The Big PictureThis series was supposed to be an opportunity to showcase Zimbabwe cricket to the world. Is it in good health? Is the talent there? Is the desire there? The Twenty20 World Cup provided a few answers. Even though they didn’t win a game in the tourney, they sparkled in the warm-ups by defeating Australia and Pakistan. This tri-series has hinted at more progress. They produced a clinical win against India in the first ODI in Bulawayo. They have to now to show they can sustain their recent performances. The game against Sri Lanka provides another opportunity.Sri Lanka chose to rest some players and test a few others in this competition. In their first ODI, they might have fallen well short of setting an ideal target but considering the conditions they batted in – the track was two-paced and there was help for spin and seam in the first half due to overnight rains- it wasn’t a poor effort. The ease with which India chased it down was slightly surprising, though. The pitch had certainly eased up but the bowling lacked bite. “To defend a score of 240-odd we had to bowl in the right areas and take half-chances,” Dilshan said later. Neither happened. They would try to get their batting and bowling right against Zimbabwe. That Zimbabwe rely on their four-prong spin attack is no secret. It’s as if they are saying: ‘We have four spinners who like strangling the batsmen and two of them – Ray Price and Prosper Utseya – have no problem in operating within Powerplays. We will try to get you with spin, tackle it if you can.’ It’s going to be interesting to see how Sri Lanka tackle that threat.Form guide (most recent first)ZimbabweWLLLL

Watch out for…You’ve got to love Ray Price. He doesn’t even bother to hide that almost maniacal hatred of the batsmen. Watch out for his angry stares, his long follow-through that ends up at the nose of the batsmen, his screeching appeals, and most importantly for his strangling spin bowling, without which all the rest of his mannerisms would have ended up irritating you.Tharanga is an unlikely candidate to replace the more popular and the more attacking Sanath Jayasuriya but his job has been made relatively easier by Jayasuriya’s recent failures. Tharanga, though, has to score consistently to make that spot his own.Team newsZimbabwe (possible) 1 Hamilton Masakadza, 2 Brendan Taylor(wk) 3 Charles Coventry, 4 Greg Lamb, 5 Craig Ervine, 6 Elton Chigumbura (capt.), 7 Andy Blignaut, 8 Graeme Cremer, 9 Prosper Utseya, 10 Chris Mpofu, 11 Ray Price.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt.), 3 Thilan Samaraweera, 4 Angelo Mathews/Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Chamara Silva, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Thissara Perera, 8 Suraj Randiv, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Dilhara Fernando, 11 Ajantha Mendis.Stats and trivia Ray Price has an economy rate of 3.88 from 75 ODIs. Against Sri Lanka his economy rate gets even better: just 3.36 from seven games Upul Tharanga averages 32.40 from 93 ODIs and has collected 231 runs at 38.50 from seven games against Zimbabwe. He hit a hundred in his first ODI against Zimbabwe but he has also two ducks against them.Quotes”Our players have played more games now than some of the cricketers we come up against and we cannot go on blaming inexperience any more … I am hoping to make a difference with my captaincy. We are capable of winning games and we have done it in the past. “

Aston Villa still eyeing Bissouma

Aston Villa could still make a final approach to sign Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma this month with the transfer window set to close on Monday.

What’s the story?

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, Villa know what it would take to sign the midfielder and could return with one final bid.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones said: “It didn’t really advance as far as they were hoping it would with Bissouma.

“But, at least at this stage, they already know all the terms that are needed to fall into place.

“So whereas other teams, when they start scrambling around for a signing, have to start from square one and get their initial details in place, they’re quite advanced in that already in terms of knowing what they’ve got to do.

“It wouldn’t shock me if suddenly they did at least ask the question of Bissouma one more time.”

It was reported early in the window by Sky Sports that the West Midlands club were interested in the 25-year-old whilst The Athletic claimed that it would take a fee of around £50m for the Seagulls to part ways with the Malian.

Gerrard will be elated

Aston Villa could certainly do with reinforcements in midfield with Marvelous Nakamba out until April with a knee injury and Douglas Luiz subject to a potential bid from Tottenham as well as only having 18 months left on his contract with the Villans.

Steven Gerrard has already made two statement signings this window with the captures of Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona and Lucas Digne from Everton as well as adding defender Calum Chambers from Arsenal to his squad.

Bissouma has enjoyed an impressive campaign thus far for the south-coast outfit, averaging an 89% passing accuracy as well as a whopping 3.9 tackles per game whilst also taking 66.6 touches.

As a result, signing the Malian would add significant bite to the Villa midfield with Gerrard keen to play with a 4-3-3 formation and could make the West Midlands outfit a serious force to be reckoned with.

After all, no player in his current squad has made anywhere close to the same number of successful challenges per game with John McGinn top-ranked on 2.9.

It’s clear, therefore, why he’d be such an exciting signing and one that leaves Gerrard delighted; he is perfect for his sytem.

Everton: Toffees could sign Sergio Gomez

Everton are in the frame to sign left-back Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht this summer, according to Belgian outlet Voetbal Niewus (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

21-year-old Gomez, who came through the famous youth ranks at FC Barcelona, only joined Anderlecht from Borussia Dortmund last summer in a £2million deal.

