Revealed: Man Utd facing major transfer setback with unwanted stars crippling budget ahead of crucial window for Ruben Amorim

Manchester United's transfer plans are being crippled by stalled exits of big names, which has left Ruben Amorim with limited wiggle room this summer.

Manchester United have already kicked off the summer window by sealing a £62.5 million ($85m) deal for Matheus Cunha and remain hopeful of adding Bryan Mbeumo and Joao Palhinha to their ranks. However, head coach Amorim’s recruitment drive is being throttled by financial constraints, and the club must sell before they can continue spending. The Red Devils’ plans are being stalled by their inability to offload high-earning players, as per The Mirror.

AdvertisementGetty/GOALTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Jadon Sancho’s £250k-a-week wages are blocking a permanent move, with Juventus and Napoli only open to loan deals. Marcus Rashford’s preferred switch to Barcelona looks unlikely as the Catalan side looks likely to pursue Nico Williams instead, leaving his future uncertain. Antony is attracting fresh interest following a strong loan spell at Real Betis. Still, while Como and Bayer Leverkusen have been linked, the Brazilian only wants to return to Los Verdiblancos, who can’t afford a permanent transfer this summer. United are said to be eager to cash in on the 25-year-old but may be forced into another loan.

Rasmus Hojlund, meanwhile, wants to stay and fight for his place under Amorim. Inter Milan’s loan-to-purchase proposal has collapsed, and the 22-year-old now looks set to remain, unless a sizeable offer lands on United’s desk, in which case the Red Devils will jump at the opportunity to sell. With no major outgoings yet, Amorim’s rebuild is being held back by a tight budget and too many unsettled stars.

United will continue working to engineer exits for Sancho, Antony, and possibly Rashford to free up budget space and reignite their transfer plans. Alejandro Garnacho’s name has also been floated, but reports suggest that Amorim would prefer to keep the Argentine. With Amorim keen to overhaul the squad, much of the club’s summer business hinges on unlocking sales, and the clock is already ticking.

Elbow injury cuts short Faf du Plessis' CPL season

St Lucia Kings captain Faf du Plessis has been sidelined from the rest of CPL 2023 with a long-standing tennis-elbow injury, for which he will now undergo surgery. Zimbabwe allrounder Sikandar Raza, who made his debut for Kings only earlier this month, will take over as the captain of the side. Kings have also roped in Colin Munro, the highest run-getter among overseas players in CPL history, as du Plessis’ replacement. After powering Kings past Trinbago Knight Riders in Basseterre on Saturday, du Plessis said he would undergo surgery after reaching South Africa. And on Kings’ Instagram channel, he suggested that he could be out of action for about three months.”Happy with the result, but obviously sad [that] I’m leaving at a crucial stage in the tournament when you feel like the team can start doing some really good things in the tournament,” du Plessis told Ian Bishop at the post-match presentation. “For me, the challenge with the elbow is I’ve played with it (tennis elbow) for almost two years; I’ve had eight cortisone injections into my elbow.Related

“So I’m at a stage where the cortisone is not good for my body anymore; so that’s why the operation is always the last resort. I didn’t want to do it, but [have] time off now. I’ve got to basically go from here to get off the plane into the hospital to get the surgery done.”Du Plessis admitted that the tennis elbow had limited his power-hitting in his most recent game against Knight Riders, but he still found a way to pump the ball over the top in the powerplay. He was responsible for 40 of the 48 runs Kings had made in the first six overs. Du Plessis extended his tally to 57 off 36 balls before Andre Russell had him holing out.”[During] the last while I did feel a little bit of loss of power – all because of the pain, which sometimes pulls the power back,” du Plessis said. “So you just have to play a game where you feel like maybe hitting at 80% power, and [on] fields like this [which are] a little bit smaller, you can just time the ball. But yeah, really happy with the innings today.”I think we needed that in the powerplay, especially in my experience playing here and against these guys [TKR] – they’re a very strong powerplay attack. Akeal Hosein always does well; he gets one or two wickets upfront, and then they bowled really well. The fact that we could counterpunch that and get 50 after six [overs] was a great way to play off the front foot.”Sikandar Raza has led in T20 franchise cricket only once•Zim Afro T10

Du Plessis’ injury-enforced absence is a significant blow to Kings. He was their second-highest run-getter last season – behind Johnson Charles – and fourth-highest overall, with 332 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 169. Overall, his leadership has been central to Kings’ progress over the past two years.Raza has only had one stint as captain in recognised franchise T20 cricket – with Dambulla Aura in the LPL last year, when Dasun Shanaka was injured, but du Plessis backed Raza and the rest of Kings’ leadership group to build on their early success this season. They’re currently on top of the table, with six points in five games.”Always for me, it’s about pulling people in for the journey, and try and ask questions. And I feel that’s the best way, according to me, to run things,” du Plessis said. “You use the resources that you have. Roston Chase has been great. For me on the field, [it’s] just speaking to him about local players and asking questions. Johnson Charles is a great cricket brain. He’s not a guy who says a lot, but [is] a great thinker.Tom Curran comes in for TKR as a temporary replacement for Noor Ahmad•Getty Images

