Let’s take it back to August – when Liverpool held off a spirited Ipswich Town side to claim a 2-0 victory on the road and start the Arne Slot era on strong footing.

Liverpool oozed quality and slickness after the interval but were stodgy and incoherent over the first 45. For Anfield’s new tactical warden, the jury was still out.

But Liverpool have thrived, confidently in pole position to win the Premier League for the first time since 2019/20 (Jurgen Klopp’s lone triumph), having also reached the last 16 of the Champions League and the Carabao Cup final, set for mid-March against dangerous Newcastle United.

That first victory against Ipswich said a lot about how Liverpool would shape up under their new coach, but it failed to portend the incredible efforts that have cushioned the fallout from Klopp’s shock step-down.

The likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have been at the top of their games, fronting the charge, but Slot has also triumphed in taking the less-prominent (but still important) members of the team and pushing them toward greener pastures.

Cody Gakpo is among the biggest winners in that regard, recently awarded Liverpool’s Player of the Month award for January.

Last season, Gakpo played an important role for Klopp’s Liverpool, filling in across numerous roles to combat the injury issues that ultimately unravelled the multi-front charge toward the end of the campaign.

This was a blessing and a curse for a forward who was unable to craft a run of true consistency in his best role. Under Slot, there have been no such problems, with Gakpo invariably deployed off the left flank.

With 16 goals and five assists from 35 matches, the 25-year-old has matched last year’s tally having played roughly 1,000 fewer minutes across all competitions. Correspondent David Lynch summed it up nicely: “He has been reinvigorated by Arne Slot simplifying his role.”

Gakpo draws on the power of Anfield’s roaring crowd to produce his finest results, scoring in seven successive home games, but he’s proved to be a title-winning force for a Liverpool side that has been overly reliant on Mohamed Salah at times in recent years.

Having claimed four goals and an assist in January, the £120k-per-week ace was awarded the Player of the Month award as a result.

The nature of the Netherlands star’s role means that he takes the limelight more than others, but he’s not the only late Klopp signing to have gone from strength to strength this season.

Slot's influence on Liverpool's midfield

Slot was always going to need a high-octane and technical engine to charge his team. It was frustrating at the time, but it’s perhaps a testament both to Klopp’s vision and Slot’s wherewithal that he made do with the pieces at his disposal – botched bid for Martin Zubimendi notwithstanding.

Alexis Mac Allister is an industrious and dynamic part of the team once again, having thrived for most of his debut campaign. Ryan Gravenberch is bound to collect the ‘most improved’ trophy at Liverpool’s end-of-season award ceremony, but he’s reaping the plaudits for his efforts.

Only two weeks ago, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher revealed that he’s still not convinced by Dominik Szoboszlai, who Klopp signed from RB Leipzig last summer for £60m to begin a much-needed rebuild.

Szoboszlai started the 2023/24 campaign with such vim that he drew comparisons to Steven Gerrard for his all-action presence in and around the centre circle.

However, he petered out as the year dragged on, but has seemingly found his feet under new management, excelling as the unsung hero in a multi-title-chasing team.

Klopp ran out of patience with the ebb and flow of Szoboszlai’s levels last term and restricted him to a bit-part role over the closing months of the 2023/24 term, with the midfielder starting only one of the final six top-flight matches after previously being hooked at half-time as Liverpool lost at home to Crystal Palace.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom. He showed many fine qualities. Reporter Bence Bocsak even hailed him for his suitability in the Merseyside outfit. “He is a pressing machine. Perfect for Klopp.”

Well, it’s starting to seem like Slot’s football is actually where it’s at for the Hungary captain. Szoboszlai plays with unbridled enthusiasm, blending his energy and technical qualities to a resounding effect. You can see below that his ball-playing metrics in particular have been straightened out this season.

In the Premier League this season, Szoboszlai’s subtle shift into a more controlled role – with retained energy levels – is indeed emblematic of the changes enforced by Slot.

Effectively, the 24-year-old has been calmed down, structured into a more disciplined No. 10 role, less raging bull, more athletic and artful matador.

He lopes and drives, chasing down lost causes and showcasing his clever movements by picking at the right opponent, thus creating space for his fellow forwards in red.

Oh, he’s got his detractors, sure, but Szoboszlai is one of the business, with Transfermarkt currently marking his transfer value at £63m, meaning that he’s currently worth more than the fast-improving Gakpo (£50m) and indeed Salah – who is worth £46m when not considering his contract situation.

This goes to show that he’s a top-class midfielder with plenty still to give. You could argue that at 24, his prime years are very much in front of him, and that market value could continue to mushroom up.

