£4m Rangers star won't be truly elite until he starts playing like Aasgaard

The first international break of the 2025/26 campaign may have come at the perfect time for Glasgow Rangers head coach Russell Martin after a difficult start to the season.

Four draws in four Scottish Premiership matches and a 9-1 loss on aggregate in the Champions League play-off qualifying round has already put pressure on the Ibrox boss.

Some supporters made their frustrations clear after the 6-0 loss in Belgium, placing a banner at Ibrox asking for Martin to be sacked.

A two-week break for international games has provided Martin with time to clear his head and reassess how he wants to tackle matches, tactically, in the coming weeks to ensure that his side picks up enough results to get fans back onside.

The international break has also been a welcome distraction for some of the players, who have been able to get away from the toxicity around Ibrox, brought on by the performances and results, to play for their countries.

Nicolas Raskin and Derek Cornelius scored for Belgium and Canada, respectively, but it was Thelo Aasgaard who grabbed the headlines with his immense display.

Thelo Aasgaard showed Rangers supporters what he is about

Rangers signed the attacking midfielder from Luton Town on a permanent deal earlier this summer to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch.

They have not seen too much of him on the pitch yet, though, because the 23-year-old star missed the start of the season through injury, which is why he has only played two games in the Premiership so far.

Aasgard’s performance off the bench for Norway against Moldova on Tuesday night, however, shows the kind of quality that supporters can look forward to seeing from him once he is at his best at Ibrox.

As you can see in the table above, the Norwegian sensation produced an unbelievable cameo for his country with four goals in just 26 minutes as part of an 11-1 win against Moldova.

Aasgaard now has five goals in three caps for Norway. He also scored 12 goals in 31 appearances for Wigan Athletic last season before his move to Luton in January, per Transfermarkt, which shows that the youngster can offer a big threat as a goalscorer.

Hopefully, his incredible four-goal haul against Moldova will provide him with the confidence that he needs to return to Rangers and hit the ground running on the other side of the international break against Hearts on Saturday.

Whilst Aasgaard needs to start showing what he is capable of at Ibrox, there is another Light Blues star who could become an elite player for the club if he learns a thing or two from the Norwegian midfielder.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rangers signed Oliver Antman from Go Ahead Eagles in a deal worth up to £4m this summer to bolster their options out wide, and he could become a truly elite figure for Martin’s side if he can become a goalscorer as potent as Aasgaard is.

Why Oliver Antman needs to be more like Thelo Aasgaard

When you think of the best wingers in the world, your mind likely goes to Mohamed Salah, Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Bukayo Saka, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and others like them.

What do they all have in common? They can all score goals as well as assist them. They are not one-dimensional players who can be silenced by cutting off their threat as either a scorer or a creator, because they can be both.

A month into his career at Ibrox, Antman has been too one-dimensional for Rangers on the right wing. If the opposition find a way to shut down his threat from crosses or passes, he does not make much of an impact on the game.

The Finland international showcased his creative quality on his debut for the club against Viktoria Plzen in a Champions League qualifier at the start of August, as he delivered a top-quality ball into box for Djeidi Gassama to score.

Antman, who reporter Chris Jack claimed has “feet like drumsticks”, was signed by the Scottish giants after providing a huge threat as a creator from the right flank during his time with Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie during the 2024/25 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the 24-year-old attacker was an exceptional creator for the Dutch side, but did not provide goals on a regular basis, with just six strikes in 28 matches.

In order for Antman to take the next step in his career, and to become an elite player for Rangers, he must learn from Aasgaard’s ability to find space and chances inside the box to become a threat as a scorer.

One way for the Finnish star to do that could be to operate on the left flank. Go back to the names listed among the best wingers in the world, they are all predominantly play as inverted wingers, cutting in on their favoured foot.

Meanwhile, Antman has played on the right wing as a right-footed player. Playing him on the left would provide him with the option to cut infield to take shots with his stronger foot, whilst still being able to go down the line to put crosses in with his left foot, or by chopping back to cross with his right.

