'India-Sri Lanka series currently only speculation' – BCCI

The BCCI will decide on a one-day series with Sri Lanka only after it receives a response from New Zealand Cricket (NZC), possibly within this week, on its request for adding an extra Test to the original two-Test series schedule

Cricinfo staff05-Jan-2009An Indian one-day series against Sri Lanka is still in the realm of speculation, the BCCI has said, and will be considered only after the board receives a response from New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on its request for adding an extra Test to the original two-Test tour schedule.Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s chief administrative officer, told Cricinfo the Indian board is yet to exchange any official written communication with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in this regard. “What is official so far is that we have requested New Zealand to accommodate an extra Test to the series in March,” Shetty said. “We are waiting for a response from their side.”Asked about the one-day series against Sri Lanka, he said, “We will move on any such series only after the New Zealand schedule is confirmed. We expect a positive response from New Zealand but they are the home board and will have to consider the logistics at their end.”New Zealand Cricket (NZC) are hoping to take a decision by this weekend over India’s request. A spokesperson for NZC confirmed to , via e-mail, that the proposal had been received and was under consideration.”NZC has received a request from BCCI for an additional Test. NZC is currently considering the request and investigating the feasibility of extending the tour. No decision has been made yet. It is hoped that a decision will be reached before the end of this week”, the e-mail reply read.Andy Moles, the new New Zealand coach, has already welcomed the opportunity to play another Test against India, “time willing”. New Zealand are currently hosting West Indies and their international schedule is packed till February 13, when they complete a one-day series in Australia. The BCCI had asked NZC to accommodate an extra Test for the series starting on March 6 – two Tests, five ODIs, one Twenty20 – after the Indian government refused to clear the Indian team’s tour to Pakistan this month. Sri Lanka subsequently agreed to tour Pakistan during the same period but last week, Gamini Lokuge, Sri Lanka’s sports minister, said that SLC officials were also in talks with their Indian counterparts to arrange a one-day series. Shetty admitted there “may have been some verbal communication” between certain Indian and Sri Lankan officials on a one-day series but insisted that nothing concrete has emerged.Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had proposed splitting the team’s Pakistan tour into two legs, with plans of host India in the gap between the two. However, the PCB said no such arrangement had been decided yet. “There is no doubt they are coming,” Ijaz Butt, the Pakistan board chairman, told . “Breaking the tour into two halves is not final as yet and the Sri Lankans have to send us an approved itinerary.”

Newcastle: Bruce confirms Callum Wilson blow

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has confirmed a major injury blow before tonight’s Premier League game against Leeds United at St James’ Park.

What’s the story?

The Magpies find themselves inside the relegation zone heading into tonight’s game against Marcelo Bielsa’s side, and Steve Bruce will be desperately hoping for a bit of respite.

However, they will have to do so once again without their main man up front, with the Newcastle boss confirming that while Callum Wilson has made good progress on his injury, he’s not quite ready to make an appearance just yet.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Bruce said of the 29-year-old: “We’re not going to put a time on it. He’s making good progress. Unfortunately, he’s not made it.”

Fans will be gutted

The former Bournemouth striker has been a rare shining light for Newcastle over the past year or so and marked his debut campaign for the Magpies last season with 12 goals in just 26 Premier League games despite struggling for consistent action through injury.

This season has also seen him start off well, netting twice in the opening three fixtures, and it’s no surprise that he’s the man on whom Newcastle rely to lead the line and score their goals. In fact, Joe Willock was the only other player in their squad to score more than four times in last season’s Premier League.

The £19.8m-rated Wilson has earned rave reviews in his time playing in the Premier League, with Eddie Howe, his former manager at Bournemouth, particularly fulsome in his praise of the centre-forward.

The ex-Cherries boss said: “He is an outstanding player with unique attributes for us. He has that ability to run in behind and he’s got the work ethic off the ball and, of course, he knows where the goal is.”

The fact that Wilson will once again be missing from action tonight is a body blow and big setback to Newcastle, and Magpies fans will surely be gutted at seeing him missing a game from which they desperately need a win to get their season going.

Meanwhile, Bruce must drop this player tonight…

Exclusive: Jemson drops major Maja to Forest claim

Former Nottingham Forest star Nigel Jemson insists that the club’s owner Evangelos Marinakis has to be praised for backing the managers despite their poor start to the season.

Forest enjoyed a busy summer of recruitment, bringing in no fewer than nine first-team players, with five of those being loan deals.

Forest have, of course, sacked Chris Hughton after a terrible run of form that saw them lose six and draw one of their first seven games.

After the departure of the former Newcastle United boss, Forest won their first game of the season, against Huddersfield Town at the weekend, before appointing former Swansea City boss Steve Cooper to try and turn their campaign around.

Previously, the club had been linked with a swoop to sign former Sunderland striker Josh Maja from Bordeaux in Ligue 1, a deal that would have cost the club a total of £4m.

Jemson believes that such interest is a sign of just how committed owner Evangelos Marinakis is to the cause at the City Ground.

