Washington Spirit star Trinity Rodman exits game with knee injury, the same day she was called into Emma Hayes' latest USWNT camp

Trinity Rodman was injured during the Washington Spirit's CONCACAF W Champions Cup group stage win over Monterrey Wednesday night and had to be removed from the game. The USWNT star couldn't put any weight on her right leg as she departed. Rodman was in distress after attempting a tackle, and left the field on crutches at half time.

  • A tense moment

Rodman took an awkward step onto her right leg while attempting to challenge an opponent shortly before half time. She was able to walk off the pitch with support, but was in tears on the bench. She limped off the pitch on crutches a bag of ice on her knee at the break.

    Injury problems of late

The injury comes at an unfortunate time for Rodman, who has struggled with a litany of back problems of late. She missed nearly 4 months of action after the back injury, and was just starting to rediscover her best. The gold medal-winning forward has tallied seven goal contributions in an injury-shortened campaign. She was named to the 2024 NWSL best XI.

  • 'Had to play without her for more than a year'

Emma Hayes will likely be concerned. The USWNT coach called Rodman into her squad for the first time since April, as they face Portugal and New Zealand over the next two weeks.

The former Chelsea boss backed her star winger to make an impact in her return, dubbing her "one of the best players in the world" in a news conference Wednesday afternoon after the roster announcement. She was expected to feature as the USWNT gear up for 2027 World Cup qualification.

The Spirit didn't offer any news on Rodman's injury immediately after the game. Rodman is expected to undergo scans on Thursday. It was an otherwise successful evening for Washington, who are currently second in the NWSL standings. They  strolled to a 4-0 win over Monterrey, and are currently top of Group B after four matches.

Farke can replace James by unleashing "electric" 19-year-old Leeds talent

Leeds United have been hit with an injury blow ahead of their clash with Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road in the Premier League on Saturday.

Wales international Daniel James has suffered an ankle injury that is currently being assessed by the club, although they are hopeful that it will not be a long-term issue.

Journalist Graham Smyth claims that the forward is set for “weeks” on the sidelines, debunking some speculation on social media that he was due to be out for months with an ACL injury.

If James misses several weeks and games through injury with this ankle issue, Daniel Farke should avoid relying on Jack Harrison as an alternative to Brenden Aaronson on the right flank.

Why Jack Harrison should not replace Dan James

The left-footed attacker returned to Elland Road this summer after spending the previous two seasons on loan with Everton in the Premier League, and he has yet to fully win the fans back over.

Harrison has produced no goals, no key passes, no ‘big chances’ created, and no assists in five appearances in the top-flight for Leeds so far this term, per Sofascore, which shows that he has offered virtually nothing at the top end of the pitch.

That should not come as a surprise to many, though, because the former Manchester City academy prospect struggled badly in the final third for Everton in the 2024/25 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, Harrison managed one direct goal contribution in 2,088 minutes of football in the Premier League for the Toffees before his return to West Yorkshire.

This is why Farke should turn to U21 talent Connor Douglas to replace James in the squad whilst the Wales international is missing through injury.

Why Leeds should unleash Connor Douglas

The 19-year-old attacker is a versatile star who can play through the middle as a number ten or out on the right flank, which suggests that he could be a suitable alternative to Aaronson in the short-term, given that the American is a similarly versatile wide option.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Douglas’ form for Leeds at academy level suggests that he is an exciting young player who has the potential to make an impact at the top end of the pitch, after he scored in a 1-0 win over Norwich City’s U21s on Monday night.

The English winger has scored six goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances for the club at U21 level, as well as six goals and three assists in 27 matches for the U18 side, per Transfermarkt.

These statistics show that he can contribute with goals and assists from a wide position, something that Harrison has struggled to do, and that is why he should be given a chance to see what he can do at first-team level whilst James is out with an ankle injury.

Douglas was described as an “electric” forward who is a “joy to watch” by PureFootball writer Trent Gaffney, which also suggests that he could get supporters off their feet with his front-footed and direct play.

Fans may prefer to see a talented young forward given an opportunity to shine and showcase his exciting potential in James’ absence, instead of Harrison being given yet another chance after failing to impress in the last 13 months or so.

