Gerald Majola, chief executive of Cricket South Africa (CSA), has been cleared of all charges of financial impropriety relating to bonus payments from the 2009 Indian Premier League and travel expenses for him and his wife. However, he has been formally cautioned that all future payments received by him from outside CSA must be reported to the body’s remunerations committee (REMCO) and he will have to pay back the travel costs of his children.Majola and 39 other staff members’ bonuses, that were paid out after the successful second season of the IPL, were being investigated by a CSA internal commission of inquiry because they did not go through REMCO. Instead, the amounts were picked up by the board’s auditors Deloitte who reported irregularities in the body’s financial statements in August. After initially announcing that the payments would be probed externally, CSA decided to move the commission in-house and vice president AK Khan chaired proceedings.CSA was criticised for a lack transparency after moving the investigation in-house but they attempted to ensure independence by including two external members as part of their review committee. Attorney Yusuf Dockrat and Advocate N Cassim assisted Khan, John Bester (Chairperson of CSA’s Finance Committee) and John Blair (Chairperson of CSA’s Audit Committee). The committee made their findings pubic at a press conference on Friday in Johannesburg. The committee found that Majola had received bonuses from the IPL and ICC Champions Trophy of R1 775 143 (US $253 591), equivalent to eight times his annual salary for the 2009 and 2010 financial year. The amount were processed through CSAs payroll and taxed but not through REMCO, as a result of precedents set in previous non-CSA events, particularly the 2007 World Twenty20.”The treatment of the fund as separate from CSA… is not ideal. It undermines the purpose of good governance and provides fertile ground for accusations of impropriety,” said the report. However it found that REMCO should have been aware of the bonuses because they were recorded in CSA’s books. Khan said: “Nothing before us suggests that there was deliberate concealment of the event bonuses.”The committee noted that Majola was “naïve in matters of this nature” and in future he will have to ensure that any event bonuses are also signed off by a member of REMCO. “Majola made an error of judgement,” Khan said. “He will be taken through processes to make sure this does not happen again.”Also under the spotlight was more than half a million rand (US$71,428) in travel costs incurred by Majola and his family. The investigations found that Majola was well under the board’s budget for his travel of R1.4 million (approx US$200,000) with the cost for him and his wife coming to R629000 (US$89,857) although Majola will have to pay back R28,169 (US$4,024 which was paid for his children.Bester said that Majola wife’s travel costs, which came under scrutiny after a leaked report to the Times newspaper allegedly authored by CSA president Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka mentioned them, can be covered by CSA. “As CEO you have the special privilege of your spouse accompanying you. He acted within the constraints of his contract and did not abuse the system.”The leaked report also brought to the fore what insiders claim are a “very strained relationship” between Majola and Nyoka. An unhappy looking Nyoka was present at Friday’s press conference and would not be drawn on whether he was satisfied with the committee’s work. “The commission has had the opportunity to listen to submissions from various parties and they have come to a decision,” he said. “We must respect that.”Majola and Nyoka have appeared to be at loggerheads since Nyoka was chairman of the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) at the turn of the millennium. In 2002, Nyoka resigned from his post at the GCB after unsuccessfully challenging then United Cricket Board (UCB) president Percy Sonn for his position.Nyoka returned to cricket in 2005, as chair of a 22-man steering committee that was set up to run the GCB. His role to assist in mediating between warring clubs who were up in arms over the lack of transformation in the province. He was elected President of CSA in October 2008 and Khan rejected rumours of a vote of no confidence in Nyoka. “Doctor Nyoka is our president and he was elected to occupy that post for the next two years.”

West Ham: Journalist backs Watkins move

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has suggested that West Ham United should make a move for Ollie Watkins, amid recent reports linking the Aston Villa striker to the club.

What’s the word?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke insisted that the England international could be the answer to the Hammers’ centre-forward problem, having failed to secure an adequate understudy or upgrade to current leading man, Michail Antonio.

The respected journalist said of a move for the 26-year-old that: “We all know that West Ham need a striker, they’ve needed one for the last three of four transfer windows and have not brought one in, so landing someone like Ollie Watkins would be a great signing for them.”

Reports last month suggested that the former Brentford man had emerged as David Moyes’ top striking target ahead of this summer, having previously failed to bring in a new addition in January.

Moyes will love him

Amid all the fanfare surrounding the club’s continued rise – both domestically and in Europe – there is still a nagging feeling that the London Stadium outfit have left themselves short in attack, with the over-reliance on the aforementioned Antonio potentially set to come back to bite them.

The versatile speedster has continued to impress in a loan striking berth – and is the club’s top scorer in the Premier League era – although the goals have dried up after an initial flurry at the start of the campaign, with his last top-flight strike having come back on New Year’s Day against Crystal Palace.

Watkins himself may not be a prolific presence either, with just nine league goals so far this season, although he would offer some much-needed competition in the forward ranks, as well as similar attributes to Moyes’ current option.

The Villa man – who has been dubbed “unbelievable” by pundit Dan Bardell – is a constant pest for opposition defenders, ranking in the top 23% for pressures made among those in his position across Europe’s top five leagues, as well as ranking in the top 9% for successful blocks.

