Premiado, o centroavante teve participação avassaladora no título do Atlético Nacional (COL), ano passado.

A escalação do Palmeiras deve ter: Fernando Prass; Jean, Edu Dracena, Vitor Hugo e Zé Roberto; Thiago Santos e Felipe Melo; Willian (Michel Bastos), Dudu e Keno; Borja. O jogo começa às 21h45, no estádio Monumental José Fierro.

Norwich Union League gets under way with a cracker

The Norwich Union League season opened with what will quite possibly be regarded as the match of the season even when September 22nd is reached

The Norwich Union League season opened with what will quite possibly be regarded as the match of the season even when September 22nd is reached. The bare statistic says that Yorkshire Phoenix won by one run against Somerset Sabres. What that conceals is that the home side were chasing a target of 308. Centuries for Darren Lehmann and Matthew Wood for the Yorkshiremen looked to be enough, but a brave reply from the home batsmen featuring 99 from Jamie Cox and 79 from Ian Blackwell so nearly got them to the target. Elsewhere, there were wins for Warwickshire Bears, Leicestershire Foxes, Derbyshire Scorpions, Hampshire Hawks and Surrey Lions.Ian Bell might not have lived up to expectations since returning from the National Academy, hence his name was rubbed out from the Test side into which it had earlier been pencilled. Nevertheless, he reminded the selectors that he can still bat with an innings of 72 for Warwickshire Bears against Durham Dynamos at Chester-le-Street. The Bears reached 207 for 7 in their 45 overs, more than enough to secure victory as the Dynamos lacked the power to reach more than 163 for nine to lose by 44 runs.Trevor Ward and Darren Stevens both scored 91 as Leicestershire Foxes posted 283 for five against Nottinghamshire Outlaws at Grace Road. They put on 185 for the second wicket, and did not take long about it. Stevens took just 74 balls with ten fours and a six. Ward took a little longer, but hit 13 fours and a six in his 95 ball innings before Michael Bevan weighed in with a swift 42 not out. Usman Afzaal managed 63 to top score for the Outlaws, but there was not enough support to prevent the Foxes getting home by 32 runs.In Division Two, the Sussex Sharks batsmen never got going against the Derbyshire Scorpions at Derby. As the Sharks sunk to 166 for eight in their 45 overs, there were some pretty tidy bowling figures, with the pick of them being Graeme Welch’s 9-2-45-3, although Dominic Cork conceded just 20 runs from his nine overs and took a wicket. Michael Di Venuto led the Scorpions’ reply with 84 as his side reached the target with four wickets and three overs in hand.Nic Pothas was brought into the Hampshire Hawks side to add some international experience to the wicket-keeper/batsman role, and obliged with 53 not out against Gloucestershire Gladiators. Derek Kenway reached 50 as well. In reply, Dimitri Mascarenhas took five for 27 as the Hawks won by 46 runs, despite Craig Spearman’s innings of 82.They say lightening never strikes twice in the same place, but having lost in the championship on Saturday, Lancashire Lightening were devoured at The Oval 24 hours later by Surrey Lions. Martin Bicknell took five for 26 in his nine overs and there were five catches for Alec Stewart as the northerners were skittled for just 68. The Londoners managed to lose four wickets in reaching the target inside 12 overs.

Barry Fry critical of West Brom owner after Valerien Ismael deal

Barry Fry has criticised West Bromwich Albion’s hierarchy after sending mixed messages during their search for a new manager.

Valerien Ismael was appointed as Albion’s new boss last month, taking over after Sam Allardyce decided against signing an extended contract following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

The Baggies, who have suffered an immediate return to the Championship, paid a £2million compensation fee to ensure they could steal Ismael away from Barnsley.

But Peterborough United director of football Fry insists the move came as a shock as it involved West Brom changing their initial plans.

Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton was among the original names linked with taking over at the Hawthorns but owner Guochuan Lai decided against firming up the interest due to being unwilling to pay compensation for his services.

Former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was originally linked with the club, along with ex-Huddersfield Town chief David Wagner, but Ismael has been handed the reins.

Fry, speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, said: “I’ve heard all sorts of things about the owner. He didn’t want to pay any compensation to anybody and that’s why they didn’t get Michael Appleton from Lincoln.

“Wilder was certainly the choice of all the fans but the owner obviously didn’t fancy that one.

“The club have now gone for the Barnsley manager and paid £2million. Six weeks ago, the owner said he wasn’t going to pay any compensation for anybody.”

Liverpool willing to £25m for Adama Traore

Liverpool are reportedly willing to pay £25m for the services of Wolves winger Adama Traore this summer as Jurgen Klopp eyes up wide reinforcements.

The Lowdown: Traore linked with Reds switch

The Reds have only made one signing so far in this window, with Ibrahima Konate joining from RB Leipzig back in May.

More additions are expected, though, and Traore is one player who has been linked with a move as Klopp potential looks to sign another winger.

Wolves may be willing to sell the 25-year-old, who was involved in Spain’s Euro 2020 campaign.

The Latest: Fresh update emerges

According to Football Insider, Liverpool have told Wolves they are happy to pay £25m for Traore, but a deal is ‘some way off’ because of a ‘difference in valuations’ between the Reds and their fellow Premier League club.

The Spaniard’s current deal expires in 2023, so Wolves are in no great rush to sell yet, with no risk of losing him on a free transfer.