That is why Farke must unleash Douglas as the replacement for James in the Premier League, for however many matches he misses, instead of just using Harrison.

Fabrizio Romano: Arsenal chief Berta thinks "faultless" star is a "bargain"

Arsenal continued their solid start to 2025/2026 with a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League on Tuesday, courtesy of super sub duo Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

Arsenal see off Athletic Bilbao with crucial Champions League win

Despite all the uncertainty surrounding Martinelli’s future, with the Brazilian recently tipped to leave in January as he’s no longer a guaranteed starter, Mikel Arteta was sent a clear message after his heroics in Spain.

The 24-year-old put in a match-winning display off the bench, scoring Arsenal’s opener after breaking away from the Bilbao defence to fire home, with Martinelli setting up fellow exit-linked teammate Leandro Trossard for their second of the 90.

Arteta heaped praise on Martinelli for his stunning European display after Arsenal struggled to break down Bilbao, with the forward ultimately showcasing that he still has plenty to offer in the Premier League title race.

Alongside Martinelli and Trossard, summer signing Cristhian Mosquera also impressed yet again in place of the unavailable William Saliba.

The 21-year-old, who Arsenal believe could be one of the best in the world over these next few years (Graeme Bailey), has been an assured presence at the heart of Arteta’s backline — despite his young age and inexperience playing English football.

Noni Madueke has arguably been Arsenal’s most impressive summer signing thus far, but Mosquera is proving to be worth every penny of the initial £13 million that Andrea Berta paid to sign him from Valencia.

He put in yet another excellent showing against Bilbao, and it’s arguably harsh that Arteta will be forced to drop Mosquera once Saliba fully returns to the fold.

Andrea Berta thinks Cristhian Mosquera is a "bargain" for Arsenal

Speaking to GiveMeSport, via their newsletter, Fabrizio Romano has shared exactly what Berta thinks about the young Spaniard, after he arguably sealed one of the best low-cost buys of the window.

Mosquera had the best tackle success rate of any La Liga centre-back at a staggering 76.7 per cent, according to Opta, with the Spain Under-21 international looking extremely capable in one-v-one duels.

Gunners legend Martin Keown has already tipped the defender for big things after what he’s already seen — heaping praise on Mosquera’s pace and strength whilst likening him to both Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

The sky appears to be the limit for him, and some reports claim that Mosquera’s value has already tripled just months after joining the north Londoners.

Members of the media, like Charles Watts, have also lavished praise on him after his fire-start to life in N5.

Perfect for Miovski: Rangers could axe Martin to hire "outstanding" coach

Russell Martin remains Rangers manager, but for how much longer will this be the case?

The current events at Ibrox are historic, but not in a good way, with Martin still yet to win a league match in five attempts, following last weekend’s embarrassing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Hearts, making this the club’s worst start to a campaign since 1978.

Before the Gers are next in Premiership action, they’ll host Hibernian in a League Cup quarter-final on Saturday and then commence their Europa League campaign with a visit from Genk the following Thursday.

However, defeat at the hands of Hibs this weekend would surely signal the end for under-fire Martin, so should 49ers Enterprises already be making an ambitious move for an “outstanding” manager, one who would get the best out of Rangers’ best players?

Bojan Miovski's difficult start at Rangers

Bojan Miovski has only made two appearances in a Rangers jersey so far, but it is already clear that the team are not playing to his strengths.

The North Macedonian striker joined the club in late August from Girona for a fee that could rise to £4.2m.

He endured a pretty miserable spell in Catalonia, but was on fire when he was last seen in Scotland, scoring 44 times in 98 appearances for Aberdeen, four of which came against Rangers.

Against Heart of Midlothian last weekend, Miovski did miss one big chance, but touched the ball only 21 times, 12 Rangers players accumulated more, clearly not involved in general play enough.

He has previously proven that if you give him chances he will score goals, so could a change in manager transform the 26-year-old and help him rediscover his best form?

