Italy's quest to find a new manager for the national team continues, with reports from Italy (h/t Calciomercato) claiming that the Italian football federation (FIGC) have shortlisted three legendary former players — Fabio Cannavaro, Gennaro Gattuso, and Daniele De Rossi — to take charge of the Azzurri.

The Italian national team have going through a turbulent time ever since winning the European Championship in 2021, failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Following Italy's harrowing 3-0 defeat to Norway last week, FIGC decided to sack Spalletti from his role, leaving the post vacant. In the days since, Claudio Ranieri was approached, with fans even clamoring for his appointment. However, the former Roma and Leicester City boss turned down the offer. Then, Italy turned to former AC Milan and current Al-Nassr coach Stefano Pioli, but he, too, declined the opportunity.

DID YOU KNOW?

There's still a minor chance that Pioli accepts FIGC's invitation to become Italy's national team manager. Although he remains contracted to Al-Nassr until 2027, he is expected to return to Serie A this summer and sign a three-year deal with Fiorentina, with a verbal agreement already in place. The final decision, though, will rest on the head coach.

It remains to be seen if one of Cannavaro, De Rossi, or Gattuso take up the managerial role and revive the fortunes of the national team. The FIGC will have to move fast, with the next set of international games scheduled to be played in September.

“The ODI series against Ireland gives a good opportunity for batters to focus and to stay longer at the crease and build an innings,” Ann Browne-John, CWI’s lead selector for women’s cricket, said. “A number of the younger players would be transitioning from the shorter format to the 50-over format. They definitely have the potential, and it is important that the policy of identifying young players and developing the talent pool is continued.”The ODI series is part of the Women’s Championship, where West Indies and Ireland are the bottom-most teams. Both teams have played six games each so far; West Indies have one win while Ireland are yet to open their account.”The squad shows a great balance of batting coupled with a variety of bowling styles, which is something that has been lacking in the recent past,” Browne-John said. “Victory here will provide valuable points as the team attempts to move up in the rankings and qualify for the World Cup.”The ODI series from June 26, West Indies’ first ODI cricket since December 2022, will be followed by three T20Is. Carey, Marsh carry Australia home in tense finish at Hagley Oval

The pair combined for a brisk 140-run sixth-wicket partnership to inch Australia closer to victory