This subtle, but potentially game-changing, tactical change, coupled with a bit of learning from Aasgaard on how and when to arrive in the box at right time, could help Antman to become a complete forward who can consistently impact games with goals and assists.

Rangers must rue losing this “incredible” star who would now be their most valuable player.

ByDan Emery Sep 6, 2025

At this moment in time, the Finnish whiz is too predictable and easy to mark out of games, hence why he has zero goals and zero assists in his last six games for the club, which is why these tactical and player mindset changes need to be made to make him truly elite.

Worse than Maeda: Rodgers must drop Celtic star who lost the ball 13x

Another European away trip ends in frustration for Celtic, with Brendan Rodgers’ side held to a 1-1 draw by Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday evening to mark a mixed start to their latest Europa League adventure.

There were no doubt echoes of Kairat about the first-half in Belgrade, with the visitors left with little to show for their dominance in possession, having also been forced to rely on the brilliance of Kasper Schmeichel to keep the home side at bay.

A rather uneventful opening 45 – excluding that stunning save from the veteran Dane – was subsequently followed by a far more exciting second period, with the introduction of summer signing, Kelechi Iheanacho, finally sparking the Hoops into life.

It was to be the experienced Nigerian who ultimately broke the deadlock for the Scottish champions with a tidy close range finish, albeit with another man of Premier League years past – Marko Arnautovic – reducing the arrears just ten minutes later.

There was to be no further breakthrough from either side, ensuring Rodgers will be left to ponder what he could have done differently following a Jekyll and Hyde display from his Glasgow outfit.

Iheanacho provides solution to Maeda problem

It isn’t exactly a new opinion to suggest that Celtic’s summer business was far from perfect. Indeed, even the positives – such as the arrival of Sebastian Tounekti – need to be scrutinised, particularly amid the stockpiling of talent on the left flank.

With the injured Jota already onboard, Rodgers and co have since added two players who predominantly operate off the left, in the form of Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Tounekti, the latter of whom opened his account against Partick Thistle at the weekend.

Such reinforcements have left the Celtic boss with a headache to solve regarding last season’s talisman, Daizen Maeda, with the 33-goal star subsequently relocated into the vacant number nine berth on Wednesday night.

While no stranger to that role, the Japanese speedster almost had an air of a player who didn’t want to be there, having regularly been too slow in getting himself back onside. In all, he made just seven touches, and failed to win a single duel, as per Sofascore, in what was a simply anonymous 45-minute outing.

For all the talk of desperation surrounding the addition of Iheanacho, the one-time Leicester City looked like an instant upgrade following his entrance at the break, having linked play so effectively again, as he did on Sunday.

Despite seeing two efforts denied by the impressive figure of Matheus in the opposing goal, the 28-year-old’s eventual goal was one of pure poise and composure, expertly receiving Benjamin Nygren’s pass before curling the ball home with ease.

It is still early days, although the free transfer signing already looks like he could have forced his way into Rodgers’ starting lineup. Elsewhere, however, his new teammate Reo Hatate looks to have played his way out of it…

One Celtic star's dismal display in numbers

There’s no getting away from what was a forgettable performance from Maeda in Belgrade, albeit with the makeshift striker getting little in the way of support from his teammates, with chances at a premium in that uninspiring first half.

Among those toiling behind him was his compatriot, Hatate, with the 27-year-old looking bizarrely lax and laboured in the centre of the park, prior to his withdrawal just after the hour mark.

As ever, there was purpose to Callum McGregor’s play at the base of the midfield, while new man Nygren was an effective link between that central trio and the attacking unit, creating three ‘big chances’ and completing 100% of his attempted dribbles.

The elegant Swede was the creative hub in the second half, in particular, although on the opposite side, Hatate’s influence continued to wane, having been unable to provide a single key pass all night.

Not only did he lose 50% of his total duels, but the former Kawasaki Frontale star also lost possession on 13 occasions, at a rate of once every 3.3 touches.

