Man City must regret selling "incredible" star who’s like Gonzalez & Luiz

Out of all 20 Premier League teams, Manchester City’s January transfer window was arguably the most productive.

Indeed, Pep Guardiola made four important signings who could all contribute to the future of the club, potentially helping usher in a new era at the Etihad.

Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov all joined City. The latter two are aged just 19 and 20, indicating that the future is bright in Manchester.

A midfielder in the form of Nico Gonzalez also arrived.

Manchester City's hunt for a new midfielder

The Citizens have desperately needed a new midfielder ever since Rodri went down with an ACL injury.

Those problems were only exacerbated against Arsenal on Sunday when they were torn to shreds by Arsenal.

So, what did the title holders do to try and fix this? During the window, City were showing some interest in re-signing midfielder Douglas Luiz, five and a half years since selling him to Aston Villa.

The Brazilian has failed to settle at Juventus, but no move materialised to re-join his former side this winter.

Elsewhere, the club were also keen on Porto midfielder Gonzalez in a bid to add something extra to their midfield area.

Unlike Luiz, this was a move they ultimately got over the line in the final knockings of the window, paying a reported £50m fee.

Although signing either of these two players or even both, if Guardiola was willing to splash the cash, will have given the club a lift, they could have avoided the need to spend such a seismic sum…

Man City have already sold their own Gonzalez

Ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, Guardiola sold a certain Romeo Lavia for a fee of just £10.5m to Southampton. The Belgian had featured just twice for the senior side under the former Barcelona manager, and it appeared as though he had no future at the club.

His spell at the Saints was a resounding success. He played 34 times for the club, starring in the top flight. Defensively, he was solid, ranking in the top 11% of midfielders in the Premier League for blocks and the top 24% for tackles and interceptions, despite the club suffering relegation.

Injury problems have disrupted his Chelsea career so far, but he has made some progress this season. The midfielder has played ten Premier League matches, demonstrating his ability across a range of metrics.

Not only has he succeeded with 92% of his passes, but the 21-year-old has created a big chance, succeeded with 58% of his dribble attempts and won 53% of his total duels per game, showcasing an all-round game which encapsulates the best parts of Luiz and Gonzalez combined; combative duel winners who are also comfortable in possession of the ball.

Described as a “top, top class midfield player” by pundit Tim Sherwood, the youngster certainly could have saved the club a few bob.

While he wasn’t quite at this level during his spell with City, if Guardiola had given him more consistent game time, then perhaps the likes of Gonzalez and Luiz could have been forgotten about.

As well as Aaronson: Farke must drop 4/10 Leeds ace who lost 83% duels

Leeds United’s lead at the top of the Championship table was cut down to three points on Saturday as they failed to secure a win against West Bromwich Albion at Elland Road.

The West Yorkshire outfit did, however, take the lead in the game when Junior Firpo rose to score his second header in as many league games for the club to make it 1-0.

West Brom found their equaliser before the break, though, as Darnell Furlong got the jump on Jayden Bogle and Illan Meslier appeared flatfooted as the ball looped over him and into the back of the net.

Unfortunately, Daniel Farke’s side were unable to break down a stubborn Baggies defence and they did not create another ‘big chance’ in the game after Firpo’s goal.

One of the reasons why Leeds struggled to create many high-quality opportunities against Tony Mowbray’s team was that the attacking players failed to step up and show their quality in the final third.

Brenden Aaronson was one of those players and the American attacking midfielder must, now, be dropped to the bench by Farke for the next league clash with Portsmouth next Sunday.

Why Brenden Aaronson should be dropped

The former RB Salzburg star has been a firm favourite of Farke’s throughout the Championship season, starting 33 of his 35 appearances in the division, but now could be the time for him to be taken out of the side.

Chalkboard

Aaronson, as the attacking midfielder, should be in the team to make things happen at the top of the end of the pitch, contributing with goals and assists, as well as his excellent pressing and off-the-ball work.

However, Leeds have not been getting as much of the former as they have the latter. In fact, the 24-year-old dud has now failed to score or assist in any of his ten matches against the current top six in the Championship.

As you can see in the table above, the American midfielder has offered very little in front of goal against the best teams in the division, which was the case yet again against West Brom on Saturday.

Aaronson ended the match against the Baggies with zero shots on target and zero ‘big chances’ created for his teammates, which is why he should be dropped from the team to see if another player can outperform him in the number ten role.

He is not the only poor performer from the draw with West Brom who should be dropped down to the bench, though, as Farke should also ruthlessly bin Manor Solomon from the line-up after his struggles.

Manor Solomon's performance against West Brom

The Israel international started on the left flank, with Aaronson in the middle and Dan James on the right, and failed to make much of an impact in the final third.