Tristan Lavalette11-Mar-2024Alex Carey produced a brilliant knock under pressure to crush New Zealand’s bid for a famous victory as Australia ran down a tough 279 runs in a nerve-jangling chase at Hagley Oval.Australia’s bid to win the second Test and seal the series 2-0 appeared in major trouble at 80 for 5 after the early wicket of Travis Head on day four. But Carey and Mitchell Marsh, who made 80 after being dropped on 28, combined for a brisk 140-run sixth-wicket partnership to inch Australia within 59 runs.Debutant Ben Sears, bowling in the mid-140 kph, flipped the match on its head with the wickets of Marsh and Mitchell Starc on consecutive deliveries to revive New Zealand’s hopes. Carey, however, was unperturbed and finished Australia’s hero with an unbeaten 98.He found calm support through Pat Cummins, who again helped Australia over the line much like he memorably did at Edgbaston in last year’s Ashes. Cummins made 32 and hit the winning boundary at an increasingly gloomy Hagley Oval as the batters embraced mid-pitch.Australia had only run down 279 or more in the fourth innings on 13 previous occasions and only twice since 2006. Only three teams in Test history had scored more runs after the fall of the fifth wicket in a successful fourth-innings chase. The victory capped a hectic period of Test cricket for Australia, who have played 22 Tests in the last 15 months. But they will have a long breather from the format with their next assignment not until next summer against India in a five-Test blockbuster. It was a satisfying triumph for Australia, who before this had only one won series away from home since their last Test tour of New Zealand in 2016.But New Zealand were left bitterly disappointed as their misery against Australia continued having only beaten them once in the past three decades. With their next series against Australia not due until 2026-27, several senior players in the team might never again have a chance to beat their neighbours. After a stirring fightback ever since being bowled out for 162 in their first innings, New Zealand had been in the box seat heading into the fourth day’s play, which was delayed by an hour due to rain.Resuming at 77 for 4 and needing a further 202 runs, Australia’s hopes seemingly rested with Marsh and Head who had combined for 43 runs late on day three after a top-order collapse. In overcast conditions, Marsh went for broke off Tim Southee’s first ball when he hit a bullet to backward point only for Rachin Ravindra to drop a chance. But New Zealand’s agony was short-lived when on the next delivery Head replicated Marsh’s full-blooded stroke and Will Young made no mistake at point. It completed a tough season for Head, who scored just 150 runs in 11 Test innings outside of his match-winning century against West Indies in Adelaide. With Josh Inglis breathing down his neck, Carey’s place in the team had been in the spotlight having only made two half-centuries in his previous 18 innings. Buoyed by a record-equalling 10 dismissals by an Australian wicketkeeper, Carey looked solid as he quickly moved to 19 until he was given out lbw after being trapped on the knee roll by Matt Henry bowling from around the wicket. But Carey was saved by the DRS with ball tracking deeming the ball to be sliding down the leg side. He calmly resumed his innings and kept the runs trickling along, but did have an anxious moment on 37 when Scott Kuggeleijn loudly appealed for caught behind. New Zealand unsuccessfully reviewed as their nerves heightened.Entering the innings on the back of consecutive ducks, Marsh rediscovered his form from the Australian summer as he and Carey notched their half-centuries and Australia reached lunch needing a further 105 runs.A single from Marsh after the interval notched the pair’s century partnership and reduced Australia’s deficit to under a hundred, with batting becoming easier against the older ball. New Zealand’s fading hopes seemingly rested with Henry, who was also seeking a 10-wicket haul, but Marsh continued to counterattack and whacked his bouncer for six.Southee desperately turned to Sears and it proved a masterstroke as he trapped Marsh lbw after hitting him in front of middle and leg. Marsh reviewed in the hope that the ball was sliding down the leg side, but it was upheld in an umpire’s call to spark New Zealand. It was bedlam at a near-capacity Hagley Oval when on his next delivery Sears had Starc hitting straight to square leg. Sears almost completed his hat-trick when Cummins nervously edged in front of second slip. But Sears was then thwarted by inventive batting from Carey and an unruffled Cummins, who continued his knack for ice-cool batting in run chases. Both batters endured some anxious moments as Southee reverted to Henry for one last push but it was in vain. Carey fell short of a deserved century as Cummins sealed victory with a punch through point and he let out a roar in celebration.

Sam Northeast's 335* topples Gooch as Lord's highest first-class innings

Glamorgan captain makes earliest triple-century in county history, but Middlesex dig in in reply

