He is only the second England player to become No. 1 in the ICC men’s T20I rankings for bowlers, after offspinner Graeme Swann more than a decade ago. His lead over Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan in second place is now a 100 ratings points. In ODIs, Babar has gone past Gill to become the No. 1 batter after Gill was rested from India’s ongoing series in South Africa, though neither batter has played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup ended. In the Test rankings, Kane Williamson remains No.1 while Usman Khawaja moves up three places to fourth following Australia’s win against Pakistan in Perth, with another opportunity to close the gap during the Boxing Day Test match.Pat Cummins has moved up a spot to third in the Test bowling rankings, while Nathan Lyon has risen to fifth, Mitchell Starc to eighth, and Josh Hazlewood tenth. Super-subs to make an appearance at ILT20 2024

The league will also feature in-match penalties in its second season

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Dec-2023

The ILT20 has been granted List A T20 status by the ICC•ILT20

The second season of the ILT20 will feature a Super-sub, whose role will mirror that of the Impact Player, used in the IPL in 2023. In the updated playing conditions shared with the six franchises ahead of the second edition, to be played across the UAE from January 19, the league management explained that the Super-sub can be picked from a set of seven names that teams will offer in addition to the playing XI immediately after the toss.Just like in the case of an Impact Player, the replaced player cannot take any further part in the match. While not mandatory, teams can introduce the Super-sub at any point after the first over the match, or even at the start of the second innings. The one key condition set by the ILT20, though, is that a minimum of two UAE players must be part of the playing XI at all times. In its inaugural edition earlier this year, the ILT20 allowed a maximum of nine overseas players in a playing XI along with a minimum of two UAE players. So, if the Super-sub is a UAE player, he can replace a fellow local or an overseas player. In the updated playing conditions, teams will need to submit squads of 18, which will include at least four UAE players along with two Associate overseas players, on the eve of the match. The batting team can bring out a Super-sub at the completion of an over, at the fall of a wicket, or in case a batter retires (injured or voluntarily). In case a Super-sub replaces a retired batter, it will be logged as a wicket. The bowling team can also get the Super-sub at the fall of a wicket, but the player will not be allowed to complete an unfinished over. A Super-sub, though, can bowl his full quota of overs regardless of the number of overs delivered by the player replaced.In-match penalty for slow-over rateJust as the ICC and other major T20 leagues have introduced in-match fielding penalties, the ILT20 has also updated the rules to penalise slow-over rate offences. In case the bowling team is an over behind the cut-off time, then only four fielders will be permitted outside the 30-yard circle; for two overs behind, only three fielders can stand outside the 30-yard circle; for three overs behind, a financial penalty of 5% of match fee per over will be applicable in addition to allowing three fielders in the outfield. The ILT20 received a major boost recently when it became the first franchise T20 league run by an Associate country to be given List A T20 status by the ICC, from the second season itself. Consequently, the tournament statistics will be recorded officially as T20 records.

Fresh off a championship season with Toluca and a standout performance for Mexico at the 2025 Gold Cup, Marcel Ruiz has become one of the most sought-after Liga MX players in this summer’s transfer window. The 24-year-old midfielder is now firmly on the radar of European clubs, with English Championship side Ipswich Town leading the charge.

According to multiple reports, Ipswich have already submitted a formal offer to Deportivo Toluca for the Mexican international. The bid is said to be in the region of $10 million, and the front office is expected to make a decision within the week.

Ruiz, who played in Toluca’s Apertura 2025 opener and is expected to feature against Santos Laguna on July 16, has attracted interest not only from England. French club OGC Nice and Bundesliga outfit Borussia Mönchengladbach have also made inquiries, although Ipswich appear to be furthest along in negotiations.

The midfielder’s stock has risen sharply over the past year. He played a pivotal role in Toluca’s Clausura 2025 title run and later established himself as a starter for during their Gold Cup triumph. While Nice and Gladbach are still in the scouting phase, Ipswich have made their intentions clear with a concrete offer, giving them an edge in the race.

As things stand, Ruiz remains a Toluca player – but his future could be decided very soon. All eyes will be on the club’s response and whether Ruiz becomes the latest Liga MX talent to make the jump across the Atlantic.

Getty Images SportWHAT FRANCISCO SUINAGA AND ANTONIO MOHAMED SAID

"Obviously there’s interest from many clubs, but unless it’s something truly exceptional – something that will help him grow as a person and as a footballer with a future in Europe – he knows it’s a World Cup year and he’s in a team where he runs the midfield. There’s no point in moving just for the sake of it," emphasized Toluca’s sporting director, Francisco Suinaga.

Meanwhile, the team’s head coach, Antonio Mohamed, downplayed the move.

“Marcel doesn’t have anything concrete – neither he nor the club. What matters is that he wants to stay and move only to a significant club. So he’ll surely evaluate what’s best for him and make a decision when something real comes along," he said.

Marcus Rashford told he doesn't 'deserve' Barcelona transfer as Man Utd legend rages over his 'soul-destroying' behaviour at Old Trafford

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Sheringham felt that Rashford speaking about leaving his boyhood club publicly last season was disrespectful to the institution, and he is now hoping that the 27-year-old's proposed move to Barcelona this summer does not materialise.

  • WHAT SHERINGHAM SAID

Speaking to , the Red Devils icon said: "If you assess where Marcus Rashford is at as a professional footballer, you strive as a youngster to get to the very top and play for clubs like Manchester United, and when you’re there, you appreciate it. You don’t throw it away and say you want to leave. I find the whole episode very soul-destroying, compared to the way I was back in the day and how I strove to get the privilege to play for such a huge football club.

"To hear someone talking the way he is talking, saying he wants out – I didn’t like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doing that at Arsenal, I thought it was soul-destroying, and I hope Rashford doesn’t get the move that he’s hankering for. From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that’s a step up that he hasn’t deserved."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Van der Dussen's 104* in vain as Qalandars slump to fifth straight defeat

Rassie van der Dussen’s unbeaten 52-ball 104 went in vain against Peshawar Zalmi as two-time defending champions Lahore Qalandars lost their fifth straight game in the PSL on Sunday. Van der Dussen got to his century in 50 balls, but it wasn’t quite enough as Zalmi won by eight runs with Qalandars chasing for the first time this season.Van der Dussen kept Lahore’s hopes alive in pursuit of Peshawar’s formidable total of 211 for 4 by hitting six sixes and seven fours, but the home team was restricted to 203 for 6.It was the first century in this PSL edition, which van der Dussen reached by pulling Luke Wood for a six over midwicket in the penultimate over. He attacked Zalmi’s quick bowlers, with Naveen-ul-Haq (2 for 50) and Wood (1 for 46) returning expensive figures.Needing 18 off the final over, van der Dussen got the strike for only one ball as Paul Walter kept his nerve and conceded just three runs off the first five balls before Carlos Brathwaite hit a six off the final ball.In the absence of the injured Haris Rauf, Zalmi’s opening pair of Saim Ayub (88) and captain Babar Azam (48) had raised 136 off 86 balls after Qalandars won the toss.Rovman Powell smashed 46 off 20 and hammered young fast bowler Mohammad Imran for 22 in one over. Zalmi’s 211 was the season’s highest total.Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi chipped in with three late wickets for 33 runs, but got little assistance from Zaman Khan, who ended with none for 48.