The Torquay-born ace is often seen charging full pelt at both defenders and goalkeepers alike, with his relentless work ethic and willingness to get in behind having been evident as he got himself on the scoresheet against Norwich City at the weekend, latching onto a lofted pass over the top and dispatching a fierce effort past Tim Krul.

With Moyes’ men often so lethal on the break, having that willing runner in attack could prove vital, while his signing may not have to break the bank either, with Transfermarkt currently valuing him at just £31.5m.

There’s no suggestion that the club has to cast off Antonio just yet, but Moyes and GSB can secure a perfect competitor should he opt to swoop for Watkins in the upcoming window.

Liverpool eye up new deal for Joe Gomez

Liverpool want to offer out-of-favour centre-back Joe Gomez a new deal at the end of the season, according to a key update on Saturday morning.

The Lowdown: Gomez struggling for minutes

The 24-year-old has found himself down the pecking order for much of this season, struggling to oust the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate.

In fact, Gomez has been limited to just three starts in the Premier League and it has led to speculation over his future, with Aston Villa linked with a summer move.

The defender’s current Liverpool deal expires in 2024 but a big update is now doing the rounds with regards to his Reds future.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-31/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Contract claim emerges

According to The Liverpool Echo, sharing news in the early hours before Saturday’s clash with Spurs, the Reds will offer Gomez a new contract this summer.

It is stated that the club have ‘tasked Julian Ward with looking to tie down the defender’, with Jurgen Klopp still seeing him as an important part of his plans.

The boss has described Gomez as a ‘sensational’ footballer in the past.

The Verdict: Big decision for defender

This is great news from a Liverpool perspective, although Gomez will need to decide whether or not to extend his stay, having become a squad player these days.

With the World Cup approaching, he may feel he needs regular minutes in order to make England’s squad, and he could also want to be a key starter somewhere well beyond this winter’s competition.

If Gomez is content with his current role, however, slotting in at both centre-back and right-back from time to time, it is a no-brainer to keep hold of him and it would be a huge positive seeing him stay.

Hashim Amla not distracted by mini-milestone

With only 14 South Africans have more caps than him, Hashim Amla – who will play his 50th Test in Durban – is focused on the next game, albeit for different reasons

Sidharth Monga in Durban24-Dec-2010

Hashim Amla: “My record hasn’t been fantastic here in Test matches, but as I said I have always enjoyed playing at the Kingsmead”•Getty Images

When he made his debut at Eden Gardens six years ago, scoring just 62 runs in his first six Test innings, Hashim Amla couldn’t think beyond the next game. Now that only 14 South Africans have more caps than him, Amla is just as focused on the next game, albeit for different reasons. As is typical of the man, Amla is not letting the mini-milestone of 50 Tests, which will be brought up at his home ground in Dubran, distract him. “Playing any Test at my home ground is a special occasion,” Amla said two days before the game. “Playing the 50th Test really doesn’t put any more importance, to be honest with you. The team always comes first, and the fact that we are 1-0 up going into a big Test, if we can close the series, it takes precedence over any kind of distraction like a 50th Test.”I think in the greater scheme of things, it is nothing compared to some of the other guys who have been really successful. I am really grateful.”More important, perhaps, would be to set the record straight at the Kingsmead, where he grew up playing, keeping attacks in the field for days. In five Tests here, Amla has reached 50 only once, and has an aggregate of 122 runs at an average of 13.55. “It’d be lovely if I can [score a century here],” he said. “My record hasn’t been fantastic here in Test matches, but as I said I have always enjoyed playing at the Kingsmead. It would be lovely to make a contribution to the team cause here. It’s a home ground so it would be a lovely feeling. I have been brought up on these wickets, paying for the Dolphins. I have got runs here. It will be nice to kind of chip in for the national team.”The surface here, he said, suits his game, and there is no such reason why he shouldn’t play well here. “I’ve been very fortunate growing up on this wicket, with the bounce and the pace,” Amla said. “I’m not sure how the Test wicket is going to play, but on a good day, when the wicket’s flat, it’s a fantastic place to play. The outfield’s small and the boundaries are short and you get fantastic value for shots.”Amla said this is a great chance for South Africa to seal the series, and that’s what they are focussing on. “A lot has been said about the wicket but at the end of the day, as a team, we try and keep things simple,” he said. “Our bowlers and batsmen have been in good nick and hopefully we can continue in that vein. It’s a big chance to seal the series, but as you can see it’s hot and humid so it’s going to be hard work.”Another reason why Amla would back himself to do well is the opposition. Against India, the native country of his grandfather, Amla has scored four centuries in the last three Tests, having been dismissed only twice. “It’s quite funny actually,” he said. “I really don’t know what to say. I’m just grateful that I’ve had a good year so far, and the year is not over yet. At the end of the day it’s the players who can perform consistently that stand out.”The pitch might be full of grass with two days to go, but India are likely to get good crowd support here. Amla said that is not going to be a big factor. “Whenever the Indians have played here they’ve had good support,” he said. “But you know that in the middle it’s a different ball game. They may have a bit more support here than in other places, but the game is played on the wicket and that’s where you’re going to need it.”
