Exclusive: Marlon Harewood highlights Thiago Silva as ideal Tottenham signing

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Marlon Harewood has highlighted where Jose Mourinho must strengthen his Spurs side once the January transfer window opens.

The north London outfit made an impressive eight new signings over the summer as Daniel Levy wasted no time in looking to improve on last season’s disappointing finish. Along with loanee signing Gareth Bale, Tottenham acquired full-backs Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon, midfielders Giovani Lo Celso and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as well as 22-year-old central defender Joe Rodon.

Whilst this isn’t a haul to be sniffed at, Harewood believes that Spurs should have taken a leaf from Chelsea’s book during their summer spree.

“Chelsea made a very good signing in Thiago Silva,” the former striker said. “That’s a great signing for them to add to what they’ve already got.

“Spurs need a player like that. Someone who’s got experience and a stature to help everyone around him.”

The Blues brought the Brazilian icon to Stamford Bridge from Paris Saint Germain on a free contract. Silva is now one of the highest paid players at the club, earning a reported £110,000 per week.

Although Spurs have the likes of club veterans Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier, they do lack a natural leader who has ‘been there and done that’. Silva arrives at Chelsea boasting seven Ligue 1 titles, seven French Super Cups, an Italian Super Cup and a Copa America trophy (via Transfermarkt).

The 36-year-old also has 93 senior caps for Brazil and has represented his country at both the World Cup and the Olympics. This kind of experience is something that will boost Tottenham’s backline and help to grow younger players like Rodon and 21-year-old Japhet Tanganga.

“Tottenham need a centre-half like that in their backline,” Harewood reaffirmed.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans unhappy with Gerrard comments on Docherty and McCrorie

Glasgow Rangers continued their impressive early season form with a 3-0 victory against St. Johnstone on Wednesday.

The Gers came into the game on the back of two victories against Aberdeen and St. Mirren, who they beat 1-0 and 3-0 respectively and, with Celtic’s match against the latter postponed following Boli Bolingoli’s breach of pandemic regulations, the Ibrox outfit knew they could go five points clear of their fierce rivals with a win – goals from Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Borna Barisic made sure that was the case.

After the match, Steven Gerrard was asked about the future of both Greg Docherty and Ross McCrorie, and he confirmed that both players could be sold this summer – the former has been given permission to talk to Hull, whilst Hibernian are interested in the latter.

The boss’ comments have attracted plenty of attention from the Gers supporters, and it is fair to say that they are not happy with Gerrard’s comments. After all, they are both young, and they both have quality – McCrorie has been hailed by Gerrard himself as a potential future captain, whilst Docherty managed five assists in seven games whilst on loan with Hibs during the second half of last term.

Newcastle United: Mark Douglas relays what lawyer fighting Premier League has said about takeover

Mark Douglas has relayed what one of the lawyers who will be fighting the Premier League in a court case has previously said about the proposed takeover of Newcastle United.

Nick de Marco QC and Shaheed Fatima QC are acting on behalf of the Tyneside club and Mike Ashley (instructed by Dentons) in a dispute against the top flight and it chief executive Richard Masters about the £300m takeover bid made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian (KSA) group, according to Blackstone Chambers.

Speaking on the prospective deal between Ashley and the Saudi-led consortium back in May, as per a tweet by Douglas, de Marco said:

“Unless there is a clear and obvious link between an individual and an offenceÂand that individual has been convicted in some court of law or tribunal, then it’s very difficult to see how they could fail the test.â€

“At this stage, given what’s in the public domain, I can’t see an obvious route for turning it down even though a lot of people may want that to happen.â€

Indeed, de Marco is highly regarded among the top sports lawyers available in the country as he has been branded as “the Lionel Messi of sport law,” according to Price Of Football.

His words a few months ago may bring some good news to members of the Toon Army, as de Marco seemed confident that the deal would go through and, judging by his statement, would be able to argue against England’s highest division and Masters himself over why the takeover was rejected by the EPL.

It is not yet known approximately how long the court case would be expected to take, but it may give some hope to fans at St. James’ Park that they will see a takeover happen in the northeast.

However, de Marco and indeed Fatima will both have to win the case first against the Premier League, which may not be so easy.

Geordies, do you think you can win the case? Comment below with your views!

The People’s Pension Stadium

Key information about the People’s Pension Stadium

People’s Pension Stadium was built in 1997 and is now the home of the League Two side Crawley Town. The ground is located on Winfield Way in Crawley and is owned by Crawley Borough Council.

Its current capacity stands at 6,134 but with only 3,134 of those being in the seated area. The natural grass pitch measures 101m by 66m and it has no undersoil heating installed nor a running track surrounding the field.

The record attendance of 5,880 at People’s Pension Stadium was reached on 5 January 2013 when Crawley Town hosted Reading in the FA Cup.

