Manchester United are rallying themselves to try and enjoy an improved Premier League season but have now pulled out of a huge deal for a priority transfer target.
Ruben Amorim speaks ahead of Manchester United vs Arsenal
The English top-flight has returned in all its glory and there won’t be a single eye in the footballing world that isn’t paying attention to Manchester United’s league opener against Arsenal on Sunday.
Ahead of the mouthwatering clash at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim has confirmed that new Red Devil Benjamin Sesko is ready to start despite only having limited time on the training field in the lead-up to the clash.
RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.
“I can see Ben being a striker at this club for many years. That is why we paid a lot of money. He didn’t have a lot of time (on the training field), but physically, he is ready. That is a big component in our league. He’s ready to play, and we’ll see if he starts.”
Coming as a major boost, his arrival will form one major part of trying to reshape Manchester United’s fortunes, but who else could be set to join the Amorim revolution?
Reports suggest Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller is on the Red Devils’ shortlist and carries an impressive profile that has also attracted Liverpool to his situation.
INEOS make £320m: AI predicts players Manchester United will sell this summer
It could be a busy summer ahead of Ruben Amorim’s first full season in charge.

In the long-term, Harry Kane could also be set for a surprise transfer to Old Trafford amid a £56 million release clause in his Bayern Munich contract that is set to activate next summer.
INEOS clearly plan to push the boat out across their reign and were prepared to shatter Manchester United’s transfer record amid recent developments.
Manchester United pull out of Carlos Baleba move
According to Graeme Bailey speaking to United in Focus this week, Manchester United were set to submit a record bid for Brighton & Hove Albion star Carlos Baleba. However, despite designs on smashing the £89 million fee paid for Paul Pogba, David Ornstein has now revealed INEOS are “not planning to proceed with Carlos Baleba move this summer”.
There was “direct contact between clubs but Brighton clear – not for sale”, leading the Red Devils to look elsewhere despite the midfielder’s own keeness to move.
Carlos Baleba 2024-25 stats (timeless)
Last term, Baleba registered four goals and two assists in 40 appearances across all competitions. His personal ambitions match recent interest from high places amid claims he wants to win the Ballon D’or after Rodri’s success, given the pair feature in similar positions.
Brighton were apparently set to hold out for £115 million, and with time ticking before the window closes, Manchester United appear to have moved on to other targets with the belief a stalling deal would deprive Amorim of midfield reinforcements before the deadline.

Jack Edwards took 5 for 41 in each innings as NSW defeated WA with just 13 balls left in the match

Jack Edwards was the hero with the ball•Getty Images
Jack Edwards has bowled New South Wales to a thrilling Sheffield Shield win over Western Australia, taking the final wicket with 13 balls to spare.Edwards claimed his second five-wicket haul of the match on Monday to help the Blues win by an innings and 68 runs, with Western Australia all out for 184.But while the margin may have sounded as if Edwards had helped the Blues to a comprehensive victory, it was anything but. Western Australia entered the final session with six wickets in hand, looking likely to hold on for a draw at the SCG.But when Edwards inspired a collapse of 4 for 7, the visitors looked spent with almost 21 overs to survive and only two wickets in hand.Edwards then had Brody Couch caught behind with 9.1 overs left, leaving Lance Morris and Corey Rocchiccioli with 53 balls to face. The two tail-enders looked likely to effect Western Australia’s great escape, before Rocchiccioli edged Edwards to second slip just before 6pm on the final day to concede defeat.NSW’s win capped a near perfect performance from Edwards as captain, with the seamer taking 5 for 41 with both innings.”Great win, especially with the rain taking time out of the game [on day two],” Edwards said. “I feel like I’ve been bowling well this year, and it’s nice to get the reward for it.”It was just about sticking at it. I thought we just had to make them play a bit more. When we did that, we were creating chances.”After Kurtis Patterson’s unbeaten 167 allowed NSW to declare at 463 for 9 overnight and with a lead of 252, wickets fell in clumps on the final day.Jackson Bird removed Sam Whiteman and Jayden Goodwin in the first session to move to 500 first-class wickets.Tanveer Sangha also claimed the crucial wicket of Cameron Bancroft on 48, skidding one on and trapping the opener lbw in the middle session. A furious Bancroft threw his gloves to the ground in frustration as he crossed the boundary rope, having appeared the man most likely to save Western Australia.Sangha also spun a ball across Hilton Cartwright to draw his edge and have him caught at slip seven overs later. But Western Australia were still able to spend the majority of the day looking likely to hold on, before Edwards’ late heroics.NSW had started the day in last place on the ladder headed into the BBL break, but now sit third. Western Australia are fourth.
After being dropped from the national side last November, she has been piling on the runs in the domestic circuit

