Palmeiras e Corinthians jogam final.

Steve Cook was Forest’s unsung hero

Nottingham Forest are through to the Championship play-off final after a dramatic ending to their two-leg challenge to beat Sheffield United to a trip to Wembley and potential promotion back into the Premier League for the first time in 23 years.

Steve Cooper’s side went all the way to penalties in a rollercoaster clash that saw Forest go 2-1 down (3-3 on aggregate) after 120 minutes, and the manager will surely be delighted that his team didn’t crumble under pressure.

Despite taking the victory at Bramall Lane in the first leg, the hosts struggled in open play throughout the game with less possession (48%), fewer shots on target and fewer big chances compared to their opponents who were desperate to deliver a response after a defeat at their home ground in the first half of the tie.

Brennan Johnson gave his team the lead early into the game with a 19th-minute strike at The City Ground to give supporters something to believe in, but in the second half of the game Sheffield United came out to prove a point and they put on a phenomenal display to get themselves back into the game.

Morgan Gibbs-White found the back of the net shortly after the second half kicked off, putting one past Brice Samba to even the scoreline and it didn’t end there because John Fleck kept United’s dream alive by scoring a second in the 75th minute to push Forest into extra time.

Neither team were able to find a goal in the added 30 minutes to seal the victory and as a result, a penalty shoot-out was the only way to determine a winner after an exhausting challenge for both sides.

Samba stepped up when it mattered most to give Nottingham Forest the golden opportunity to push for promotion, saving three Sheffield United penalties to send his team to North-West London with only one game against Huddersfield Town standing in the way of Forest securing a spot in the Premier League after over two decades away from the top-flight.

One player who was Cooper’s unsung hero in the second leg of the semi-final was Steve Cook who scored the winning penalty that has destroyed Paul Heckingbottom’s dreams of promotion for another season.

Cook was hailed “unbelievable” by journalist Callum Castel-Nuovo and for good reason as it wasn’t just his winning penalty that stood out on Tuesday evening, with the 31-year-old putting on a defensive performance that oozed resilience, influencing the team to take the game as far as they needed to secure their win.

According to SofaScore, the defender won 12 of his aerial and ground duels combined, making six clearances, two interceptions and two tackles, as well as completing 100% of his dribbles, proving that he was a solid presence in the Forest back-line and committed himself to getting the job done.

Cooper will now look ahead to their difficult final game of the season with Huddersfield Town and the occasion could be an overwhelming achievement for the manager if they win. it could be the ultimate fairytale for Forest who were at the bottom of the Championship table before he arrived in September.

Sunderland could find Neil 2.0 in Sohna

Sunderland have enjoyed a brilliant start to life back in the Championship as they sit eighth in the table after eight games in the division.

They have only lost three matches in the second tier after winning promotion from League One – via the play-offs – in the 2021/22 campaign.

The likes of Ross Stewart and Alex Pritchard have predictably impressed but another player who has established themselves as a regular in the team is academy product, Daniel Neil.

He has started seven of the club’s eight matches in the league and recently put in a monstrous performance against Norwich City, who are second in the table. The central midfielder recorded a SofaScore rating of 8.0 as he won 11 of his 17 individual duels and made a whopping eight tackles and three interceptions, whilst also creating three chances.

This comes after Neil started 31 times in League One last season on the club’s way to promotion out of the third tier. He has made the breakthrough from the youth set-up and made himself a key member of the first-team squad, showing that there is a pathway for young players at the Academy of Light.

Tony Mowbray could now unearth the next Daniel Neil in central midfielder Harrison Sohna, who joined the club from Premier League side Aston Villa in the summer of 2021.

He was handed his full first-team debut by former manager Alex Neil last month as he started in the 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup. Although it was a disappointing result for the Black Cats, the 20-year-old did catch the eye as he made four tackles and interceptions and won 100% of his aerial battles in the middle of the park.

Sohna also had a taste of first-team football as he played three matches in the EFL Trophy last season. He averaged 1.7 tackles and interceptions per game, whilst also completing 88% of his attempted passes, in fixtures against Lincoln, Bradford and Manchester United’s youth team.

These statistics suggest that he is a combative midfielder who can also pick out a pass, which makes him similar to Neil in that he can make an impact on and off the ball from that position.

Journalist Josh Bunting recently described him as being “sharp” and claimed that he was “excellent” as he caught the eye in a pre-season friendly.