A history of People’s Pension Stadium

People’s Pension Stadium, or Broadfield Stadium as it was originally called, was built in 1997 and that also marks the year Crawley Town first moved into their new home. Before that, they had spent 48 years at their Town Mead ground which is only about two miles across town.

The land about one mile from Crawley Railway Station and close to junction 11 on the M23 Motorway was sold to the club in 1997 and it didn’t take them long to settle at the new stadium. Apart from getting a brand new and improved venue, Crawley Town also benefited from the location of the ground since it was much better connected with public transportation, meaning easier access for the fans.

At first, People’s Pension Stadium only had two all-seating stands which ran for the length of the pitch, and also two goal-end terraces with a mix of standing and seating areas. Not much has changed since the early days and just as it was back then, the ground is still very much a modest venue but still a step-up from their previous haven.

At the moment, the maximum capacity stands at 6,134 and it hasn’t yet been converted into an all-seater as 3,000 places are still reserved for standing. This makes it one of the smallest grounds in the league but over the years, it did see some redevelopment.

In 2012, for example, Crawley Town erected a new 2,000 all-seater stand on the eastern side of the pitch. It opened for the first time on Good Friday that year for the League Two home clash versus Crewe Alexandra. There are three other stands surrounding the field, each named after the side it sits on: West, North and South.

The highest attendance ever recorded at People’s Pension Stadium was set on 5 January 2013 when 5,880 watched Crawley Town host Reading in the FA Cup.

Interestingly, the stadium has had various different names. First, it was the Broadfield Stadium, then for a while it was Checkatrade.com Stadium and finally, in 2015, it got its current name due to the latest sponsorship deal with B&CE.

From 2018, Brighton & Hove Albion women’s team is also playing their football at People’s Pension Stadium.

Tickets to watch Crawley Town at People’s Pension Stadium

All tickets to watch Crawley Town play at People’s Pension Stadium can be found on the club’s official website. The price varies depending on the stand chosen but adult tickets can be purchased for a cost that ranges from £16 to £22.

Season tickets are also available for purchase for a price of £290 to £400 for adults.

Tottenham Hotspur: Jermain Defoe asks Callum Wilson if he will join Spurs via Instagram

Tottenham have already made a big signing in this transfer window, as they managed to acquire Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton this week.

It is a sign of intent that Jose Mourinho will get backing from the board to build the squad that he wants in his first full season. We have also seen a departure from the club as promising striker Troy Parrott has gone on loan to Millwall. This means that Harry Kane is the only real centre-forward at the club.

Clearly this has been noticed by Spurs legend Jermain Defoe, who scored 143 goals in 361 appearances for the North London side, per Transfermarkt, as he has been asking a former teammate of his when he will join the club.

Defoe posted on

/CDyRFYopnPx/”>Instagram an image of when he scored two goals for England against Holland eleven years ago. However it is the comment section that will have Spurs fans intrigued as Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson commented on the post, raving over the goal, to which Defoe asked the question, ‘u going spurs or what bro’.

The club have been linked to the England international in the past, and he definitely would add some-much needed firepower as cover or to support Kane as the £18 million-valued ace has managed 41 goals in 142 Premier League games, which is very decent for a striker performing in a side of AFC Bournemouth’s level.

Queens Park Rangers: Club tweet ignites anger amongst supporters

Social media can be a treacherous place for a football club should they have been on the receiving end of a bad result, however there are certain ways of being able to avoid upsetting the fanbase. But, it appears Queen Park Rangers failed to do that with their latest post.

Fans would have already been angered by the embarrassing heavy 5-3 defeat to Barnsley on Saturday afternoon (BBC), but one particular tweet would have sent many of their angry emotions into overdrive.

Indeed, there may have been a sense of expectation and, perhaps a degree of confidence that Mark Warburton’s side would be able to overcome the Championship’s rock-bottom side, especially considering the west London outfit’s recent form – however, that appeared to go out the window almost immediately after the first whistle.

The trip to Yorkshire may not have been the easiest for fans to make or the quickest in the world to do, so some would have likely wanted to have been acknowledged for making that journey to support their club.

Although QPR did that, whoever runs their social media decided to use the phrase: ‘You lot”. It’s safe to say it did not go down too well with many, if anyone, on Twitter.

Here are just some of their reactions…

Charlton: Gary Neville has criticised Lyle Taylor’s refusal to play for Lee Bowyer

Lyle Taylor has refused to partake in the resumption of the Championship season, causing major worries for Charlton’s relegation battle.

Earlier this week, Lee Bowyer told talkSPORT that three senior Addicks players would not be playing once the season returns to action. The club’s top scorer this season is amongst those who has withdrawn from the squad, reportedly due to injury fears.

Gary Neville has criticised this decision and feels Taylor should have honoured his current contract. “He actually has to play football until June 30,” the former Manchester United star said on Sky Sports’ Football Show (10:21am, June 3, 2020).

“He is contracted to play football until June 30. My problem with Lyle’s position is not beyond June 30.”