Wasteful and slack on the ball, it was no surprise to see Celtic’s number 41 eventually hooked heading into the closing stages, with perhaps now the time for Rodgers to hand a regular role to Arne Engels – or Paulo Bernardo – instead in that central role.

Yes, as he showcased with his August stunner against Aberdeen, Hatate is capable of a magic moment when at his best. Sadly, however, those moments appear to now be few and far between, with just one goal and no assists from his eight outings in 2025/26 thus far.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

With Engels and Bernardo waiting in the wings, it begs the question as to why Rodgers hasn’t been tempted to alter that midfield pecking order in recent weeks. Perhaps after last night’s showing, that situation might well have changed…

It's not Kudus: Spurs sensation could become their best forward since Kane

Tottenham Hotspur’s ability to pull top-level talent in the transfer market has been reflected by their move to land Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United this summer.

The Ghanaian has been a key threat in the Premier League over the last couple of years, scoring 13 times in his two seasons across the capital with the Hammers.

Before moving to join the Lilywhites, the 25-year-old was on the radar of the likes of Chelsea and Bayern Munich – but decided in favour of a move to join Thomas Frank’s men.

He’s already made an immediate impact with his new side, registering two assists in his first four Premier League outings – the most of any player in the first-team squad.

Whilst it’s still early days for Kudus in his career in North London, he has already adhered himself to the fanbase – potentially benefitting from one player’s talents had the board kept hold of him.

Harry Kane’s record-breaking spell as a Spurs player

No Spurs fan would have ever expected Harry Kane to have had the impact he did in North London after making his senior debut for the club as a youngster back in August 2011.

He would have to wait three years for his first start, but once he forced himself into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans, there was no looking back for the former academy star.

Fast-forward to the present day, the 32-year-old managed to rack up 280 goals for the Lilywhites in his 435 appearances – scoring over 30 goals in 50% of his decade-long spell in the first-team.

Such a record makes him the club’s highest-ever goalscorer, whilst also sitting second in the Premier League’s all-time scoring chart – with only Alan Shearer scoring more at present.

However, despite his phenomenal nouse for scoring goals, he was unable to catapult the Lilywhites to any silverware, which led to his transfer to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 for £82m.

Since joining the Bundesliga outfit, the Englishman has netted 93 goals in his 102 outings, further highlighting his talent in attacking areas – undoubtedly going down as one of the best English forwards in football history.

His move away from North London has left a huge void over the last couple of seasons, with new boss Frank hoping that one player can step up to the plate over the next couple of campaigns.

The Spurs player who could be their best forward since Kane

Whilst Kane was more often the man to finish off chances for Spurs, he also struck up an incredible partnership with Heung-min Son in the final third over countless years.

The Englishman and the South Korean linked up for 47 Premier League goals throughout their time together, sitting at the top for the most goals created by a single two-player partnership in Premier League history.

However, the latter of the pair also departed the Lilywhites this summer, joining LAFC in a £20m transfer – leaving yet another huge hole for Frank to fill in his first year at the helm.

As a result, the hierarchy delved into the transfer market and completed the £52m signing of forward Xavi Simons from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

The 22-year-old can either operate in a central role behind the striker or off the left-hand side, subsequently offering the Dane a versatile option within attacking areas.

The Dutchman has arrived in England with huge expectations, and understandably so given his record in Germany last campaign, with the youngster registering 19 goal contributions in just 33 outings.

Whilst he’s yet to notch his first goal for the Lilywhites, he’s already caught the eye in his first two outings – even registering an assist for Pape Matar Sarr in the 3-0 triumph over West Ham United last weekend.

Simons, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by one analyst, has already racked up over 160 senior appearances despite his tender age, with his underlying stats from his first handful of Spurs games already catching the eye.

The Dutchman has already created three chances in his first two outings – the most of any Lilywhites player in that time – showcasing the creative spark he possesses despite his youthful age.

He’s also completed 75% of the dribbles he’s attempted, whilst winning three fouls – tallies which highlight the danger he has already caused to the opposition during his bedding-in period.

