The next Rodri: Man City ready bid to land £21m sensation after Marmoush

Manchester City have certainly meant business during the current January transfer window, making three signings over the last few weeks.

Pep Guardiola may be going through the worst run of form during his 16-year managerial career, but it looks as though he is planning ahead for the future with regard to his new arrivals.

While the Premier League title may be out of reach this term, the Spaniard signed a new two-year extension late last year, signalling his intent to get the club back to where they belong.

There is just over a week left of the transfer window, but will City make another signing in that time?

It is no coincidence that City’s form has dropped off a cliff since Rodri suffered his season ending injury back in September. Will the club seek to sign a player who could turn out be to a younger version of the Spanish gem?

Manchester City's search for a midfielder

So far, Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov have all arrived in Manchester this month, bolstering Guardiola’s attacking and defensive options.

Transfer Focus

Two areas that needed some reinforcements have now been strengthened. Will City’s midfield be next?

According to reports in Spain, City are showing interest in midfielder Mikel Jauregizar, who plays for Athletic Bilbao.

Mikel Jauregizar for Athletic Bilbao.

Having scoured the transfer markets for midfield candidates, it appears as though Guardiola has found his man and is prepared to launch an opening bid of €25m (£21m) to secure his signature.

The report does on to say that any deal will likely take place in the summer, but having a plan in place will see another young talent arrive at the Etihad.

Douglas Luiz has also been targeted by City as a potential signing, but Juventus don’t want to sell which means any move would only be temporary between now and the end of the season.

Douglas Luiz for Juventus.

Jauregizar has all the qualities in his armoury to become Rodri 2.0 for Guardiola in Manchester, that’s for sure.

Rodri’s Manchester City statistics

In the summer of 2019, having just won their second Premier League title in a row, City broke their club record by spending £62.8m to sign Rodri from Atlético Madrid.

“Rodri has proven himself as a hugely talented, young midfielder,” said director of football Txiki Begiristain. “He has as all the attributes we are looking for.”

The midfielder has since proved to be one of Guardiola’s finest signings of his career.

Across his first three seasons, Rodri missed just 12 Premier League matches, but the 2022/23 campaign saw the midfielder establish himself as one of the best in the world.

The Etihad side won the treble of Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League that term, but Rodri conducted the orchestra.

Across the league campaign, the Spaniard averaged a 91% pass success rate, while creating nine big chances, making 1.9 tackles and winning an impressive 59% of his total duels per match.

If this season proved Rodri belonged among the best players in the world, his 2023/24 displays proved he wasn’t a one-season wonder.

He helped his club win another league title, before starring for Spain at Euro 2024, as his nation won every game to win their fourth continental crown.

The 28-year-old subsequently won the Ballon d’Or for playing a key role in the success of his club and country.

His injury this season has hampered the club’s chances of winning five league titles in a row. By signing Jauregizar – whether in the summer or this month – the Manchester side could be bringing an ideal long-term heir to Rodri. That’s a certainty.

Why Mikel Jauregizar could be Rodri 2.0

Like Rodri, Jauregizar emerged from a Spanish side’s youth system as a talented young midfielder with plenty to prove.

The 21-year-old made his senior debut for Bilbao last season, having featured 23 times for the youth team. He showed vast potential to succeed in the club’s top flight.

This season, the youngster has missed just three La Liga matches. During his time on the pitch, he averages 2.1 tackles per game, along with losing possession just 7.5 times per game while winning 50% of his ground duels.

The Spaniard is certainly raw, but his potential is vast, and there is no reason why he can’t be a success in the Premier League.

When compared to his positional peers in La Liga, the Bilbao starlet ranks in the top 3% for tackles (3.1) per 90, the top 21% for ball recoveries (5.67) per 90 and in the top 15% for goal-creating actions (0.44) per 90, proving he is effective whether or not his team have the ball.

Moving to City could be the ideal place for Jauregizar to develop, especially considering he can learn from Rodri, which would allow him to become a better player.

Amid the links to the player, writer David Walker praised the youngster, saying: “Athletic Bilbao’s young talent Mikel Jauregizar has also been mentioned as a possibility. City are very active in the transfer market this month – which is great – but the key position, that of DM. and future cover for Rodri, is the one glaring omission thus far.”

Unfortunately, as much as the City faithful would like him to stay, Rodri won’t be around forever. This means signing a player who could develop into his heir will be Guardiola’s next major priority.

If he can strike a deal to sign the current Bilbao star, especially for a measly £21m, then it could be a wise move in the transfer market.

City may not be at the level that has been demonstrated over the previous few years, but with the club’s business in the transfer market recently, they could return to their former glories next season.

Adding Jauregizar to his ranks, Guardiola will be set on returning City to the summit of English football.

Saved by Sarr: 6/10 Spurs dud just showed why Spurs need to spend millions

Tottenham Hotspur secured their first Premier League win since the 15th of December with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Brentford this afternoon.

