Leeds United get transfer boost over Lewis O’Brien

Leeds United have been handed a golden chance to sign Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien amid a recent transfer update.

What’s the story?

Journalist Alan Nixon had previously revealed via Twitter that O’Brien was “very near” to the top of the shortlist for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this summer as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

And now, according to The Daily Mirror (print edition, page 64, August 22, 2021), the Terriers will sell the midfielder for around £8m.

And former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has delivered his seal of approval over a potential late move for O’Brien this summer.

He said: “They are weaker without Kalvin Phillips in there, for sure.

“The Man United game, I thought they’d have lost without him anyway. But he is so important to them and it is massive for Leeds to have him back. But O’Brien does stiffen that midfield up. He’s a really, really good player. I think they will definitely look to strengthen.”

He’s better than Klich

In O’Brien, Leeds could find someone who could be a real upgrade on Mateusz Klich in the middle of the park, with Huddersfield Town writer Steven Chicken raving about the 22-year-old’s ability to cover ground and put his foot in.

He said: “O’Brien is a left-footed, tough-tackling central midfielder. Former Huddersfield boss Danny Cowley often praised O’Brien as being ‘like having two players’, with the midfielder receiving particular praise from his manager and fans alike for his ability and willingness to rush back and win the ball with a clean sliding tackle whenever his side were caught on the counter-attack.

“He certainly has the potential to be (a Premier League player), if he’s not already.”

Former Huddersfield goalkeeper, Matt Glennon, added to those sentiments by saying: “He closes down until the 95th, 96th minute, still running to the corners, stopping defenders, he’s got unlimited energy.

“Lewis O’Brien wants to put the hard yards in and wants to be at the very top of where he can get to. He’s one of those lads who works ridiculously hard which, for me, is your minimum in any league, but he’s got that quality, the drop of a shoulder, that strength to keep people off him, a low centre of gravity to glide past people, arm aloft when they try to knock him off the ball.”

And, when you look at the key stats between O’Brien and Klich, it’s the Terriers ace who comes out on top.

As per Whoscored, O’Brien averaged more tackles, interceptions, dribbles and fouls won per game last season than his Polish counterpart, and given the fact he is several years younger – almost a decade in fact – he should come on leaps and bounds over the coming campaigns.

His tally of three goals and three assists – compared to Klich’s four and five respectively – came in a campaign which saw him play a number of different positions including holding midfield and left-back, so there’s real potential for him to develop that end product even further.

The Whites could sign a real upgrade on Klich by landing O’Brien this summer, and the latest transfer update on his future has gifted them a golden chance to do so.

Meanwhile, Leeds are eyeing this Premier League record breaker…

Salisbury earns Warwickshire promotion

A round-up of the final day’s County Championship action from the penultimate set of matches

Cricinfo staff20-Sep-2008Warwickshire secured promotion, and now need just four points to grab the Division Two title off Worcestershire, after a dramatic final-day, six-wicket victory charge against Essex at Chelmsford. The match appeared to be heading for a draw as John Maunders (107) and Ravi Bopara (133) added 241 for the second wicket. But Ian Salisbury sparked a rapid collapse as Essex lost nine for 69, leaving Warwickshire to knock off 144 in 45 overs. They cruised home with plenty of time to spare, Darren Maddy hitting 63 off 99 balls. However, their real final-day matchwinner was Salisbury, who turned the game on its head, with a spell of 6 for 27 in 11.4 overs. Maunders hit his first Championship hundred and Bopara continued the form he has shown most of the summer with his fourth century. Then Bopara was caught behind and Maunders soon followed, sweeping to Jim Troughton. Salisbury broke a 30-run stand between James Foster and Mark Pettini by having Foster caught and bowled, while Essex didn’t help themselves as Pettini and Chris Wright were run out. Salisbury snapped up the final two wickets to complete his best figures for Warwickshire and his fifth five-wicket haul of the season. Tony Frost, who scored 242 in the first innings, added 71 with Maddy and the victory came with more than six overs to spare.Graham Wagg completed match figures of 10 for 133 as he helped bowl Derbyshire to a 117-run victory against Gloucestershire at Derby. It was a tough ask for Gloucestershire heading into the final day, needing 280 more with eight wickets in hand, and it became even tougher when Hamish Marshall fell early to the swing of Charl Langeveldt. Alex Gidman, driving to point, also fell to Langeveldt and the major early resistance came from nightwatchman Steve Kirby. He took 111 balls over his 28 until being trapped in front by Langeveldt. Seam and spin then chipped through the lower order before Wagg rounded off his impressive game by bowling Anthony Ireland. Wagg became just the third Derbyshire player to take 10 wickets in a match and score 100 runs and the first since 1934.Glamorgan claimed their third Championship win of the season with a 10-wicket success against Leicestershire despite a defiant century from Paul Nixon at Sophia Gardens. The visitors began the final day already four wickets down in the follow-on and soon lost Josh Cobb. Jim Allenby helped Nixon add 51 for the sixth wicket before being stumped off Robert Croft, but the tail didn’t fold. Nixon reached his hundred off 196 balls with No. 11, Garnet Kruger, for company and shortly after Dean Cosker claimed his first wicket to leave Glamorgan needing 63. They completed the chase with ease, as Gareth Rees and David Hemp took 12.5 overs to knock off the runs.