Slot-ball has restored Liverpool’s belief that they can conquer football’s biggest prizes. The new system’s in full swing, so polished that you can hear it squeak.

Szoboszlai might not be the most clinical attacking midfielder in the business, but he’s indispensable, the facilitator who provides forwards such as Gakpo and Salah with the space and support to shoot, and to score, and to claim win after win after win.

– Temos um plano de longo prazo para ver a base e até mesmo alguns dos elementos do estádio no mesmo lugar. Isso é um plano de três anos. Estamos vendo um local para comprar para isso, e é bom que tem vários lugares para isso e ainda com transporte público por perto. A curto prazo, é surpreendente quando você compra um grande clube e espera boas instalações, mas, para nós, ainda temos times muito separados, não é ideal. Guiu and Jackson’s absences means that Christopher Nkunku is Maresca’s only real striking option right now, dealing Chelsea a real obstacle to overcome in their chase for Champions League qualification.

As per reliable journalist Ben Jacobs, writing for GiveMeSport, Chelsea decided not to pursue a move for the 26-year-old in January 2024.

However, Chelsea are now giving fresh consideration over signing Gyokeres, with the Blues seemingly performing a U-turn over their previous stance. This is also fuelled by the notion that Sporting could now sell for around £58 million, which is a £25 million drop from his actual £83 million release clause.

Given the former Coventry City star’s exceptional record in front of goal, this could prove to be a bargain, but agents fees and wages could still make it a fairly costly operation.

“He joined Coventry on loan and then signed for them permanently. All the lads have said when he came back in the summer after signing permanently, he was a different animal,” said former teammate Jake Bidwell.

“With the way he plays as well, with his aggression, the two (qualities) go hand in hand with how well he has done. He all of a sudden realised how quick and strong he was and had the confidence to use it and mixed with the aggression, it’s made him pretty unstoppable.”

وواصل: “لا أريد لبيراميدز أن يلعب بطريقة دفاعية أمام صن داونز، خصوصًا أن الفريق كان متفوقًا في ملعب صن داونز، وضغط عليهم وكان بإمكانه تسجيل المزيد من الأهداف، التفوق كان واضحًا في كل الجوانب، حتى من الناحية البدنية يجب استغلال وجود الجمهور، ومن الممكن أن يحسم بيراميدز اللقاء في الشوط الأول ورأيي أن بيراميدز يجب أن يضغط من الأمام، وقادر على إنهاء المباراة في الشوط الأول”.

واستكمل: “إذا تحدثنا عن مواجهة الأهلي، فالفرق الإفريقية تتأثر بالجماهير، ولو أن الأهلي ضغط عليهم بشكل كافٍ لكان تأهل، لكنه تراجع، وهذا ما حدث وسط جماهيره، والدفاع كان خطأ كبيرًا وبنسبة كبيرة، سيسجل بيراميدز هدفًا، وإذا كرر نفس أسلوب اللعب والضغط الأمامي، قد يسجل أكثر من هدف”.

وأضاف: “مصطفى فتحي على اليمين، وإبراهيم عادل في الجهة اليسرى، ومايلي يمثل قوة هجومية كبيرة، خاصة أن الأخير مهاجم رائع، سريع، وقوي في الالتحامات، ويُحسن استغلال المساحات، هذا الثلاثي، في ظل الضغط الأمامي، قادر على حسم اللقب ومدرب بيراميدز تصرّف بشكل صحيح في مواجهة سيراميكا كليوباترا، حيث منح اللاعبين راحة استعدادًا لنهائي دوري أبطال إفريقيا، وتعامل بشكل جيد مع المباراة بالمقابل، كانت من أسوأ مباريات سيراميكا كليوباترا، وكذلك من أسوأ مباريات علي ماهر، الذي يُعد مدربًا كبيرًا”.

وواصل: “وزارة الشباب قادرة على تجميع جمهور كبير لمساندة بيراميدز في المباراة، فرغم تفوق بيراميدز من ناحية اللاعبين، يبقى الجمهور عنصرًا مهمًا، والفريق بحاجة إليه”.

وردا على سؤال هل أخذ بيراميدز مكان الزمالك؟ قال: “مشاكل الزمالك ساعدت بيراميدز على التقدم، ونحن نراه اليوم في نهائي دوري أبطال إفريقيا والمركز الثاني في الدوري، هناك تعاطف واضح من جماهير الزمالك مع بيراميدز”.

