Zimbabwe’s plans for a third Test ground in the country to complement those in Harare and Bulawayo are set to come to fruition after the Victoria Falls local council granted planning approval for a stadium near the iconic site. Zimbabwe Cricket chief executive Ozias Bvute and chairman of selectors Alistair Campbell confirmed the council approval, and said that construction work will begin early next year.”This is one of the great natural wonders of the world and playing international and first-class cricket there will cause a lot of excitement among visiting players and fans,” said Bvute. “Tourism is on the up in this country and sporting tourism especially so.”We had eight or nine thousand for a recent Twenty20 tournament in Harare and that has given us additional confidence to go ahead, apart from other factors,” added Campbell. “People now go to Dubai for cricket. We will soon be an alternative to that. There is a lot of vision here at the moment.”As well as hosting Tests and ODIs, the ground will also provide a second home, after Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, for domestic side Matabeleland Tuskers. In addition, ZC are hoping that other teams – particularly English representative and county sides – will be attracted to use the facilities for pre-season tours.Widely considered to be one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Victoria Falls sits on the Zambezi river on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and is also a World Heritage site. At the height of Zimbabwe’s tourism industry it attracted several hundred thousand visitors a year. Those numbers dwindled as the country’s political situation deteriorated, with most travellers opting to reach the Falls through Zambia, but amid relative stability in recent years the number of tourists has started to pick up again.Development on both the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides has not been without its problems in the past, and in 2007 plans to build 500 chalets in a national park on the Zambian side, and the collapse of infrastructure in Zimbabwe, prompted Unesco to warn that the area could lose its World Heritage status. That never happened, however, and the development of the cricket ground will utilise the latest ecologically-friendly features.Approximations of the total capacity of the ground range between 4,000 and 12,000 and no cost estimates have been made available so far, but architects are said to be drawing up plans for a clubhouse. Once completed, it will be accessible by road, rail and air in Zimbabwe, while several airlines offer flights from Johannesburg, the journey taking under two hours.

Dilshan disapproves of century go-slow

Sri Lanka’s captain Tillakaratne Dilshan admitted he was ‘disappointed’ with how his team crossed the winning line at Lord’s

Sri Lanka’s captain Tillakaratne Dilshan admitted he was ‘disappointed’ with how his team crossed the winning line at Lord’s, as Angelo Mathews blocked out overs and declined singles to allow Dinesh Chandimal to reach his second one-day international hundred. However, he added, the value of that innings to a young batsman would bring huge benefits for the team.England’s captain Alastair Cook, on the other hand, was less fulsome in his praise of the slightly farcical scenes. At one point the 12th man tried to come on with a pair of gloves but was waved away by the umpire only for Mathews to signal he needed a new bat. Kevin Pietersen then became involved in an exchange of views – in what is becoming a slightly bad-tempered series for England – before the situation was ended two balls later when Chandimal swung Tim Bresnan for six over long-on to reach his hundred. As Chandimal celebrated, the England players stood stony-faced in their positions. “It was different, I’ve never seen that before,” Cook said. “They were perfectly entitled to do it if they want but it was a bit strange and the cricketing gods may look at that in a bit of disgust.”The instructions hadn’t come from the Sri Lanka dressing room and Dilshan could be seen becoming increasingly restless, especially when Mathews turned down a single with Chandimal almost sharing his crease at the striker’s end. “I was disappointed when Mathews didn’t take a single, but they haven’t played too much cricket,” he said.”I’m really happy he got a hundred. We are working as a team, it shows we are playing like a family and everyone saw we are a unit. Getting a hundred at Lord’s is special. Overall I’m really happy at the end result.”There was never any real danger of the result being impacted – even if Cook thought “it got a bit close” – and it was the venue that was the motivating factor behind Sri Lanka’s tactics. “I’m very happy because it’s an historical ground,” Chandimal said.Dilshan was able to appreciate the meaning of three-figures at Lord’s having made 193 during the Test match, but Chandimal won’t have his name up in the dressing room as the honours boards only cover Tests. “Any cricketer wants to have a hundred at Lord’s. I came here and did it in the Test match,” Dilshan said. “We still talk about the older Sri Lanka cricketers who got hundreds at Lord’s and we want to leave something for the youngsters who come in 10-15 years’ time.”While the finish was slightly messy and undignified, it shouldn’t disguise another impressive performance from Sri Lanka. That Chandimal, at 21 a player for the future, played such a key role only bodes well for the development of the team. He has spent a lot of time on the tour carrying drinks, and managed to run himself out at Headingley having replaced the retired Sanath Jayasuriya, so this innings showed resolve.”Chandimal played like an experienced guy and batted throughout the innings and he finished the game which is a good sign for Sri Lanka cricket,” Dilshan said. “With guys like myself, Mahela and Sanga we have a good unit and we have played well in the last two matches.”

