Mitchell Marsh 177* powers Australia to seventh straight win

Bangladesh’s only solace is that they avoided damage to net run-rate and will likely qualify for Champions Trophy

Finch: Marsh and Smith’s form are good signs for Australia

Australia’s aversion to chasing has disappeared ahead of a semi-final with old foes South Africa after a statement innings of 177 not out from Mitchell Marsh at No.3 helped his side cruise to their second-successive record World Cup chase against Bangladesh in Pune, running down 307 with eight wickets and 32 balls to spare.Marsh made his highest ODI score and his first century at first drop, thumping 177 off 132 balls with 17 fours and nine sixes in brutal fashion.Australia had only chased more than 300 once in the last four years, but the rejigged batting line-up finally clicked with Steven Smith making an untroubled, unbeaten 63 at No.4 and sharing in a 175-run stand to guide Australia to their seventh straight win of the tournament. They made mincemeat of a toothless Bangladesh bowling attack that had fewer runs to defend than they should have after their batters butchered an outstanding platform to post just 306 for 8 on a pristine Pune batting strip.Towhid Hridoy had earlier made his highest World Cup score of 74, but six other Bangladesh batters passed 20 with none of them making more than 45. Adam Zampa again put on a masterclass of middle overs bowling to take his World Cup wicket tally to 22, the second most of any spinner in tournament history, while Marnus Labuschagne produced two outstanding run outs to continue to prove his worth to Australia’s team.Bangladesh’s only solace will come from the fact they avoided damage to their net run-rate and will likely qualify for the Champions Trophy barring the Netherlands upsetting India.Marsh’s second century of this World Cup was easily his most important. As good as his innings was when opening against Pakistan earlier in the tournament, his significantly inferior numbers at No.3 had left some questions about the balance of Australia’s top seven.Towhid Hridoy’s 74 went in vain•ICC via Getty Images

But the fall of Travis Head in the third over of the chase allowed Marsh seven overs of powerplay batting to get comfortable again, and he made the most of it. His ball striking was as imposing as ever, standing tall and holding his shape to thump drive after drive on the up through the cover region. Having been tied down by spin at different stages during the tournament, he showed no such fears against Bangladesh. Long-off and long-off fielders were merely spectators as he mishit balls 20 rows over their heads. He scarcely made a mistake. He barely played and missed. His only worry was having cramps late in the innings. But he powered through and kept his tempo up as he and Smith never gave Bangladesh a chance to open the door to Australia’s middle-order.Marsh formed another outstanding partnership with David Warner who made another composed contribution. Warner made 53 off 61 in a 120-run stand from just 17.2 overs and looked completely untroubled until he inexplicably chipped Mustafizur Rahman to mid-off. It could have been a moment of controversy as Bangladesh’s acting captain Najmul Hossain Shanto took the catch easily before losing control of the ball when he clipped his own leg as he went to throw it in the air. But Warner walked off without a qualm, bitterly disappointed at throwing away a possible third century in this World Cup.It brought Smith in at No.4, a position he has been shunted to begrudgingly to accommodate Head and Marsh above him. But any fears Australia’s hierarchy may have had about the Marsh-Smith No.3-4 dynamic were quickly erased as he found his trademark rhythm and flow at a venue he loves. Having played for the Pune franchise for three seasons in the IPL and scored a Test century here, he looked right at home as he turned the strike over consistently and found the boundary when he needed to. He even added some inventive lap sweeps to relieve pressure and backed himself to clear the rope when he was beaten in flight. It leaves Australia’s selectors with a quandary when Glenn Maxwell returns for the semi-final having been rested in this game following his cramp-riddled 201 not out against Afghanistan just four days earlier. That apart, Labuschagne’s contributions in the field were phenomenal to ensure Australia weren’t chasing more than 306. His two outstanding run outs stalled Bangladesh’s march as Australia’s bowlers lacked penetration. Mitchell Starc was rested and Josh Hazlewood only bowled seven overs, for just 21 runs, to keep him fresh for the semi-final.Mitchell Marsh scored his second World Cup hundred•Getty Images