Simons’ tally of 1.5 shots per 90 also highlights he’s more than capable of going alone when needed, but he just needs his first goal in English football to help kickstart his spell under Frank.

£52m may appear to be a mammoth investment by the board, but it’s one that could be worthwhile if he can continue producing the calibre of performances he has in the early stages of his Spurs career.

Given the levels produced by Kane in North London, he certainly has a long way to go before getting near his cult hero status, but there’s no disputing he has bags of time on his hands.

If he can carry on his superb start in England, there’s no reason why he can’t be the club’s best attacker since the English international – potentially able to write a new history for the side under Frank’s guidance.

Arsenal set Real Madrid price tag after blunt Saliba reply to new contract offer

Arsenal are trying to lock star defender William Saliba down with a brand-new contract, but Andrea Berta is forced to contend with the temptation of a move to Real Madrid.

Mikel Arteta dealt William Saliba concern as Arsenal contract runs down

As things stand, the Frenchman’s deal is set to expire in 2027, and as each day passes, Mikel Arteta grows more and more vulnerable to losing his pivotal centre-back who’s formed a stellar partnership with Gabriel.

Saliba and the Brazilian have been a vital ingredient of Arsenal’s trophy challenges since the beginning of 2022/2023, with the pair often praised for being the best central defensive pairing in Europe.

It is testament to summer signing Cristhian Mosquera, who’s seriously impressed in Saliba’s absence, that Arteta’s side have conceded just once in five total games so far this term.

The 24-year-old is pushing to play in Arsenal’s vital Premier League clash against Man City on Sunday, according to Arteta in his pre-match press conference, but behind-the-scenes, tying Saliba down isn’t exactly plain sailing.

While there is optimism among reliable media sources that Saliba could eventually commit his future to Arsenal, with talks currently ongoing (Fabrizio Romano), some reports suggest that negotiations are moving at a slow pace (Football Insider).

This could give Real hope of signing the ex-Saint-Etienne star in 2026, with an update now coming to light on the situation courtesy of El Desmarque.

Arsenal set William Saliba price tag after blunt response to new contract offer

As per the outlet, Saliba has already rejected the Gunners’ first offer of a contract renewal, and El Desmarque report that the Bernabeu is a realistic destination for him.

France's William Saliba and Aurelien Tchouameni in action with Croatia'sMartinBaturinaand Franjo Ivanovic

According to their information, Saliba is prepared to leave Arsenal amid Real’s serious interest, and Xabi Alonso’s side view him as a “dream” signing.

Arsenal have also set a “high” price tag for the France international at around £70 million, which can be considered lofty when factoring in he’ll have just one season remaining on his deal by next summer.

Real are aiming to make a splash through the signing of superstar defenders next year. It apparently hasn’t been ruled out that they could sign both Saliba and Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate, which would be quite the statement of intent from Florentino Perez.

Arsenal simply cannot lose William Saliba

Saliba’s importance extends beyond raw defending. He is comfortable in possession, rarely flustered and plays a huge role in starting Arsenal’s build-up from the back.

Real’s interest is no surprise — he’s exactly the level of player they’re regularly target. However, Arsenal are no longer in a position where they can be bullied into selling their stars. With the team now competing consistently at the top, losing Saliba would send the wrong message and tear a significant hole in Arteta’s carefully constructed long-term project.

Signing a replacement for Saliba would be Berta’s most almighty task yet, and it is something they’ll be looking to avoid at every cost.

Shades of Isak: West Ham consider last-gasp move for "monster" £29m striker

After months of stories, reports, and rumours, silly season is finally coming to an end, and West Ham United haven’t done half bad.

Fans were understandably worried for a period, but a late flurry, which has seen the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Soungoutou Magassa, has given them reason to be optimistic.

Moreover, following his celebration against Nottingham Forest, it now looks like Lucas Paqueta will be staying in East London for a little while longer.

