According to Fotomac, Fenerbahce sporting director, Devin Ozek, will travel to England to hold transfer talks with Tottenham over signing Yves Bissouma for €15m (£13m) in the coming days. However, they reportedly face competition from West Ham and Juventus.

Bissouma was seen as a shrewd acquisition in 2022, and while he has undeniable quality, consistency has been a big issue for the 28-year-old at Tottenham. The loan signing of fellow defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha may limit his game time next season, and with his contract expiring next summer, now may be the time to sell for Spurs.

DID YOU KNOW?

Bissouma, who has played 100 times for Tottenham and scored two goals along the way, was born in the Ivory Coast but moved to Mali when he was 13. He has represented Mali since 2016, earning 45 caps and scoring six goals in the process.

Tottenham may look to sell the former Brighton man as they also have Rodrigo Bentancur as a defensive midfield option. It remains to be seen if Bissouma will leave Spurs or if the north London team will try to keep hold of him.

Rahul on LSG missing the playoffs: 'Injuries and the guys that went away really dented us'

LSG head coach Langer felt dropped catches “really killed us in the end”

Abhimanyu Bose18-May-20244:26

Langer: IPL has same pressure as World Cup

Lucknow Super Giants’ win over Mumbai Indians in their last game of the season was not enough to take them to the playoffs, but it was the kind of performance their captain KL Rahul wanted more of throughout the season.LSG finished on 14 points and occupied sixth spot on table – level with fourth-placed Chennai Super Kings, who still have a game to play on Saturday – but their net run rate of -0.667 was not enough to push them into the top four.”At the beginning of the season, I really felt that we had a strong team and had most bases covered,” Rahul said after the game. “[We had] a couple of injuries obviously, which happens every season to every team, but those injuries and the guys that went away really dented us a little bit, and we didn’t play well enough collectively.Related

Pooran-inspired win fails to take LSG into the playoffs

“When the bowlers had a good game, the batters wouldn’t have a good game. We just didn’t come together as much as we would have wanted to.”Rahul’s comments were echoed by LSG head coach Justin Langer, who said they wanted to try a few new tricks in their last game, and that included opening with Devdutt Padikkal in place of Quinton de Kock. But the Padikkal move did not pay off – he was trapped lbw for a golden duck by Nuwan Thushara – and LSG soon found themselves in a familiar position of losing early wickets. They were 69 for 3 in the tenth over but Nicholas Pooran’s whirlwind 29-ball 75 revivied them. It also helped Rahul accelerate from 29 off 28 to finish on 55 off 41 and took the side to 214.LSG had come into the season with a reputation for defending totals, and they lived up to it the first three times they batted first. However, their bowling took a hit in the second half of the competition, with injuries to key bowlers like Mohsin Khan and Mayank Yadav, and they struggled to defend totals. But in Mumbai, even after the hosts enjoyed an 88-run opening stand in 8.4 overs, their bowling unit came together to effectively blunt the opposition by the 15th over. Naman Dhir, batting at No. 7, gave them a scare with a 28-ball 62 not out, but LSG got through.Langer acknowledged that they missed the services of Mayank and Mohsin, but felt that their sloppy fielding “really killed us in the end”.”I think dropped catches cost us,” Langer said at the post-game press conference. “If you go back to the Delhi game at home, we dropped [Jake] Fraser-McGurk on 17 [24] off Marcus Stoinis. And I think he hit 26 [21] runs off the next over and it really kickstarted his whole season. I saw a stat today that we’ve dropped a lot of catches. We’ve probably got the best fielding coach in the world [Jonty Rhodes] and we dropped some catches. And often it’s [something] as simple as that to [decide] the outcome of the season.”We missed Mayank, he was huge. Mohsin [Khan] had quite a sore back for some of the tournament. But I think dropped catches is the thing that really killed us in the end.”But against MI, LSG held on to all their chances – five catches taken on the field. Krunal Pandya and Ravi Bishnoi took a brilliant catch each to send Dewald Brevis and Suryakumar Yadav, respectively, packing.”Today was a really good performance,” Rahul said. “This is the kind of game we wanted to play more where batters are scoring, and bowlers are doing their job. Unfortunately, we didn’t do that, so we find ourselves here.”

