Leeds: Harrison’s woes continue vs Spurs

Leeds United’s woes continued as the Yorkshire giants were defeated by Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

Marcelo Bielsa and his side were already sat just one place above the relegation zone, just two points adrift, but they were unrewarded in a game that they actually looked quite promising in.

The Argentine was without several key stars, with Raphinha (illness) and Rodrigo (injury) surprise absentees, on top of leading talisman Patrick Bamford and vice-captain Luke Ayling.

Spurs failed to even register a shot on target in the first half as the Whites went into the break one goal to the good after Dan James met Jack Harrison’s low-driven cross.

However, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and then Sergio Reguilon found the net for the home side to seal the come-from-behind victory.

Leeds had more possession and more attempts at goal than Spurs, yet a vast majority of these came from outside the area and it’s yet another cause for concern for Bielsa as his side looked hopeless in the final third.

His two wingers may have combined for their only goal – their 12th in as many games, to be precise – but neither pulled up any trees besides that one moment.

Particularly with Harrison as he looked rather lightweight on the left. He lost possession more times (24) than any other visiting player, meaning he handed possession back to Spurs once every 2.75 minutes across the whole game.

Furthermore, he failed with his six other crosses, managing an accuracy rate of just 14% and similarly, a passing accuracy of 78% was the second-worst of any outfield starter, as per SofaScore.

The former Man City graduate also appeared to be weak in his battles, winning just 27% of his 15 battles, which suggests that, more often than not, he struggled up against Emerson Royal and the home back-three.

On social media, it was 59th-minute substitute Junior Firpo that received plenty of flak from supporters, but given he was thrown on in difficult circumstances and was tasked with defensive duties, rather than forward ones, he cannot garner much of the blame.

Yes, Harrison got the assist for their opener but aside from that, he struggled to combat the Lilywhites’ physical threat and he was rather wasteful too.

The £60k-per-week dynamo could’ve made an even bigger impact had he replicated his actions in the 44th minute with more consistency throughout the game and as such, he will have disappointed Bielsa to not have delivered more.

The Positive Effects of Watching Sports Like Football

Playing almost any sport in general can and does have several positive impacts on our body, mind, and social skills. However, can the same be said about people who watch sports? With football being the most popular and the most watched sport globally, several studies have been conducted to find out whether watching football has a positive impact on fans of the sport. As it turns out, there are indeed pros of even watching the game being played on TV or at the stadium.

Entertainment

It is common to undermine the importance of entertainment and relaxation until it’s too late and life begins to feel like a chore. Football is the most watched sport in the world because it is also the most entertaining sport to watch for billions of people across the planet. The satisfaction of watching your favourite team win after a tiring day at work is nothing short of stress relief. If you are into sports betting, then that’s another reason to watch more relevant matches, follow the players, and stay updated with team progress, changes, transfers, etc. for making accurate predictions.

Peace

The infamy surrounding some fanatic fan groups in football may not make you feel that football can bring about peace, which is understandable. However, football as a sport has managed to bring about peace on a much larger scale than a few ruffians occasionally acting unruly. Several parts within the United Kingdom itself have managed to keep their historic enmities limited to football derbies, whereas the past was much darker and violent.

On an even larger scale, wars have been temporarily halted because of football, or in one particular case, because of Pele. As one can imagine, if the powers that be did not watch football and love it as much as they did/do, it wouldn’t be possible. Also, if the people they preside over did not support the decision in favour of football, they would not be able to make such decisions either. It might get rough on and off the field sometimes, but in the end, football does help in keeping the peace.

Socialising

If you are a fan of club football, socialising will never be an issue for you. Not only can you talk and argue about football with even strangers, but you can also become part of a much bigger sports community. Local fan clubs are abundant, and socialising is a common aspect of such clubs. They hold exclusive events, fundraisers, etc. to encourage socialising among fans too. Going to a derby with a group to support your team at the stadium is always a grand experience for anyone who loves watching football and socialising at the same time.