Rangers' dream Russell Martin upgrade

Matt Smith of Give Me Sport asserts that Rangers should replace Martin with Nuno Espírito Santo, which would certainly be a statement appointment should it come to pass.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

The 51-year-old was controversially sacked as Nottingham Forest manager earlier this month, following a public falling out with owner Evangelos Marinakis, who chose to appoint Ange Postecoglou as his successor.

Well, the early signs are that this wasn’t the wisest move, with Postecoglou losing his first two matches in charge, battered 3-0 at Arsenal, before Wednesday night’s complete collapse in the EFL Cup, 2-0 up at Swansea only to lose 3-2, conceding twice in injury time.

Commentator Adam Summerton praises the “outstanding job” Nuno did at Forest, with writer Henry Winter praising his “counterattacking style” that was so effective, able to make a team both compact and threatening in attack, something Rangers are neither right now.

When Nuno arrived at the City Ground in December 2023, Forest were in genuine danger of relegation, also hit with a four-point deduction, but he guided them to safety, before last season’s shock seventh-place finish saw them qualify for Europe for the first time in 30 years.

Overall, this was his seventh managerial role, boasting an impressive CV, as the table below documents.

Among Nuno’s achievements, he has won the EFL Championship and Saudi Pro League titles, also leading Rio Ave to both domestic cup finals in 2014, as well as achieving back-to-back top seven finishes in the Premier League with Wolves, the club doing so for the first time since 1961.

He didn’t do quite so well in charge of Valencia, Porto and Spurs, but is a master at getting his team to punch above their weight, as was very much the case at Nottingham Forest last season.

So why would Nuno be the right man to get the best out of Miovski?

Well, using his Nottingham Forest side as the blueprint, their primary attacking threat came from wingers Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi driving the ball forward at pace, something Rangers’ summer signings Oliver Antman and Djeidi Gassama have already proven themselves capable of replicating, as this goal against Viktoria Plzeň during Champions League qualifying demonstrates.

This style helped Chris Wood enjoy a late-career renaissance that surely no one could’ve foreseen.

Last season, the New Zealander scored 20 Premier League goals, only Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak and Erling Braut Håland managed more, beating his previous best-ever top-flight tally of 14, doing so as a 33-year-old.

Thus, if Nuno was able to implement his counter-attacking style, this could revitalise the attacking options Rangers have, and set them up for another deep run in the Europa League.

Having previously managed massive clubs in Portugal, Spain, Saudi Arabia and England, he would represent quite the coup, but most did expect the 49ers to target a big name when they arrived in the summer, so he would certainly galvanise the bereft and furious Rangers support.

Man Utd have two players to blame for Sesko's nightmare first start

This summer was very much the transfer window of striker moves and Manchester United were involved heavily within that.

While Alexander Isak was at the centre of his spat with Newcastle United, eventually joining Liverpool, the likes of Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, Yoane Wissa, Nico Woltemade, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko were making big-money moves of their own.

For a host of those names, they’ve made impressive start to life at their new clubs.

With three goals in four matches, Gyokeres is already the division’s second-top scorer behind Erling Haaland while Pedro and Ekitike have scored two apiece in the Premier League. Woltemade even netted on his top-flight debut for the Toon on Saturday afternoon.

For Sesko, however, it’s been a troubled start. Perhaps the writing was on the wall when he was listed as United’s tenth penalty taker in the shoot-out defeat to Grimsby Town a few weeks ago.

His first start, which he was rewarded with in the Manchester derby on Sunday, also wasn’t filled with much glory.

Sesko first start for Man United in numbers

When United signed Rasmus Hojlund, he was listed as a project striker. When Joshua Zirkzee signed at Old Trafford, he was also listed as a project striker.

Therefore, what Ruben Amorim needed this season was a proven figure, someone like an Ollie Watkins who has been there and done it in the Premier League.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

What did they do? Well, they splashed out £74m on Slovenia forward, Sesko. Acquired from RB Leipzig, the big centre forward has already been described as “the new Erling Haaland” and it’s easy to see why.

He’s got a strong shot on him, has lengthy strides and above all else, he’s got power in abundance.

The issue is, he’s still very raw, something that 13 Bundesliga goals last term sum up well.