“Raza is someone who has played a lot of T20 and T10 cricket. So very much an experienced brain there; so it’s great to have those guys on the field and ask questions. Obviously, it’s a change, and probably you could say a big change because it’s someone stepping into the shoes for the first time with the St Lucia Kings. But luckily, we’ve got someone like Sammy there who will make sure for the first one or two games there will be some direction from his side. And then trust the guy on the field with the resources that he has at his disposal.”Du Plessis will turn 40 next July, but he could be in the fray to return to the South Africa side with the 2024 T20 World Cup in mind.

Tom Curran and Tim David to join TKR

England allrounder Tom Curran, who carried Oval Invincibles to the Men’s Hundred title on Sunday, will link up with Trinbago Knight Riders as a temporary replacement for left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad, who has been picked in Afghanistan’s ODI side for the Asia Cup, which clashes with the CPL.Australia’s Tim David will also join TKR as a replacement for Rilee Rossouw, who is no longer available for the CPL. However, David himself will not be around for Knight Riders’ first six league matches, so Ireland wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker has been brought in as a temporary replacement. David will reunite with Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard, who was his batting coach at Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023.

Yorkshire have signed Dan Moriarty, the South African-born left-arm spinner, on a three-year contract from Surrey, making his loan move permanent.Moriarty broke into Surrey’s first team in 2020 and was part of their side that reached the T20 Blast final that season. But he gradually found opportunities harder to come by, and played a solitary game in their County Championship win last year.He played four games on loan at Yorkshire earlier this year, but will spend the rest of the season with Surrey.”I’m incredibly honoured and extremely excited to begin this new chapter with Yorkshire Cricket,” Moriarty said. “Headingley is a special place to play, and I’ve really enjoyed my time with the club so far and I’m looking forward to continue creating special memories and improve my game at such a prestigious club.He added in a Surrey media release: “I am extremely grateful for the opportunities and experiences this club have given me over the past three years. A massive thank you to all players, staff and members for everything. I will look back at my time at Surrey fondly.”Darren Gough, Yorkshire’s managing director, said Moriarty would “play a big part in everything we are looking to achieve” moving forward. Gough said: “I’m pleased to have secured Dan on a three-year deal. He is a brilliant addition to the team – offering up another bow to our bowling attack – and has impressed at Yorkshire.”We are so pleased that Dan is staying at Headingley. He is the kind of player and person who will continue to add so much to our dressing room, and we look forward to him enjoying a long and successful career with the club.”Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, said: “It’s always disappointing when a player chooses to leave Surrey to go to another county but after numerous conversations with Mozza I fully understand and respect the tough decision he has taken.”He feels he will get more opportunities at Yorkshire to further his own career ambitions and I wish him well and thank him for the contributions he has given to Surrey since joining us.”

Trinbago Knight Riders get first CPL red card; 'absolutely ridiculous,' says Pollard

Sunil Narine had to leave the field as Knight Riders were forced to field with only ten men in the 20th over against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Aug-2023The red card made its first appearance in the Caribbean Premier League 2023, when Trinbago Knight Riders were behind the required over rate at the start of each of their last three overs while bowling against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on Sunday in Basseterre. They were left with only ten men for the final over as a result, and just two fielders outside the 30-yard circle, losing Sunil Narine from the field. As per the new rules in the CPL, if the bowling team doesn’t start the 18th over in time, one additional fielder enters the 30-yard circle with four allowed outside. If they miss the time limit at the start of the 19th over, one more fielder must enter the circle, leaving three in the outfield. And if they don’t start the final over on time, one player must go off the field and they can have just two players outside the circle. Knight Riders incurred all three penalties and Patriots’ No. 5 Sherfane Rutherford made them pay with 18 runs from the final over, bowled by Dwayne Bravo.Fortunately for Knight Riders, Nicholas Pooran, captain Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell smashed their way to the 179-run target with 17 balls in hand. Pollard later called the new penalty rule “absolutely ridiculous”.”This could be a historic moment here… oh, red card,” Ian Bishop called on the official broadcast as the red card was whipped out by on-field umpire Zahid Bassarath before the start of the final over of the Patriots innings. “You don’t want to see that colour card. They must field with only ten, so somebody has to leave the field. And only two outside the 30-yard circle. The absolute last thing that he [Pollard] would want. And imagine the bowler!”