Shafali Verma has been churning out runs with remarkable consistency in domestic cricket as she tries to make a comeback to the national side after being dropped from India’s white-ball squads last November. With a home ODI World Cup scheduled later this year, among other things, Shafali said that she has been working on playing long innings.Shafali is currently taking part in the Senior Women’s One-Day Challenger Trophy in Chennai, where she has led Team A to the final. She is the leading scorer in the competition after accumulating 388 runs in four matches at an average of 97.00 and a strike rate of 146.96. This includes scores of 115 off 70 balls, 87 off 58, 95 off 65 and 91 off 71.”Feeling very good,” Shafali said after smashing a hundred at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday. “First of all, the team is winning, that is a very big thing. So yes, all I am thinking is how much more I can build on and play [the] long innings.Related

“As a player, it is our job to give our best for the team and fulfill the needs. That is what I try, to contribute and help the team win. And yes, if I play long innings, as you can see, team is winning.”Shafali is coming off a terrific run at the domestic one-day trophy played in December, where she scored 527 runs at an average of 75.28 and a strike rate of 152.31 for Haryana. This was after she was dropped from the ODI squad for the Australia tour, having scored only 108 runs in six ODIs at an average of 18.00 last year. Subsequently, she was also left out of the ODIs against West Indies and the ongoing series against Ireland. In her absence, opener Pratika Rawal has grabbed the opportunity, hitting 290 runs in five matches at an average of 58.Shafali conceded that she hasn’t changed her approach or technique heading into the domestic tournaments, but has focused on converting her starts and building her innings. She also revealed that the message from the India team management was clear: “Believe in your batting”.”As you all know, my starts are good but building an innings has been an issue,” Shafali said. “But now, I am focusing on how to get those singles, how to build the innings, how to do well for the team. That is what I am trying to do.Shafali Verma managed just 108 runs in six ODIs in 2024•ICC/Getty Images
“I think this is my job, to do well for the team. I know I am dropped from the [India] team, but it is my job to play well for the team [whichever I play for]. And now, my focus is on the Challengers and I want to do well in the final and win the trophy [on Wednesday].”They [India team management] just said ‘believe in your batting, believe in your strength’. They are very chill, very good. They are backing me, so yes. Every innings starts from zero. For the final also, the innings will begin on zero and, as I know, the team needs me a lot in the batting. So that is what I am trying, to try and build the innings well and win the trophy.”Both the one-day Challenger Trophy and the Ireland series will conclude on Wednesday with the focus soon shifting to WPL 2025. As of now, India’s next international assignment will be the tour of England in June-July. Will Shafali’s glorious domestic run be enough to get her back into the scheme of things when the white-ball squads for that series are picked?
Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a slow start to the new season, but may be about to ignite their campaign as they close in on another signing.
Wolves prepare to face West Ham United after poor start
Last weekend proved to be another exercise in frustration for Vitor Pereira as his side lost out 1-0 to Bournemouth on the South Coast, leaving his side above only West Ham United in the Premier League table.
Coincidentally, both clubs will face off in the EFL Cup on Tuesday evening, and their man in the dugout will hope his outfit can learn after claiming they failed to follow his tactical instructions during a narrow defeat at the Vitality Stadium.
He told The Mirror: “Football is like this. You can prepare everything but after four minutes we make a pass in the middle, we build in the middle, we lost the ball and they scored. Before (the goal) we had a big chance to score and we missed it.
“I think this goal creates a negative impact in our team because when I watch the game I was feeling that the team was shy on the pitch and with some difficulties to go out of this pressure.”
With signings needed to spruce up his pool of options, Wolves are on the trail of Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado after he fell down the pecking order under Hansi Flick.
Wolves now "closing in" on £26m deal to sign "dominant" star for Pereira

Furthermore, the Old Gold have opened talks to sign Chelsea defender Axel Disasi, which would suggest that adding physicality and solidity are both on the agenda at Molineux, with a deal for Ladislav Krejčí on the verge of being completed to aid that quest.
Rumours are swirling with the business end of the window here and Pereira could now be close to securing some versatility to aid his flailing squad, per recent developments.
Wolves now closing in on Christantus Uche
According to Express & Star reporter Liam Keen on X, Wolves are now closing in on a deal for Getafe midfielder Christantus Uche at around the £17 million mark.
Negotiations continue and there is still work to do before an agreement on personal terms can be reached, but optimism exists internally that he will sign on the dotted line ahead of the close of play.
Labelled “superb” by Jacek Kulig, the versatile star is capable of featuring as a centre-forward or in a variety of midfield roles and started off the season by registering a goal and an assist in Getafe’s recent 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo.
Capped twice by Nigeria, his arrival would be a timely one amid speculation over Jorgen Strand Larsen, though it remains to be seen whether Wolves can finalise a deal over the coming days.
Russell Martin’s turbulent start as Rangers manager plunged into fresh chaos after he dragged his struggling squad into the freezing waters of Loch Lomond for a bizarre team-bonding session. Just 48 hours after another miserable defeat, this time to Hearts, the 39-year-old boss opted for swimming and hiking instead of the usual drills at the training ground.
Sink or swim at the Ibrox
With five Premiership games gone and not a single victory on the board, desperate times have led to desperate measures. On Monday, the under-pressure Gers boss swapped cones and footballs for hiking boots and icy dips. The squad first trekked up Conic Hill before plunging into Loch Lomond’s bone-chilling waters. Martin’s belief? A change of scenery would reset the mood and spark a response.