The Spaniard has quickly established himself as a key player for the Pro League outfit though, starting all of their top-flight matches to date.

Across his 34 appearances in all competitions, he’s contributed an impressive six goals and 13 assists, scarcely believable numbers for a full-back.

The latest

The report (via Sport Witness) states that, should Gomez leave this summer, ‘it seems unlikely’ that he’ll join one of the top clubs in Europe.

Instead, Everton, and Premier League rivals Southampton, are ‘more realistic’ options.

Anderlecht value Gomez at around €9million, which equates to around £7.5million.

The verdict

Would this be a smart signing for Everton? Gomez certainly looks like a gem, and £7.5million actually falls below Transfermarkt’s £8.1million valuation.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has dubbed the Spain Under-21 international ‘superb’ and even anointed him the ‘king of assists’ earlier this month, so perhaps the Blues can have their own rival to Liverpool’s playmakers on the flanks across Stanley Park.

It’s worth noting that Everton signed a young left-back last month in the form of Vitalii Mykolenko, but Gomez has also operated in more advanced roles on the flanks and in central midfield, so could both players feature in Frank Lampard’s long-term plans?

We believe this could be one worth pursuing for Steve Hitchen, who’s been offered the director of football role at Goodison Park.

In other news, there’s been yet another injury blow for Everton.

Need consistency in team selection – Shakib

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has called for consistency in team selection to bring stability to the side and allow the players to develop

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has called for consistency in team selection to bring stability to the side and allow the players to develop. He drew comparisons with Zimbabwe, who have stuck with the same group of players over the last few years and recently notched up wins over India and Sri Lanka in the ODI tri-series at home.”We have been a young side for the last ten years,” Shakib told reporters in Dhaka following his team’s return from the tour of England. “The players have not been given a chance to settle down. You should take a look at Zimbabwe, how they are getting results having persisted with one set of players for the past 4-5 years.”Bangladesh were beaten 2-0 in the Test series against England, with the low point being the batting debacle in Manchester where they were bowled out in a single session to lose the second Test by an innings. While acknowledging the team’s fragility in batting, Shakib referred to problems with the bowling as well.”Everyone knows that we did well in the first Test but not the second game,” he said. “Not just avoid the follow-on, we were in a position to score big in the first innings but we failed. The bowling wasn’t too good in the series either,” he said. The team’s lone success in the series was Tamim Iqbal, who scored two stunning centuries. He, too, was critical of the rest of the team’s performance. “From my point of view it was a good series. Two centuries and a half-century in English conditions is not a simple task but as far as the team is concerned, it wasn’t such a good series.”It is quite sad that the middle and lower order didn’t perform and this became our problem (in England), making our performance in the two Tests inconsistent.”As for his animated celebrations after scoring a century at Lord’s, Tamim confirmed he was signalling Pete, the dressing-room attendant, to put his name up on the honour’s board. “Ever since bhaiya (Nafees Iqbal) told me that there is an honour’s board in Lord’s where the centurion’s name is etched forever, I wanted to score there.”

Ele fica!

Wolves: Willy Boly still ‘not quite the same player’

MailSport journalist Tom Collomosse has issued a worrying verdict on Willy Boly’s situation at Wolves, saying the player has never really returned to full form since his health issues last year.

The Lowdown: Boly profiled

Boly appeared to be an absolute superstar when he arrived at Molineux, starting 36 games in both their promotion campaign and first season back in the Premier League.

Indeed, he recorded an incredible eight Man of the Match awards in his first year in the Black Country, and even bagged four goals in that return year to the top flight.

His influence waned after that though, starting only 43 top flight matches combined across 2019/20 and 2020/21. This season, the 6 foot 5 colossus has not played a single league match, missing the last nine games with a leg injury.

The Latest: Never truly recovered

Collomosse, speaking to Give Me Sport, has offered a rather worrying update, claiming the Ivory Coast international has never been the same player since recovering from a battle with Covid-19 in April 2021.

“I think the problem you have is he has had injuries. Last year, he had Covid and struggled after he came back from it,” he told GMS.

“I remember Nuno saying in a press conference that he’d had an elevated heart rate at one point. I’m sure he’s absolutely medically clear at the moment, but he’s not quite been the same player, I wouldn’t say, since about halfway through last season.”

The Verdict: Devastating

It is gutting to hear of Boly’s struggles – this is a player who was in the Championship Team of the Year in his debut campaign, and one who Joleon Lescott called ‘outstanding’ for his combination of physical prowess and agility.

Bruno Lage has had to stick with pretty much the same back three week in week out as a result, and while Conor Coady, Romain Saiss and Max Kilman have served the boss well, he will need more depth if they have a European competition to worry about next season.

Boly’s contract expires in the summer of 2023, meaning the club will likely need to decide this summer if he is fit enough to have a future with Wolves or if he should be moved on before he enters his last 12 months.

What a shame it would be if never gets another chance at Molineux.

O candidato vem trabalhando nesse argumento desde a semana passada.