Andrew Miller06-Apr-2024Middlesex 138 for 1 (Stoneman 62*) trail Glamorgan 620 for 3 dec (Northeast 335*, Ingram 132*, Carlson 77, Root 67) by 482 runsGreed is good, as Sam Northeast proved on the second day of the English season at Lord’s. After ransacking Middlesex’s bowlers to the tune of 186 not out on day one, Glamorgan’s captain had insisted that was just the base-camp of his ambitions. For 412 balls across eight-and-three-quarter hours of formidable record-wrecking accumulation, he was utterly true to his word.By the time he marched off in mid-afternoon with 335 not out to his name, out of Glamorgan’s towering total of 620 for 3 declared, Northeast had gone higher than any batter at the equivalent stage of any previous county season, and further into Lord’s own ancient record-books than any man in more than 200 years of precedent. No player had ever scored a Championship triple-hundred at an earlier date than April 6 – the Somerset pairing of Justin Langer in 2007 and James Hildreth in 2009 are the only other players even to have achieved the feat in this cruellest of months. But it was the nudged single through midwicket 34 runs after that milestone that resonated longest and loudest with a knowledgeable Lord’s crowd, as Northeast toppled Graham Gooch’s iconic 333 against India as the highest first-class score at cricket’s most-famous ground.More than 2800 first-class fixtures have taken place at Lord’s since July 1814, when MCC – having twice moved home in their previous 27 years of existence – christened their ultimate venue with a local derby against St John’s Wood, in which neither team made as much as 200 across four innings.Even allowing for a conservative estimate of 25 wickets per first-class match since, that amounts to some 70,000 individual innings in the ground’s history (to date, the equivalent figure across 2537 Tests is 78578 completed innings). Only five of those had previously produced a triple-century, most recently Mark Wagh (sic, of Warwickshire not Australia), in 2001. None, though, have been higher than Northeast’s latest opus. It’s only his latest, of course, because this was not even the highest score of Northeast’s first-class career. That came at Grace Road two seasons ago, against Leicestershire, when he made the ninth-highest individual innings in all of first-class cricket, a mighty (and match-winning) 410 not out against Leicestershire.Sam Northeast takes the plaudits from Colin Ingram after making 335 not out, the highest first-class score at Lord’s•Andrew Miller/ESPNcricinfo Ltd

At the age of 34, and having – like the aforementioned Hildreth – come to be regarded as the best batter of his generation not to have earned an England call-up, this performance is unlikely to change anything on that front. And by the close, it might not count for a whole lot more than Glamorgan’s handy haul of four batting points. Craig Miles’ dismissal of Sam Robson for 43 in the 30th over of Middlesex’s reply turned out to be the only wicket that fell all day, as Mark Stoneman’s doughty half-century confirmed that the Kookaburra ball would prove to be every bit as truculent for the visitors. That scarcely detracted from the quality of Northeast’s performance, however. The day was only four overs old when a punched single into the covers secured him his first ambition, a second career double-hundred, but it was the moment of his 250, secured with a thumped drive over long-off off Ryan Higgins in the final half-hour of the morning, that truly ignited his mood.By then, Northeast had survived a second costly miss at backward point – on 239 this time, compared to 11 on the first morning – but there was no question of treating the moment as a cautionary tale. Each his six sixes poured forth thereafter, three off Higgins as he strayed too full in his arc, and three more off the toiling spinner Josh De Caires, including a monstrous mow across the line and over the extra-long Grandstand boundary, some 80 yards up the hill.De Caires – whose father Mike Atherton had been watching the rain fall at Old Trafford on day one before driving his own parents down to witness their grandson in action – eventually retreated with the bruised figures of 28-0-147-0, including a leg-side long-hop that allowed Northeast to roll his wrists through a pull through backward square and rush on through to that triple-hundred. By then, however, De Caires (and his grandparents) should have had something to cheer with Northeast on 291, only for Jack Davies behind the stumps to make a hash of a regulation stumping. That wasn’t the only lapse as Middlesex’s discipline deserted them amid the onslaught. As the understudy in a hefty fourth-wicket stand of 299, Colin Ingram’s own century was almost as overshadowed as Keith Piper’s at Edgbaston in June 1994, and clean though most of his boundaries were, his late volley of four sixes in 12 balls included a gruesome fumble over the ropes from Henry Brookes at deep third.None of it ultimately mattered, however. As, indeed, might also be said of the remaining two days of a bat-dominant game – though tell that to Stoneman and Max Holden, whose own quests for a statement innings are only just beginning.”It’s a privilege to play here and to break a record like that is just beyond my wildest dreams, to be honest,” Northeast said at the close. “It blew my mind. I got pretty nervous out there at the end, when I was nearing it.”I didn’t really think about it until I was on about 330. A member told me as I was walking out and I sort of forgot about it [the record] – then when I got near, I started thinking about it again.”It’s a special day. The game situation was what I was thinking about at that stage but then a personal milestone like that – I had to make sure I got it.”