O'Hara rips into Martin
Rangers icon Barry Ferguson admitted he couldn’t see the point of Martin’s surprise excursion. But it was ex-Tottenham midfielder and current pundit Jamie O’Hara who unleashed the fiercest attack. Speaking on Sky Sports, he slammed: "Rangers is a massive football club and he’s getting it all wrong. He’s in disarray. If I was a player and the manager wanted us to go on something like this to Loch Lomond I'd be absolutely fuming. I’d be like, ‘Is this guy having us on?’ Why would I want to go swimming in Loch Lomond as a team-bonding session?"
O’Hara mocked the idea of climbing hills and braving icy waters as a way to lift spirits and instead suggested: "Give me some golf clubs or get the fishing rods out and go out on a boat for the day. That’s fair enough. But going swimming in a freezing lake? How is that a team-bonding session? That's pain. Then you want me to go and walk up a mountain? Come on. Do me a favour.
"You can’t tell me the lads want to be doing that. Why don't you go and have a round of golf, get some buggies out and have a laugh or a drink in the bar afterwards. But going for a hike is not an activity that you want to be involved in as a football player. Russell Martin's getting it all wrong. That’s not team-bonding, that’s making it worse. If you're organizing a team-bonding session four or five games into a season, you've got serious problems."
Wrong man for the job
O'Hara pulled no punches when assessing Martin’s credentials after a winless start in the Premiership and predicted that his days are numbered at Ibrox.
"He’s going to go. It’s just a matter of time," he said. “I was in Scotland last week and Rangers fans are absolutely fuming. They can’t stand him. What credentials did he have to get the Rangers job in the first place? All right, he did a half-decent job at Southampton – but Rangers is one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“It's like being the Manchester United manager. There’s constant scrutiny and you’ve got to win every week. He ain't been used to winning. When he was at Southampton, they got pumped when they came up into the Premier League. They want to play tippy-tappy football, but that’s not what Rangers need. They need winners, they need leaders, they need fight and spirit. I don't know if Russell Martin's that guy. And I just think it's a huge decision the club’s made and one they've got all wrong.”

Chance against Hibs to turn it around
With the knives out and pressure building by the day, Martin will cling to the hope that Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup tie with Hibs provides a lifeline.
O'Hara added: “The league's over already, right? They can't win the league. So they've got to decide what the objective is now for the season. There’s three competitions left. If he loses in the Cup to Hibs this weekend he’s definitely gone.
“I wouldn't give them any hope in European football, the way they're playing. They're absolutely terrible. I watched one of the European qualifiers and they were absolutely awful. So forget that. Normally when I've watched them in European competitions, they're solid, they have a fight and a spirit. Everyone’s behind them in the home games, there's an atmosphere. Let me tell you, there’s no atmosphere at Rangers at the moment.”