O próximo compromisso do Carvoeiro é contra o Avaí.

Tim Bresnan kept in the frame for an England place in the first Test against India at Lord’s next week by grabbing four Worcestershire wickets on the first day of the County Championship match at Scarborough. In conditions which aided seam and swing, Yorkshire bowled out their fellow Division One strugglers for 168 on a green-tinged pitch after sending them in to bat, Ryan Sidebottom also showing good form to pick up three wickets. It was not entirely plain sailing for the Yorkshire batsmen either, but skipper Andrew Gale hit a robust unbeaten 68 for his side to close on 135 for 5, still trailing by 33.Before the match started, wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow, son of former Yorkshire captain David, received his county cap from skipper Gale and it was not long before he was celebrating with a catch behind the stumps.By then, however, Worcestershire had lost both their openers in the first six overs, Matt Pardoe falling lbw to Sidebottom and Daryl Mitchell edging Bresnan to Adam Lyth at first slip.Batsmen were finding survival difficult with the ball moving about appreciably and Vikram Solanki was dropped at second slip by Gary Ballance, but the miss was not expensive because in the same over he edged Richard Pyrah to provide Bairstow with his catch.Pyrah and Ajmal Shahzad were proving just as formidable as the opening bowlers and after Moeen Ali had edged Shahzad into the slips, Worcestershire slipped to 41 for 5 when Alexei Kervezee was lbw to a dipping yorker from Pyrah. There would have been a third wicket for Pyrah if Ballance had not dropped Gareth Andrew, who offered a chest-high chance to second slip and this miss was to prove costly because the left-hander went on to top score with 40.The morning slump continued, however, as Ballance jubilantly held James Cameron off Sidebottom and Worcestershire went to lunch on 61 for 6 . But Andrew and Ben Scott boosted the total straight after the interval as Bresnan and Sidebottom suddenly leaked runs with 43 coming off three overs. The chief culprit was Bresnan who went for 37 in four overs. The third ball of Shahzad’s return saw Andrew given another chance, Adil Rashid failing to hold on at third slip. This time Andrew did not cash in because in the next over from Sidebottom he drove low to Anthony McGrath at mid-off and Scott departed for a brave 26 when he tried to lift Bresnan over the arc and was held high at third slip by Rashid.Light rain brought forward the tea interval and on the resumption Bresnan polished off the innings by getting rid of Jack Shantry and Alan Richardson with consecutive balls to leave Saeed Ajmal unbeaten on 27.Yorkshire’s reply got off to a bad start, Joe Root being run out without facing a ball when Richardson deflected Lyth’s drive into the stumps and it became 15 for 2 with Lyth’s edge at Shantry going into Scott’s gloves. But Anthony McGrath, desperate for runs, and Gale, put Yorkshire in command again with a productive third-wicket stand of 92 in 19 overs.Gale took three boundaries and McGrath one in an over from Andrew which cost 19 and then Gale racked up five consecutive boundaries at the expense of off-spinner Ajmal, the fourth one rushing him to his half-century off 51 balls with 10 fours.Yorkshire slid late in the day as McGrath was lbw to Richardson for 32, Bairstow was pinned lbw by Ajmal and Pyrah was run out without scoring, but Gale remained unbeaten at the close.

Shaun Tait, the Australia fast bowler, is set to add to his tally of Twenty20 teams after agreeing terms with Zimbabwean domestic franchise Mid West Rhinos. Tait will play for Rhinos during Zimbabwe’s domestic Twenty20 competition in late November this year.Tait, who signed up to play for the Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s Big Bash League six weeks ago and will also represent Dolphins, the Durban-based South African franchise, for the Pro20 competition early next year, said he hoped his Zimbabwe stint would help boost his match fitness ahead of his Big Bash outing.”That’s the thing with Twenty20 tournaments, you’ve got to pick which ones are at the right time to keep your match fitness up, and rest in between,” he said. ”It’s just [before] the Big Bash, so it’s perfect timing.”The dates for Zimbabwe’s fortnight-long Twenty20 tournament have not been finalised but it is expected that the competition will be completed by December 3, which will allow Tait to travel back to Melbourne well in time to prepare for the Big Bash.Tait retired from Tests in 2008 and quit ODIs too following Australia’s exit in the quarter-final stage of the 2011 World Cup. He then represented Rajasthan Royals in the IPL this year, grabbing six wickets in four games. He was forced to turn down a deal with Surrey earlier this year due to an elbow injury sustained during the IPL. His Zimbabwe deal was set up by his former teammate Jason Gillespie, who has also re-signed as coach of Rhinos.”The way it’s going I’m just going to play [Twenty20] tournaments,” Tait, who is still available to play Twenty20 cricket for Australia, said. “If clubs are keen to sign me, that’s great. I’ve become sort of a freelance Twenty20 player.”