James was the only one of the front four to be directly involved in the team’s only goal, with his cross for Junior Firpo’s header, whilst Aaronson, Solomon, and Joel Piroe all blanked at the top end of the pitch.

Solomon, like the American lightweight, has also struggled against the top teams in the league. The Tottenham Hotspur loanee has as many errors leading to goals (one) as goal contributions (one) in his seven appearances against the current top six.

In the draw with West Brom, the Leeds flop was handed a dismal rating of 4/10 by Football Insider, who wrote that the Premier League loanee did not trouble the opposition’s goal.

As you can see in the table above, the 25-year-old attacker lost 83% of his duels, as the West Brom defenders found it too easy to get the better of him, and he failed to offer much in front of goal with zero shots on target and no ‘big chances’ created.

Therefore, Farke must also ruthlessly ditch Solomon from the XI, with Wilfried Gnonto and Largie Ramazani waiting in the wings, after his dismal showing against the Baggies.

Leeds United's Manor Solomon dilemma

The winger is currently on loan from Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road and TEAMtalk recently reported that Leeds are interested in a deal to sign the forward on a permanent basis.

Leeds United'sManorSolomoncelebrates scoring their first goal

It was claimed that the Whites are preparing to approach Spurs to negotiate a permanent deal to sign the attacker when the summer transfer window opens for business, if they secure promotion to the Premier League this season.

The outlet added that Tottenham are expected to value Solomon at a fee of up to £20m, amid interest from top-flight side Everton as well, and Leeds must decide whether or not that is good value.

He has scored seven goals and provided seven assists in 28 appearances in the second tier, which is a very respectable return, but his aforementioned form against the top six is a concern.

Crysencio Summerville scored 19 goals and assisted a further nine in the Championship last season and has only managed one goal and one assist in 19 games in the Premier League for West Ham United.

The Hammers reportedly paid a fee of more than £25m for the Dutch winger and he has been unable to translate his second tier form over to the Premier League as of yet, which illustrates how big of a gap it is between the two divisions.

Summerville and Solomon are also both similar players, as they are small and nimble wingers – standing at 5 foot 9 and 5 foot 7 respectively – who have thrived in the Championship thanks to their quick feet and lethal finishing.

However, the Dutch attacker has found it difficult to make an impact in the Premier League against quicker and stronger defenders, which could be the same issue that Solomon will face – particularly when you take into account his existing struggles against the best Championship teams.

Leeds may have unearthed the Championship's new Gyokeres in "dangerous" ace

Leeds United have hit the jackpot with this impressive Championship star.

ByDan Emery Feb 28, 2025

Therefore, Leeds have a difficult decision to make as they could end up wasting £20m on a player who cannot make the step up to the top-flight, which is why they have to be absolutely sure that he will be a success at a higher level next season.

Now worth more than Mudryk: Boehly will regret selling Chelsea ace for £3m

Chelsea’s academy has been up there with one of the very best in the country over the last few years, helping the club win nine FA Youth Cup trophies – the most in the competition’s history.

Endless players have made the jump from Cobham into the first-team setup, having a huge impact on the club and cementing their place as a regular under various different managers.

Enzo Maresca’s current side possesses multiple academy graduates, including the likes of Reece James, Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah as the trio look to fire the Blues back to Premier League success.

Chelsea manager EnzoMarescalooks dejected after the match

Numerous others have been sacrificed to raise funds for the managers to make their own stamp on the squad, including Mason Mount who moved to Manchester United for £60m last summer – a great deal considering his tally of 33 games in the last 18 months.

Such a move undoubtedly softens the blow of the big money spent by owner Todd Boehly, with the American forking out huge money to secure the services of one star back in January 2023.

Mykhailo Mudyrk’s time at Chelsea so far

After a bidding war with London rivals Arsenal, Chelsea secured a huge £88.5m move for Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk in January 2023, joining the Blues from Shakhtar Donetsk.

His first appearance came as a substitute against Liverpool at Anfield, making an immediate impression with his pace and direct nature with the ball at his feet.

However, it would be an audition that sold the supporters a dream, with the 24-year-old unable to sustain such a level of performance, only registering 10 goals in his 73 appearances to date.

The winger hasn’t featured since the end of November due to a provisional suspension after he tested positive for a banned substance, with his return date or outcome of the decision yet to be announced.

Chelsea winger Mykhaylo Mudryk

His lack of form, coupled with his current absence, has seen a drastic decrease in market value, with one former first-team star massively overtaking him in value after his form away from Stamford Bridge.

The former Chelsea player now worth more than Mudryk

English attacker Callum Hudson-Odoi emerged out of the club’s academy as a teenager, looking to be the next big thing to make his mark on the first team in West London.

The now 24-year-old first showcased his talents on a consistent basis in 2018/19, making 24 appearances, scoring five times and registering five assists – looking way beyond his tender age.

