Mitchell Starc could be in doubt for India tour after injuring finger

Cameron Green will also miss the Sydney Test against South Africa because of a broken finger

Mitchell Starc admits he could be touch and go for the early part of the four-Test tour of India starting in February, while Pat Cummins has declared injured allrounder Cameron Green as close to irreplaceable as Australia are hit with a rare injury crisis as they try to qualify for the World Test Championship final.Australia wrapped up their three-Test series win against South Africa 2-0 with a match to play thanks to a thumping innings victory at the MCG but it came at a major cost. Starc and Green have both been ruled out of the third Test in Sydney with finger injuries.Green flew home to Perth on Thursday while the game was still going to recover from a broken index finger and there has been no timeframe put on his recovery, although he is expected to be fit for the India tour. The same can’t be said for Starc who has a detached tendon in the top of his middle finger on his bowling hand, which occurred when he attempted to take a catch on the first day of the game.Related

Starc on de Bruyn's backing up: 'Absolutely taking the mickey'

Starc was able to bat and bowl in the remainder of the game but admits he does not know what his recovery timeframe looks like as he needs to consult a specialist in Sydney.”I’m getting another scan in Sydney and seeing a finger specialist to work through all that,” Starc said after Australia wrapped up victory in Melbourne inside four days.”Obviously India is coming up, so we’ll see what the timeframes are after I’ve had those discussions next week. Hopefully [my return] fits in somewhere at the front end of the tour.”Apart from the finger being out of action, I can still train to some degree and bowl in creative ways to keep up my workloads up whilst the finger not being impacted. So that side of it is going to be fine. It’s just where the timeframe of the tendon comes into it for the India tour.”From the scans the other day the tendon’s basically gone from the top of the finger so I can’t straighten it.”Mitchell Starc bowled through the pain•Getty Images

Australia likely to name Sydney squad on Friday
Australia’s first Test against India starts on February 9 in Nagpur. Starc has not missed a Test match since the 2019 Ashes and was a key part of Australia’s last two subcontinent tours when Australia played only two specialist quicks in four of the five Test matches in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with Green as the allrounder.India aside, Cummins’ immediate concern is replacing both Starc and Green for the third Test against South Africa in Sydney.”The first thing is to probably have a look at the wicket up there,” Cummins said post the MCG win. “From afar it looks a little bit dry this year. I’m sure we’ll add an extra spinner to the mix. Greeny is pretty close to being irreplaceable I think as a top order batter that gives you another bowling option. We’ll chat through all those combinations when we get a bit closer but we’re not settled on anything.”Cummins confirmed that he and Australia’s selectors would discuss the squad on Thursday night and announce it Friday. Australia coach Andrew McDonald confirmed on SEN on Wednesday morning that Australia would likely pick a spinner who complements Nathan Lyon rather than a second offspinner like Victoria’s Todd Murphy.Queensland legspinner Mitchell Swepson partnered Lyon in four Tests in Pakistan and Sri Lanka but appears to have fallen out of favour. Ashton Agar is looking like the possible second option with Australia keen to have a left-arm finger spinner in the side for India following the success of Steve O’Keefe in 2017, and the success of India’s duo, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, more broadly.Agar played his first two first-class games in 18 months just recently for the Prime Minister’s XI and Western Australia, returning figures of 3 for 212 from 78.4 overs while battling to readjust to red-ball bowling after so much limited-overs cricket.Australia’s other white-ball spinner Adam Zampa has also thrown his hand up to play Test cricket after playing his first first-class game in three years in November, taking 3 for 57 and 0 for 49 for New South Wales against Victoria, but seems an unlikely candidate for Sydney.Cameron Green is expected to be fit before Australia’s tour of India•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