Benjamin Sesko 2024-25 stats (timeless)

Since moving to United, it’s been a tale of woe for the Slovenian who doesn’t look at the races at all. His display against City, albeit a formidable opposition, showcased that.

The Manchester Evening News noted how the young attacker was “quiet” in the second half, and while he did have United’s only attempts at goal in the first half, he was ultimately replaced on 80 minutes, having managed an expected goals tally of just 0.03.

Sesko only had one shot and completed just 54% of his passes, outlining a frustrated and isolated figure at the top end of the pitch.

To sum up his woes, he had fewer touches (19) than goalkeeper Altay Bayindir (37), a statistic that rubberstamps his dreary day at the office at the Etihad.

That said, he was rather starved of service and it wasn’t all his own fault.

Two Man United players were to blame for Sesko's performance

Two of the bright sparks in this United team so far this season are new signings, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

While Cunha is yet to find the net since trading Wolverhampton for Manchester, Mbeumo has scored, bagging in the win over Burnley prior to the international break.

Mbeumo once again looked like one of very few bright sparks in Amorim’s side on Sunday but he and Sesko were arguably let down by a lack of service.

Indeed, with Mason Mount and Cunha absent through injury, it meant a rare start for Amad in the Premier League this term in a more advanced role.

The Ivorian has featured at right-wing back more often this season, a role unfamiliar to him. Yet, with Mbeumo having signed, a player who has similar traits and tendancies, it’s unlikely he’ll feature in an attacking role on too many occasions.

With Cunha absent, however, it gave the 23-year-old an opportunity to showcase his skills in the final third. Sadly, he did not showcase them very well. Listed as a left winger on the team sheet, on a regular basis in the second half Mbeumo and Amad ended up on the same wing.

Even when the former Sunderland loanee was on the left, he failed to create anything of note for Sesko. By full-time, he had failed with both of his dribble attempts, not completed an accurate cross and only provided two key passes.

Behind him, wing-back Patrick Dorgu also did very little to help their new striker who was eagerly waiting inside the area, with the two of them combining to lose possession a whopping 25 times.

Dorgu did provide three key passes but in the words of MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst, “he had chances to service Sesko but his crossing was abject.”

The goals will flow for the big-money signing at some stage but he will undoubtedly need a better supply line than he was given by Amad and Dorgu on Saturday.

Sesko was poor but it wasn’t all his own fault. Truth be told, the whole United side are being let down by Amorim’s system. That’s a story for another day, however.

Worse than Sesko: Amorim must drop Man Utd flop who was "nowhere near it"

Manchester United should drop this flop who was even worse than Benjamin Sesko in the derby.

Cameron Green comes to Gloucestershire rescue with battling hundred

Bracey plays key role in innings-turning stand as hosts close in on first-innings 424