Vinicius Jr warned against 'poisonous fight' with Real Madrid as contract demand could 'backfire' after disappointing season alongside Kylian Mbappe

Athletic Club's sporting director Rafael Alkorta says Vinicius Junior's wage demands may turn into a "poisonous fight" with Real Madrid.

  • Bilbao's sporting director warns Vinicius
  • Claims Real Madrid rewards the deserving
  • Laments winger's form in previous campaign

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Contract talks between Real Madrid and Vinicius have stalled after the Brazilian asked to be the highest-paid player in the squad, which irked the Madrid camp. Bilbao's sporting director and ex-Madrid player Alkorta says the 25-year-old should not test Madrid president Florentino Perez as it may 'backfire', and instead showcase his worthiness to earn rewards.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Vinicius had a significant drop in his form in the 2024-25 campaign, scoring a total of 22 goals and registering 19 assists in 58 games, compared to his 2023-24 season, in which he scored 24 and provided 11 assists in 39 games. Yet, when the contract renewal discussions were held, the winger asked for a salary higher than that of Kylian Mbappe. Alkorta claims the player didn't perform well last season and should not demand a pay rise, while also asserting that the battle for money can turn into a 'poisonous fight', citing the example of Sergio Ramos as one for the Brazilian to learn from.

  • WHAT ALKORTA SAID

Talking to about Vinicius's drop in form after Mbappe's signing, Alkorta said: "He's one of the best in the world, without a doubt. Trying to put pressure on Florentino Perez could backfire. Let's remember what happened with [Sergio] Ramos. Since they moved him to the left wing, I haven't seen him doing well. Playing with Mbappe has been difficult for him. They're young and ambitious, but the environment needs to advise them better. Now is not the time to demand things as if they had had a great season. Last year, changing the system to play him and Mbappe didn't work out entirely. If he focuses on performing at his best, the rest will follow. Real Madrid always reward those who prove their worth on the pitch."

Further explaining how a fight over salary can turn ugly, Alkorta said: "These fights are poisonous. Florentino is affectionate, but he doesn't hesitate to make tough decisions. He needs to be cool. If he has a good season, he'll have the strength to negotiate."

    WHAT NEXT FOR VINICIUS?

Vinicius has attracted significant interest from Saudi Arabia. Reportedly, Al-Ahli have set aside a transfer budget of €300 million (£261m/$351m) for the winger. However, the club are aware that the Brazilian might not switch clubs as of now and are waiting for the right time to make a move. For now, Vinicius has publicly stated he wants to continue with Madrid. The Spanish side are set to face Osasuna in their opening La Liga fixture on August 19.

Rain washes out final day as Middlesex draw with Leicestershire

No final-day play possible in match that was blighted by the weather from the first day

ECB Reporters Network06-May-2024Middlesex 407 for 8 (Robson 162, du Plooy 131) drew with Leicestershire 306 (Handscomb 109, Bamber 4-68) Middlesex’s Vitality County Championship clash with Leicestershire ended in a damp squib of a draw with no play possible on the final day.The hosts led by 101 with two wickets left going into day four, but the rain which washed out the first day’s action returned with a vengeance early on the final morning drenching the outfield.Umpires Paul Baldwin and Robert White gave the ground every chance to recover, calling an early tea at 3:10pm following a 2:35pm inspection. However, further rain in the interim led to the abandonment at 3:25pm..The hosts earn 15 points to Leicestershire’s 12 leaving them both on 68 points, six shy of leaders Sussex. Middlesex however sit above the Foxes in the table on games won.Toby Roland-Jones, Middlesex’s captain, said: “It’s frustrating. We’ve lost two full days of a game we feel we’ve played pretty good cricket in and certainly the only reason we’ve ended up only 100 ahead is through I guess trying to fast forward things a little bit on that third evening.”When you find yourselves here with the way this place can dry and have two days where it hasn’t stopped raining is incredibly rare. Once you get that window here it can be pretty good to go in a couple of hours, so we’ve just been unlucky that’s not been the case.”The most important thing is we can be happy about the way we have gone about our cricket once more. Set 300 to try and hunt and get past, the guys went about it with great skill. That partnership between Robbo (Sam Robson) and Leus (Du Plooy) was obviously great to watch.”