Aside from that, staying updated with what is going on in the world of football can help you break the ice in awkward social situations. It can turn a dull party into something interesting, help you make a friend, and perhaps even land a date! Contrary to popular belief, there are a lot of female football fans these days than there was a decade ago.

Intelligence

Yes, it’s true that watching football can enhance our brain functions quite significantly. Unlikely as it may sound, neuroscientists at the University of Chicago published a report way back in 2012 that confirms the theory which originated in the 90s. The aforementioned study, as well as several others which point to finding similar results, defines the principle of increased brain function through watching sports like football as embodied cognition.

Apparently, when someone truly engages himself/herself in watching a match with full attention, their brains show activities which would normally be seen in someone who is actually playing the sport in question. It is a partial activation, as compared to someone who is physically playing football, but even watching the game with attention will boost your brain function and create brand new neural links. These new links are often found to be beneficial in terms of language comprehension, which is directly related to IQ points.

Not that sports fans need an excuse to watch football of course, but just in case you do, now you have several! From increased intelligence and socialisation, to stress busting relaxation, it seems as though football has more to offer than watching mindless entertainment.

Poupado, Bruno Silva é baixa no treino do Botafogo

Flintoff reaffirms England commitment

Andrew Flintoff has reiterated his belief that Twenty20 cricket will not impinge upon the primacy of Test cricket

Andrew Flintoff has reiterated his belief that Twenty20 cricket will not impinge upon the primacy of Test cricket, by pointing out that it was his matchwinning feats at the game’s highest level that have made him so attractive to the various clubs and franchises around the world that are now bidding for his services in the twilight years of his career. On a short stop-over in London to promote his new autobiography, Flintoff defended his decision to turn down an ECB incremental contract, and confirmed that, following talks with the ECB, his over-riding ambition is to continue to play for England for as long as his form and fitness permits.”Everything with them has been fine and above board,” said Flintoff of his dealings with the ECB. “They know where we’re at, and the reasons we’re doing what we’re doing. I’m available for every England game, except obviously Test matches, and for whatever they want me to do. Like every other player who plays for a county, you have to perform to get in the side.”My motives are true,” Flintoff added. “I want to play for England for a period of time, and I’d love to play more Test cricket but it’s a physical impossibility, so the next best thing for me is to play ODIs and Twenty20s. Playing for England is what I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid, and I feel lucky to do it. I don’t know how long left I’ve got to do it, so I want to play every possible game.”Despite his stated intentions, Flintoff’s priorities were called into question last week when his agent, Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler, said that a desire to go bungee-jumping had been a deciding factor in his decision to reject the ECB’s offer. But while Flintoff laughed off that particular notion, saying that bits of his body would fall off if he attempted anything quite so extreme, he insisted there was a serious point to his desire for autonomy.”I’ve seen a lot of cricketers reach the end of their career and it has crept up on them,” he said. “It happens very quickly, and in the end they have nothing to do. I want to forge another career so that there’s a natural progression for when I do have to finish cricket. Obviously it’s for personal reasons, but I’ve also got three kids and a family, and I want to provide for them. I want to work, and I didn’t want any restraints over that.”But I don’t think it’ll become the norm. Everyone gets lost a little bit in the rewards of playing Twenty20 cricket. The rewards come through playing Test matches and performing, because if you get your game right on the field, everything else will follow. I’ve experienced two sides of that, in my early 20s I took my eye off the ball and got carried away with other things, but then when I got my game right, the rewards are there for you.”We’ve got a new generation of cricketers who are going to watch Twenty20s and can identify with it a bit more, but I don’t think that’ll have a negative impact on Test cricket,” he said. “I still feel Test series, whether they are against Australia, South Africa or India, are the showcases of the summer. We’re very fortunate in England to play in front of full houses, and for me it’s everything. I’m bitterly disappointed I’m not going to be playing any more.”Flintoff added that he had not discussed his “freelance” decision with anyone outside his family and management group, but he nevertheless threw Kevin Pietersen’s name into the mix as an example of a player who he believed would not seek to follow his example. “Everyone’s asking will [Pietersen] do this and that, but he’s desperate to play for England. I don’t think it’ll be the start of anything new.”Years ago, Sir Garfield Sobers played for counties and Australian sides, and we’ve got a history of overseas players, and players going over to different counties,” he said. “This freelance thing is a bit out of context, especially as I’m contracted to Lancashire as well. I don’t think it’s going to start a trend.”I’m 31, I know my body and when I can play and not play,” he said. “I’ve still got some personal ambitions that I want to do. I’ve got some contractual obligations with Chennai next year, and if the opportunity arose to play in Australia [I’d look at that]. I’d have loved to go to Australia when I was younger, but through touring for the past 15 years I’ve not had the opportunity to do that.”The rumours of Flintoff’s future career moves continue to swirl, however, and he stated enigmatically that there would be more details emerging soon. He has been working with the UAE national cricket team while recuperating in Dubai, and has been offered some commentary work for next month’s Champions League in India, although that remains dependent on his recovery from surgery. He also denied reports that he is to appear in the next series of Strictly Come Dancing and I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.”Whatever I do, the cricket will come first, and I’ll build something around that,” he said, reiterating his insistence that he would continue to give his all for England, regardless of the risk of yet more injury. “If I got injured playing for England, then fine, but I wouldn’t pull out because I think I’m going to get injured, or to do something else. It’s not an option. I’m available for every England game. You can talk about different scenarios, but provided I’m fit and not on crutches, I’m ready to go.”