واسترسل: “مدرب صن داونز يتميز بامتلاك فريق يجيد الاستحواذ، خاصة في المباريات خارج ملعبه، ويملك حلولًا هجومية مميزة، ويُعد موكوينا وسلاح التسديدات من أبرز عناصره والفريق يؤدي بشكل قوي خارج أرضه، والأهلي كان مثالًا على ذلك”.

ويلعب الأهلي في المجموعة الأولي لـ كأس العالم للأندية، بجانب أندية إنتر ميامي وبالميراس البرازيلي وبورتو البرتغالي.

وسيلتقي الأهلي مع إنتر ميامي في الثالثة فجرًا صباح يوم 15 يونيو الجاري، في الجولة الأولي من مواجهات المجموعة الأولي لـ كأس العالم للأندية 2025. 

وقال هاني خلال تصريحات عبر الموقع الرسمي للأهلي: “الجميع يدرك أهمية المباراة، الفريق يدخل البطولة بروح جديدة بعد حسم بطولة الدوري المحلي، أغلقنا صفحة الدوري بعد مجهود كبير في المباريات الست الأخيرة، وبدأنا التركيز على كأس العالم للأندية”.

وتطرق هاني إلى الحديث عن المدير الفني الجديد للفريق، البرتغالي خوسيه ريبيرو، قائلًا: “تغيير الأجهزة الفنية هو أمر يخص إدارة النادي، ونحن كلاعبين نتحمل مسؤوليتنا في العمل مع أي مدير فني، ونسعى دائمًا للتكيف مع أفكاره وطريقته التكتيكية بأقصى سرعة، المنظومة في الأهلي دائمًا هدفها النجاح، والتفاهم بين اللاعبين والجهاز الفني عنصر أساسي لتحقيق ذلك”.

وأردف: “أعتز كثيرًا بثقة جماهير الأهلي بي، سواء داخل الملعب أو في مواقف مختلفة مثل تجديد التعاقد، أحاول دائمًا أن أكون على قدر المسئولية، وأترك صورة طيبة تعبر عن لاعب تربى داخل جدران هذا الكيان الكبير”.

واختتم: “شكرًا من القلب على دعمكم لنا طوال الفترة الماضية، وثقتكم في قدرتنا على الفوز بالدوري رغم أن البطولة كانت تبدو بعيدة، دعمكم هو سر تفوقنا، وأتمنى أن تواصلوا المساندة في كأس العالم للأندية، نحن نعدكم أن نقدم أقصى ما لدينا، ونسعى لأن تظلوا فخورين بكونكم أهلاوية، وبالفريق الذي يمثل هذا الكيان العظيم أمام العالم”.

Anything that could go wrong has gone wrong for Manchester City this season. After four Premier League titles in a row, the champions have finally suffered from their push for such success and been hit with injury after injury. Rodri’s season-ending injury was enough to send Guardiola’s side in the wrong direction, but far more than just the Spaniard have been sidelined throughout the current campaign.

Just when those at the Etihad thought they’d restored some stability in the first leg of their eventual Champions League defeat against Real Madrid, their medical team once again received what has become an all too familiar call. Down went Jack Grealish and down went Akanji followed by City’s Champions League hopes altogether, with the latter requiring surgery.

Only compiling their misery, Madrid then took a 3-2 lead to the Bernabeu where they romped to a 3-1 victory to win 6-3 on aggregate courtesy of a Kylian Mbappe hat-trick. But still, the bad news didn’t stop there.

As confirmed by Guardiola, John Stones may now require surgery alongside Akanji after he suffered his latest injury blow in the second leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Just over a week ago, Stones looked likely to become the solution to Rodri’s absence in a surprise defensive midfield role. In just one half, he was forced to move back into the back four following Akanji’s injury. In just over a week, he’s been forced out the side altogether through another injury of his own.

To say that Manchester City are paying for any potential sins this season would be an understatement. For the first time in Guardiola’s career, Champions League qualification is in doubt and a trip to the Etihad is perhaps a scarier prospect for the Spaniard himself rather than league leaders Liverpool this weekend.

Stones, perhaps even more than most, will be a major miss up against the Reds and others in the coming weeks. The England international has often found himself at the centre of Guardiola’s praise in what has been an illustrious City career.

The former Barcelona manager praised his defender’s shock goalscoring form earlier this season when he netted against both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sparta Prague, telling reporters: “When Erling is not available John can play as a striker. Gerard Pique in Barca he had an incredible sense of goal and John is the same. He’s already scored a few goals. He’s back and I’m happy for him.”

Now set to be without both Stones and Akanji for some time, City must somehow create internal solutions yet again ahead of Liverpool’s visit.
