Glenn McGrath is in his 40th year. He is a man raising two children and, with a little help from his friends, running a major charity organisation founded by his wife, Jane, who passed away last year after a long battle with cancer.Clearly, McGrath is a man with much on his plate and more on his mind. And yet, in the coming weeks, he will add to his many commitments by pushing his frame through five gruelling weeks of competition with the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. It is, by any estimate, a massive ask, and even more so when it is considered McGrath has not sent down a delivery in international cricket since the 2007 World Cup final. With his day-to-day activities largely focussed on a non-profit organisation, the opportunity to earn for his family – his auction price was $US350,000 – serves as a major motivation for McGrath as he enters his second IPL season. But this is no charity case. Last year, while contending with much heartache at home, the Australian paceman earned his pay cheque by emerging as the most economical (6.61) and durable (14 games) of Delhi’s bowlers. McGrath believes more is to come this time around.”I struggled a bit last year, but that was more about Jane and how the situation was back home,” McGrath told Cricinfo. “That won’t be a concern this time. Mum may bring the kids over for the middle period, depending on the schedule. My whole focus will be a lot different when I’m there, which I think will all be positive. Last time I think I did reasonably well considering I hadn’t played for 12 months. I have no doubts it will be similar this time, but my mindset will be different.”There is a lot of incentive going over there with the money they’re offering. Cricket is not something that I have a great desire to get back and play at the moment. I’m very happy being retired and with everything that I achieved in my life. In saying that, as soon as I got on the field in India (in 2008), I couldn’t help being competitive. My natural instincts came out and I was away. That won’t be an issue.”Last year I did a heap of fitness work leading into it, and when I bowled in the nets for half a session I felt like I hadn’t ever been away from the game. When I played that Twenty20 match earlier on in the year for New South Wales, and I hadn’t done any work leading into it, it felt like I had never bowled before in my life. So basically if I’m fit my bowling will come back really quickly, and if I’m not fit I’m useless.”McGrath will arrive in Delhi the coming days for the Daredevils’ week-long training camp before departing with the squad for South Africa on April 7. It is, he says, a time of great excitement, as cricket taps ever deeper into the rich resource that is Twenty20 cricket. But there is cause for concern, too. While McGrath and his metronomic action are unburdened by international commitments these days, the same cannot be said of the IPL’s other major drawcards. Already, Sri Lanka have withdrawn from the spring tour of England due to their players’ collective desire to compete in the IPL, while cricketers from the West Indies – called in as eleventh-hour replacements – are upset at being denied the opportunity to play the full five weeks in South Africa.”To me, the best thing the ICC could do is make a window for it,” McGrath said. “You’ll stop people having to make a decision. Some guys have to make a decision between playing for their country or go over there and play for six-to-eight weeks and pocket $2 million. As much as you’d like to think they’d have their priorities right, that’s a lot of money. You can set yourself up and have that security for your family.”[A window] would be a huge thing for cricket, and hopefully safeguard it against anything detrimental happening to the game. You’re not going to stop it. When I started playing, and the way I still feel now, Test match cricket is the ultimate. But now, with Twenty20 and the potential for what you can earn, soon people will be saying Twenty20 is the ultimate. I’d hate to see it affect Test cricket too much. Hopefully, if there’s that window there, you can get back and play Test cricket and focus on that.”McGrath will presumably attract much attention in India as he plies his trade for the Delhi Daredevils, but in his native Australia, it is his charitable work that has attracted most publicity of late. In January, Cricket Australia declared day three of the Sydney Test “Jane McGrath Day”, and SCG patrons responded by dressing in pink attire – the colour of the McGrath Foundation – and donating generously. Indeed, McGrath’s work for the foundation was recognised with his nomination for the prestigious Australian of the Year Award – more than a year after his retirement from cricket.”I’m just Jane McGrath’s husband these days,” he quips. “The support for the foundation has been amazing. To be honest I don’t know if it could’ve gone any smoother if I had a genie and three wishes.”On the way out to the SCG one day, I got stopped at the traffic lights and someone handed $100 through the window from the car next door. They said, ‘We love what you doing with the foundation, and we want to support you.’ I was a bit tired and probably a little bit grumpy, and that really picked me up. I thought, ‘That’s what it’s all about.’ It’s amazing how one little gesture can change your whole day. I still have to pinch myself with just how it went.”My involvement is increasing. I still have sponsors that I work for. I have to spend time with the kids. I still have to put bread and milk on the table. It would be great to do stuff for the foundation 24-7, but someone has got to pay the bills.”