Arfield, Bassey, Sakala disappoint for Rangers

Glasgow Rangers won 3-0 at home to Dundee FC on Saturday afternoon, thanks to goals from Joe Aribo, a Ryan Sweeney own goal and Alfredo Morelos.

However, while the majority of Gers players would have been happy with their own performances, some may have felt as if they could have done better, as The Transfer Tavern uses statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst players (to have played at least 45 minutes) were for the Teddy Bears on the day:

Fashion Sakala

Admittedly joint with both Glen Kamara and Ianis Hagi in terms of SofaScore rating (7.3), Sakala comes in third as he played the whole game.

If not for the want of trying, the striker did lose out on six of his duels, and failed to score with all eight of his shots on goal.

He was also unsuccessful in three of his dribble attempts, and did not manage to intercept the ball in the attacking third, while he lost possession 15 times, the joint-second most out of any player in a Light Blues shirt.

Calvin Bassey

Bassey earned a 7.1 rating from SofaScore, which is still respectable, but unfortunately puts him in second spot in terms of the Ibrox faithful’s worst performers.

The central defender lost two of his fuels, and failed to block any shots or make any interceptions or tackles in the game.

He was also guilty of losing the ball on four occasions in total.

Scott Arfield

Arfield was the only RFC starter not to get a green rating from SofaScore, as they rated his performance at a 6.7.

The midfielder did not manage a single dribble, clearance, interception, tackle or key pass, while he also gave the ball away 11 times.

Thus, he was rated as Rangers’ worst player on the day.

Reinforced Australia prepare to fight back

Cricinfo previews the third ODI between India and Australia in Delhi

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale30-Oct-2009Match factsSaturday, October 31
Start time 14.30 (09.00GMT)Ricky Ponting’s resources have taken a severe hit in India•Associated Press