Pollard, moving his limited fielding options around, asked Narine, who had finished his four-over spell with 3 for 24, to leave the field.”To be honest, it will take away the hard work everyone has done,” Pollard said on the broadcast after the game. “We are like the pawns and we are going to do what we are told. We are going to play as fast as we can. If you are penalised for 30-45 seconds in a tournament like this, it is absolutely ridiculous.”Red cards, a first in the game, have been introduced in the 2023 CPL – for both men’s and women’s competitions – to combat slow over rates. “We have been disappointed that our T20 games have been getting longer and longer each year, and we want to do what we can to arrest this trend,” Michael Hall, CPL tournament operations director, had said in a statement prior to the start of the tournament. The slow over-rate penalties If behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over, one additional player must enter the fielding circle – for a total of five players inside the circle If behind the rate at the start of the 19th over, two additional fielders must enter the fielding circle – for a total of six inside the circle If behind the rate at the start of the final over, teams will lose a player from the field – selected by the captain – and have six inside the fielding circle There will also be an onus on batting teams to keep the game moving. After a first and final warning from the umpires, the batting team will be slapped with a five-run penalty for each instance of time wastingThe rule, using the 85-minutes-per-innings rule for T20 cricket, is that the 17th over of the innings must be completed by 72 minutes and 15 seconds, the 18th by 76 minutes and 30 seconds, and the 19th by 80 minutes and 45 seconds, before the last over ends within 85 minutes.”Over rates will be monitored by the third umpire and communicated to the captains via on-field umpires at the end of every over, as well as to the crowd and TV audience, with graphics showing how far they are behind (or ahead of) the over rate,” a CPL statement had said. “Dispensations will be given for injuries, DRS and time-wasting by batting side where appropriate.”

Shades of Firmino: Liverpool ready €170m bid for "best CF in the world"

Liverpool are on the verge of a historic Premier League title and with Jurgen Klopp gone, that is quite the sentence.

When the German announced his departure, it caused mass panic among the Anfield faithful. The Reds were fearing a seismic drop-off, potentially years away from challenging for a league again.

However, Arne Slot has – to excuse the pun – slotted right in and made Anfield cheer his name almost as loudly as Klopp’s.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Liverpool may have exited the Champions League and lost the Carabao Cup final but that will not matter when they lift the Premier League aloft in six weeks or so.

So, it’s time to capitalise on this triumph. With Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah potentially set to exit, they will need to strengthen.

Liverpool summer transfer plans

Alexander-Arnold will be boarding a plane to Madrid imminently, so signing a new right-back must be a priority. Reports suggest Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong is an option.

Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong

They will also need a new forward. Darwin Nunez is regularly linked with the exit door and just cannot build up any consistency in front of goal, scoring a dismal seven goals across 40 outings in all competitions this term.

That would explain links to strikers such as Newcastle’s Alexander Isak but the Toon’s reluctance to sell means it’s unlikely he’ll be going anywhere soon.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, how about Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez? The Argentine only left Manchester City last summer but reports in Spain suggest he could be on the move again.

One publication on the continent is reporting that Liverpool are now willing to lodge a truly ridiculous €170m (£142m) bid to bring him to Anfield this summer.

It’s indicated that a deal could be done if Salah leaves with Slot and Co very much on the lookout for alternatives in the worst-case scenario.

If a deal was done at that price, it would make it one of the biggest moves in the history of the sport and the biggest in Premier League history.

How Julian Alvarez compares to Alexander Isak

So, Isak is clearly the number one target for a lot of clubs this summer and it’s hardly a surprise given his haul of 23 goals in 33 outings. There aren’t many better strikers out there.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their second goal

However, since leaving City, Alvarez has also been on fire and in the words of Argentine journalist Roy Nemer, the World Cup winner has been the “best forward in the world” this season.

Do the numbers support that? Well, he’s found the net on 23 occasions, the same number as Isak, although he has played 12 more games.

Isak is an out and out centre-forward and although Alvarez can do that job tremendously, he can also play in a number 10 role, making him rather similar to Bobby Firmino.

Firmino wasn’t a direct striker either, notably deployed as a false 9 by Klopp on plenty of occasions. As a result, the Brazilian used his selfless creativity to pick out runners in behind. Alvarez could be used in a similar manner.

Analysing the numbers above, it’s clear that Newcastle’s Swedish sensation is more prolific but in other areas they are pretty closely matched, demonstrating a similar level of creativity and carrying this season.

However, if we analyse more historical data, Alvarez is usually the more creative of the duo, supplying 1.66 key passes per 90 to Isak’s 1.22 per 90 since 2022. There’s that Firmino-esque attribute shining through once more.

