Joe Denly props up Kent to keep Division One fate in balance

Relegation-threatened Kent had to endure the ordeal of a final day follow-on before emerging from the rain-ruined LV= Insurance County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton with a potentially valuable draw. The visitors were bowled out for 235 after Somerset had declared their first-innings total on an overnight 404 for 4, Joe Denly making a priceless 73 to guide his side from a perilous 31 for 4. Skipper Tom Abell was the pick of the home bowling attack with 4 for 52, while Lewis Gregory claimed 3 for 49.Trailing by 169 and faced with a possible 41 overs in their second innings, Kent made a better fist of things and were 44 for 2 when the players shook hands at 4.30pm. They took six points from the game and Somerset 12.The home side’s decision to declare on their overnight total robbed Tom Kohler-Cadmore of the chance to break Viv Richards’ record for the fastest first-class century scored by a home player at Taunton – 48 balls against Glamorgan in 1986. The former Yorkshire player was left unbeaten on 68, off 31 deliveries, having struck eight sixes and two fours. But the declaration also offered the hosts their only chance of winning the game. And it soon looked more than an outside bet as Kent lost four wickets in the first 10.3 overs of the day, Gregory claiming three of them from the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End.The experienced allrounder had Ben Compton caught behind pushing forward, Daniel Bell-Drummond pouched at midwicket off a full toss and Jack Leaning leg-before in a seven-over opening spell of 3 for 30 that included four no-balls.Jack Brooks, on his final Somerset appearance, weighed in with the wicket of Tawanda Muyeye, well caught low down by Andy Umeed at second slip and there was clear evidence of help for the seamers in a pitch that retained a tinge of greenness. The number of times Kent batsmen played and missed offered evidence that their own bowling attack had failed to capitalise on favourable first-day conditions after skipper Leaning had won the toss. The visitors’ need for batting points saw them bat positively in adversity, aided by an unusually wayward three overs from Neil Wagner, which cost 32 runs, mainly due to over-pitching. Denly and Harry Finch added 54 in 10.1 overs before the latter nicked a drive off seamer Abell through to wicketkeeper James Rew.Denly was severe on anything around half-volley length, producing a string of well-timed straight and cover drives to move to 40 by lunch, which was taken at 110 for 5.The afternoon session began well for Kent with Marcus O’Riordan providing good support for Denly, who went to a precious half-century off 74 balls, with eight fours. The pair built on the score with increasing confidence and had added 71 in 17.2 overs when O’Riordan fell lbw moving across his stumps to a delivery from Abell.Still it seemed Kent might avoid the follow-on and perhaps notch a batting point until a clatter of wickets with the total on 200 saw Abell gain another leg-before decision to remove Denly before striking again four balls later, bowling Jas Singh for a duck. With no addition to the score, Joey Evison, who had batted well for his 23, pulled a short ball from Wagner to Tom Banton at square leg. Michael Hogan, injured bowling on the first day, walked out with a runner and contributed 19 to a last-wicket stand of 35 with Arafat Bhuiyan before having his stumps scattered by Abell, who had been prevented from bowling by a side problem for much of the season.Tea was taken before Compton and Muyeye launched the Kent follow-on, knowing their side had garnered only one bonus point from the match and desperate to ensure five for the draw. There was greater assurance to their batting in bright sunshine, but with the total on 34 in the 11th over Josh Davey had Muyeye well caught by the diving Abell at third slip for 24. Compton edged a ball from Wagner that left him through to Rew, but by then the draw was inevitable and after one over from occasional spinner Banton the players shook hand.

KL Rahul: 'I know what to do mentally when thrown into the ring'

The India batter on coming back from injury “without any baggage”, his surprise inclusion in the XI against Pakistan, and more