The Verdict: Not worth the money

Traore can be an enormous handful on his day – he has been called a ‘fantastic talent’ by Premier League-winning captain Tim Sherwood – but unlike Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, he is not a consistent performer out wide.

Too often, his final ball is erratic and he struggles to guarantee relentless numbers, with just two goals and two assists coming his way in the league last season.

While £25m isn’t a huge amount, it could be spent more wisely on a more reliable winger who would be a dependable backup to Mane and Salah – such as Donyell Malen, who scored 19 goals in the Eredivisie in 2020/21 and is reportedly a target for Liverpool as well.

Ford on Simons

If former South African coach Graham Ford wishes his successor Eric Simons anything, it is mostly that his bowlers stay fit

Peter Robinson14-Jun-2002If former South African coach Graham Ford wishes his successor Eric Simons anything, it is mostly that his bowlers stay fit. "It helps if you’ve got a settled attack," reflected Ford this week. "It helps quite a lot."Ford, who is weighing up his future options as he negotiates a settlement with the United Cricket Board, is as well-placed as any to understand the pressures and demands that will now placed on the shoulders on the 40-year-old Simons as South Africa head into a summer that includes the 2003 World Cup."I’ve spoken to Eric about coaching quite a few times," said Ford this week. "We have similar views on a number of things. I think he’s a quality coach and I wish him everything of the best. But it will be important to him to stick to his principles and the methods that got him the job in the first place."He’s going to experience a lot of pressure from the outside, from ex-players, the media, the public and administrators as he steps up into the spotlight and the simple truth is that you can’t please all these different people."In a sense it’s a bit like the things you tell young players when they make the step up: you’ve got where you are now by doing things a certain way so don’t try and make yourself a different player. Stick to what you know and what works for you," said Ford.In one respect, Simons may a significant advantage over Ford. "The way I understand it from what I’ve read, Eric’s role has been much more clearly defined. He’ll play a significant role in planning strategy and he’ll be working with knowledgeable people. If he can get the right strategy and the selectors give him the players to implement this strategy, South Africa will have an excellent chance of winning the World Cup."Also in Simons’ favour, suggests Ford, will be the relationships he already has with the Western Province members of the national team."I know I was criticised at times for being `too friendly’ with the Natal players. I think it was unjustified. If you come out of a provincial set-up you have those relationships and you use them to build relationships with the other guys in the team. I can assure you, and it will be the same for Eric, that when you’re in the job, the last thing you think about is petty provincialism. You just want the team to win."Ford believes that notwithstanding the results against Australia during the past summer, South Africa have to be counted among the favourites to win the World Cup.""Look at our record at home. You have to go back to when Australia were last here, back in 1997, for a defeat at home. And over the past few years, we haven’t just been beating other countries, we’ve been hammering them."Apart from ourselves and Australia, I’ve always admired the way Sri Lanka play one-day cricket, but a lot will depend on how well the adjust to our conditions. Pakistan have the firepower to use the new bouncer rule in our conditions, but they’re always an enigma. They often seem divided among themselves and you don’t know how their problems at home, with tours being cancelled, will affect them. Maybe they’ll be a little short of cricket, maybe the problems will pull them together."New Zealand are very much a team and their success is always a team effort. They have a game plan and they stick to it, but I’m not sure they have the individual players capable of taking games away from teams like South Africa. India have fantastic batsmen and if they progress in the World Cup they’ll be fantastic to watch because it will mean their batters are firing, but I don’t know if they have the attack to win the World Cup in South African conditions."In a different way I don’t know that England could go all the way. They’re an improving team, but I don’t know about winning the World Cup."South Africa’s prospects, though, could depend on how well the attack functions."I think that’s where we fell short last season. If you look at how settled the Australian attack was compared to how many guys we used, there was quite a big difference. We had injury problems, of course. Someone like Mfuneko Ngam was not available while when we got to Australia guys like Allan Donald and Nantie Hayward had been troubled by injury and they, along with someone like Steve Elworthy, weren’t quite sure what roles they were expected to fill."We batted well enough a lot of times, but our bowling often couldn’t contain the Australians. If we can get the bowling settled and firing, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t win the World Cup."

Stumpy gets a personal invitation from Marcus for Wednesday

Somerset’s new friendly dragon mascot Stumpy spent a rare day outside of the county when he attended the Nat West One Day Final between England and India at Lord’s on Saturday

Richard Walsh15-Jul-2002Somerset’s new friendly dragon mascot Stumpy spent a rare day outside of the county when he attended the Nat West One Day Final between England and India at Lord’s on Saturday. It is unusual for Stumpy to stray far from his home in deepest darkest Somerset, but when a personal invitation was sent to him by England batting hero Marcus Trescothick, he just had to accept.Stumpy had to keep in the shadows at Lord’s for fear that the hot sun would upset him, but I am told he behaved impeccably and thoroughly enjoyed himself, and was introduced to many former players, including Alec Stewart’s father Mickey.Stumpy’s presence certainly brought good fortune to Marcus Trescothick who played a tremendous innings in the match, as a result of which the Somerset skipper has personally invited him to make a special guest appearance at the Cheltenham and Gloucester quarter final against Worcestershire at Taunton on Wednesday.Even Stumpy can’t say no to an invitation from England’s number one batsman, so lets all hope that he brings Marcus the same good fortune on Wednesday!