Spencer Johnson, Josh Brown lead Brisbane Heat to second BBL title

Heat ended their 11-year title drought to earn redemption with an upset victory over Sixers

Tristan Lavalette24-Jan-2024In-form opener Josh Brown provided the spark before fast bowler Spencer Johnson claimed four wickets as Brisbane Heat earned redemption with an upset victory over Sydney Sixers to capture their second BBL title.Defying a 43,153 crowd at the SCG, where Sixers had won 12 of their last 14 matches, Heat ended their 11-year title drought in dominant fashion.Heat made an imposing 166 for 8 with Brown backing up from his record century against Adelaide Strikers in the Challenger by blasting 53 off 38 balls on a tricky surface. He threatened another outrageous knock before falling in veteran spinner Steve O’Keefe’s last over of his professional career.Heat had been unable to defend 175 in last season’s epic final against Perth Scorchers, but their attack was unstoppable with Johnson finishing with 4 for 26 in the best figures recorded in a BBL final. It was sweet redemption for Heat, who all season have been spurred by the heartbreaking loss to Scorchers. They were the form team through the season and finished on top of the ladder before exacting revenge over Sixers, who had easily won the Qualifier on the Gold Coast. It was a bitter disappointment for powerhouse Sixers, who were hoping to provide O’Keefe with a fairy-tale finish. But their hot late-season form came to a screeching halt as they fell well short of winning a fourth title. After four straight victories, Sixers had entered as favourites and they surprisingly elected to bowl given their expertise at defending on the slow and low SCG surface. But batting proved difficult in overcast and humid conditions with Heat restricted to just 16 runs in the powerplay.Seamer Sean Abbott, named in Australia’s white-ball squads against West Indies, produced menacing late swing and nicked off elevated opener Jimmy Peirson in the first over. All eyes were on Brown, who became the talk of the cricket world after his extraordinary 140 off 57 balls against Adelaide Strikers in the Challenger. It was the third-highest score in BBL history marked by a record 12 sixes. But he was forced to be watchful against the seaming new ball and scored just three runs off his first 10 deliveries.Josh Brown made 53 off 38•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

It was only a matter of time before Brown went for broke and just before the powerplay ended he was fortunate when Ben Dwarshuis missed a tough chance diving forward at deep square. Brown made them pay by smashing the first ball after the powerplay for six and he combined well with close mate and skipper Nathan McSweeney, who pounced on uncharacteristically wayward Sixers bowlingBrown took a liking to Hayden Kerr’s modest pace and clubbed him for consecutive sixes before bringing up his half-century with a gorgeous cover drive. Heat moved into a strong position at 90 for 1 before the reliable Dwarshuis had McSweeney hitting to deep fine leg then O’Keefe trapped Brown lbw in a decision overturned on review.O’Keefe received a standing ovation from the Sixers’ crowd after finishing his typically miserly spell as Heat slowed down considerably after Brown’s dismissal. But they reignited with Max Bryant and Matt Renshaw clubbing 31 runs in the power surge across the 17th and 18th overs as Heat finished strongly. Heat’s momentum continued with the ball when spearhead Michael Neser had opener Daniel Hughes caught at slip in the first over.Johnson was expensive before bowling Jack Edwards off the inside edge on the last ball of the powerplay. Sixers slowed to a crawl as Johnson returned in the ninth over to dismiss opener Josh Phillipe as the home team slumped to 56 for 3.Heat remained wary with memories of last year’s final still fresh with Scorchers 54 for 3 before storming home. But Heat were not to be denied with recalled legspinner Mitchell Swepson producing a fizzing legbreak that befuddled Jordan Silk and he was superbly stumped by Peirson.Sixers’ faint hopes rested with skipper Moises Henriques, who tested positive for Covid-19 earlier in the week but played amid protocols. He had produced remarkable clutch batting just eight days ago against Scorchers in Perth, but his dismissal on the third ball of the power surge effectively ended the contest. It wasn’t long before Heat celebrated with gusto to banish the ghosts of Optus Stadium.