Shashank Kishore12-Sep-20231:33

Uthappa: Rahul’s innings showed how much work he has put in

KL Rahul wasn’t in India’s first XI for their Asia Cup Super Four fixture against Pakistan. But just prior to the toss in Colombo, when he was asked by head coach Rahul Dravid to get ready, there was a slight problem. Knowing he was going to carry drinks, Rahul had left his batting gear and kit back at the hotel. It needed frantic running around from the team manager to get his kit across to the R Premadasa Stadium.”Five minutes before toss, Rahul told me you might have to play because Shreyas [Iyer] has a back spasm,” Rahul told official broadcaster Star Sports after he marked his comeback with his sixth ODI hundred in India’s record win. “I hadn’t brought any of my batting gear, I didn’t get my batting t-shirt, skins, nothing. I’d come like that because I had to just carry drinks (laughs). I just had one T-shirt.”At the last minute, our manager had to run to the hotel to get my stuff. Strange things have happened in my career. This isn’t the first time. It has happened earlier too. Mentally I guess I know what to do when I’m thrown into the ring, I give my best. I’m happy such performances happen [when he’s been faced with such situations]. Maybe it’s also a sign that I don’t have to think too much. I can just go out there and enjoy my cricket. That’s the learning for me.”Related

Rahul was right when he said such things had happened earlier too. One such moment, in 2016, perhaps changed the course of his career. At an IPL game in Rajkot against Gujarat Lions, Rahul wasn’t listed in the XI for Royal Challengers Bangalore at toss time. But ten minutes prior to the start, he was seen rushing off the field to get ready after Mandeep Singh tore the webbing on his left hand. Virat Kohli then asked Suresh Raina, the opposition captain, if they could make a late change.Rahul responded with a gutsy half-century at No. 4. It was the start of a golden run for him that season. From being a non-starter in the XI, Rahul became a regular as RCB made an inspired run to the final. While Kohli made a chart-topping 973 runs, Rahul contributed heavily too: 397 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 146.49. That season dispelled notions of him being a one-format player. In fact, it was also during that season when Rahul made a mark as a wicketkeeper, a role he has grown in over time. He would make his ODI and T20I debut for India soon after the IPL.This ability to bat in the middle and keep wickets makes him a crucial part of India’s ODI World Cup jigsaw. This is why the team management waited on him to return to full fitness five months after he limped off with an injured hamstring. It has taken a lot of work behind the scenes for Rahul to fully get ready before he joined the team last week ahead of the Super Fours.”I’ve had three [tests] done in the last ten days,” Rahul said with a laugh. “Two yo-yo tests, two practice matches, this [batting in the middle in humid conditions] was worse than that [yo-yo tests]. Yeah, for four months I’ve had a lot of juice, and energy. Hopefully, I can carry this, try to recover fast and come back fresh [for the Sri Lanka game].KL Rahul finished with 111* off 106 balls against Pakistan•Associated Press

Rahul then touched upon the route he took to his India comeback. There was a lot of soul-searching, and introspection of his game – which he mostly said was around the mental side – and, of course, the hard yards at rehab at the National Cricket Academy.”Firstly, three out of the five months I spent getting fitter, giving my body the rest,” he said. “I was in great hands at the NCA. I want to thank the NCA staff and Rajni sir [Physio S Rajnikanth], he made me run around a lot. He’s gotten me fit for this. I knew when I returned, I was aiming for the Asia Cup. I knew the conditions would be humid.”I knew the World Cup that will follow at home would be challenging, especially to do both keeping and batting. I trained that much extra. Batting, when you’re out and have a lot of time. I watched a lot of videos, and reflected on things where I can get better. I spoke to a few coaches, and I knew where the fault lines were, it was mostly mental, and I tried to address those things. I also came back fresh without any baggage, guess that helps.”How did he feel when he walked out for his first international game in six months, where he was up against Pakistan’s gun pace attack of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah?”It was my first international match after a long time, the intensity isn’t the same at a practice match,” Rahul said as he opened up about his unbeaten 233-run stand with Virat Kohli. “When I walked in, there was that nervousness. It took me 10-15 minutes to just calm myself down and get my feet moving, get my mind thinking about the right things.”When I hit one or two boundaries, the fogginess went away, and it became like before. I was reacting to the ball, to the situation. Just when my rhythm was building, it started raining and we had to wait for a whole day and restart, so again [upon resumption] the 10-15 balls were nervy. Once I hit a few balls in the middle, you forget about those things.”On Monday, he batted the way he would, largely risk-free and with clarity, especially against spin in the middle overs. Unlike at the 2019 ODI World Cup, where Rahul had to shift back up to open in the wake of Shikhar Dhawan’s injury after being initially slotted in the middle order, there seems to be clarity that middle order is where his calling will be. India will hope that clarity will pay rich dividends at the World Cup.

