Glamorgan fight to even-up contest

Bad light and rain meant just 45 overs were bowled on day two of the County Championship Division Two clash between Surrey and Glamorgan at The Oval, which ended with the visitors on 72 for 2

08-Sep-2010
ScorecardBad light and rain meant just 45 overs were bowled on day two of the County Championship Division Two clash between Surrey and Glamorgan at The Oval, which ended with the visitors on 72 for 2. Surrey had earlier been bowled out for 380, but their hopes of making significant inroads on the visitors batting line-up was frustrated by the weather.Nine overs were possible before lunch, during which time Surrey added 19 runs for the loss of Gareth Batty, who was bowled playing across the line to Jim Allenby. Chris Schofield’s first Championship half-century of the season, which came off 107 balls, arrived shortly after lunch. At the other end, Chris Tremlett gave a hint that the home side were on course for all five batting points when he reeled off two successive straight driven fours off Huw Waters. But with the seamers gaining assistance from the cloud cover as well as the second new ball, James Harris and Allenby polished off the last three Surrey wickets in the space of 32 deliveries. Tremlett was brilliantly caught in front of first slip by Mark Wallace.Having just driven Harris to the point boundary to move to 63, Schofield then lost his off stump trying to work the 20-year-old seamer through wide mid-on. Three overs later, Stuart Meaker was the last Surrey man to go, caught behind off Allenby.Facing a follow-on target of 231, the Glamorgan lost Gareth Rees in the seventh over of their reply when he was trapped on the crease by Tremlett, though not before he had worked the former England and Hampshire fast bowler down to the rope at deep-backward square-leg for four.Tremlett, who looked back to his best, and Jade Dernbach gave Mark Cosgrove ample opportunity have a nibble down the leg-side, but the 26-year-old Australian refused to take the bait. Instead, Cosgrove opted to violently despatch anything wide of his off stump to the cover boundary until, in the 12th over, a moment of indecision resulted in him being bowled by Meaker. At tea, the visitors were 55 for 2, but only further 19 balls were possible before the heavens opened, putting paid to any more action. In that time, however, Jamie Dalrymple and Ben Wright gave Glamorgan hope of getting back into the match with an unbeaten stand of 34.

Ele falou: ‘fui eu’, porque a perna do jogador do Corinthians estava machucada.

Massive achievement for Warriors – Jacobs

Despite the disappointment of losing in the Champions League final, Warriors captain Davy Jacobs was proud of his side’s achievement

Firdose Moonda in Johannesburg26-Sep-2010On the 16th of December 1838, almost 15,000 Zulu warriors set off to battle against less than 500 Voortrekkers. A few hours later, three thousand Zulu were killed, mowed down by a barrage of bullets. Three Voortrekkers were wounded by the blade of a spear. Such was the mismatch of the Battle of Blood River, where the warriors’ weapons were never going to be any match for the force of a gun. So too was the mismatch of the Champions League Twenty20 final, where the Warriors simply didn’t have enough ammunition to overcome the Chennai Super Kings. The Eastern Cape franchise must have undergone an overnight transformation. The eleven brave soldiers who handed South Australian Redbacks their first defeat of the tournament on Saturday had been replaced by eleven drowning sailors who stood no chance against a navy that was intent on claiming spoils. Davy Jacobs, captain of the Warriors, offered no excuses, accepting that his men had met their match. “We have to give credit where it’s due, it’s not just that we screwed up,” he said. The Warriors’ challenge ended almost as quickly as their namesakes’ did over 170 years ago. When R Ashwin trapped Jacobs lbw in the sixth over, the victory calls for Chennai may as well have started sounding. After Jacobs’ dismissal, the Warriors hit just six boundaries. The men from the Eastern Cape couldn’t get together in any discipline after that. “Their two spinners really tied us down. Ashwin is a quality bowler and Murali is world class,” Jacobs said.It sounded very much like Jacobs knew the match was over then. He admitted that the batsmen didn’t know how to approach their task with the Chennai spinners in operation. “We didn’t really have a strategy to attack them and when we lost one or two wickets, we tried to get some momentum and take them on, but it wasn’t our night,” he said.Jacobs didn’t have to be asked if he thought 128 was enough, it was obvious that he knew it wasn’t. He may not have thrown in the towel there, saying that no team can ever “run away” with a final, but he did change his bowling strategy. Oddly, Jacobs tossed the ball to Makhaya Ntini to open the bowling and not to his regular go-to man, Rusty Theron. “We thought we’d give him a go since he was playing against his IPL team,” Jacobs explained with a shrug, and then a hint of a smile. That he managed a fraction of a toothy grin at all was unexpected, because Jacobs had taken the loss hard. “We are very disappointed. If someone had told us before that we would lose in the final, we would have taken it, but once we got here we wanted to win,” he said. Jacobs is fiercely ambitious and has spoken freely about his team’s desire to be crowned the best in the world. He quickly realises that they may have just stepped on the path to that. “We wanted to leave a legacy and I think we have started that,” he said.Jacobs didn’t labour the point, he isn’t one for drawn out conversations or overly laudatory speak. He recognised the achievement of the franchise, particularly in the light of the massive prize money they will earn. “This is a massive achievement for the Eastern Cape. The last 18 months have been unbeliev…., unbeliev…,” he stopped, giggled off his inability to pronounce the word and said it in Afrikaans instead, Then he looked around the room. “I don’t even know what the question was,” he said. No one else knew either. What they did know was this down-to-earth, frank player is surely destined for bigger things. “I’ve received a couple of calls from India with a few offers,” he tailed off. Perhaps the IPL is beckoning for Jacobs. It could do with some of his wholesomeness. Even more so, with some of his selflessness. “I would have given up all of my runs for a win tonight,” he said. Anyone who saw the look in his eyes when he said that would have known that this warrior will come back, making sure his men are armed with machine guns next time.