Such a run of form would see interest from European giants Bayern Munich, but the Blues would stand firm, rejecting a loan with an option to buy for £70m – highlighting his importance to the club, with the hierarchy showing faith in his development.

However, an achilles injury in April 2019 would halt his progress at his boyhood side, sidelining him for an extended period and dropping him down the pecking order as a result.

Hudson-Odoi would move on loan to Bayer Leverkusen in 2022/23 to try and resurrect his promising career, before ending his spell with the Blues and joining Nottingham Forest for just £3m two years ago.

The move would allow the winger to thrive in the Premier League once again, registering eight goals and two assists in his debut campaign in the East Midlands – leading to talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbing him as “superb”.

He’s once again continued his stellar form during this campaign, scoring the only goal in the Reds’ victory against Liverpool at Anfield, remaining as the only side to defeat Arne Slot’s side in the league.

As a result of his displays, Forest have valued the forward at £40m, an increase of 1235% from the fee the Blues sold him for less than two years ago, subsequently seeing him worth more than Mudryk, who’s now valued at just £25m by Transfermarkt.

Given the re-emergence of Hudson-Odoi, the decision to allow him to leave for such a minimal fee is now one that looks to be a huge mistake, potentially offloading a player who could have played a vital role under Maresca.

Mudyrk has ultimately failed to match the expectations of his big-money transfer fee, with the hierarchy now facing a similar situation in taking the risk of offloading the Ukrainian and suffering a repeat of Hudson-Odoi.

Dean Elgar willing to 'carry the weight of scoring runs'

“It’s time for the guys to rise up, time for myself personally to put my hand up and make a massive play for us”

Andrew McGlashan16-Dec-2022Dean Elgar has called on his batters to make a name for themselves, but is also willing to carry the burden of scoring runs on his shoulders as South Africa look to defy the callow statistics of their top order to continue a remarkable run in Australia – they have claimed the last three series there.Elgar and Temba Bavuma are the only specialist batters with previous experience in the country. A huge amount rests on them if South Africa’s strong bowling attack is to have enough runs to work with. But it’s Elgar’s fortunes that are likely to be critical to their chances. He has 13 Test centuries; among the rest of the touring squad there are four. His average of 38.83 is South Africa’s best whereas Australia have two batters – Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith – who stand at over 60.Related

“All the batters have to stand up,” Elgar said. “It’s been a bit of a talking point that’s been surrounding our batting unit of late. Again, I’ve never shied away from that. It’s time for the guys to rise up, time for myself personally to put my hand up and make a massive play for us. We’ve got a really talented group, they are just a little inexperienced when it comes to Test cricket. They don’t have a lot of baggage coming into the series. They just need to take the opportunities when they come their way.”There has been some controversy around the absence of Ryan Rickelton. He was deemed unfit for the tour, with an ankle surgery at the end of the season provided as the reason, but has been churning out runs in domestic cricket back in South Africa. Elgar, however, remained diplomatic and backed those who had made it to Australia.Elgar was part of South Africa’s 2012 and 2016 series wins in Australia, though his personal contribution to the former was somewhat limited: he bagged a pair on debut at the WACA, albeit in a game South Africa won by 309 runs to decide the series. You only have to look at the names around Elgar in that game to recall the batting riches they did once have: Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis.Since then, Elgar has made two centuries against Australia, but there have been plenty of low scores as well, and his average of 33.55 is below his career level.

“We come from South Africa where the wickets are pretty green and juicy. From a personal point of I don’t really shy away from that and I know our batters don’t either.”Dean Elgar

However, some of his standout performances have secured victories: 83 in Port Elizabeth, 127 in Perth and carrying his bat for 141 in Newlands, an innings that could arguably rank as his best, although that became overshadowed by subsequent events. Five of his Test hundreds came during a stellar 2017 when his batting form peaked and the team need more than the 34.12 he has returned this year, though on some challenging surfaces.”I always carry the weight of scoring runs, I’m the senior batter,” he said. “With my external pressures of being the captain I’ve got to score runs. Very much aware of that. It’s always something I thrive on, think it brings the best out of me.”For the opening Test, the teams were greeted by a pitch that remained very green. Australia were taking it in their stride with the help of local knowledge, while Elgar took the glass-half-full view given where his team’s strengths lie, rather than the weakness.”The wicket does look a little friendly for our bowling unit which is nice, but in saying that the green colour doesn’t really scare us,” he said. “We come from South Africa where the wickets are pretty green and juicy. From a personal point of I don’t really shy away from that and I know our batters don’t either.”Since readmission, South Africa have only played at the Gabba once, on the 2012 tour, which turned into a high-scoring draw. But though Australia’s stranglehold on the venue was ended by India in early 2021, it has remained one of their favourite venues.”We don’t have any dirty laundry in terms of playing at the Gabba,” Elgar said. “The history here is obviously not in our favour and that’s okay. You’ve got to have the mindset of playing to win. Australia’s a really tough place to play cricket but also such a rewarding place if you get things right. You have to go beyond what you are used to and [you] have to savour the moment.”