Liverpool eye move for Adama Traore

With 17 goals scored in just seven Premier League games so far this season, Liverpool have found the back of the net more than any other top-flight team.

Despite this impressive record, it seems as though the Merseyside club have their eyes on signing a new attacking star to add to their squad.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Spanish media outlet El Nacional (via Liverpool Echo) that Liverpool are interested in making a move to sign Wolves winger Adama Traore, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £43k-per-week according to Spotrac.

Since joining the Midlands club back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Championship club Middlesbrough for a fee of £18m, Traore has gone on to make a total of 140 appearances for the Old Gold across all competitions in which he has managed to score ten goals and provide 18 assists along the way.

Klopp is a big fan

Even though the Spaniard only managed to score two goals and provide two assists throughout their previous Premier League campaign, the fact that he ended the season as their joint-highest rated player with an overall performance rating of 7.11/10 according to WhoScored in 37 league appearances, suggest he’s a valuable player.

Indeed, he is one of the trickest individuals in the Premier League. So far this term, he’s recorded a truly mind-boggling seven dribbles per game. That’s more than anyone at Liverpool, including a certain Mohamed Salah.

In fact, no one across Europe’s top five leagues can amass dribbling stats quite like Traore’s. He tops the tree, usurping the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe on his way to amassing 49 already this season.

In regards to a potential move to Anfield, we feel that if he were to join the Merseyside club, he probably wouldn’t be playing as regularly as he has been at Wolves given Salah’s current form. He has managed to score nine goals in nine appearances for them so far this season across all competitions.

However, with Salah’s contract set to run out in 2023, we feel that Traore, who was once described as “unplayable” by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, could be a suitable replacement for the Egyptian if he doesn’t sign a new deal at the club, especially if he manages to add more goals and assists to his game.

If the Reds see an opportunity to sign the 25-year-old, they should definitely do so to make sure they have enough attacking depth in their squad for the future. After hailing the dazzling winger in the past, it would clearly make Klopp very happy.

Ian Bell has been recalled, while Matt Prior retains his 50-over wicketkeeping role and Tim Bresnan follows Test selection with a call-up.Andrew Strauss leads what is a far less adventurous squad than the Twenty20 party announced earlier today, with Morgan the most eye-catching name. Andrew Flintoff has been ruled out after knee surgery although the selectors are confident he will be fit for the ICC World Twenty20.Ryan Sidebottom, who has recovered from his Achilles operation, replaces Steve Harmison from the squad that won 3-2 in West Indies while a fit-again Graeme Swann is back in place of Gareth Batty. The wicketkeeping position continues to be a hotly-debated position and Prior has been retained ahead of James Foster who got the nod for the Twenty20. Saints: Redmond was on fire vs Leeds United

Much to the relief of everyone at Southampton, the Saints managed to secure their first Premier League win of the season with a 1-0 win over Leeds United at St. Mary’s thanks to a goal from on-loan striker Armando Broja after drawing four and losing three of their opening seven league games of their 2021/22 campaign.

Even though the striker managed to score the winning goal and deliver Southampton’s first league win of the campaign, one player that stood out to us in the match was Nathan Redmond, who assisted Broja’s strike.

During the victory against Marcelo Bielsa’s side, Redmond managed to have one shot on target which came after some brilliant interlinking play on the edge of the area.

On top of that, he successfully completed all four dribble attempts, made a whopping six key passes and produced five accurate crosses during a supreme creative display. Furthermore, the winger won five out of the seven ground duels he was involved in, ultimately earning himself an impressive overall match rating of 8.5/10, making him the highest-rated Southampton player on the day according to SofaScore.

Taking into account how Redmond, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £60k-per-week according to Spotrac, had failed to score a goal or provide an assist for the Saints in the league prior to the Leeds win, despite playing in all but one of their matches, shows how important this assist was, not just for the team as a whole but for him individually.

Since joining the club back in the 2016 summer transfer window from fellow Premier League club for an undisclosed fee believed to be worth £10m, the 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £16.2m according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 208 appearances for the Saints across all competitions in which he has managed to score 28 goals and provide 23 assists along the way.

