third week before an official announcement was finally made. INEOS believes that such a thorough process was a necessity but, rightly or wrongly, the delay did nothing but convey the impression that Ratcliffe & Co. were keeping Ten Hag waiting while they tried – and failed – to find a better manager to take over.

Many of the season-ticket holders that were subjected to a record-equalling nine home defeats last season will also be astounded that INEOS spent so much time mulling over the merits of keeping Ten Hag – and still made the wrong call in their eyes.

Make no mistake about it: the way in which this whole affair has been handled has made United's new co-owners look surprisingly weak and indecisive. The fans hoping that Ratcliffe's arrival would signal the start of a new era of success are now fearing more of the same dismal decision-making.

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Erik ten Hag

Ten Hag is said to be "delighted" by the outcome of the review – and why wouldn't he be? At the end of United's worst-ever Premier League campaign, he looked like a dead man walking. Indeed, a once-reputable English newspaper even claimed that the decision had already been taken to sack the manager.

However, history appears to have repeated itself somewhat. An FA Cup win all the way back in 1990 saved Sir Alex Ferguson's job. It's now done likewise for Ten Hag, who is not only staying but is also set to be given a new contract to solidify his position at Old Trafford – which represents one of the more incredible managerial turnarounds we've seen in recent years.

  • Getty / GOAL

    LOSER: Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho may not have wanted to go back to Old Trafford anyway. Turning his loan stay at Borussia Dortmund into a permanent transfer was clearly always the dream, given his return to Signal Iduna Park helped him rediscover something approaching his best form. However, there's certainly no chance of him going back to Manchester now that Ten Hag has been confirmed as coach for another season.

As well as publicly accusing the manager of making him a "scapegoat" for United's poor performances, he also effectively called him a liar. Given there is presently no evidence to suggest that Sancho's stance on apologising for his remarks has softened, it seems that his United career is now over.

    WINNER: Antony

Ten Hag staying is obviously good news for Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, two young men who have flourished since being given a chance to prove themselves at the highest level by the United boss. However, there will be no happier player than Antony right now. His Old Trafford career might just have been rescued after a disastrous season that yielded just one goal and one assist in 29 Premier League appearances.

It's certainly in Ten Hag's interest to give the Brazilian another chance. Antony was the attacker that he felt compelled to take from former club Ajax (not Muhammed Kudus!) and the winger's dismal displays and staggering £82million transfer fee have long been used as a stick with which to beat Ten Hag.

Given no other club would be willing to pay even a third of that fee for Antony this summer, it now seems likely that he'll get an unexpected and undeserved chance to belatedly prove his worth in the Premier League.

Finch's Australia shed aggression but not winning ways

Australia captain says 2015 World Cup “quite aggressive on the field, mainly from us” but this time around it’s “great spirit” on display from the teams

Andrew Miller at Lord's28-Jun-2019Aaron Finch, Australia’s captain, believes that his team’s reformed attitude in the field has been a factor in a World Cup that has been notable for the spirit between the teams. In beating England last week on the same strip that will be used for tomorrow’s showdown against New Zealand, Finch’s Australians became the first team to book a place in next month’s semi-finals.And looking back on the 2015 event in Australia, when they beat the same opponents to secure the World Cup for a record fifth time, Finch admitted that the tone of that tournament on that occasion had been significantly more aggressive, “mainly from us”.But, in the wake of the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal – and the bans for three of their players including the then captain and vice-captain Steven Smith and David Warner – Australia have gone out of their way to present a new, more friendly, attitude. So far at this World Cup, a softer approach has not impacted on their hard attitude in the big moments, and Finch is happy to revel in the wider benefits.”I think it has been a great spirit out on the field, regardless of results,” Finch said. “You see a lot of smiles on people’s faces, which is a good sign that the game’s in really good hands at the moment, and that it is being played in the right spirit.”I’m not sure if it’s been a conscious effort from individual countries, but it certainly felt like a really, really good tournament.”Australia and New Zealand have been involved in two of the stand-out moments of sporting behaviour in the tournament so far – firstly when Virat Kohli appealed to India’s fans at The Oval to stop booing Smith and Warner – an intervention that led to a mid-pitch handshake with Smith shortly afterwards – and then at Old Trafford last week, when New Zealand’s players queued up to console Carlos Brathwaite, after his stunning century had come so close to sealing victory for West Indies.”It’s tough to compare different times [but] I know the last one was quite an aggressive World Cup on the field, mainly from us,” Finch said. “We were quite aggressive in our approach and how we went about things.”But it’s been great. This one has been absolutely brilliant, and I think what’s been really pleasing as well, [comes when] you look around the stands, regardless of who is playing.”In the past, if the home team is not playing, there could be some really empty stands, but this has been unbelievable. They have been packed-out venues and really quality cricket, so people are definitely getting their value for money, too.”Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s captain, echoed the sentiments about the crowd, and looked forward to sampling a different vibe at Lord’s from the one that he has been used to on his previous visits.”The atmospheres have varied a lot,” he said. “Pakistan was very loud. Bangladesh, very loud. India, we didn’t even play and they were very loud [chuckles].”Usually you come to Lord’s, there’s sort of a quiet murmur when you play England, but I guess playing Australia it might be a little bit different when you have Kiwis and Australians filling out the seats. It will be a really good atmosphere, whatever it is, but I know for a fact that both teams are just looking forward to getting into the cricket.”Australia, for once, might not have anticipated going into tomorrow’s contest as favourites, having struggled throughout 2018, including a 5-0 series defeat against England. But order has been restored with their comprehensive displays in the crunch moments of this event, and Finch said his side was ready once again to embrace the role of tournament front-runners.”Oh, I think that any time you have pressure on you, it’s because the expectations high, because of what you have done in the recent history,” he said.”So you can never shy away from that, and you can look at it either way. You can look at it as a burden, and only you can stuff it up, but I think at the end of the day, when you’re talking about [being favourites] and things like that, you also have to appreciate the amount of work that goes in behind the scenes from the coaches and everyone to get to that position.”Whether it’s us, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, I think the expectation for everyone is all the same; that you turn up and that you can win the World Cup. So if it did happen, it would be a huge achievement for the country.”Despite their damaging defeat against Australia, England remain in the running to win their first World Cup, in spite of Jonny Bairstow’s belief that his team’s critics are “waiting for them to fail”. And while Finch said that he hadn’t seen anything quite that explicit in the media, his own team’s recent brushes with the opinion columns had persuaded them to ban newspapers in the team environment.”I haven’t seen anything written [about England],” he said. “I’ve watched a TV, a bit of Sky News and things like that that, but in terms of papers, we don’t have them around our team room.”We have made a conscious effort of that over the tournament, and that was basically on the back of coming over here. We knew that there would be some stuff written and there would be some opinions had when we first landed in the country.”So we just wanted to take as much white noise as we could away from our focus. It is quite hard to comment on it because I honestly haven’t seen much of it.”But it’s about getting away from the game and make sure you’re refreshing as much as you can,” he added, joking that he had been spending a lot of time on the golf course until his wife arrived in the country, and now shopping is his primary pastime.”Overall, it’s about making sure that if there’s half a day, that you take that for yourself and do everything that you can to clear your mind.”For me, that’s cafes and golf. For Usman [Khawaja], that’s shopping. A few of us play golf. Steve Smith is still walking around his room with a cricket bat in his hand. It’s just totally different for everyone, but just mentally refreshing every chance you get is so important.”