We know that Slot likes a multi-faceted and versatile forward so perhaps there is sense in chasing the Argentine instead. Aged 25, he’s yet to even reach his prime either.

This would be an exceptional signing for the Reds.

Marsh and Maxwell star in Australia's consolation win

Australia’s top four all made fifties to lift the team to 352, and despite half-centuries from Kohli and Rohit, India fell well short in the chase

Ashish Pant27-Sep-20231:00

Have Iyer and Suryakumar settled some nerves for India?

Attacking fifties from the top four, backed up by Glenn Maxwell’s frugal four-for on return helped Australia avoid a clean sweep as they got the better of India by 66 runs in the third and final ODI in Rajkot. India still took the series 2-1 having won the opening two games convincingly. Both sides made a host of changes – Australia five and India six – from the second ODI. Batting first on what looked like a placid Rajkot surface, Mitchell Marsh, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith and David Warner all scored fifties to propel Australia to 352 for 7.Related

Washington, Ashwin or Axar? This aside, India have most bases covered ahead of World Cup

In reply, Rohit Sharma bashed a 57-ball 81 while Virat Kohli scored a more sedate fifty, but the lower middle order failed to get going as India were bowled out for 286 in 49.4 overs.Australia, playing a near full-strength side, took charged up from the get-go. They raced to 90 for 1, with India conceding 11 fours and five sixes in the first ten overs. And it was Jasprit Bumrah they targeted, who had a game of two halves. He conceded 0 for 51 off his first five overs and 3 for 30 off his last five but seemed off the boil with his lengths overall.Marsh creamed the first ball he received from the fast bowler through covers before pummeling him for two fours and six in his second over. Warner took 16 runs off Mohammed Siraj’s second over before thumping Prasidh Krishna was for 19 off his first as Australia galloped to 50 in 6.1 overs.Warner soon notched up a half-century of his own, his third of the series, off 32 balls but failed to carry on. Trying to be a bit too adventurous, Warner pre-meditated a scoop to a Prasidh length ball on the stumps but could only get a bit of a glove and a top edge through to the wicketkeeper.Smith, coming on the back of a duck, was in his elements right away. Marsh brought up his fifty off 45 balls before the heat started to take its toll even as Australia breached the 150-mark in the 22nd over.Bumrah’s second spell also proved expensive with Marsh laying into him. He hoicked the quick over deep backward square leg before crashing him for three successive fours. Smith and Marsh added 137 off 119 balls for the second wicket and when Australia screamed past 200 in 26.2 overs, 400 was on the cards. But India managed to pull things back well. Marsh, absolutely knackered by the heat, patted a Kuldeep wrong’un to cover to fall for 96. Soon after, Siraj pinned Smith right in front with a length ball that skidded through and missed his attempted flick. Bumrah returned to deceive Alex Carey with a slower offcutter and then rattled Maxwell’s off pole with a pinpoint yorker. And, when Cameron Green holed out to long-on, Australia had lost four wickets for 57 in 11 overs between the 32nd and 43rd.Labuschagne, however, kept his composure to keep Australia going. He smashed 72 off 58 balls with nine fours as Australia crossed 350 in the final over. Despite the tall score, India did manage to pull things back in the last part, conceding 122 runs in the last 20 overs and just 66 off the last ten.Rohit had a new opening partner in Washington Sundar and India’s chase got off to a flying start largely due to Rohit. The duo added 74 for the opening wicket in 65 balls, with Rohit’s contribution being 55 off 35.The pull worked the magic for the India captain on the day with the shot earning him 35 runs off just ten balls. Ironically, it was a mistimed pull that got him to the landmark. Green purchased some extra bounce outside off with Rohit managing a top edge on a pull that ballooned straight up. But Starc running back from short third, failed to latch on to a tough catch.Washington was dismissed for a 30-ball 18 with Labuschagne taking a wonderful catch at wide long-off. Kohli then joined forces with Rohit and the duo added 70 off 61 balls to keep the chase on track.A stunning piece of reflex catch, however, sent Rohit back and Australia applied the choke thereafter. Rohit absolutely slapped a quickish length ball by backing away towards the bowler, who tried to take evasive action but also held out his right hand with the ball sticking.Post Rohit’s dismissal in the 21st over, Australia conceded just two fours and a six in the next ten overs. Kohli reached his 65th half-century in the format, but became Maxwell’s third victim when he top-edged a short-of-a-length ball to Smith at midwicket.Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul failed to find the boundaries as the required rate continued to creep up. Rahul was sent back by Starc while Suryakumar Yadav failed to repeat his second ODI heroics. And when Iyer was castled by Maxwell, the end was nigh.Ravindra Jadeja managed to get some batting practice enroute a 36-ball 35 before Green ended proceedings by taking out Siraj off the penultimate ball of the game.