Australia’s other four seamers, Pat Cummins, Sean Abbott, Marcus Stoinis and Marsh bowled 33 overs for 210 runs and only picked up three wickets.Bangladesh’s top order, led initially by Litton Das, Tanzid Hasan and Shanto dominated the seamers with some sublime timing and brave footwork. Tanzid and Shanto skipped down the track and flat-batted length balls down the ground. Litton pierced gaps with pure class. But they all butchered starts. The worst of which was Shanto who looked set on 45 when he took on Labuschagne for two and was run out by a mile.Hridoy, who played impressively to make his first World Cup half-century, then called for a suicide single to Labuschagne at cover. He swooped like one of his childhood heroes Jonty Rhodes, diving, gathering and underarming in one motion to hit direct from close range and run out a helpless Mahmudullah just as he was starting to roll on 32.Zampa was able to take control through the middle overs. He had already forced Litton to hole out needlessly to long-on for 36 after scoring just five singles from the first eight balls he faced off the legspinner. Zampa later tied Mushfiqur Rahim in knots before forcing a miscue to midwicket.Sean Abbott, who had replaced Starc for his first appearance of the World Cup, then bowled superbly at the death delivering slower ball bouncers with precision to concede just four runs off the bat in overs 48 and 50 and finish with figures of 2 for 61 from 10.Australia’s only concern with the ball was Marsh and Stoinis’ contribution of 1 for 91 from nine overs between them. But Marsh’s magnificent century more than made up for it, and Maxwell’s return means their overs may not be required in the knock-out games.

Super-subs to make an appearance at ILT20 2024

The league will also feature in-match penalties in its second season

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Dec-2023

The ILT20 has been granted List A T20 status by the ICC•ILT20

The second season of the ILT20 will feature a Super-sub, whose role will mirror that of the Impact Player, used in the IPL in 2023. In the updated playing conditions shared with the six franchises ahead of the second edition, to be played across the UAE from January 19, the league management explained that the Super-sub can be picked from a set of seven names that teams will offer in addition to the playing XI immediately after the toss.Just like in the case of an Impact Player, the replaced player cannot take any further part in the match. While not mandatory, teams can introduce the Super-sub at any point after the first over the match, or even at the start of the second innings. The one key condition set by the ILT20, though, is that a minimum of two UAE players must be part of the playing XI at all times. In its inaugural edition earlier this year, the ILT20 allowed a maximum of nine overseas players in a playing XI along with a minimum of two UAE players. So, if the Super-sub is a UAE player, he can replace a fellow local or an overseas player. In the updated playing conditions, teams will need to submit squads of 18, which will include at least four UAE players along with two Associate overseas players, on the eve of the match. The batting team can bring out a Super-sub at the completion of an over, at the fall of a wicket, or in case a batter retires (injured or voluntarily). In case a Super-sub replaces a retired batter, it will be logged as a wicket. The bowling team can also get the Super-sub at the fall of a wicket, but the player will not be allowed to complete an unfinished over. A Super-sub, though, can bowl his full quota of overs regardless of the number of overs delivered by the player replaced.In-match penalty for slow-over rateJust as the ICC and other major T20 leagues have introduced in-match fielding penalties, the ILT20 has also updated the rules to penalise slow-over rate offences. In case the bowling team is an over behind the cut-off time, then only four fielders will be permitted outside the 30-yard circle; for two overs behind, only three fielders can stand outside the 30-yard circle; for three overs behind, a financial penalty of 5% of match fee per over will be applicable in addition to allowing three fielders in the outfield. The ILT20 received a major boost recently when it became the first franchise T20 league run by an Associate country to be given List A T20 status by the ICC, from the second season itself. Consequently, the tournament statistics will be recorded officially as T20 records.

Netherlands captain Scott Edwards called up by Melbourne Renegades

Wicketkeeper-batter, who also holds Australian citizenship, will replace Quinton de Kock for Renegades’ final two BBL games

Melbourne Renegades have sent an SOS to Netherlands captain Scott Edwards to be available for the last two games of the BBL season as a replacement for the injured Joe Clarke.Edwards is currently in South Africa with the Netherlands team on a training tour that includes five practice matches against SA20 teams before the start of that tournament and a month-long camp. But Edwards, who also holds Australian citizenship, is leaving South Africa early to return to Melbourne, where he grew up, to be available for Renegades’ final two BBL matches, as they will be without a specialist wicketkeeper-batter after Quinton de Kock departs for the SA20 following the match against Hobart Hurricanes on Thursday.Related