Cummins admitted Australia could look to trial some players for India in the Sydney Test but acknowledged that they still need to win to shore up their place in the World Test Championship final.”I think it’s a mix,” Cummins said, “It’s probably going to be the wicket in Australia that closest resembles India, even if it doesn’t spin big. So it might give us a chance to have a look at one or two players that will be on that Indian tour ahead of that. But the first priority is of course to win the Test match.”Lance Morris could be Starc’s replacement
There was no indication of who would replace Starc but McDonald had mentioned on SEN on Wednesday that West Australian quick Lance Morris could be Starc’s replacement given his raw pace and striking ability.”He may be looking like he’ll get an opportunity in Sydney depending on the balance of that attack,” McDonald said.Josh Hazlewood has declared he is fit after ruling himself out of the Boxing Day Test. But Australia won’t have any workload issues to worry about with either Cummins or Scott Boland after Starc braved the pain at the MCG to deliver 18 overs and take the wicket of Sarel Erwee.”Some painkillers helped,” Starc said. “I think it’s probably just taking a little bit of the pressure off my middle finger onto the ball, which I think actually helped my seam position. So I might see if they want to leave it detached for a bit longer because it’s helping the swing.”It was just to hopefully play a role and be able to not leave them a bowler down. I’m sure they would have been able to do it, but it would have been a big ask for just Scotty, Pat and Nath [Lyon] to bowl [on their own]. I think Pat came over three balls into that first over of the second innings and said this is going better than we thought and I certainly was of the same opinion. It was just nice to be able to play a role and contribute in that second innings.”

Liverpool now open talks over move to sign £66m "monster" Nunez replacement

Liverpool have now opened talks over a move to sign a “monster” £66m striker, who could be brought in to replace the unsettled Darwin Nunez this summer, according to a report.

Slot looking to strengthen as Nunez set to be sold

Arne Slot is interested in signing a new left-back this summer, with the manager recently making it clear he wants the club to sell Kostas Tsimikas and bring in AFC Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, but the Hungarian will not come cheap.

The Cherries are looking to receive a fee of £50m for the defender, given his impressive performances this season, while Italian giants AC Milan could also be set to provide competition for his signature.

There have been some calls for Slot to replace long-serving first-choice left-back Andy Robertson, with former Red Jermaine Pennant telling Football FanCast he believes Antonee Robinson or Rayan Ait-Nouri could be suitable heirs.

A new midfielder may also be of interest, after missing out on Martin Zubimendi last summer, and there could be an opportunity to sign Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich for free upon the expiration of his contract.

However, alongside left-back, striker has been more of a problem position for Slot this season, and there is a feeling Darwin Nunez will be sold in the summer, which means a replacement will be necessary.

According to a report from The Boot Room, Liverpool have now opened talks to sign RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, who is attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskoscores their first goal from the penalty spot

Manchester United, Newcastle United and Aston Villa are also battling to sign the forward, who has a release clause of £58m, although reports from elsewhere have stated it could rise to as much as £66m.

WIth Nunez said to be open to an Anfield exit in the summer, the Reds are being proactive in the transfer market and assessing new strikers, and Sesko is believed to be among Slot’s top targets.

"Monster" Sesko could easily eclipse Nunez

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson has dubbed the Slovenian striker a “monster”, while also claiming his ceiling is “high”, and he has started to fulfill his potential in the Bundesliga this season.

The Leipzig star has a solid record of 17 goals in 34 matches in all competitions, while also showcasing his ability to set up his teammates by weighing in with five assists.

Nunez, on the other hand, has had some good moments this season, bagging a brace to secure a late win against Brentford back in January, but top-level performances have been few and far between, with the Uruguayan scoring just four league goals.

As previously mentioned, the 25-year-old is open to a move this summer, and Liverpool shouldn’t stand in his way, considering Sesko is showing signs he could be a real upgrade, and cashing in on Nunez could be a huge help in funding the move.

Chennai Super Kings left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary has been sidelined from the entire IPL 2023 with a stress fracture of the back. Nagaland left-arm seamer Akash Singh, who has played for Rajasthan Royals in the past, has been signed as a like-for-like replacement.Choudhary’s injury is the latest blow to the Super Kings attack that is already without New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson, who has also been ruled out of the entire season with a back injury. Super Kings will also be without the Sri Lankan pair of Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana, who will link up with the franchise only after the end of Sri Lanka’s six-match white-ball series in New Zealand on April 8.Choudhary was one of the finds of the last IPL season, emerging as the team’s joint-highest wicket-taker, with 16 strikes in 13 games at an economy rate of 9.31. Eleven of those wickets came in the powerplay, the joint-most by any bowler during this phase in the tournament.Related

Akash, who was unsold at the auction, will join Super Kings at his base price of INR 20 lakh. In all, he has played nine T20s so far, picking up seven wickets at an economy rate of 7.87. He made his T20 debut for Rajasthan in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2019 before helping India Under-19s to a runners-up finish in the 2020 World Cup in South Africa.