The 20-year-old’s performances in the build-up to the current campaign clearly impressed Alex Neil enough to convince him that the gem was ready to make his first-team debut, suggesting that he may have the potential to be a regular in the future.

If Sohna can continue to develop and hone his skills in the coming weeks and months then he could end up being the next Daniel Neil to make the step up to the first team in midfield, putting in ‘excellent’ displays week-in-week-out for the Black Cats.

West Ham had a howler with Albian Ajeti

West Ham United have endured a catalogue of failed signings over the last decade or so, with the GSB era having been littered with a whole host of questionable additions who subsequently went on to underwhelm in east London.

The recruitment in the forward ranks has been particularly head-scratching, with one striker after another having struggled to make the grade for the Hammers, with the centre-forward berth developing into something of a poisoned chalice in recent times.

One such dismal capture was that of Swiss international Albian Ajeti, with the 6 foot marksman having endured a wholly forgettable stint at the London Stadium, spending just a solitary season at the club before quickly being moved on.

Having previously been in prolific form for FC Basel – where he netted 43 goals and provided 21 assists in just 96 games – the 11-cap gem looked to be a potentially astute acquisition for then-boss Manuel Pellegrini, with the Irons forking out £8m for his signature in the summer of 2019.

As it proved, that was a largely wasted investment as the one-time Augsburg man went on to make just 12 appearances in all competitions over the next 12 months, failing to score in his 399 minutes of competitive action.

The only saving grace following that frankly anonymous spell in a claret and blue jersey was the fact that the club were able to spare their blushes somewhat by recouping a £5m transfer upon his departure to Celtic, albeit while still taking a minor loss on the initial price tag.

That decision to allow a swift departure has since been vindicated with the £2.25m-rated man having struggled to secure a regular role at Parkhead, scoring just nine goals in 48 games across all fronts since his arrival in August 2020.

Last season proved particularly underwhelming as the 25-year-old scored just three times in 17 outings under Ange Postecoglou, with his at times “lazy” approach – as described by pundit Frank McAvennie – doing him little favours under the current Hoops boss.

Unsurprisingly, the Scottish champions were keen to move him on this summer after a frustrating two-year spell in Glasgow, with the Old Firm side finally getting their wish as he joined Sturm Graz on loan late in the window.

The Hammers – as well as the Hoops – must no doubt be questioning their decision to ever sign Ajeti in the first place, with his addition having proven something of a howler as far they are concerned.

Expert drops Sunderland takeover claim

A finance expert has now dropped a big claim on a potential takeover at Sunderland.

The Lowdown: Storey offer

As per The Daily Mail, William Storey wants to buy out all four shareholders at the Stadium of Light in a £42m deal.

The British businessman attempted to buy a controlling stake in the Wearside club back in 2020 before Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, and it is understood that the latter has rejected his advances.

However, the Madrox trio of Stewart Donald, Juan Sartori and Charlie Methven are all thought to be keen to sell up.

The Latest: Expert reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley has claimed that £42m is a ‘fair price’ for the Black Cats, but the value could rise to as much as ‘£200m’ should they go all the way back up to the Premier League:

“I think it’s a fair price for where they are at the moment.

“I’ve done some digging on industry standards in the past. It’s not an exact science but all the metrics would value them at somewhere between £40m and £50m.

“That is very high for a League One club, but it is representative of their potential for growth. If they do go up, you could conceivably add another £10m or £20m onto that valuation. That would put them closer to £60m to £80m.

“So, it does vary depending on league status but the price does show the size and scale of the club.

“You have to put revenue into the mix. If they got to the Premier League, you are adding another £100m overnight. It could then become a £180m or £200m club.

“It’s got a considerable fanbase and a lot of infrastructure in place. That is why investors might be looking at them now. It’s a good proposition.”

The Verdict: Wait for final

SAFC should really be waiting until after the League One play-off final before entertaining any such offer from Storey.

If they were to get promoted up to the Championship, then the club would instantly be worth more money, and so they would need to get the highest value possible if they were to sell up.

Nonetheless, it seems as if Louis-Dreyfus will need some more persuading anyway, but it is good that they at least have options ahead of the new season.

Everton should’ve had penalty before red

Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett has now spotted a huge injustice for Everton before Jarrad Branthwaite was given a red card against Brentford.

