Leeds fans slate Bamford after drawing another blank

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans have slated striker Patrick Bamford after his poor performance for the club in their 1-0 loss to Birmingham City on Saturday.

The striker missed a number of chances throughout the encounter, hitting the post once and also blazing over from close-range as Leeds suffered another blow in their attempts to win promotion to the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has scored six Championship goals in total this season but has not found the net in his last four outings.

Indeed, Leeds have begun to falter under the pressure of the promotion race, and have slipped eight points behind leaders Norwich City, while they sit one behind second-placed Sheffield United.

They are the only team in the top six to have lost two of their past five games and Leeds fans have slated the contribution of the forward after another disappointing result.

£110m might be the price Man United have to pay if they are serious about success: Opinion

Manchester United will be expected to make a big splash in the transfer market this summer as they look to build on some positive early signs under Ole Solskjaer.

The Norwegian manager is expected to be backed with some big money from the United board, and he will no doubt already have a list of targets drawn up who he thinks can come into Old Trafford and make a real difference.

One big area of concern for the club is in defence, where it has been clear for some time that United need some world class talent in order for them to compete with some of the other big spenders across Europe.

This weekend has seen the emergence of news surrounding Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, with United reportedly interested in paying the £110m fee that the Italian club value their powerhouse centre half at.

And here in the Tavern, we feel that spending this sort of money might be just what United need to do to ensure they keep pace with the top clubs in England and Europe.

We have seen over at Anfield the impact of having a commanding centre half can have, with Virgil Van Dijk making a huge difference for Liverpool this season.

Koulibaly could have the same sort of impact on proceedings at Old Trafford too, and he has already shown for Napoli just how good he can be.

United simply have to get someone in at the back who can dominate and set the tone of games from defence, and the big 27-year-old could well prove a real difference maker for the Red Devils next season.

Portsmouth: Perfect Easter weekend results sets Pompey up for promotion dream

For Portsmouth to have a successful Easter two things needed to happen. They had to win both their games, and teams around them had to drop points, and both happened.

Two 2-1 wins over Burton Albion and Coventry City and Sunderland dropping points against Peterborough have set Pompey up nicely for a chance at finishing the season inside an automatic promotion spot, with the south coast side two points off second place Barnsley with a game in hand.

As well as results going their way, the performances from Portsmouth over Easter were convincing for the fans. Pompey came from behind to win both games in the final 10 minutes, with the match against Burton being won with one of the final kicks of the game, and this mentality will be vital for the team heading into the final three matches of the season.

Had Pompey not managed six points from six over the Easter weekend, the league table would tell a different story for Portsmouth, but their ability to dig deep and turn games on their head in the dying moments has not only saved their season but has kept their incredible promotion goal alive.

With Sunderland up next in a match that could define Portsmouth’s promotion chances, going into that game off the back of two comeback wins will motivate Kenny Jackett’s side greatly, especially with the Black Cats stumbling yet again in the league at a crucial time.

Portsmouth fans, will Pompey secure an automatic promotion spot? Let us know!

Player Zone: Lucas Perez showing glimpses of why West Ham must keep him

[ad_pod ]

Last weekend West Ham were made to rue a costly error from the officials. With the club staring at an impressive win over Leicester, they had a goal criminally ruled out for offside, before the Foxes then equalised minutes later to seal a 2-2 draw.

It was a game which just about summed up the Hammers’ season. They’ve been on the wrong end of some horrible refereeing decisions and that was again the case on this occasion.

But a cameo from one man provided evidence of why it’s simply baffling that he’s been so out of favour under Manuel Pellegrini.

The player in question is Lucas Perez. He doesn’t create many headlines but he’s the type of player who, with game time, has the attributes to flourish in a midtable Premier League side.

Last weekend may have been all about his namesake, Ayoze Perez, but the West Ham man was also deserving of praise.

He played just 12 minutes from the bench, a position he’s become all too familiar with during his time in English football, but he was fantastic. He made clever runs in behind and was unfortunate not to score twice.

The Spaniard did find himself on the scoresheet once, tapping home from close range after being in the right place at the right time, but he was the unfortunate man at the centre of West Ham’s disallowed goal controversy.

It was an incredibly bright cameo, one which questions why he’s started just four times in the league this term. West Ham have plenty of talented strikers but with none finding consistency, perhaps he should have been the beneficiary.

Football FanCast sources revealed only last month that West Ham are planning a clear out of their strikers but Perez is someone who needs to stick around.

After all, the goals he’s scored for Deportivo La Coruna in Spain is evidence of his ability to perform in mid-table teams and that could be vital for a side like West Ham.

Before moving to Arsenal in 2016, he scored 17 goals for the La Liga outfit. He then notched eight goals and claimed six assists on loan at the same team last season.