Agents of £55m Man Utd star who Amorim loves now working on summer exit

The agents of a Manchester United player, who has received high praise from Ruben Amorim, are now actively working on a summer move, with a Champions League club keen on a move.

Major rebuild needed at Old Trafford

Man United have recently announced they will make up to 200 more staff redundant, in the latest series of cost-cutting measures put in place by co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, with the club saying: “The transformation plan aims to return the club to profitability after five consecutive years of losses since 2019.”

Difficult decisions are being made behind the scenes to make United profitable again, but a major rebuild of the squad will be needed if they are to start competing for the top honours.

The Red Devils are sitting 15th in the Premier League table with less than a third of the season left to play, so it is clear an overhaul is needed this summer, and a number of first-team players could face the axe.

One player not mentioned on that list is Mason Mount, who has had a tough time with injuries this season, missing the last 10 Premier League games with a thigh issue.

However, a new report from Inter Live has now revealed Mount’s agents are now actively working on securing a move away from Old Trafford in the summer, with Inter now willing to bring the midfielder in on loan.

Inter would only be willing to sanction a loan move, with an option to buy, but they would be willing to make a significant contribution towards the 26-year-old’s salary, which is said to be very high.

The Englishman arrived at Old Trafford for a fee of £55m nearly two years ago, but his value has now plummeted to just €30m (£25m), after a difficult spell in Manchester.

Mount struggling with injuries

Injuries have not helped the central midfielder, but in truth he has struggled in a Man United shirt ever since arriving from Chelsea, registering just two goal contributions in all competitions.

Amorim has been full of praise for the £250k-per-week earner in the past, saying: “I have to tell you I love that kid. You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad, and this is the most important thing for me.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim gives instructions to Manchester United'sMasonMount

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

However, the former Chelsea man has been unable to put his persistent injury problems behind him, having now missed a total of 45 games since joining the Red Devils, so it may be wise to move Mount on this summer, and Inter being willing to make a big contribution to his salary is a bonus.

"Incredible" Man City star may need surgery alongside Akanji in fresh blow

In another injury blow for Pep Guardiola to contend with, one Manchester City star may now require surgery alongside Manuel Akanji with the Citizens’ problems going from bad to worse.

Man City injury news

Anything that could go wrong has gone wrong for Manchester City this season. After four Premier League titles in a row, the champions have finally suffered from their push for such success and been hit with injury after injury. Rodri’s season-ending injury was enough to send Guardiola’s side in the wrong direction, but far more than just the Spaniard have been sidelined throughout the current campaign.

Man City already sold their answer to Mbappé who Pep dubbed "incredible"

Following Kylian Mbappé’s hat-trick to dump Manchester City out of the Champions League, did the sky blues sell their own superstar attacker?

Just when those at the Etihad thought they’d restored some stability in the first leg of their eventual Champions League defeat against Real Madrid, their medical team once again received what has become an all too familiar call. Down went Jack Grealish and down went Akanji followed by City’s Champions League hopes altogether, with the latter requiring surgery.

Only compiling their misery, Madrid then took a 3-2 lead to the Bernabeu where they romped to a 3-1 victory to win 6-3 on aggregate courtesy of a Kylian Mbappe hat-trick. But still, the bad news didn’t stop there.

As confirmed by Guardiola, John Stones may now require surgery alongside Akanji after he suffered his latest injury blow in the second leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Just over a week ago, Stones looked likely to become the solution to Rodri’s absence in a surprise defensive midfield role. In just one half, he was forced to move back into the back four following Akanji’s injury. In just over a week, he’s been forced out the side altogether through another injury of his own.

Man City's injury crisis continues

To say that Manchester City are paying for any potential sins this season would be an understatement. For the first time in Guardiola’s career, Champions League qualification is in doubt and a trip to the Etihad is perhaps a scarier prospect for the Spaniard himself rather than league leaders Liverpool this weekend.

Stones, perhaps even more than most, will be a major miss up against the Reds and others in the coming weeks. The England international has often found himself at the centre of Guardiola’s praise in what has been an illustrious City career.

The former Barcelona manager praised his defender’s shock goalscoring form earlier this season when he netted against both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sparta Prague, telling reporters: “When Erling is not available John can play as a striker. Gerard Pique in Barca he had an incredible sense of goal and John is the same. He’s already scored a few goals. He’s back and I’m happy for him.”

Now set to be without both Stones and Akanji for some time, City must somehow create internal solutions yet again ahead of Liverpool’s visit.