A round-up of the second day of the first-round matches of the Pentangular Cup

Cricinfo staff26-Oct-2008ScorecardA last-wicket stand of 61 between Usman Saeed and Shoaib Akhtar pushed Federal Areas to 322 in Karachi, but at the end of the second day Sind were in with a good chance of taking the first-innings lead. Rizwan Ahmed, the legspinning allrounder, was unbeaten on 40 as the hosts finished at 288 for 7, trailing by 34.Saeed had led the a fightback on the first day, and he frustrated Sind, adding 33 to his overnight score of 103. The rest of the batsmen failed to build on starts as well: Naumanullah scored 15, Faisal Iqbal 32, Fawad Alam 34 and captain Shahid Afridi hit a quick 21-ball 17. At 211 for 6, there was a chance Sind would fold up quickly but wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed hit five fours in a 33-ball 36 and Rizwan pushed to 40 to tick the score along. Sarfraz fell with the score on 262, but Anwar Ali and Rizwan remained unbeaten till stumps. For Federal Areas, Sohail Tanvir was the most successful, with 3 for 72 off his 20 overs. Spurs eye Doku, could be Nuno’s next Traore

Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Jeremy Doku, according to reports…

What’s the word?

French outlet Jeunes Footeux claim that Spurs have set their sights on a potential move for the Rennes winger and he is of great interest to Nuno Santo.

The 19-year-old gem has regularly been linked to Premier League rivals Liverpool, where manager Jurgen Klopp sees him as the perfect heir to Sadio Mane.

It remains to be seen whether the Ligue 1 outfit will let a key player leave so close to the end of the transfer window, though it’s thought they could be tempted into a sale for a fee of around €50m (£43m).

Nuno’s next Traore?

As evident in the report, Doku’s profile has clearly caught the attention of the Portuguese in north London and with Lucas Moura his only true right-sided option in attack, it’s no surprise that Spurs could make a move for him.

It’s a role that is crucial to Nuno’s system, as seen up at Wolves, where he had the powerful, explosive exploits of Adama Traore. He’s another player that has been linked to Spurs in recent days, so perhaps a new attacker is now on the agenda.

However, according to the Telegraph, the Spaniard is not for sale this window.

If the Lilywhites were to switch their attention to the emerging Belgian sensation, then Nuno may well find his next Traore anyway.

Doku possesses the exact same qualities as the Molineux star.

As per WhoScored, the £60m-rated dynamo completed 3.7 dribbles per outing last season, on top of 1.4 key passes, whilst his league rival, Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe, lauded his speed to France Football.

“Recently, I was speaking with my father about a player who impressed me because of his speed qualities, that is (Jeremy) Doku, at Rennes. In 5 years as a professional, I have never seen someone from a standing start demonstrate so much power.”

Last season under Nuno, Traore managed more dribbles per game (4.1) than any other player and was lauded as a “machine” by BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand (via the Birmingham Mail) as he’s “powerful and quick” and can scare defenders.

The similarities between the two players are quite clear. Spurs’ sporting director Fabio Paratici could well secure Nuno his new Traore by launching a bid for the Rennes hotshot.

Doku has also received praise from one of the Premier League’s best players, Kevin De Bruyne, who described his fellow countryman as a “diamond in the rough.”

Spurs must look to secure the Belgian before Tuesday’s deadline.

The Big PictureInstead of Hyderabad, the ICL teams will now return to Ahmedabad – which will host the best-of-three finals. The last leg begins with a meeting between the two overseas teams. Dhaka Warriors are buoyant after shrugging off a slow start to the tournament with three consecutive wins against Mumbai Champs, Chandigarh Lions and Ahmedabad Rockets. Two points in their final game of the league phase will assure them a spot in the last four.Lahore Badshahs have been erratic through the tournament, with three wins and three losses. Though there is an extra game in hand, they would not want to leave matters till the end, especially with their final game against table-toppers Chennai Superstars. Mohammad Yousuf’s entry will be a boost in their push to secure a semi-final spot.Where they rankDhaka, currently fourth with eight points, would look to rise further up with maximum points from this game. A win would seal a semis spot, but a loss would just make it a little nervy. Lahore if they win, will be level on points with Dhaka and with another game against already-qualified Chennai to follow, would fancy their chances to go ahead, on points, and not leave it down to net run-rate. Lahore, in sixth position with six points, will have it all to do and wins in their two remaining games are a must if they are to keep afloat in the tournament.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)Dhaka: WWWLW
Lahore: WLWWLStatsLahore’s Imran Nazir holds the record for the maximum number of sixes in an innings – nine against Mumbai. Alok Kapali, has not only registered the first hundred in ICL history, against Hyderabad, but also holds the record for the most number of sixes (17) in the tournament.Khalid Mahmoood, Lahore’s wicketkeeper, shares the top spot with Bengal’s Deep Dasgupta and Delhi’s Paul Nixon for the most number of dismissals. His eight dismissals include six catches and two stumpings.Players to watchWhile Alok Kapali has been hogging the limelight for Dhaka, Nazimuddin has quietly picked up two Man-of-the-Match awards. His 29-ball 54 against Delhi and 48 off the same number of balls against Ahmedabad bears witness the annihilation he is capable of at the top of the innings.Lahore’s leading run-scorer Imran Nazir has been a revelation in the tournament with an average of 41.50 backed by an impressive strike rate of 144.34. He was merciless against Mumbai when he smashed an unbeaten 83 of 38 balls, and Inzamam will look for a similar start from the opener in the next two pressure games.Quotes”There is no room for complacency and we are not thinking of giving any team a leeway.”