Barcelona face vicious fightback from Athletic Club over Nico Williams pursuit as transfer tug of war threatens to get ugly

Athletic Club are set to report Barcelona to La Liga in an attempt to force a full financial audit as they bid to keep Nico Williams this summer.

Athletic to report Barca to La LigaWant them to prove 1:1 rule eligibilityWilliams keen on move to Camp NouFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Per , Athletic have sent a delegation, comprising of president Jon Uriarte and general manager Jon Berasategi, to Madrid in a bid to force a full audit of Barca's financial operations amid their ongoing pursuit of Williams. They believe that the club have not complied with the league's 1:1 rule, which allows clubs to only spend what they have generated in revenue.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Williams has communicated to Athletic that he wants to leave to join Barcelona, but report that Athletic are ready to fight to keep him, and insist they have not reached any agreement with the winger to leave this summer, after he signed a new deal in December. The Spain international has a release clause of just over €60 million (£51m/$70m), but his current employers will call on La Liga to stop any transfer until Barca prove they can meet the 1:1 criteria.

WHAT LAPORTA SAID

Laporta told Mundo Deportivo, via Barca Blaugranes: “We don’t have bad relations with Athletic, yes there have been a series of misunderstandings and incidents in recent years, but you can’t say we have bad relations, we are two clubs with a very long history and with relationships that go back a long time.

“I don’t understand the reactions they are having, with all due respect, each one should look after their own, I don’t understand why they are going to talk about Barça in La Liga, I don’t think it’s right, but they will know what they are doing.”

Asked about the 1:1 rule, he added: “We are working to be in the 1:1 rule, we were already in it in the winter market, all the steps have been taken to be able to sign normally, to not be financially intervened with the ‘fair play’ as happened until winter, we have to comply with certain parameters, which is what we are doing and depending on that we will be able to sign and register the two players we want to sign… or register.”

Who will join the €100m club next? Alexander Isak, Rodrygo & the nine stars set to demand crazy transfer fees in 2025 – ranked

With the spending power among the elite clubs now greater than ever, there is likely to be a host of eye-watering deals in the coming weeks

Florian Wirtz became only the 17th player in history to command a transfer fee of €100m (£84m/$113m) or more when he joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in a British record €136m (£116m/$156m) deal earlier this month. However, there will likely be at least one more entrant in that exclusive club this summer.

Ever since Neymar's €222 million (£198m/$247m) move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, the fees exchanged between top European sides have skyrocketed to previously unimaginable levels, and there has been no sign of the bubble bursting anytime soon. In fact, inflated transfer fees have become commonplace, partly due to the rise of the Saudi Pro League, and also because there now appears to be a surplus of game-changing talents in the Pep Guardiola era of strict tactical systems.

The truly world-class performers, particularly those who operate at the top end of the pitch, are now valued more highly than ever before as all the top clubs scramble to make the marginal gains necessary to win major silverware. The question is: who will be the next €100m (£85m/$117m) superstar?

GOAL has ranked the top ten contenders below, starting with an English teenager who has already experienced the highs and lows of life in the Premier League…

    9Tyler Dibling (Southampton)

In the winter transfer window, Tottenham reportedly contacted Southampton over a potential deal for Tyler Dibling, and were told the midfielder would not be sold for anything less than £100m ($137m). How much truth there was in that claim only the two clubs will know, but the mere notion of Dibling being worth a nine-figure fee at this stage of his career is, quite frankly, ridiculous.

That's not to say that the 19-year-old isn't a brilliant prospect. Dibling was perhaps the only bright spark in Southampton's miserable 2024-25 campaign, which ended in relegation, standing out most in a draw with Brighton and home and away defeats to Manchester United – who have also been strongly linked with the England U21 international.

"I heard rumours of Manchester United being ready to submit a £21m ($29m) bid for Tyler Dibling," former Saints boss Russell Martin said in December. "I’m not sure they’d get his left foot for that." Martin uttered those words with a completely straight face, but Southampton have since lost that kind of bargaining power. Dibling offers could flood in when the summer window reopens, and the club would be wise to significantly drop their valuation if they want a much-needed financial boost in the Championship.