The Lowdown: Damaging defeat for Everton

It was a damaging result for Frank Lampard’s team at Goodison Park as they fell to a 3-2 defeat, having eventually being reduced to nine men after Salomon Rondon was also sent off.

It means that they still need to get a win against either Crystal Palace or Arsenal in order to guarantee their place in the top flight for 2022/23.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Richarlison had converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time to put the Toffees 2-1 ahead, but it appears that the Brazilian ought to already have had the chance to score from the spot before then.

The Latest: Should Everton have had a second penalty?

Replying to a fan on Twitter, Hackett has claimed that Everton should also have been given a penalty for the pulling of Richarlison’s shirt in the box just a few seconds before Branthwaite was sent off, at which point the Toffees were leading 1-0.

The former top-flight official insisted: “Yes it was. Richarlison having his shirt nearly wrapped off should have been penalised.”

The Verdict: Frustrating

It will be very frustrating for Everton to know that they perhaps should have had a penalty before Branthwaite’s red card, which would ultimately have cancelled out the sending off and given them a chance to go 2-0 up in the game inside 20 minutes.

In the end, the defender’s early dismissal cost them as the Toffees ended up losing, which could well be the difference between staying up and suffering relegation.

Nonetheless, Lampard and his team must now put this game behind them and focus on trying to get the three points against Palace, which would ultimately keep them up.

Liverpool must sign Mbappe

This could be quite the summer for Liverpool who will be aiming to achieve something that very few will think is possible; becoming an even better team.

Although a Premier League title triumph is now against the odds for Jurgen Klopp’s side, the Reds could still come away from this season with a treble, something that would be finalised by winning the Champions League final in Paris against Real Madrid.

Liverpool will seek revenge for that horrible night in 2018 when Loris Karius endured a nightmare between the sticks but the two European heavyweights could go toe to toe in the transfer market too.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

That’s because the pair are both interested in signing Kylian Mbappe.

The £144m-rated superstar is set to become a free agent this summer if he doesn’t renew his contract in the French capital, with Madrid believed to be one of the clubs keen to secure his signature.

Reports from France a few days ago claimed Klopp’s men had entered ‘the dance’ to sign the player and if he arrives in Merseyside, it would be an incredible piece of business.

Their title rivals Manchester City have already secured a move for Erling Haaland but this deal would surely one-up the Citizens.

For starters, the 23-year-old has been phenomenal in front of goal this term, finding the back of the net on 36 occasions, seven more times than Haaland. Mbappe also has a whopping 26 assists, 18 more than the Norwegian hitman.

With that in mind, it’s hardly a surprise to hear Jonathan Woodgate suggest he could take on a certain Virgil van Dijk and succeed.

Speaking to the BBC, the former defender once said: “The pace of Kylian Mbappe would frighten any defender, including Virgil van Dijk. He is that quick.”

The PSG attacker is in a world of his own when it comes to offensive threat and beating his marker for ease but there are parallels that can be drawn.

Indeed, the most similar player to Mbappe according to FB Ref is his fellow countryman Karim Benzema, a man with 44 goals in as many games this term.

A deeper look at the numbers tells you there are more parallels between the two than just goalscoring, though.

Both of them average 41% of their shots on target whilst their non-penalty expected goals per 90 sit between 0.53 and 0.56.

Their shot-creating actions are also similar with Mbappe managing 4.94 to Benzema’s 4.28 per 90 minutes. Finally, they take nearly the same number of touches on average too, with the PSG star taking 58 and the Real Madrid goal machine taking 53 every 90 minutes.

With that in mind, he’d clearly be an extraordinary acquisition and one FSG must seal if the Reds want to continue making more history.

Rangers contract news on Connor Goldson

Alan Hutton has revealed what Connor Goldson has now told him amid uncertainty over his future at Glasgow Rangers.

The Lowdown: Goldson out of contract

The 29-year-old is among a few first-team players at Ibrox who are out of contract soon, with no signs of a renewal at the moment.

As cited by the The Glasgow Times, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has admitted that there is a ‘small’ chance’ that the defender will sign an extension after prolonged talks with the club.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Hutton reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Light Blues right-back Hutton has revealed that, having spoken to Goldson, the centre-back ‘wants’ to stay at the club despite not being able to agree on a new deal.

Hutton, who now does punditry work with Rangers TV, said of the 29-year-old: “He is one of the main men in the squad. It’s quite as simple as that. He’s the vice-captain, a guy who plays week in, week out, he’s always fit and a leader on the pitch.