Everton are “looking” to complete the signing of a “brilliant” Premier League defensive midfielder before the end of the summer transfer window.
Moyes delighted after historic Everton victory
The Blues’ first-ever competitive game at their new stadium couldn’t have gone much better, following a 2-0 win against Brighton in the league on Sunday afternoon.
It was a proud day for Everton manager David Moyes, in terms of being in charge of the opening match at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and he loved what he saw from his players and the fans.
“It was everything we wished for. We wanted a positive result today. We had a great atmosphere, a terrific new stadium. What I’m trying to do is hopefully give everybody a team which we can enjoy watching and be proud of. Today came close with their effort, their commitment.
“Some of the quality was very good, but there were other bits of it not so good. But, overall, really pleased with the result. [The atmosphere] was really good. I’ve got to say, we want to build on it. We have to build on it. We have to make sure that we’ve a stadium where, even when the game’s a bit lulled, the supporters keep with us all the way.”
Everton showed enough quality to suggest that they can enjoy a much-improved season in 2025/26, but that doesn’t mean that further signings aren’t needed this summer.
Everton "looking" to sign Yves Bissouma
Speaking to Football Insider, former scout turned transfer insider Mick Brown reports Everton still have Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma on their “radar” before the window closes next Monday.
“He’s a player Moyesy likes so I have no doubt he’s on their radar, especially if Tottenham are planning to listen to offers for him. I saw him play for Brighton against Wolves a couple of years ago and he didn’t put a foot wrong, he was brilliant and it was a really impressive performance. I don’t think he’s shown that since he’s been at Tottenham to be honest.
“Maybe the set-up there doesn’t work for him, I don’t know what it is. But a move somewhere like Everton might be what gets the best out of him, playing under David Moyes in more of a structured system. I think Tottenham have been open to letting him go, so if Everton are interested then there will be a deal to be done.
“They’re not the only side interested in him, but he’s also not the only player they’ve been looking at. If they decide he’s the one they want, it’s a deal that could work out for everybody.”
The £55,000-a-week Bissouma is now a hugely experienced player with 191 Premier League appearances to his name, so he could be a shrewd addition for Everton, with 35-year-old Idrissa Gueye not able to play every week now.
At 28, the Spurs midfielder is at a good age to come straight in as a key man for the Blues, and the fact that he is struggling to be a prominent figure in north London means a move away could appeal.
49ers now eyeing late Rangers swoop to sign £10m+ Premier League forward
The Gers still need reinforcements.
ByTom Cunningham Aug 25, 2025
Bissouma would be a slight risk, considering he has arguably tailed off at Spurs, as Brown alludes to, but if Moyes believes he can get the best out of the Mali international, The Freidkin Group should make a move for him.

Manchester United could be set for a huge season under Ruben Amorim next season, that’s if the additions he’s made to the squad make the desired impact.
Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are two senior additions made to the Red Devils squad, costing a staggering £130m – showcasing the ambition from the hierarchy.
Benjamin Sesko could be the next player to move to Old Trafford, after the club made a £74m bid for the RB Leipzig forward, with the player himself wanting a move to join Amorim’s side over Newcastle United.
Benjamin Sesko
Such additions will likely provide a huge upgrade on the options who were at the club throughout 2024/25, potentially helping them return to their former glory in the Premier League.
Other areas of the pitch will also need strengthening if they are to be successful, with work already being done behind the scenes at the Theatre of Dreams.
The latest on United’s hunt for new additions this summer
Douglas Luiz has reappeared on United’s radar in recent weeks, after originally being touted with a move to join the club in the early stages of the summer window.
The Red Devils have already held talks with Juventus over a potential deal to sign the Brazilian international, but the Italian side are demanding a permanent move rather than a loan deal.
Juventus'DouglasLuizreacts
However, he’s not the only midfielder still on their radar, with Barcelona star Fermin Lopez a player who’s firmly in their sights, according to one Spanish outlet.
Their report claims that the United hierarchy have made the 22-year-old their top target after completing a deal for Sesko between now and the end of the window.
It also states that the hierarchy are willing to fork out a fee in the region of €70m (£60m) to land the Spaniard, who made 46 appearances across all competitions last campaign.
Why United’s latest target would be Amorim’s own Bellingham
Jude Bellingham has been one of Europe’s leading talents over recent years, making huge strides in his career as a professional despite still being just 22 years of age.
He started his career at Birmingham City before a move to Borussia Dortmund, which catapulted him to stardom, subsequently making a move to Real Madrid back in the summer of 2023.
However, his career could’ve been completely different, with the Red Devils previously interested in making a move for the Englishman during the early days of his rise.
The youngster even visited the Red Devils training ground ahead of a potential move, but Bellingham chose a move to Dortmund instead – leaving question marks as to what could’ve been for him in Manchester.
Despite missing out on his signature, the hierarchy have the chance to land their own version of the superstar this window, with current target Lopez labelled a similar player to the Englishman by FBref.
The Barça star has even managed to outperform the Madrid gem in numerous key areas in recent times, showcasing how much of an excellent addition he would be to United this summer.
Lopez, who’s been labelled “sensational” by one analyst, averaged a better goal and assist per 90 record, whilst achieving a higher shot on target accuracy rate – subsequently offering a bigger threat within the final.

He’s also dominated Bellingham in possession, completing more key passes per 90, with more of which going into the final third, handing potential new signing Sesko with the tools he needs to thrive at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard’s talents are further reflected in his tally of take-ons completed and recoveries made, potentially being a perfect box-to-box option in Amorim’s current system.
£60m would be yet another massive statement of intent from the ownership group, as they look to avoid the travesty that occurred across all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign.
If he can move to Old Trafford and replicate his displays in LaLiga, he would be a huge coup and one that could transform into a potential world beater under Amorim’s guidance.
Perfect for Mbeumo & Cunha: Man Utd in talks for another deal after Sesko
Manchester United could be about to make another huge move before the end of the window.