Big PictureRicky Ponting doesn’t like the idea of a seven-match ODI series. It’s too long, he believes. Now that the first two games in India are out of the way with one win each, he can pretend his team are about to embark on a five-match series. That of course ignores the question of momentum, which is firmly in India’s favour after their 99-run victory in Nagpur. Not a lot went right for Australia on Wednesday and, with injuries still plaguing their squad, they haven’t been able to enjoy a settled build-up to the third game in Delhi. Australia’s main problem surrounds their attack and its inability to contain India’s powerful batting line-up. An injured Brett Lee is flying home and an unfit James Hopes is expected to miss this clash, making India favourites to go 2-1 up.For India, there isn’t much they can improve on their Nagpur effort, although they’ll be keen for Sachin Tendulkar to post his first decent score of the series. MS Dhoni’s remarkable century in the second match, combined with strong efforts from Suresh Raina and Gautam Gambhir, have given Australia plenty of headaches leading into the Delhi encounter. The one key difference between Nagpur and Delhi should be the Feroz Shah Kotla pitch, which is not expected to produce a particularly high-scoring match.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Australia – LWWWW
India – WLWLW
Watch out for …Gautam Gambhir: Yes, it was Dhoni who stole the show in Nagpur but in both matches so far Gambhir has contributed substantially at the top of the order. In Vadodara, his 68 from 85 deliveries steadied India after the early loss of the openers, and in Nagpur, he made 76 off 80 balls to set up the platform from which Dhoni launched his assault. The Australians will be desperate to remove Gambhir early at the Kotla; India will look to their No. 3 for another anchoring role.Shaun Marsh: Indian viewers have seen the very best of Marsh during the IPL and Tim Paine’s departure should ensure Marsh opens with Shane Watson for the remainder of the series. He’s most comfortable at the top of the order and will be keen to re-establish himself as one of Australia’s permanent one-day openers following a six-month lay-off that started when he hurt his hamstring during the series in the UAE against Pakistan.Team newsWith no injuries to speak of, India have no reason to alter their line-up. After a 99-run victory, why would you?India (probable): 1 Sachin Tendulkar, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra. The situation isn’t so clear-cut for Australia. Lee’s elbow injury has ended his series and Hopes remains on the sidelines. Australia’s sub-standard bowling effort in Nagpur could bring Moises Henriques and Doug Bollinger into the equation, with Ben Hilfenhaus especially vulnerable having leaked 83 runs on Wednesday. Ponting wasn’t happy with the team balance in Nagpur, which could mean a debut for Henriques, probably at the expense of Adam Voges. Graham Manou will replace the injured Paine but won’t take his batting position and is likely to slot in at No. 7.Australia: (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Shaun Marsh, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Cameron White, 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Adam Voges/Moises Henriques, 7 Graham Manou (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 Ben Hilfenhaus/Doug Bollinger.Pitch and conditionsThe quality of the Kotla pitch in Delhi was slammed during the Champions League Twenty20, when slow, low bounce made it mighty hard to score runs. For the ODI the pitch is expected to be a bit better, but not much. Batsmen will need to be extra judicious in protecting against straight balls due to the low bounce. In short, don’t expect a repeat of the 354 India posted in Nagpur.Stats and trivia During the Adam Gilchrist years, Australia’s other wicketkeepers barely got a look-in as Brad Haddin held down the No. 2 spot. Things have quickly changed and Manou will be the fifth gloveman Australia have used in ODIs in just over 18 months, after Gilchrist, Haddin, Luke Ronchi and Paine. Australia haven’t played an ODI in Delhi since 1998, which means Ponting is the only man in their squad with international one-day experience there. MS Dhoni’s 124 in Nagpur was the highest score by any captain against Australia in an ODI, beating Sanath Jayasuriya’s 122 in 2003.Quotes”Although we were soundly outplayed the other day, the positive of that was we were one-nil up in the series, so we’re back to level pegging now, back to a five-match series really.”
.”We will try to carry the confidence from Nagpur and build on that rather than think about injuries to the Australians. Of course it’s a big problem for them … but we are focussing mainly on what we have to do well, and of course fielding is a major part.”

ENTENDA O CASO

No entanto, a situação trouxe descontentamento a vários clubes.

A DISCÓRDIA COMEÇA A SURGIR… E VEM A REVIRAVOLTA!