He’s shown he’s a creative player and a hat-trick for Arsenal in the Champions League against Basel tells you all you need to know of his quality.

But perhaps it’s telling that players with European pedigree continue to underperform at West Ham. Maybe there’s a deeper rooted issue within the club.

Either way, Perez deserves more than the way he’s been treated in England and after his latest performance, Pellegrini needs to place more trust in him.

As the Irons gear up to take on Spurs, there’s a certain narrative in the air that a former Arsenal man could damage their top four hopes.

From a Gunners point of view, that may be too much to ask but they can certainly hope.

When the 5 ft 9 striker arrived in England in August 2016, Arsene Wenger told the Arsenal website; “He’s not only a goalscorer, he’s a guy who combines well with partners, who can give a final ball and makes good runs.”

And from his outing against Leicester that is evident, particularly with his willing runs.

Perez has a resilient nature about him and his career path shows how hard he’s had to work to be where he is. He’s made his way through Ukrainian football with Karpaty Lviv and Dynamo Kiev before also playing for Greek Super League side POAK.

It’s an interesting career path that’s led him to England but possibly now more than ever, he deserves a run in the Premier League. West Ham have nothing to play for between now and the end of the season and they could do far worse than turning to Perez to solve their attacking issues.

A move away looks as though it beckons and at the age of 30 it’s no surprise. However, his three goals from just four starts this term suggests there’s still something to work with.

The Chalkboard: Sam Gallagher must get last chance to save Southampton career

[ad_pod ]

Southampton striker Sam Gallagher has barely had a sniff of first-team action since Ralph Hasenhuttl arrived at the club in December, but with Premier League safety now assured he should hand the 23-year-old one final chance to save his Saints career against West Ham United this weekend.

On the chalkboard

Despite the 23-year-old still having two years remaining on his contract at St Mary’s, his future with the south coast outfit is surely in doubt.

The centre-forward would have been hoping to make a big impression for the top flight outfit this term following successful loan spells with Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, but it hasn’t happened for him.

While he has suffered injury niggles here and there he has still only featured for 30 minutes in the Premier League this season, and hasn’t even been in the squad for their previous four fixtures.

Give him an opportunity

It has hardly helped that the majority of Gallagher’s game time this term has been short cameos from the substitutes’ bench, and he deserves a start and a fair amount of time on the pitch to make an impression.

From last minute penalties to being taken apart by local rivals, fans pick the moments that defined their clubs’ seasons in the video below…

The 23-year-old has found himself behind the likes of Danny Ings, Shane Long and Charlie Austin in the pecking order in recent weeks, and it is difficult to see that changing next season – especially if Hasenhuttl signs another striker.

The 51-year-old should place his faith in the Devon-born player from the start for the dead rubber fixture against the Irons at the London Stadium on Saturday, to see if he has a future at St Mary’s beyond the current campaign.

If he impresses it shows he is worth working with during pre-season, but if he doesn’t it will signal to the club that he needs to be moved on.

Precedent set: Leeds fans demand Lawrence receives same treatment as Bamford

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans on Twitter are desperate to see Tom Lawrence handed a two-game ban following his alleged dive against West Brom on Sunday.

This comes just one week after Patrick Bamford was handed a suspension for simulation against Aston Villa, meaning he would miss the first leg of Leeds’ playoff final meeting against Derby.

It should come as no surprise that Leeds fans want Lawrence punished. The Welsh midfielder is instrumental at Pride Park. He has scored six times this season whilst also crafting two assists for teammates.

If the FA are to be consistent with their sanctions, then the former Leicester man would be out of both legs against the Whites.

It is unclear how the FA will rule on this one as there was slight contact on the 25-year-old which could see them decide in his favour.

The Derby man’s dive could change the entire course of Leeds’ season asthe Rams clinched sixth place ahead of Middlesbrough due to the subsequent converted penalty.

Here’s what Leeds fans have been saying on Twitter…

Leeds United: Carlos Corberan could be the perfect long-term replacement for Bielsa

It has been a roller-coaster of a season to be a Leeds United supporter, hasn’t it?

Following a disappointing year where the Whites slumped to a 13th place finish in the Championship, it was clear that the club needed a fresh approach and so Andrea Radrizzani decided to appoint Marcelo Bielsa last summer.

A managerial maverick, the 63-year-old brought a wealth of experience to Elland Road as well as a distinctive possession-based style of football which has transformed Leeds’ fortunes over the last 10 months.

Although the Yorkshire-based outfit missed out on automatic promotion in April, Bielsa will be hoping that he can lead the club back to the Premier League via the play-offs.

If they can overcome the likes of Derby County, Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion to secure their long-awaited return to the top flight, it is almost certain that the Argentine will remain in charge next season.