'Let's not judge prematurely' – Thomas Partey signing defended by Villarreal president as ex-Arsenal star booed on debut after being granted bail on rape charges

Villarreal president Fernando Roig has defended Thomas Partey after he was booed by supporters on his debut for the club against Aston Villa.

Partey joined the Spanish side this summer following his departure from Arsenal. The midfielder has been allowed to move to Spain despite being charged with five counts of rape against two women and a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. Partey was granted conditional bail at the start of August in a hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Partey's move to Villarreal has drawn criticism from fans. Cesar Pena, president of the Villarreal supporters’ club in Villafranca de Barros, has criticised the decision to sign the player, while he was booed on his debut for the club in a pre-season friendly against Aston Villa.

WHAT ROIG SAID

The Villarreal president defended Partey after the game and told reporters: "The player is currently undergoing legal proceedings. He maintains his innocence and denies the charges against him. The club upholds the presumption of innocence, and it will be the responsibility of the English courts to clarify the facts. We have spent years demonstrating our values with all kinds of activities.  We respect the presumption of innocence and, of course, condemn any type of violence, whether inside or outside of football. At this moment, Partey is as innocent as the rest of us here. A fundamental right like this must be respected."

Roig also insisted the boos came from Aston Villa supporters, adding: "The English [Aston Villa fans] whistled Partey. Not the Villarreal fans. I wouldn’t like our own fans to whistle at players on our team. We must stand with the team and respect the presumption of innocence. He is not a convicted player. We must be cautious and wait for justice. Let’s not judge prematurely. Thomas has the right to do his job until there is a conviction."

'I understand you have to ask' – Arne Slot responds to Alexander Isak transfer question as Liverpool prepare for fiery Newcastle clash at St James' Park

Arne Slot has remained tight-lipped on Liverpool's chances of signing Newcastle's wantaway striker Alexander Isak ahead of Monday's massive clash.

  • Isak will not be involved for Magpies

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The summer transfer saga rumbles on with Isak refusing to play for Newcastle and Liverpool yet to make another bid for the Sweden international. The offer of £110 million ($148m) came three weeks ago and boss Slot says there is no update to share on the Anfield club making another. But the Dutchman appreciates it remains the hottest topic in football during this transfer window.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Isak wants to move to Anfield but Newcastle are refusing to sanction the transfer. Earlier in the week the Swede issued an emotional statement, hinting at "broken promises", while Newcastle replied with a firm rebuttal. And while this happens the Magpies are playing without their star striker, who scored 25 goals in all competitions last term, and have been unable to find a suitable replacement.

  • WHAT SLOT SAID

Slot said: "What I can tell you is not a lot. And if someone else asks that question, it's going to be the same answer. As I've said so many times and it's been shown on Friday, I could impact the game with who we had on the bench. Federico came in and scored a goal. So it would be much nicer for us to talk about the players who we have but I understand you have to ask the question."

    WHAT NEXT FOR ISAK?

Newcastle are desperate for a resolution to the Isak conundrum as soon as possible. Not only to end the circus which is currently engulfing them but also because they have gone three consecutive Premier League matches without a goal, having bagged 21 goals in the eight prior to that. And it's Liverpool who they face next.