Mujeeb's BBL season cut short by Afghanistan Cricket Board

Renegades don’t have a local wicketkeeper on their list, having traded Sam Harper to Melbourne Stars for legspinner Adam Zampa. They had recruited de Kock to keep in the six games he was available for, and were relying on Clarke to fill the role for the remaining matches. But Clarke’s season-ending quad injury threw a spanner in the works.Englishman Jordan Cox was recruited as a replacement player for de Kock, and has played two matches for Renegades already as a specialist batter – one before de Kock’s arrival, and the other as Clarke’s replacement in the Melbourne derby on Tuesday. Cox has played as a wicketkeeper in 24 of his 88 T20s at professional level, but has not kept in his last 26 matches dating back to January last year.Edwards, 27, qualifies as an Australian local, and had played in Renegades’ practice matches before the BBL. But the Netherlands ODI and T20I captain, who had a very impressive ODI World Cup in India with both bat and gloves, was not signed by any of the BBL teams despite being fully available for the tournament, even as Stars only carried one specialist wicketkeeper in their 18-man squad.Edwards instead spent December playing club cricket in Melbourne before heading to South Africa with the Netherlands team. But he will return to Melbourne on January 11, and will be available for the second Melbourne derby against Stars at the Marvel Stadium on January 13 and for their final match of the home-and-away season against Sydney Thunder on January 17 if required.Edwards has never played in the BBL or been contracted despite winning the Ryder Medal as the best player in Victoria’s Premier Cricket competition in 2021. He has also never been contracted to play domestically in Australia despite being eligible as a local, although he has played second XI cricket for Victoria in Cricket Australia’s second-tier four-day competition that sits underneath Sheffield Shield cricket.Renegades replace Mujeeb with HoseinRenegades have also added West Indies left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein for the last two games of the season after Mujeeb Ur Rahman was ruled out of the remainder of the BBL following the Afghanistan Cricket Board’s decision to revoke his No-Objection Certificate. It continues a tumultuous season for Renegades, with their captain Nic Maddinson dropping himself mid-season due to being out of form, while long-time captain and all-time leading run-scorer Aaron Finch was also left out of their most recent match despite being fit, and has announced he will retire at the end of the season despite having a year to run on his contract.

South Africa gear up for Australia's spin in Perth's searing heat

The visitors, however, are still expecting some assistance for the seam bowlers

As they front up to the daunting challenge of playing Australia in a Test match for the first time, South Africa will step onto an iconic WACA ground famously known for fiery pace bowlingBut spin is expected to play a major factor with South Africa preparing to face an Australian team likely to feature three frontline spinners. Ashleigh Gardner and legspinner Alana King, who relishes the bounce of her home ground, are locks with recalled Sophie Molineux set to battle Jess Jonassen for the third spot.Experienced seamer Megan Schutt has been included in the squad, but a return to Test cricket appears unlikely with a dry surface expected amid searing heat through the match.Related

Molineux recalled to Australia Test squad, Schutt remains in contention

Perth, Australia’s sunniest city, has been in the grips of a heatwave with 42 degrees celsius forecast on day one. Domestic matches at the WACA this season have been mostly bowler-dominated with sharp turn and bounce evident. In last week’s Sheffield Shield match between Western Australia and New South Wales, spinners Chris Green and Corey Rocchiccioli combined for 16 wickets. There is the added layer of uncertainty over the surface that will be used for the Test match. Smack back in the middle of the ground, the pitch has not been used this season due to the growth of the grass being affected by Australian rules football – which is played at the WACA during the winter months. All those factors mean South Africa have used some of their limited preparation – with no time available for a practice match – to devise ways to curb Australia’s spinners.”We did discuss that there should be a bit of turn,” allrounder Nadine de Klerk told reporters in Perth. “I do actually think our team is a side that plays spin quite well. We’ve adapted quite well the last couple of years. We’ve played a lot of subcontinent teams, so I think we do play spin well and hopefully we can use that to our advantage.”Armed with impressive young seamers, including de Klerk who bowled well in the T20I and ODI series, South Africa are still expecting pace to have an impact during this contest as they play just their second Test match in a decade.”The WACA is known for being quite quick and bouncy,” de Klerk said. “I think that’s what we’re going to expect. I assume there will be some seam movement.”It’s going to be a great challenge for us. Obviously, it’s unknown territory for us. We haven’t had a lot of it [Test cricket], but we’re looking forward to going against them and it’s gonna be a great challenge for us as a side.”Australia are well stocked with seam and spin options as they look to clinch the mult-series outright after taking an 8-4 lead following the white-ball matches.”It’s going to be pretty hot…bit unsure what it [the pitch] will do on day one, but I think we’ve got the bowling attack to take 20 wickets,” Australia batter Beth Mooney said.”We’ve got great spinners in our line-up and great options. Traditionally this year it’s [the WACA] been a tough wicket to bat on.”Having starred at No. 4 in the shorter formats, Mooney is set to return to the top of the order alongside Phoebe Litchfield.”Really excited about the challenge and working through a pretty interesting wicket,” she said. “I feel like if my game is in order come Thursday, then hopefully I can contribute to success.”