One superstar who is moving today is Alexander Isak, and while he’s not coming to the London Stadium, West Ham have been linked with a striker who’s won comparisons to him.

West Ham target Isak-esque goalscorer

According to a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, West Ham are now interested in Victor Boniface.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report has revealed that the Hammers are considering a late move for the Bayer Leverkusen star, who remains on the market following his failed medical with AC Milan earlier this summer.

The Italian side were set to sign the Nigerian striker in a deal that would have seen them pay a €5m loan fee and then a €24m buy clause, which comes to around £25m in total.

There is certainly some risk in signing Boniface, but he has proven himself to be a lethal striker in the past and has even been compared to Isak.

How Boniface compares to Isak

While there are some obvious similarities between Boniface and Isak, from their positions to their age range and ability to run in behind players, it goes deeper than that.

According to FBref, the Swedish goalscorer has been the third most similar forward to the Nigerian in Europe’s top-five leagues across the last 365 days.

You can gain a better understanding of how this conclusion was reached by taking a look under the hood, at the underlying numbers in which they rank closely.

In other words, the 24-year-old is a serious goal threat and not just that, but someone who can drag the ball into dangerous areas on his own when needed.

Victor Boniface for Bayer Leverkusen.

However, while having so many statistical similarities to someone as unbelievably talented as Isak is more than encouraging, all that matters for a forward is scoring goals, and thankfully, he has no issue doing so.

For example, in 62 appearances for Leverkusen, totalling 3496 minutes, the “absolute monster” of a striker, as dubbed by respected analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 32 goals and provided 12 assists.

That means he’s averaged a goal involvement every 1.40 games, or every 79.45 minutes, since joining the German outfit, which is a world-class rate of return.

Ultimately, even though there is an element of risk in the deal, West Ham should do what they can to bring in Boniface before the window shuts at 7pm.

Gill had back spasms during RR game, but expects to play SRH on Friday

Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill was substituted out after their innings in the defeat to Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Monday night after “a little back spasm”, but hopes to be fit for their home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday. He made 84 off 50 balls opening the batting as GT posted 209 for 4 in Jaipur, but did not take the field for the second innings. He was replaced by Ishant Sharma, who was brought on as an Impact Player, while vice-captain Rashid Khan took over captaincy duties. GT fell to a heavy defeat, with teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi hitting a stunning 35-ball hundred.Gill explained after the game that he was advised not to take the field by GT’s medical team as a precautionary move, with a short turnaround before their next match. “I just felt a little back spasm in my back, and we have a game a couple of days after from this,” Gill said before the post-match presentation. “The physio said [that we] didn’t want to take a chance.”Related