“It’s one of those ones where he probably wants to stay at the club. After speaking to him a few times myself, I know that he loves being there and he wants to be there in the future.

“But you have to reward these players for what they’ve given the club over the last X amount of seasons. I think that’s the sticking point at this moment in time.”

The Verdict: Get it done

With time running out, both parties just need to get a new contract sorted as soon as possible.

Goldson has been a mainstay in the Rangers team which won the Scottish Cup and reached the final of the Europa League, scoring four goals and supplying four assists from the back (Transfermarkt), and he is in his prime at 29 years of age.

He currently holds a market value of £7.2m, so losing someone of his quality on a free transfer would be a financial blow to the Gers, while also losing a key player from Van Bronckhorst’s side.

West Brom eye move for Lewis O’Brien

West Bromwich Albion have already made their first signing after securing a deal for John Swift in their pursuit to overhaul the squad this summer and now they could be set to make their next signing as a new transfer target has been reported.

What’s the latest?

According to TEAMtalk, West Brom are one of the clubs interested in signing Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien.

As per the report, the Baggies join a number of clubs who are huge admirers of the player with Leeds United and Sheffield United both also named as potential suitors, with O’Brien’s release clause currently speculated to be set at just £12m.

Fulham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth also have taken an interest in the Yorkshire club’s vice-captain too.

Morrison 2.0

West Brom want to compete for promotion back to the Premier League following a disappointing first season back in the Championship and signing players like Lewis O’Brien will certainly put them in good stead to compete.

The £3.1m-rated gem who was hailed as a “very special” player by Huddersfield boss Carlos Corberan has offered the output of a complete midfielder this season.

He has scored three goals, contributed three assists and created four big chances, making one key pass and registering 2.2 tackles on average per game. That’s on top of winning the majority of his duels combined (56%) being successful in completing the majority of his dribble attempts in his 43 Championship appearances.

It is no wonder that the powers at the Hawthorns see him as a desirable candidate to take West Brom back to the Premier League next season as his performances at Huddersfield Town this season reflect similar attributes to former Baggies midfielder and club legend James Morrison, as they both have dominated the centre of the pitch confidently.

Like Morrison, he offers similar versatility with the pair proving adept at playing in the middle of the park or out on the wings.

With that being said, Steve Bruce will need to offer the Terriers star something special to convince him with a move to Albion.

He’ll need to sell the project he is working on to the player as O’Brien currently has tempting interest from clubs that are already in the Premier League.

Newcastle plotting Nabil Fekir swoop

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Nabil Fekir heading into the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to the Sunday Mirror, via TEAMtalk, PIF are plotting a bid to sign the Real Betis man and will face a challenge from Arsenal to land his signature.

The report claims that he will be available for a fee in the region of £30m, although it remains to be seen how much the Magpies are willing to pay for him.

Hatem Ben Arfa 2.0

PIF can land the new exciting French attacking midfielder at St. James’ Park by bringing Fekir to the club this summer.

Both players are left-footed magicians who mainly play in the number 10 position or out wide on the right – cutting in on their preferred foot. Ben Arfa was a magical player to watch for the Toon as he scored and assisted goals and got fans off their seats with his creativity, which is exactly what Fekir can provide next season.

Over the last 365 days, Fekir has completed 1.89 dribbles and 5.29 shot-creating actions per 90. In La Liga, he averaged a phenomenal SofaScore rating of 7.26 as he scored six goals and provided eight assists, which proves that he can have a big impact in the final third, just like another Frenchman once had on Tyneside.

Ben Arfa completed 2.0 dribbles per game in his first full Premier League season at the club and chipped in with five goals and five assists playing in the number 10 role or off the right.

He was a constant threat cutting in on his left foot and Fekir’s statistics suggest that he will be able to offer a similar, potentially even higher, level of quality in midfield.

Real Betis’ club president Angel Haro previously showered the gem with praise, saying: “He is doing magnificently well. He is a champion of the world with tremendous quality. When you see him move with the ball, glued to his foot, you know he is going to do something genius.”

These comments highlight his creativity and why he will be able to get the fans off their seats. His aforementioned stats and these comments prove that he has the technical ability to commit defenders and make things happen at the top end of the pitch, which is why he can be an excellent signing for Newcastle.