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay17-May-2025

Cameron Green produced a vital century•Gloucestershire County Cricket Club

Cameron Green demonstrated true grit in scoring a much-needed hundred to extricate Gloucestershire from a spot of bother on day two of the Rothesay County Championship Second Division match against Kent at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol.Reduced to 139 for 4 in reply to Kent’s first-innings 424, Gloucestershire were indebted to their overseas hired hand, who registered a battling 102 not out from 150 balls with 12 fours and a six, and shared in a revitalising unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 168 with James Bracey to steer the home side to the relative safety of 307 for 4 by the close, just 117 runs behind. Bracey finished unbeaten on 69 from 134 balls and Gloucestershire are already two batting bonus points to the good.Jake Ball took 2 for 67 and Nathan Gilchrist and Grant Stewart claimed a wicket apiece as Kent applied themselves diligently in the field, but the visitors will have to make the new ball count in the morning if they are to shift pressure back onto their opponents in a contest which looks increasingly likely to end in a draw.Resuming their first innings on 386 for 6, Kent had earlier lost their last four wickets for the addition of 38 runs, Ajeet Singh Dale returning career-best figures of 7 for 110 from 26 overs. He accounted for Stewart and Chris Benjamin, who scored 182 and 93 respectively in staging a partnership of 264, a record seventh wicket stand in all matches for Kent, who were dismissed in 110.4 overs. There may have still been some shine left on the relatively new ball, but it was back to business as usual for Stewart and Benjamin, Kent’s seventh wicket pair requiring four overs to bank a fourth batting bonus point. For their part, the home side desperately needed wickets and skipper Cameron Bancroft threw the ball to Singh Dale, Gloucestershire’s most incisive bowler on day one.He claimed his first five-wicket haul of the season in his third over from the Ashley Down Road end, inducing Stewart to play a tired shot and edge to second slip. Having advanced his career-best first-class score to 182 from 189 balls, hit 20 fours and 5 sixes and dominated a Kent record-breaking seventh wicket partnership of 264 with Benjamin, the Italy international walked off to a standing ovation with the scoreboard on 401 for 7.His erstwhile partner in runs departed soon afterwards, Benjamin attempting to drive Singh Dale and nicking off to wicketkeeper James Bracey, who took a straightforward catch to terminate a magnificently obdurate innings on 93 from 244 deliveries. The patient Benjamin had defied Gloucestershire for five and a half hours, transforming an innings that had been deep in trouble on 137 for 6 on the first day.Presented with an opportunity to improve upon the career-best 6 for 41 he took against Worcestershire at New Road in April 2023, Singh Dale ran in hard, located Ball’s outside edge and raised his arm in celebration before even Bracey had pouched the catch that further reduced the visitors to 414 for 9. He was denied an eighth victim when Zaman Akhter had Kashif Ali held at deep backward square to bring the innings to a close shortly after midday.Kent’s top order batsmen scratched a mere eight runs from 10 overs against a new ball that nipped off the seam on the first day, but Gloucestershire openers Bancroft and Ben Charlesworth encountered few problems on an essentially flat surface as they safely negotiated 12 overs to reach lunch on 48 without loss. But there was just enough assistance from the pitch to keep the Kent seamers interested and Stewart effected a breakthrough early in the second session, Bancroft prodding defensively outside off stump and nicking to slip. Gloucestershire’s skipper had scored 26 from 36 deliveries and staged an opening stand of 54 with Charlesworth inside 13 overs to at least afford the innings a decent start.Gilchrist and Stewart mustered sufficient movement off the pitch to trouble the batsmen, but left handers Charlesworth and Ollie Price played steadfastly, punished the bad bad when it came along and gradually laid the foundations for a meaningful partnership. Gloucestershire’s progress was smooth until Charlesworth fell into a trap set for him, pulling a short-pitched delivery from Ball and holing out to deep backward square for an 87-ball 41. The second wicket pair had added 45 in 13.5 overs and Gloucestershire were 99 for 2.When last they batted together, Price and Miles Hammond had staged a stand of 203 for the third wicket in a drawn match against Lancashire. Still in good touch following his career-best 253 at Old Trafford, Price played some glorious shots in raising 40 from 51 balls with 9 fours, only to be pinned lbw by Gilchrist with the score 119 for 3. It felt like a big wicket and Kent were positively on a roll when Hammond fell for 18 soon afterwards, playing a back foot defensive shot to a fullish delivery from Ball and offering a catch to Tawanda Muyeye at first slip. Having lost three wickets for 40 runs in 7.4 overs, Gloucestershire were 139-4 and under mounting pressure, still 285 behind.Green and Bracey ensured the home side reached the tea interval without further mishap on 156 for 4 and these two continued to build steadily as conditions eased in the final session, going to an assured 50 partnership from 120 balls. Green made a hundred on debut for Gloucestershire at Canterbury last month and clearly enjoys playing against Kent. He went to 50 from 106 balls on this occasion, reaching that landmark with his fourth four, a back foot force through the covers off Gilchrist.Runs now began to flow and the fifth wicket pair required only 62 balls more to raise the hundred partnership as Kent’s bowlers began to tire. Playing the supporting role to perfection, Bracey went to 50 via 101 balls with his tenth four, a cut shot off Kashir Ali. Gloucestershire banked a second batting bonus point and there was still time for Green to move to his hundred from 146 balls, the Western Australian heaving Kashif through mid-wicket for his twelfth four to spark raucous celebrations among those who had stayed on into the early evening sunshine.