However, if Leeds cannot succeed in the knock-out competition, Bielsa’s future could be brought into question as it would not be at all surprising if he garners interest from elsewhere in Europe that could tempt him to call time on his stay in England.

If this is indeed the case, it could be argued that the Whites already have the perfect replacement for Bielsa at Thorp Arch.

Having joined the club in 2017 as Leeds’ under-23 manager, Carlos Corberan has revolutionised the fortunes of the side and capped off a fine season in March by winning the Professional Development League-North title.

Despite only being 36-years-old, the Spaniard has been given the chance to work with the first-team this season as their coach and is seemingly destined for big things in the future.

With Corberan preferring a similar style of play to Bielsa, it could be argued that the senior side will not have to make too many adjustments if he is given the opportunity to take over at Elland Road in the coming years.

What do you think Leeds fans? Is Corberan the ideal successor for Bielsa if the Argentine leaves the club? How impressed have you been with the under-23’s this season? Let us know below.

The Verdict: Is Michy Batshuayi the long-term answer to Palace’s striker problem?

[ad_pod ]

Roy Hodgson reiterated in his post-Bournemouth comments that Crystal Palace would love to extend Michy Batshuayi’s stay in south London after the Belgian struck twice against the Cherries, although this could well be taken out of the Eagles’ hands, with Chelsea under a transfer ban and therefore likely to be reluctant to sell players.

The striker has notched six times in 11 starts, outscoring all of Palace’s other options up front, and has gelled in well with the other members of the team, striking up a deadly partnership with wingers Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha.

This trio were at their very best at Selhurst Park last weekend, with Batshuayi scoring his side’s first two goals, Zaha having a hand in all five and Townsend netting the decider later on.

Should Crystal Palace keep hold of Max Meyer this summer? Harvey Jones discusses in the video below…

In Hodgson’s opinion, it would be a great shame if the Eagles strike-force were to be broken up this summer, as Palace seem to have found the missing piece in their jigsaw in the past few months, but are there better options out there? Football FanCast’s writers give their verdicts on whether 25-year-old Batshuayi is the man to lead the Palace line for the foreseeable future below…

Jack Saville

“I’m a huge fan of Batshuayi and I think it goes without saying that he’d be a massive upgrade on Christian Benteke. When he’s in the mood he is clinical inside the 18-yard-box and an intricate link-up player to have in the final-third. Whether Palace can afford him, of course, is a different story, but he should certainly be at the top of Hodgson’s wish list if he’s available at a reasonable price.”

Billy Meyers

“Since he arrived on loan from Chelsea back in January, Batshuayi has blown hot and cold. He has shown he can put the ball in the back of the net and has an excellent record in red and blue, whilst he will almost certainly hit double figures should he sign permanently. However, he has shown that he struggles as a lone striker at times, the system that Hodgson prefers. It would be an expensive gamble, of which Palace have made too many of recently; perhaps a delve into the Championship for someone like Che Adams would be a better idea.”

Matt Dawson

“Undoubtedly. Michy Batshuayi is a natural-born predator and his two goals on the final day of the season is a fine indication of what he can bring to the Palace side. They’ve looked a considerably better team when he’s started and should he be with the Eagles again next term then it would be a phenomenal sign of ambition. It might even convince Zaha to stick around.”

Newcastle United need to show who’s boss in pursuit of star Wilson

Newcastle are set to go head to head with Southampton and Brighton for the signature of Liverpool’s young star Harry Wilson.

Sky Sports News have reported that Liverpool would want up to £25million for the 22-year-old, who has impressed on a season-long loan spell at Derby County.

A whole host of English clubs are said to be admirers of the player, with Crystal Palace recently joining the pack as Wilfried Zaha looks likely to leave Selhurst Park this summer.

The young, versatile Wales international has contributed 18 goals in 52 appearances in all competition for the Rams this season, including a thumping free-kick at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup, and an important penalty in the play-off semi-final win against Leeds. Hence the reported widespread interest.

While the relatively large price tag slapped on Wilson would typically put Newcastle United off, with Mike Ashley’s scrooge-like approach to the transfer market proving to be an immovable barrier in the past, you’d expect them to win the race for the youngster if they pulled their fingers out got their heads down and took inspiration from the Almiron deal.

Especially since they’re apparently competing with the likes of Southampton, Brighton and Palace; all of whom we would consider to be “smaller” clubs.

To lose this race would not necessarily be catastrophic in the sense that they’re missing out on a decent player. Top players come and go. It would, however, be a huge hit to Rafael Benitez’s confidence and faith in the club’s market pulling power. Indeed, why exactly would he want to stick around if he doesn’t have access to any of the top players? It would be like signing his own death warrant.

Newcastle fans, how disappointed would you be if you were beaten to Wilson by any of the above? Surely it would be a very bad sign for your club? Let us know in the comments below…