Additionally, only James Ward-Prowse (119) and Jan Bednarek (111) have made more appearances for Southampton under Ralph Hasenhuttl than Redmond (104), proving how vital he has been for the Saints in recent years under the Austrian’s guidance.

Looking ahead to the rest of the campaign, if Redmond and the Saints can build on this win against Leeds and keep picking up positive results on a consistent basis, then they could put their poor start to the season behind them and cast away any doubts over being involved in a potential relegation battle.

Rohit and Gambhir script emphatic win

Finally India and Pakistan played out a one-sided Twenty20 game, with India cantering home by nine wickets

The Bulletin by Sidharth Monga03-Jun-2009India 159 for 1 (Rohit 80, Gambhir 52*) beat Pakistan 158 for 6 (Misbah 37*, Younis 32, Ishant 1-11) by nine wickets

Finally India and Pakistan played out a one-sided Twenty20 game. Filling in for Virender Sehwag as opener, Rohit Sharma continued to give India a combination dilemma and made the chase seem like an afternoon walk in a London park. A target of 159, with extra bowlers available by the virtue of this being a 13-a-side game, was by no means an easy one, but Gautam Gambhir and Rohit managed with the ease that belies the tension an India-Pakistan match brings.Nothing about this encounter suggested it was a warm-up game. The sell-out crowd, and the intensity in the first innings was something even the final of the actual tournament will be proud of. But in the second innings, Pakistan went into the experiment mode. They went in with an interesting strategy, interchanging the usual roles between Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir. Gul, who usually bowls in the last 10 overs, opened the bowling, and Tanvir came on to bowl in the 10th over – none of the moves worked.Nothing about Rohit’s innings suggested that he was a makeshift opener. Although Gambhir kickstarted things with three boundaries in the first three overs, including one off Gul’s first ball, it was Rohit who took the match away from Pakistan. He got going with a heave over mid-on in the third over, but the slogs were conspicuous by absence in the rest of his innings.Yasir Arafat, who bowled three overs at the top of the innings, went for a six in his second and two boundaries in his third. The 17-year-old prodigy Mohammad Aamer produced good pace in his first over, but he too was pulled for four by Rohit. By the end of the seventh over, when Pakistan threw the final roll of the dice – the spinners – India had already reached 65.The batsmen played out Saeed Ajmal’s first over quietly, but in Shahid Afridi’s first over Gautam Gambhir joined the party, with a short-arm-pull over midwicket. Tanvir, in his first over, was hit for perhaps the shot of the day, a yorker flicked to fine leg. By the time captain Younis Khan called the spinners back, Rohit was in the mood for some fun, hitting Ajmal inside-out and pulling Afridi over midwicket. When he got out for a 53-ball 80, India needed only 19 runs in four overs.Lack of discipline and a few big hits from MS Dhoni and Gambhir meant the game ended in the next over. Quite fittingly, Pakistan finished the match with a wide.It wasn’t as facile when the old sparring partners started off for the first time since last year’s Asia Cup in Karachi. They wasted little time in going for punches and counter-punches during a frenetically-paced first innings. A wicket in the first over didn’t deter Ahmed Shehzad and Kamran Akmal from counterattacking spectacularly with a 25-ball 43-run stand. They stumbled just as sensationally, losing the next three wickets on the same score before the two coolest heads in the team, Younis and Misbah-ul-Haq, rebuilt and took Pakistan to what seemed a fighting total.Praveen Kumar and Shehzad set the agenda early. Praveen followed two bouncers with an outswinger to clean up Shahzaib Hasan. Akmal then crashed the first ball after the wicket through the covers for four. In the next over, Shehzad hit RP Singh for three boundaries, an over during which he was also dropped by Harbhajan Singh at short midwicket.Dhoni quickly called on the raw pace of Ishant Sharma and the effect was immediate. First Suresh Raina ran out Akmal through superb work at cover, and Shehzad top-edged a pull in the same over. The panic set in when a promoted Shahid Afridi went boom first ball he faced from Irfan and managed just an outside edge to Dhoni – 45 for 1 had become 45 for 4.Shoaib Malik counterattacked, but fell soon. Either side of Malik’s dismissal, no boundary was hit for 42 balls until Misbah made room and lofted Ojha to wide long-on in the 13th over. By the time Younis fell for a run-a-ball 32, the two had been added 50 in 45 balls. Arafat and Misbah provided the final impetus, scoring 29 in the last two overs, but it proved to be way below-par on the night.