    8Vangelis Pavlidis (Benfica)

Chelsea and Newcastle have both reportedly shown an interest in signing Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis, who enjoyed a dream debut campaign at the Estadio da Luz. Signed for just €18m (£15m/$21m) from AZ Alkmaar, the Greece international scored 29 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions in 2024-25, with seven of those coming in the Champions League as Benfica enjoyed a run through to the round of 16.

Pavlidis is also impressing at the Club World Cup, and the 26-year-old's stock will go through the roof if he inspires Benfica to victory over Chelsea in the first knockout stage. The problem is, any suitors will have to trigger Pavlidis' €100m release clause to prise him away from the Portuguese club, who have made it clear they are not open to negotiating a cut-price deal.

There is no question that Pavlidis is a natural goalscorer and an impressive link-man, but he's yet to play in one of Europe's major leagues, and it remains to be seen if any of the elite clubs are willing to take such a big gamble on the Greek ace.

  • Getty Images

    7Rodrigo Mora (Porto)

Last season was a breakout one for Porto's Rodrigo Mora: the 18-year-old attacking midfielder who has been mooted as a potential target for PSG, Man Utd and Arsenal. Mora signed a new contract at the Estadio Do Dragao in May, which reportedly includes a €100m release clause, but unlike in the case of Pavlidis, that is unlikely to put off interested parties.

The Portuguese playmaker has already nailed down a starting role at Porto, and still has so much potential to unlock. "He sees the game like no one I’ve ever coached," former Porto U15s coach, Nuno Pimentel, told when assessing Mora's rapid development. "He’s always one step ahead. Then, he combines it all with a very high level of technical skill."

That much was evident in Porto's final nine league games, as Mora plundered seven goals, including a brace in a 2-1 victory over Familicao. The teenager is equally as capable of deciding games himself as he is of dictating them, and now may be the best time for Europe's big boys to swoop, because his value is only going to increase if he stays on his current trajectory.

    6Bradley Barcola (PSG)

According to , Arsenal are also interested in PSG winger Bradley Barcola, but face stiff competition from Chelsea and Bayern Munich. PSG are eager to tie Barcola down to fresh terms, but his head could be turned amid fierce competition for places in attack alongside Desire Doue and January signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Barcola played a key role in PSG's treble success last term with 40 goal involvements across all competitions, but found himself in and out of Luis Enrique's starting XI towards the end of the campaign. As such, it has been suggested that a bid in the region of €100m could persuade PSG to facilitate the 22-year-old's departure.

It won't be a surprise if such an offer does come in, because Barcola's versatility makes him a very unique asset. The France international can play anywhere across the frontline without any dip in end product, and it would be a huge waste of his abilities if he is reduced to just a backup player at the Parc des Princes next term.

They only staked their claim further after a 4-0 battering of Atletico Madrid in their opening game. However, they slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat Botafogo in their second game, prompting Enrique to hail the Brazilian side as the best team his side had faced all season. The Spanish coach has also shared that he is "very ambitious" to ensure that Les Parisiens continue being the most dominant force, not just in Europe but also globally.

  • WHAT JOAO NEVES SAID

Speaking to the media after the game, Neves said: "It was tough. It's hot. They're a good team with the ball. We did everything we could to win. We won well. I'm very happy. With rising concerns about how the scorching American climate could impact performance, Tuchel is pushing for a boot camp ahead of the global tournament next June, preceded by another training camp during the March international break in Miami.

Tuchel is working closely with the Football Association’s medical and sports science experts to ensure the squad is well-prepared for the physical demands of competing in extreme weather conditions. He also intends to use his attendance at the ongoing Club World Cup to evaluate the physical condition of England’s potential World Cup players first-hand. Meanwhile, the FA will dispatch operational staff to the United States during the tournament to inspect potential training venues and hotel accommodations.

While the idea of sending England’s top players on a transatlantic trip during the busy March window might not sit well with club managers, especially with crucial Premier League and Champions League fixtures looming, Tuchel appears unfazed.