Indeed, Taylor is under contract with Charlton until the end of the month, with no new deal going ahead. Plenty of clubs have shown interest in snapping up the 30-year-old striker, and he doesn’t want a surprise injury to jeopardise a move.

“With Lyle, he’s going to earn money he’s never earned before,” Lee Bowyer told the Daily Star. “He’s got a lot of clubs queuing up waiting to take him, and he’s earned that.

“But I find it difficult because I would play. It’s making my life a hell of a lot harder to stay in the division because with Lyle Taylor we are a different side.”

Charlton are currently 22nd in the table after a huge turn in form saw them tumble down the table. On 39 points, it’s not impossible to claw their way out of the drop-zone, but the task will prove difficult without Taylor’s influence in front of goal.

“My problem with him is he is contracted to play for your football club today and tomorrow and for every day in this month up to June 30. Why wouldn’t he fulfil his contract?” Neville questioned.

Championship fixtures will resume on June 20 and Bowyer will attempt to salvage his side’s season and keep them afloat in the second tier.

West Ham are concerned that Howe could use interest to negotiate improved Bournemouth deal

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United have concerns that Eddie Howe could use them to get an improved contract with AFC Bournemouth, according to Football Insider.

What’s the story?

Howe has emerged as the Hammers’ first choice option to replace Manuel Pellegrini if he is sacked, with it being added that the 41-year-old is keen on making a move to London Stadium.

[ad_pod ]

West Ham are said to be keen to step things up in their pursuit of the Cherries manager, but are mindful that he could use their interest in order to negotiate an improved contract at Dean Court.

The current Hammers manager was given two games to save his job, according to The Daily Mail, so it is unknown how the victory against Chelsea will impact their managerial situation and Howe’s chances of moving there.

A risk worth taking

It could be considered a risk to move for a manager in these circumstances, especially when Howe has such a close affinity with his club, but this is a risk worth taking.

FFC has previously written that recruiting Eddie Howe would be a sign that West Ham still have pulling power in the Premier League despite their recent struggles, and his relationship with Bournemouth is a large part of that.

In addition to that, Howe has shown that he can develop young and exciting talent, with an example being that he has promoted Aaron Ramsdale to his main goalkeeper, with the 21-year-old having started every one of Bournemouth’s league games this season.

So while there is a risk Howe could use West Ham’s interest to further strengthen his position at Bournemouth, it is worth it for the potential eventuality that they are able to bring him in.

Tottenham fans respond to Kalidou Koulibaly transfer speculation

According to El Desmarque, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly during the January transfer window.

Both Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, as it stands, will be out of contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next June.

As a result, Spurs are likely to be forced into the market for a new central defender, and according to El Desmarque, Koulibaly is very much someone in Jose Mourinho’s sights.

[ad_pod ]

As expected, the transfer claim has sparked the attention of a number of Spurs fans, but it would be fair to say that there are differing views on the topic.

As shown above, there are a number of Tottenham fans who do not believe that their club will be able to pull off a deal for the Senegal international. However, many others have started to get just a little bit excited over his potential arrival.

One supporter even put together a future back four with Koulibaly included, although the individual also put Alderweireld in central defence, and it remains to be seen whether the Belgium international extends his stay at the club following Mourinho’s arrival.

It would certainly be some turn-up if Spurs managed to sign the 28-year-old, who has made over 200 appearances for Napoli since arriving from Genk in the summer of 2014.

Meanwhile, the club’s fans have recently commented on suggestions that a two-time Premier League title winner could arrive in the January transfer window.

Liverpool: Fans baffled by Kenny Cunningham’s comments on Fabinho

Many Liverpool fans have slated Kenny Cunningham over comments that he made on Irish radio about Fabinho.

Speaking to Off The Ball AM, the former Republic of Ireland international questioned the Reds midfielder’s ability to deal with Manchester City’s attacking players ahead of the clubs’ Premier League showdown at Anfield on Sunday.

Cunningham described Fabinho as “a very good player” but expressed reservations about him as a defensive midfielder, casting doubts on his ability to sense danger and track runners and believing that Jordan Henderson is better in that regard.

He told Off The Ball AM: “I’m not totally convinced about him in that holding midfield position,” adding: “Looking at the goals Liverpool have conceded this season, it has been down to Fabinho’s lack of alertness, inability to sense danger and at times not having the legs to get across the pitch and snuff out the danger.”

Former Liverpool player Phil Thompson rebuffed Cunningham’s claims when speaking on Off The Ball AM this morning, saying “I’m just laughing so much”, with Fabinho coming in for widespread praise from other pundits in recent weeks.

Gary Neville sang the midfielder’s praises on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football [via This Is Anfield] earlier this season, while Paul Robinson told Football Insider that he thinks the Brazilian is “up there when it comes to the best holding midfielders in the Premier League”.

These Liverpool fans on Twitter took aim at Cunningham over his comments about Fabinho:
