As duas equipes voltam a campo no próximo domingo.

O Glorioso voltou do intervalo marcando território.

Henriques and Burns hospitalised after collision

Sussex’s Natwest T20 Blast fixture with Surrey was abandoned after 18.4 overs following a collision between Surrey’s Rory Burns and Moises Henriques when attempting to take a high catch

Will Macpherson at Arundel14-Jun-20151:41

‘The medics were on immediately’

Moises Henriques suffered a broken jaw in three places and Rory Burns facial injuries after the two collided in a sickening blow that saw both left unconscious and hospitalised and Surrey’s match against Sussex at Arundel abandoned after 18.4 overs.Until Steffan Piolet top-edged an innocuous Tom Curran delivery into the offside, this had been an unremarkable afternoon at Arundel. But as Burns, running in from deep cover and Henriques, peddling back from point, collided at pace and with their eyes on the ball, completely unaware of the other’s locality, its entire complexion changed. The severity of the situation was immediately clear, as both players lay motionless on the ground and their Surrey team-mates gestured and called for help. That help arrived instantly, as an ambulance and medical staff rolled onto the field and the remaining players took their leave.Henriques’ jaw had collided with Burns’ cheek, lacerating his face and leaving Henriques with a broken jaw. An update from Surrey on Sunday evening said he was awaiting surgery while Burns would need stitches on “head and facial” injuries. Both had been knocked unconscious by the collision and placed in neck braces and on spinal boards, while being given oxygen and intravenous painkillers.Concern among the 8,500-strong crowd grew as the group around the players expanded. More medics arrived, a second and third ambulance, Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart paced about and captain Gareth Batty remained by his team-mates’ side, utterly helpless. The rest of the players stood huddled on the boundary on the far side of the ground. After 30 minutes or more, there was progress as Australian international Henriques was lifted, on a stretcher, into an ambulance, waving an arm as he did so. A minute later and the ambulance was on the move. Ten more minutes and Burns – who lay motionless longer and whose situation had initially appeared far more serious – was stretchered into an ambulance as well, offering a double thumbs up with his father by his side. Both players were sat upright by the time they left the ground.”Both players weren’t with it when we got out there, but by the time they left the ground they were conscious,” said Sussex physio John Marrale. As the second ambulance crossed the boundary, the announcement of the game’s abandonment was made official. Not a word was uttered in protest. The players were whisked off on the 10-mile journey to St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, where Henriques’ jaw was x-rayed and Burns – while waiting to see a maxillofacial surgeon – was chatting to hospital staff. More will be learned of their condition on Monday, when Surrey are set to start a County Championship match against Northamptonshire at Guildford. The game will go ahead as scheduled.”Two people were injured but the impact went right across the game,” said Sussex chief executive Zac Toumazi. “The decision to call the game off was an easy one and everyone responded as quickly as possible. It was important that the measures that we have in place, that were tested, worked. The number one priority was the players’ welfare.”A vast crowd had rammed into the most idyllic of all the English outgrounds, but they aired no disappointment at the fixture’s abandonment. A signing session was organised and while most Surrey players left swiftly, Kevin Pietersen – who was playing his last game on English soil, perhaps ever – stayed with Sussex’s Mahela Jayawardene to sign autographs and pose for selfies.Sussex captain Luke Wright described it as an “easy decision”, while umpires Alex Wharf and Jeremy Lloyds had no hesitation in contacting Lord’s and calling the fixture off. There was no alternative course of action and the officials – whether medical or cricketing – handled a horrid situation outstandingly.Lloyds described the incident as “horrendous” and said he had never seen anything of the sort in 40 years as a first-class cricketer and umpire. “You knew there was something horribly wrong as Rory was flat out,” he said. “It was like slow motion, you felt helpless. The response was absolutely brilliant and the paramedics were out very quickly.”Wharf said: “It’s a horrific situation for the players and we wish them a speedy recovery. Player safety is paramount – we spoke to Lord’s and the ECB and got their gauge but we knew straight away that something horrific had happened and our chances of playing again were very slim.”The long shadow cast by the death of Henriques’ friend and team-mate Phillip Hughes in Sydney in November last year meant quiet panic was quick to break out among the crowd at Arundel. The incident bore more resemblance to Jason Gillespie’s collision with Steve Waugh against Sri Lanka in 1999 but the poor state of both players in this case meant the snap reaction was to fear the worst. That an umpire in Israel has been killed and a policeman in India blinded by balls since Hughes’ passing only heightens such fears and reminds of the game’s inherent dangers. This incident will once more be labelled freakish, with the blow sickening, the impact audible and the aftermath – with concern growing as fast as the number of medical staff – horrible.Thankfully, this will be filed under near misses and the signs – if nascent – are hopeful. While a period of recovery will be required for both players – Chris Rogers has missed a whole Test series with the effects of a concussion – the worst appears to have been averted. As the crowd filtered out and the afternoon wore on, Arundel – and the game of cricket – exhaled a great sigh of relief.

Mathews builds commanding position for Sri Lanka

Angelo Mathews was the rock in Sri Lanka’s middle order once again, soaking up all the pressure Pakistan created, and rebuilding from 35 for 3 to take the hosts to a commanding position

The Report by Abhishek Purohit05-Jul-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAngelo Mathews led another recovery effort•AFP

Angelo Mathews was the rock in Sri Lanka’s middle order once again, soaking up all the pressure Pakistan created, and rebuilding from 35 for 3 to take the hosts to a commanding position. Upul Tharanga, Jehan Mubarak and Dinesh Chandimal supported their captain as Sri Lanka gradually stretched their lead to 291 until bad light ended play on another rain-hit day.It was typical Mathews resistance, blocking and blocking most of whatever Pakistan hurled at him, working the ball into gaps for singles and twos, and exploding into the odd emphatic boundary against the run of play. The few times he was beaten during his 177-ball stay, he shrugged and concentrated harder.Smart Stats

3 Sri Lankan bowlers who took three wickets during the first innings – Dhammika Prasad, Nuwan Pradeep and Tharindu Kaushal. This is the first time three Sri Lankan bowlers have taken three wickets each in a home Test.

3 Wicket-keepers who have scored 1000-plus Test runs at an average of 50 or more – Andy Flower, AB de Villiers and Sarfraz Ahmed. Sarfraz has now scored 1157 runs in 18 Tests at an average of 50.30, including three hundreds and seven fifties.

11 Instances since 2011 where Sri Lanka have lost their first two wickets for 25 runs or less in a home Test, the second-most for any Test nation after West Indies, who have suffered this fate on 17 occasions. Sri Lanka were 22 for 2 in their second innings in Pallekele.

0 Runs scored by Imran Khan in five Tests. No other player (as of today) has played more than three Tests without scoring a single run. It is, however, worth noting that Imran has only played two innings in these five Tests. He was dismissed for a duck during Pakistan’s first innings this Test.

1 Number of Sri Lankan batsmen who have scored 500-plus runs at a 50-plus average when batting at No. 5 – Angelo Mathews is the only one. Second and third on the list are Aravinda de Silva (48.45) and Thilan Samaraweera (47.59)

The pitch slowed down as the day progressed, although the legspinner Yasir Shah started turning and bouncing it from the line of off. Although Yasir gave it everything in a 25-over spell of 2 for 70, Sri Lanka dearly needed this effort from their captain to recover from the jolts Rahat Ali and co had delivered.Sri Lanka had taken two overs to dismiss last man Imran Khan in the morning, making absolutely no attempt to target Sarfraz Ahmed, who was left stranded on 78. But Rahat led a stirring fightback from Pakistan after they had conceded a 63-run first-innings lead.Ehsan Adil played his part but Rahat was the standout bowler for Pakistan, bowling with sustained pace and control, varying his lengths and extracting bounce and movement off the pitch and in the air.Consistently taking it away from the left-handers, Rahat straightened two rippers past the defenses of Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne, the latter’s 11-ball duck ending with a swinging yorker.Using the short ball sparingly, Rahat created doubts in the minds of the batsmen, and both Karunaratne and Thirimanne were caught half-forward after being beaten numerous times. Thirimanne was also hit on the base of the arm guard as he ducked into a lifter, and had to take treatment on the field.Adil created similar issues for the right-handed Silva, hitting a tight line and length outside off and moving it away. Silva is a difficult batsman to bowl to, his tendency to play with soft hands ensuring most edges don’t carry to the cordon. But the kind of effort Pakistan were putting, and the zip they were generating, even Silva could not avoid nicking one for Misbah-ul-Haq to take a sharp, low catch at first slip.Rain reprieved Sri Lanka immediately after the third wicket fell, and Tharanga and Mathews batted positively upon resumption in the few overs until lunch.Mathews survived a review for leg-before off Rahat at the stroke of lunch, but Pakistan did not review when Imran hit Tharanga’s pad first ball after the interval. They were probably confused by the two sounds, but one of them was that of Tharanga’s bat crashing into his pad. Tharanga was on 29 then, and went on to hit a few more boundaries in a 47-ball 48 before popping one off the inside edge to short leg off Yasir.Rahat, in such fine rhythm in the first session, was introduced in the second only after Tharanga fell. His second and third spells lacked the threat of the first, and it was Adil who created problems for Mubarak with a hint of reverse, beating the left-hander often outside off.Mubarak was solid after another shower forced tea to be taken early, and played some superbly-timed drives through extra cover. Mubarak and Mathews doubled the score from 80 for 4 till the former fell in the short-leg trap to Yasir for 35.Chandimal’s arrival quickened the pace of scoring, and he comfortably worked the ball off the back foot as Pakistan started to flag. He progressed to 39 smoothly, and with Mathews inching to 77, Sri Lanka’s lead was in touching distance of 300. Only twice has a target more than that been achieved in a Test in Sri Lanka, and a visiting side has never done it.

Rogério Caboclo e Fernando Sarney representaram a CBF.

Watson dropped, Haddin withdraws

Australia’s selectors have chosen to drop Shane Watson after also learning that Brad Haddin will miss the second Ashes Test at Lord’s for personal reasons

Daniel Brettig14-Jul-20152:07

Brettig: A massive blow to the team psyche

Australia’s selectors have chosen to drop the allrounder Shane Watson after also learning that the wicketkeeper Brad Haddin will miss the second Ashes Test at Lord’s for personal reasons. Peter Nevill, 29, will make his Test debut in Haddin’s absence while Mitchell Marsh is set for inclusion at Watson’s expense.Haddin will remain on the tour and there is no suggestion that he is retiring, but it is now hard to see Watson returning to the Test team now that the selection chairman Rod Marsh and the coach Darren Lehmann have decided to go with Marsh. The decision on Watson was brought about by his poor first Test at Cardiff and a recent run of indifferent performances in the long form of the game. He has not made a century since the Perth Test in December 2013, and has also failed to make a significant enough impact with the ball to merit a place. In Cardiff Watson was twice out lbw, a vivid reminder of an enduring blind spot in his technique.Marsh has meanwhile shown signs of significant progress, doubling his tally of first-class centuries with a pair of bold innings during the tour warm-up fixtures against Kent and Essex while also demonstrating a more mature approach off the field. Marsh has played four Tests for Australia, but this is the first time he has been chosen directly ahead of Watson.Earlier on Tuesday, Haddin was seen in conversation with Lehmann in the Pavilion and did not emerge from the dressing room to go to the nets. Haddin was also spoken to by the team psychologist Michael Lloyd. Meanwhile the reserve gloveman Nevill was talking to Rod Marsh in the Nursery End nets amid a range of conferences among Australian players and staff. The captain Michael Clarke had his head bowed as the news was relayed to him after he had batted. Nevill and Haddin, both New South Welshmen, have a close relationship, with Haddin saying earlier on this tour he was delighted to have Nevill as his reserve and potential replacement. It is not the first time that Haddin has been forced to absent himself from national duty due to personal reasons. In 2012 he withdrew from a tour of the West Indies due to the ill health of his daughter, Mia, and subsequently spent six months out of the game. He returned to the New South Wales team in time for the 2012-13 summer, and fought his way back into the first-choice wicketkeeping spot in time for the 2013 Ashes tour.Haddin went on to be a major contributor to the Australian 5-0 sweep of England in the home summer of 2013-14, playing a series of outlandish and effective innings with the bat while also being integral to the team as Clarke’s vice-captain and a mentor to younger players. It was Haddin’s preference last summer for Steve Smith to replace him as vice-captain when Clarke was injured and thus take the role of stand-in leader. Haddin was then a part of the World Cup-winning team before retiring from limited overs matches on the eve of the current Ashes tour.Nevill has played one match on tour, against Essex at Chelmsford, and will now become the 443rd Australian Test cricketer. He has impressed good judges with his combination of sound glove work and attractive batting, and scored 78 against Essex. The loss of Haddin is a blow to Australia’s hopes of levelling the series at Lord’s, even if he endured a difficult match in the first Test at Cardiff, dropping Joe Root on the first morning of the match and twice falling for low scores as the tourists tumbled to a 169-run defeat.Watson has enjoyed a more or less uninterrupted run in the Test team since Lehmann took over from Mickey Arthur as coach in 2013, missing three matches due to minor injuries. However his returns as a batsman have not warranted a place – only three times past 50 in his past 18 innings – and his bowling returns have also trailed off, tallying only 13 wickets in his past 22 Tests. He had been dropped from the ODI team during the World Cup earlier this year, but was swiftly reinstated after one game and went on to play a pivotal role for Australia in victories over Sri Lanka and Pakistan. It is difficult to see him returning to the Test team this time, however.

McClenaghan leads NZ to second victory

New Zealand’s Midas touch at this World Twenty20 continued in Dharamsala, where they took their tournament record to two wins from two matches with an eight-run victory over Australia

The Report by Brydon Coverdale18-Mar-2016

New Zealand’s Midas touch at this World Twenty20 continued in Dharamsala, where they took their tournament record to two wins from two matches with an eight-run victory over Australia. Having spun India out in Nagpur, New Zealand made one change to their side, bringing in the fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan to replace the spinner Nathan McCullum. McClenaghan duly took 3 for 17 and played a significant role in derailing Australia’s innings.Australia, by comparison, seemed confused at the selection table. They picked two specialist spinners to complement allrounder Glenn Maxwell but those two men – Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa – bowled only one over each. The No.1 batsman on the ICC’s T20 international rankings, Aaron Finch, was also left out, as was Josh Hazlewood. Australia’s performance was far from disastrous, as the margin suggests, but neither did they seem entirely cohesive.Another strange call was the decision to send Agar in ahead of Australia’s most renowned finisher, James Faulkner, with 43 needed off 30 balls and five wickets in hand. Agar scored 9 off eight balls, and Faulkner did not get to face a ball until there were 21 needed off 10 balls. That was in the penultimate over of the chase of 143, an over in which McClenaghan took two big wickets, those of Agar and Mitchell Marsh for 24. From 22 needed off 12, Australia soon needed 19 off the last over.Corey Anderson was given the responsibility by Kane Williamson and had Faulkner caught in the deep first ball; Australia’s finisher was finished, and so were their hopes. Earlier, Williamson had won the toss and chose to bat on a dry surface that both captains expected would become slower, and New Zealand’s 142 for 8 proved adequate.Usman Khawaja, selected to open alongside Shane Watson, gave Australia an encouraging start and was picking gaps at will, but his run-out on 38 from 27 balls was a turning point. Adam Milne’s throw from the deep to the bowler Grant Elliott caught the diving Khawaja just short, and Australia were 62 for 3 in the ninth over, their momentum rapidly deserting them. The rest of the batsmen struggled to get in on the slow pitch.Mitchell Santner’s first two overs had been outstanding, continuing his form from the win over India. Just as he had Rohit Sharma, Santner deceived Smith with a beautiful delivery that dropped and turned past the edge as Smith danced down the crease. Luke Ronchi completed the stumping, Smith was gone for 6, and Santner soon added the wicket of David Warner to his collection as well.McClenaghan had picked up the first wicket, with Watson caught off a slower ball for 13, and he returned later to remove Mitchell Marsh and Agar. Marsh had struck a couple of sixes to give Australia hope but once he and Glenn Maxwell, who played so many reverse shots he seemed at times to be a proper if out-of-touch left-hander, departed, New Zealand were firmly in control. They had seemed to be in complete control early in their own innings, at 58 for 0 from six overs. New Zealand’s left-arm spinner was Santner but his Australian counterpart was the one delivering gifts. Agar, with all of one match and two overs behind him in his T20 international career, bowled the third over and was understandably nervous. So much so that his first two balls were full tosses that Martin Guptill duly smashed for six.Another six to end Agar’s over left him with figures of 0 for 18 from six balls, and he was not asked to bowl another one for the rest of the innings. In fact, Smith’s use of his spinners was rather curious all round. Australia chose all the spinners in their squad, from A to Z, but the rest of the alphabet did all the work. After Agar, Zampa bowled one over of legspin and cost just three runs, but like Agar was not called upon again.Smith got three overs out of Maxwell but mostly relied on his fast and medium options. They were effective enough, helping to restrict New Zealand to 142 for 8 after Guptill got them away to a flying start. Guptill raced to 39 from 27 deliveries but was the first man to fall, holing out to deep midwicket off Faulkner’s bowling. Faulkner picked up two wickets, as did Maxwell, but Watson and Marsh also kept things tight.New Zealand’s batsmen kept making starts only to get caught going for the big shot. Williamson skied one for 24. Anderson slogged down the ground for 3. Colin Munro, tied down by Marsh, pulled to deep midwicket for 23 to end an entertaining innings that featured effective reverse hitting. Ross Taylor was taken at deep midwicket for 11, as was Ronchi for 6. Had Australia been on a fishing trawler they could hardly have hoped for more catches in the deep. But New Zealand had enough runs in the end and with two wins from two matches, and games against Pakistan and Bangladesh to come, they ended the night terrifically placed to reach the semi-finals. Australia, like India, have some thinking to do.

Ireland’s seam bowler Craig Young has joined Hampshire on a short-term loan deal in their first response to a crippling early-season injury crisis.Young, 26, will get an outing in Hampshire’s Second XI Championship match against Somerset at the Ageas Bowl, starting on Monday, in the hope of forcing himself into contention for the home Championship match against Middlesex on May 1.Young was previously on the books at Sussex but had a frustrating time with injuries and never graduated beyond 2nd XI cricket. He has played 24 times for Ireland across three formats.Ireland coach John Bracewell said: “Craig will continue his progression as one of Ireland’s front-line bowlers after a very good spell, especially over the last 12 months.”With the North-West Warriors not having any championship cricket until late May and Ireland not in action until June, we feel the timing is ideal for Craig and hope he can aid Hampshire’s significant injury problems.”Young said: “The request has come from completely left field. But it’s great to be given a chance, which I hope I can grab with both hands.”Two years ago, he suggested that he had the pace and bounce to fill the void left for Ireland by Boyd Rankin. He took five wickets on ODI debut, against Scotland, and was Ireland’s top wicket-taker on a World Cup acclimatisation tour in Australia and New Zealand.Hampshire’s current injury crisis includes fast-bowler Fidel Edwards, who suffered a fractured ankle at Headingley this week whilst fellow seamers Reece Topley, Gareth Berg and Ryan Stevenson are all still not available for selection due to injury.Hampshire’s director of cricket Giles White told The Echo: “Craig comes as a recommendation from John Bracewell and, in light of the current injury problems we have, this gives us a good opportunity to take a closer look at him.”