Aston Villa: Mings’ position in jeopardy

Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings is ‘at risk’ of losing his place in the team, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

Mings, a Villa mainstay, has started 29 of their 31 Premier League matches so far this season, with only injury or suspension keeping him out of the line-up.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-developments/” title=”Aston Villa latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Villa paid just over £20million to sign him from Bournemouth in the summer of 2019, and he signed a contract extension in September 2020. His £80,000-per-week deal runs until the end of the 2023/24 season.

Mings has faced criticism in recent times, with journalist Zach Lowy insisting in February that he was ‘far too error-prone to be a starter, let alone captain’ and urging Villa ‘to move on from him and upgrade with a new CB this summer’.

Steven Gerrard has said he will pick his ‘long-term’ skipper in the summer and admitted that he could recruit someone from elsewhere to don the armband.

The latest

Jones, speaking to GMS, says Gerrard will be considering Mings’ ‘position in the side’ in light of a succession of errors in recent seasons.

He explained:

“I think his position in the side has to be at risk at this stage,” he said. “He has also made quite a few errors over the past couple of years.”

The verdict

Since Villa were promoted to the Premier League, Mings has made five errors directly leading to an opposition shot and four leading to a goal and given away two penalty kicks (via SofaScore).

And those figures don’t account for more subjective errors.

It seems that Gerrard is determined to strengthen at the heart of his defence, with Football Insider claiming he plans to approach his old club Liverpool over a deal for Joe Gomez.

Gomez, valued at £19.8million by Transfermarkt, is described as his no. 1 target.

His public comments about the captaincy might have been a veiled challenge to Mings, who could be fighting for his spot in these final weeks of the campaign. If he can respond, then perhaps it will be enough to avoid the axe.

In other news, Villa could make this move after Sean Dyche’s sacking.

BCCI and Modi asked to reach compromise

The Supreme Court of India has asked the BCCI and Lalit Modi to reach a compromise over the impasse regarding the composition of the disciplinary committee

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2010India’s Supreme Court has asked the BCCI and Lalit Modi to reach a compromise over the composition of the disciplinary committee investigating charges levied against the former IPL chairman. In a surprising turn of events, which was sparked by a plea from Modi’s lawyer, the court said it would resume hearing the case if the parties could reach no agreement by October 27.The court also offered two suggestions for the compromise: to increase the size of the existing committee or have its three members stay away from the league’s governing council, which is authorised to look into the disciplinary committee’s report on Modi. The disciplinary committee currently comprises IPL chairman Chirayu Amin, BCCI vice-president Arun Jaitley and Jyotiraditya Scindia, the president of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association.”I am hoping good sense will prevail on the BCCI and they will accept this suggestion,” Modi’s lawyer, Mehmood Abdi, told CNN-IBN.Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, however said the board had neither been asked nor ordered to reach any settlement in the matter within a deadline. He said, “At about 10.30 in the morning Mr Ram Jethmalani (Modi’s lawyer) stood up and asked to use his ‘good offices’ to settle the issue.” The BCCI’s lawyers, Manohar said, responded by saying they had no such instructions on this. The court then asked Jethmalani to use those good offices and come to an agreement by October 27. Asked whether the BCCI would enter into a discussion with Jethmalani, Manohar said, “We are always ready to listen to anyone.”Modi had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking the removal of Amin and Jaitley from the disciplinary committee. Modi’s plea for the recusal of these two members, on grounds of bias against him, had been rejected by the Bombay high court in September. The BCCI’s lawyer CA Sundaram told the court that it was not feasible to reconstitute the committee. “It is not possible,” he said. “The inquiry is at an advanced stage. Many witnesses from abroad have already been examined.”The BCCI had suspended Modi immediately following the conclusion of IPL 3 in April and charged him with financial irregularities relating to the bidding process for IPL franchises, the mid-over ad sales and the sale of theatrical rights. He was also charged with colluding to set up a rebel league in England. Modi has denied all the charges and repeatedly accused BCCI president Shashank Manohar and the president-elect N Srinivasan of harbouring personal grudges against him.

Leon King: Rangers’ new Richard Gough?

Rangers find themselves with an excellent group of academy players coming through the ranks at Ibrox at the minute, with Alex Lowry and Charlie McCann really showing their promise.

One of the most talked-about youth prospects is centre-back Leon King, who at just 18 years old, has featured on the Premiership sides bench a few times already this season and could be ready for a step-up next season.

King signed a new long-term deal in January which will take him up to May 2024, with Ross Wilson explaining that he was “delighted” the young defender will continue his journey at Rangers.

The move to offer him a new deal was a smart one, as his performances in the B team haven’t gone unnoticed, he was linked with a move to both Manchester United and Newcastle United before pledging his future to the Gers.

Steven Gerrard was the first to offer hints that King could be a key part of the Ibrox side’s future when the then 16-year-old was included in the first-team squad for their trip to Belgium to face Standard Liege in the Europa League in October 2020.

Since then, he went on to make his official debut against Falkirk in a League Cup tie before featuring for the Gers in league duty against Livingston in May 2021, long after the side had won the Premiership title.

This led Giovanni van Bronckhorst to promote him to the first-team squad in January and this experience will surely stand him in good stead.

The player has all the attributes to become the side’s next Richard Gough, a stalwart at the heart of defence who eventually went on to make over 300 appearances in Rangers blue. With former coach Gerrard labelling him as “superb” then the sky really is the limit for the talented defender.

Van Bronckhorst could save millions by utilising him in the next few seasons in what is an exciting time for the youngster.