Pakistan’s next Test series comes at home against South Africa in October.

Kevin Phillips 2.0: Sunderland academy star is their best talent since Jobe

Sunderland’s season might well have hit a bump in the road at Old Trafford on Saturday, but the Premier League newcomers won’t feel completely derailed by the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United.

After all, the Black Cats are still sitting in an encouraging ninth position in the early standings, with an expectation that they can bounce back immediately from the defeat at the Theatre of Dreams when Vitor Pereira’s winless Wolverhampton Wanderers next come to Wearside.

Regis Le Bris should very much be commended for this top start to the season, as well, with the Frenchman actually up for the honour of September’s Manager of the Month accolade.

He is joined by Granit Xhaka and Robin Roefs in being recognised for their efforts over the last month with the Mackems pair up for Player of the Month.

In an alternate reality, the current make-up of the Black Cats team could look disjointed and messy after a hectic off-season that saw signings aplenty join the building, but also saw Jobe Bellingham disappointingly up and leave for the glamour of Borussia Dortmund.

Fortunately, even without him, they’ve been right as rain in 2025/26 to date.

How Jobe Bellingham is faring at Dortmund

Amazingly, despite garnering much hype at the Stadium of Light, the ex-Sunderland boy wonder never pulled on the famous red and white stripes of the Black Cats in the Premier League.

Instead, the 20-year-old’s final chapter on Wearside fell in the Championship as Le Bris and Co. sealed promotion, with journalist Josh Bunting even hailing the England U21 international as “sensational” when strutting his stuff at the promotion chasers.

While he did begin his footballing education at Birmingham City, it’s fair to say Bellingham very much honed his craft at Sunderland, with the standout number seven managing to mature at a rapid pace, after being handed the first-team reins initially by Tony Mowbray.

A bumper tally of 11 goals and four assists from 90 Sunderland clashes would eventually alert the Bundesliga giants of Dortmund to his services, with the Black and Yellow forking out a substantial £27.8m to land the exciting midfielder.

It hasn’t all gone to plan for Bellingham on German soil so far, though, with just two Bundesliga starts coming his way this season.

In fact, his spell in Germany has been a little controversial thus far with his father, Mark, reportedly unhappy with his son’s playing time, directing anger at manager Niko Kovac.

However, it still goes without saying that the 20-year-old was a stunning success story on Sunderland’s end, with the youngster once just a wide-eyed teenager but now a Champions League figure for Kovac’s side.

So, where could the next Bellingham come from?

Sunderland's biggest talent since Bellingham

Just one glance at those who have previously donned the number ten shirt at Sunderland gives you a quick indication as to why it’s a cherished number.

Kevin Phillips wore that exact number when he bagged 30 goals for the Black Cats during one single top-flight season, while Jordan Henderson also briefly pulled it on, too, before the might of Liverpool came knocking.

While it is, of course, early days into his Sunderland development, Timur Tuterov might well be in line to also pull on that much-talked-about number very soon.

It’s a bold call, indeed, but the Ukrainian is displaying a Phillips-like potency for the U21s this season, as one of his efforts – which saw Tuterov score a fine solo effort – seeing him nominated for Sunderland’s goal of the month competition for September.

Indeed, from just four Premier League 2 contests so far this campaign, the Ukraine U21 international has managed to bag a blistering five strikes in just four games, with back-to-back braces falling into his lap against West Ham and Burnley.

It’s rather evident to see why academy manager Robin Nicholls once described him as “an exciting prospect.”

Should he continue scoring goals at that rate of knots, then Tuterov could also be the biggest talent Sunderland has managed to produce since turning Bellingham into a Dortmund superstar, with the 20-year-old also an adaptable presence, much like the Englishman.

With Le Bris also well-known for getting plenty out of youngsters at his disposal, with Chris Rigg turned into a first-team starter last season, it does feel as if Tuterov could be the next shouted-about name ready to leave an impression on the senior ranks.

Patience will have to be exercised here, but Sunderland’s glittering track record does seem to suggest that Tuterov could be the next gem ready to pull on the number 10 jersey, living up to Bellingham’s insane hype in the process.