He said: “I think you’ve got to compliment the owner, he’s always given the manager money if he wants a certain player. It would have been an exciting prospect for him to come over but you don’t know the ins and outs, whether it’s more money or up front or installments or whatever it can be, or whether he’s turned it down, we don’t honestly know.

“But you have to be sure if you’re going to spend £4.5m on a player in the Championship, you’ve got to make sure he’s the right one.”

Yuvraj Singh has been cleared of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct by the match referee Chris Broad at a hearing after the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo.Yuvraj had been charged under Level 1.3 of the code, which refers to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”. He had been adjudged lbw off Nuwan Kulasekara when on 66; the ball was going on to hit the stumps but Yuvraj had got a big inside edge onto the pads which the umpire had failed to spot. He waited at the crease for a few seconds on receiving the decision, before trudging off.The incident was reported by on-field umpires Brian Jerling and Gamini Silva, as well as third umpire Kumar Dharmasena. “After reviewing video evidence of the incident, I am of the opinion that there was no conclusive evidence that Yuvraj showed dissent at the decision,” Broad said. “He did stay at the crease but the delay in departing was not excessive and I felt he showed a level of disappointment rather than dissent.”Besides Yuvraj and the three umpires, India coach Gary Kirsten and team manager Prakash Dixit were also present at the hearing.

Australia take big lead on curtailed day

A dazzling century from AB de Villiers – his eighth, in his 50th Test -entertained the faithful on Fanatical Fans Day, but it was Australia that continued to dominate the opening Test at the Wanderers

A dazzling century from AB de Villiers – his eighth, in his 50th Test -entertained the faithful on Fanatical Fans Day, but it was Australia that continued to dominate the opening Test at the Wanderers. Having bowled South Africa out for just 220, they decidednot to enforce the follow-on, and had added a further 51 for the loss ofSimon Katich before bad light ended play with 30.3 overs still to bebowled in the day.Katich was flummoxed by a nasty delivery from Morne Morkel that he couldonly nick behind, but with Phillip Hughes playing some classy cuts anddrives interspersed with moments of acute discomfort against the shortball, the lead swelled before the light became too poor to continue. SouthAfrica could have had him just before the tea break when Morkel got him tofend one behind off the glove. With the umpire unsure, Graeme Smithdecided not to go for the referral.South Africa started the day poorly and never really recovered. The keywickets were those of Neil McKenzie and JP Duminy. McKenzie’s 125-ballvigil fetched him just 36, but he had managed to glue together anindifferent top-order performance. Peter Siddle angled one in to strikehim low on the pad and Steve Bucknor had no doubt at all. McKenziereckoned he might have got an inside-edge, but TV replays suggestednothing of the sort. That ended a 44-run partnership, and reunited two of the heroes of thePerth victory that was the springboard for South African success inAustralia. An appeal for a catch down the leg side off Duminy couldn’t bereferred because the appropriate replay couldn’t be found, and theAustralian mood got worse when Ricky Ponting put down a chance to hisright at second slip after Duminy edged an away-going delivery fromMitchell Johnson. It had been hard going for South Africa, with Siddle generating livelypace and Ben Hilfenhaus giving them nothing whatsoever to hit. When deVilliers struck gorgeous off and cover drives from successive Hilfenhausdeliveries, it seemed that the shackles might be broken, but it proved tobe the cruellest of false dawns.Duminy had repeatedly been targeted with the short ball, and when Johnsondirected one at the body, the fend only found Brad Haddin’s gloves downthe leg side. Moments later, the controversy. A beautiful delivery angledacross Mark Boucher and squared him up completely. Billy Bowden’s fingerwent up almost as soon as the keeper and slips did, but Boucher wasconvinced he hadn’t hit it.Another referral, and yet more disappointment for South Africa. With theimages inconclusive, Asad Rauf, the third umpire, had no option but touphold Bowden’s decision. Off trudged Boucher, leaving de Villiers withsole responsibility for resurrecting the innings. He got to his 50 from122 balls, and then said hello to Marcus North with a superb heave overmidwicket, but it was all going awry at the other end.Morkel decided to stand and deliver against Siddle, and the top-edge waseasily taken by the bowler himself and when Paul Harris was given out legbefore to North despite the ball striking his toe outside the line, thefollow-on was imminent. The Australian lead would have been even healthierbut for another fielding lapse. Siddle induced a nick from de Villiers, then on 64, and Haddin dived across in front of first slip and spilled it.Steyn was peppered with bouncers, and when one was fended off awkwardly,Marcus North couldn’t back-peddle quickly enough from first slip to takethe catch. De Villiers continued to work the ball around and swung Northto the midwicket boundary to move into the 90s. Andrew McDonald wasperhaps unlucky not to have him leg before for 92, but the third umpiredidn’t see enough to reverse Bowden’s decision after Australia opted for areferral.Steyn eventually edged McDonald to first slip, but an emphatic pull forfour off Hilfenhaus took de Villiers to a richly deserved century. Just intime too, because Ntini didn’t last very long. The series may only havebeen three days old, but suddenly, all the talk of South Africa and theNo.1 ranking was looking a little premature.