FIM DO JEJUM
O jogo começou com a balança pesando para o Athletico, que ameaçava mais no ataque. Não demorou muito para o Botafogo equilibrar as ações, que chegava forte no campo ofensivo principalmente no ritmo de Lucas Fernandes.

O time se organizou e passou a pressionar o Furacão.

Top-two finish not out of Super Giants' reach as they face KKR at Eden Gardens

KKR are not out of the playoffs’ race yet, but theirs is a slim chance, made worse by their poor net run-rate

Manjrekar: LSG could persist with Hooda at the top for one more game

Big picture: LSG close to playoffs spotPlaced third currently with 15 points, Lucknow Super Giants’ road to the playoffs is a straightforward one: win against Kolkata Knight Riders and sail through. And if Chennai Super Kings lose to Delhi Capitals, LSG could even secure a top-two finish. But if they lose, they will require at least one of Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore to lose.LSG are playing away from home but they are coming off back-to-back wins after just one victory in the four completed matches before that. Marcus Stoinis led the way with match-defining performances in both those wins, while there were handy contributions from stand-in captain Krunal Pandya and legspinner Ravi Bishnoi, too.As for KKR, there’s only a small chance that they can squeeze into the playoffs. Their negative net run-rate – made worse by the thumpings from Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings at home – makes things even more complicated for them. They not only need a huge win but also a number of other results to go their way.Their win over CSK in the reverse fixture in Chennai was a rare occasion of them clicking with both bat and ball in the same game. They will hope for an encore, and then pray.Form guideKolkata Knight Riders WLWWL

Stats that matter Andre Russell hasn’t had a good season so far, and it could get worse for him. Russell has managed only 59 runs from 52 balls – a strike rate of 113 – against spin this season, while being dismissed four times. Also, the spinners’ economy rate of 8.45 at Eden Gardens is a lot better than the 9.81 pace bowlers have. Add to that the prospect of three out of Krunal, Bishnoi, Mishra and Swapnil Singh in the LSG side on Saturday evening, and Russell could be in trouble. Among all batters who have faced at least 35 balls during the last four overs this season, Stoinis’ strike rate of 214.28 is the second best. And with the same filter, Rinku Singh’s 16 sixes during that phase are three more than the second-placed Tim David and Shimron Hetmyer. The short boundaries at Eden Gardens mean it has the second-highest run rate (11.19) from overs 17-20 of all grounds that have hosted at least three games this season. However, KKR and LSG’s scoring rate in this phase has been low: 9.61 each. KKR’s pace bowlers have an average of 41.34 and an economy of 10.27 this IPL. Both figures are comfortably the poorest among pacers from any team.Pitch and conditionsIt rained in Kolkata in the build-up to the match, and intermittent showers are expected during the game too. Eden Gardens has proved to be a high-scoring venue, with 200 being breached four times in six games.Quotes”Home advantage is not a question of pitches. It is about winning games. We should have won the games we played [at Eden Gardens]. Pitches have changed; nobody can give a guarantee on them.”

West Ham now make contact to sign versatile £25m defender ahead of Man Utd

West Ham United are looking to pip Manchester United to the signing of a £25m defender after making an approach.

The Irons haven’t had the season they would have been hoping for after splashing the cash in the summer under Julen Lopetegui. The Spaniard was dismissed at the beginning of 2025, with Graham Potter the new man in charge at the London Stadium.

As a result, attention behind the scenes is seemingly turning towards the summer transfer window ahead of Potter’s first full season in charge.

West Ham eyeing move for £42m "king of kings" with 19 goals this season

The Hammers have set their sights on a forward who has been prolific in front of goal this season.

ByDominic Lund Mar 10, 2025

A number of players have been linked with moves to West Ham in recent weeks and a marquee forward signing appears to be high on the to-do list after Evan Ferguson’s loan spell from Brighton comes to an end.

Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike is once again a target for West Ham, whereas preliminary contact has been made over a deal to sign Tammy Abraham.

As well as attacking additions, new signings at the back could also be needed, and a new name has now emerged on the Irons’ transfer radar.

West Ham make contact to sign £25m defender

According to reports in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, West Ham have made an approach over a move to sign Genoa defender Koni de Winter.

The Hammers have ‘asked for information’ over a deal to sign the Belgium international, as have top-flight rivals Man Utd and Tottenham Hotspur.

Koni De Winter for Genoa.

Genoa have reportedly set a €30m (£25m) asking price as they look to make a profit on De Winter, who they only signed permanently from Juventus last year.

Serie A sides Napoli and Roma are also keen on the 22-year-old, who can play as a centre-back, right-back or defensive midfielder. De Winter came through the academy at Juventus and has been called “gifted” by U23 scout Antonio Mango in the past.

A move to West Ham could therefore be one to watch for De Winter, who may end up rivalling the likes of Max Kilman, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Jean-Clair Todibo, should he make his loan deal permanent under Potter.

Farke can repeat Hernandez trick by axing Aaronson for "special" Leeds star

Spanish star Pablo Hernandez remains a fan-favourite at Leeds United and understandably so given the impact he had during his time as a player at Elland Road.

He originally joined the Whites on loan for the first half of the 2016/17 season from Swansea City before subsequently joining permanently that January – a move that would set the club up for success.

The now-retired Hernandez would make over 150 appearances for the Whites, cementing his place as a regular at the heart of the side – registering over 10 combined goals and assists every year he spent in Yorkshire, including the promotion-winning season in 2019/20.

The former Valencia ace would depart in the summer of 2021 on a free transfer, ending his four-year spell with the Whites, with very few players able to replicate his success in recent years.

One player, in particular, has struggled, with current boss Daniel Farke needing to take desperate action when the transfer window opens in a couple of months time.

Brenden Aaronson’s stats for Leeds in 2024/25

After joining for £25m in the summer of 2022, huge expectations were put on the shoulders of Brenden Aaronson to be a star for Leeds, but ultimately, nearly three years on he’s failed to live up to the hype.

The American international featured 42 times during the club’s most recent Premier League campaign, before leaving on loan to join Union Berlin for the 2023/24 season.

However, he’s since returned to the Whites, looking to play a crucial role in Farke’s ambitions of securing Championship promotion come the end of May.

Whilst he’s notched eight goals and two assists, only one of which has come since the start of January, often being anonymous in key matches and failing to deliver the goods.

Given his recent decline in form, it’s unclear whether the 24-year-old has the tools to succeed in the Premier League, with Farke needing to axe him from his side and repeat a deal for Hernandez this summer.

How Farke can repeat Hernandez success with Leeds this summer

Leeds boss Farke has done a superb job in managing the first-team since his appointment in the summer of 2023, helping the club sit in top spot with just eight games to go.

The German has achieved a 57% win record since taking the reins, doing an excellent job in picking the club up after dropping into the second tier ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

He’s made shrewd additions during his time in charge, including that of midfielder Joe Rothwell, who arrived on loan from top-flight outfit Bournemouth last summer.

The 30-year-old had to bide his time before making an impact in Yorkshire, often having to settle for minutes off the bench to make an impression.

However, in recent months, the former Blackburn Rovers star has cemented his place at the heart of the side, partnering Ao Tanaka at the base of the midfield.

Arguably, Rothwell, who’s previously been dubbed “special” by Tony Dorigo, produced his best showing against Sunderland, producing two assists and helping the side turn around a one-goal deficit.

On the face of it, a Hernandez repeat may appear to be a bit of a stretch, but the Englishman has followed in the Spaniard’s footsteps by originally moving on loan to Elland Road and impressing in the process.

If the club are to repeat a deal for the fan-favourite, they must look to pursue a deal on a permanent basis, offering a quality squad option, whether that be in the top flight or the second tier.

His current deal at the Vitality expires in the summer of 2026, potentially allowing the Whites to secure a cut-price transfer with the star entering his final year of his contract.

Rothwell has showcased his talents with the added minutes provided by Farke, with the German desperately needing to get a deal done to allow the midfielder to continue on his upward trajectory.