Denly, Bell-Drummond tons shut door on Somerset

Kent overcome second-innings wobble as seasoned pair bat out to secure draw

ECB Reporters Network08-Apr-2024Joe Denly and Daniel Bell-Drummond both hit centuries as Kent survived a mid-morning scare to earn a draw with Somerset in the Vitality County Championship at Canterbury.Kent were in trouble on 10 for 2 and again at 70 for 3, until a partnership of 222 for the fourth wicket took the sting out of the contest and they closed on 290 for 4 declared. Denly beat his partner to three figures, posting 110 from 142 balls including 11 fours and a six, while Bell-Drummond made 107 not out from 169, with 14 fours.Earlier Kasey Aldridge hit 57 before Somerset were bowled out for 403, a lead of 119. Nathan Gilchrist had Kent’s best bowling figures with 3 for 64.The draw was the clear favourite at the start of day four and one “win predictor” app claimed Kent’s chances of winning were precisely zero. Certainly if any side had a realistic chance it was the visitors.Somerset resumed on 374 for 7 and immediately went on the attack. Aldridge, who was on 50 overnight, drove the first ball of the day for four before he was brilliantly caught at midwicket by Jack Leaning off Gilchrist. Bell-Drummond then ran out Ned Leonard for 1, throwing down the stumps from short mid-on.Jake Ball hit his first ball as a Somerset player for a six into the lower Frank Woolley Stand and a fourth batting point was secured when Josh Davey flicked Wes Agar to third man for a single, but the innings was wrapped up when Ball played on to Gilchrist.Somerset clearly felt they had a chance as their batters sprinted for the dressing room and the more nervous home supporters were soon worried. Kent had a minimum 87 overs to navigate and lost both openers in the first five. Ben Compton went in the fourth, strangled by Ball to a delivery he clearly didn’t think he’d hit and Tawanda Muyeye then swatted Davey to Tom Banton at point.Bell-Drummond and Jack Leaning calmed the situation by batting though till lunch, at which point it was 68 for 2.Somerset’s hopes soared again when Leaning perished in the second over of the afternoon, bowled by Lewis Goldsworthy for 32, but Denly joined Bell-Drummond and quickly wiped out the deficit.Denly, who had also scored a century in his last red-ball innings for Kent in the final game of the 2023 season, clearly felt attack was the best form of defence. He raced to 50 from 53 balls, bringing up his half-century when he glanced Lewis Gregory for four.Bell-Drummond passed the same landmark when he took a single from the same bowler and by tea it was 228 for 2. The tension had subsided and as one observer put it: “I’ve never been so delighted to be bored.”Denly’s century arrived with arguably his worst shot of the day, an edge for two off Goldsworthy that flew over the slips and Bell-Drummond’s followed soon afterwards, when he hit Goldsworthy back over his head for four.Denly was out in the final over when he edged Goldsworthy to Matt Renshaw in the slips, but with any hopes of a win for either side long gone, Kent declared at 4.50pm and the teams shook hands on a draw. Somerset take 15 points and Kent 12.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chicharito has come under criticism in Mexico in recent days following the controversial comments he made on social media. The backlash reached the highest political level on Wednesday, when Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the issue during a news conference:

“Chicharito is a very good footballer,” Sheinbaum said. “But when it comes to his views on women… he still has a lot to learn.”

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker did not feature in Chivas' Apertura 2025 opener against León, although he was on the bench.

Over the weekend, he posted: "Don’t be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man. Women, you are failing, you are eradicating masculinity, making society hypersensitive.”

    WHAT CHIVAS SAID

The red and whites issued a statement distancing themselves from the remarks made by the 37-year-old veteran:

"The recent messages posted on social media represent an individual stance and do not reflect the principles and values of our institution. The club has taken the appropriate actions in accordance with its internal regulations. As an institution with a deep sense of social responsibility, we firmly reject any behavior, stance, or expression that reinforces stereotypes which limit the freedom, respect, and full development of all individuals, both within and beyond the realm of sport."