Leach, Pretorius give Somerset upper hand on green deck

England spinner sparks Essex collapse before Noah Thain digs in

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay02-May-2025Somerset 9 for 1 trail Essex 206 (Pretorius 3-24, Leach 3-35) by 197 runsJack Leach took centre stage in a dramatic Essex batting collapse on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship Division One match with Somerset at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton. The visitors looked to be coping well with a green pitch when progressing to 115 for 2 early in the afternoon session, having lost what looked likely to prove an important toss. But England left-arm spinner Leach found plenty of turn from the River End and claimed three wickets in quick succession to help reduce Essex to 155 for 7 at tea. They were eventually bowled out for 206, Noah Thain top-scoring with 41. Leach finished with 3 for 35 from 30 accurate overs, while seamer Migael Pretorius returned 3 for 24. By the close, Somerset had replied with 9 for 1, losing Archie Vaughan for a duck. All eyes were on potential seam movement when Essex began their innings on a wicket barely distinguishable in colour to the outfield. But, while Somerset’s opening bowlers beat the bat on occasions, there was no sign of extravagant bounce or deviation off the surface.Dean Elgar and Paul Walter took the total to 40 in the 14th over before the latter, on 22, miscued an intended straight drive off Craig Overton and chipped a simple catch to Josh Davey at mid-on.Leach was introduced as early as the 21st over with the total on 55. He immediately began to cause problems operating around the wicket and turning the ball sharply at times away from the right-handers.Elgar had progressed patiently to 30 when edging Pretorius just short of Overton at second slip. The following delivery crashed into the left-hander’s pads moving across his stumps and resulted in a successful lbw appeal to make the score 66 for 2.Still there was no sign of the carnage ahead as Essex went in to lunch on 81 for 2, with Tom Westley on 13 and Jordan Cox 10. A further 34 runs were added before Davey made what proved a key breakthrough in the 44th over, his first after lunch, Westley edging to Overton at second slip and departing for 20.The seamer quickly followed up by sending back Cox for 26, comfortably caught by Vaughan at midwicket off a mishit to make it 118 for 4. It was then that Leach began to weave his spell, maintaining an exemplary line and length to send back Michael Pepper, Matt Critchley and Simon Harmer in the space of four overs.Pepper edged low to Overton at second slip to fall without scoring, while Critchley was lbw pushing forward and Harmer also leg-before defending off the back foot. At 136 for 7, Essex had lost five wickets for the addition of only 21 runs.Thain was unbeaten on 26 at tea and doing his best to stem the slide. His solid resistance continued into the final session, aided by Sam Cook, dropped on 8 by Tom Abell, deputising at second slip for Overton who was temporarily off the field, with Pretorius the unlucky bowler.Somerset took the second new ball at 178 for 7, Pretorius striking in the first over with it as Cook, still on 8, top-edged a pull shot to Vaughan at fine leg. It was an overdue change of luck for the South African, who had beaten the bat on numerous occasions. His next over saw the end of Thain’s impressive contribution, caught behind driving, having battled away for 112 balls.Last man Jamie Porter contributed a useful 19 before being bowled by Overton, leaving Somerset with a tricky five overs to bat at the end of a day played in warm sunshine. The fifth ball, sent down by Cook, saw Vaughan edge a catch to third slip.Offspinner Harmer opened the bowling at the end Leach exploited to such good effect and will be looking to play an equally important role tomorrow.

Nottingham Forest eyed up "unbelievable" 3-4-2-1 manager before Ange move

Nottingham Forest admire an “unbelievable” Premier League manager, with Evangelos Marinakis looking to “move quickly” to appoint a replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nuno sacked after just three Premier League games

Trouble has been brewing at The City Ground for quite some time now, with Nuno not helping the situation when he revealed his relationship with Marinakis was no longer the same as it was in the 2024-25 campaign, saying: “I always had a very good relationship with the owner – last season we were very close and spoke on a daily basis. This season it is not so well,”

“Our relationship has changed and we are not as close. Everybody at the club should be together, but this is not the reality.”

The 51-year-old initially held onto his job, but Forest announced the decision to sack their manager on Monday night, with Marinakis sacking the Portuguese coach off the back of a 3-0 defeat at home against West Ham United.

It is a controversial decision to sack the manager who led the Tricky Trees to Europe for the first time in 30 years, which makes it even more crucial for Marinakis to get the next appointment right, with Ange Postecoglou set to be appointed.

Taking to X, Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett revealed Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is one of the managers “admired” by the Nottingham Forest hierarchy, but Postecoglou appears to be the man set to take Forest forward.

Glasner could have been "unbelievable" appointment

It seems likely the Austrian, who plays a 3-4-2-1 system, would’ve been a popular appointment among the Forest fans, given what he has achieved since arriving at Crystal Palace, most notably leading the Eagles to FA Cup glory last season.

However, the 51-year-old would’ve been a controversial appointment from a Palace point of view, given the fact Forest replaced Glasner’s side in the Europa League this season, due to issues surrounding multi-club ownership.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has praised the “unbelievable” job Glasner has done, while also adding: “He loves football, always believes we can win and he instills that in his players.”

However, Postecoglou may also be an exciting appointment, given that the Australian is well-known for an attacking style of play, with the 60-year-old leading Tottenham Hotspur to Europa League glory last season.