An own goal from Vitaly Janelt and a lovely finish from substitute Pape Matar Sarr secured all three points for Ange Postecoglou’s side, relieving some of the pressure on the Aussie.

Whilst their chances of securing automatic qualification for European football this season appear all but over, it’s crucial that Spurs produce similar displays between now and the end of the campaign to keep the points ticking over.

The performance is evident that the squad is capable of producing impressive displays despite the current injury crisis, with the level produced now expected by the supporters on a consistent basis.

Numerous players impressed during the victory, cementing their places in the side and staking their claim for a regular spot even when the regulars return to first-team action.

Spurs' star performers against Brentford

Rodrigo Bentancur started at the base of the midfield for Postecoglou’s side, offering a deep-lying option to allow Yves Bissouma and Dejan Kulusevski to operate in more advanced roles.

The Uruguayan excelled in his 90-minute display, winning 100% of the tackles he entered, making a staggering seven clearances and 10 recoveries – helping the backline maintain a vital clean sheet.

He also completed 92% of the passes he attempted, whilst being successful with 100% of his attempted dribbles – producing an all-round brilliant display and one to remember.

As for Djed Spence, he continues to get better week after week in the first team, albeit featuring in a somewhat unnatural left-back role – but you wouldn’t know given how impressive he’s been of late.

Today was no different, winning three tackles, 80% of his duels, before completing all three dribbles, looking a threat at both ends of the pitch for Ange – certainly nailing down the full-back position given his recent outings.

The same can’t be said for one player who failed to impress from the start, highlighting the need for investment from the hierarchy on deadline day.

Spurs player showed why Levy has to spend on deadline day

Brazilian Richarlison was handed his fourth consecutive start under Ange on Sunday, looking to provide the goals in the absence of Dominic Solanke who remains sidelined through injury.

The 27-year-old has already scored once since his own return to action, finding the net against former side Everton, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to a 3-2 defeat at Goodison Park a couple of weeks ago.

Given the nature of the injury crisis in North London, he’s been catapulted back into first-team action, but has ultimately failed to provide the out-and-out nature of a centre-forward in the Aussie’s system.

Today was no different, once again failing to find the back of the net, eventually being replaced by youngster Dane Scarlett with just over ten minutes left in proceedings.

Richarlison failed to register a single effort on target, whilst also being dispossessed in all three of his efforts to take the ball past any of the opposition defenders.

He also lost possession 11 times from 35 touches which was two fewer touches than Kinksy while he won just nine of the 21 duels he entered during his 79-minute display on the pitch – looking far too wasteful and unable to make the ball stick at the end of the field.

As a result of his display, Richarlison was handed a 6/10 match rating by The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, the second-lowest rating of any player who started the clash across the capital.

However, his subsequent showing highlights the need for added reinforcements on deadline day, with new attackers needed to offer that continuous threat within the final third.

Mathys Tel has been the name most linked with a move to North London, but after his rejection, it’s pivotal owner Daniel Levy dips back into the market before the end of the window to give Ange the tools needed to succeed.

The arrival of Kevin Danso is a huge positive, but the Brazilian’s display at the Gtech today is evidence that more star quality is needed at the focal end to push the club in the right direction after their recent injury issues.

Borja invadiu a área e bateu no canto direito do goleiro Ivan, a bola ainda beijou a trave antes de cruzar a linha fatal.

MUDANÇAS NO TIMÃO

Michael Jones, Matthew Potts drive Durham into the ascendancy

Leicestershire collapse to seamer before opener’s 97 secures overnight lead

Michael Jones missed out on a second century of the season against the Foxes but Durham moved into a slender lead over the home side on day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship match, albeit with five wickets lost. The Scotland top-order batter, who made 108 against Leicestershire at Chester-le-Street in April, fell for 97 this time after being dropped on 80, but it was thanks largely to him that Durham closed on 239 for five with a 37-run advantage over the side at the bottom of Division Two.Left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson, the Leicestershire skipper, took three for 43 with a feeling he might have bowled himself more on a pitch giving him some help. Veteran seamer Chris Wright picked up two well deserved late wickets.Earlier, England pace bowler Matthew Potts had taken six for 52 as Leicestershire were dismissed for 202, debutant Sol Budinger failing to add to his 63 not out overnight but finishing as his new side’s top scorer.Having resumed on 97 for two, Leicestershire were all out by lunch – albeit one delayed by the fall of the ninth wicket. Following the departure of Budinger leg before in the third over of the morning, they collapsed to 130 for eight, losing six wickets for 31.Potts wrecked the middle order with three wickets in four overs. Swinging deliveries had Louis Kimber and Harry Swindells caught behind, the latter off an inside edge, before his pace left Ed Barnes surveying his shattered stumps.Colin Ackermann was leg before playing across one from Paul Coughlin, who picked up a third wicket in the innings when Tom Scriven was caught at backward point off a careless shot.Landing the final, decisive blows proved more difficult for the Durham bowlers, the last two wickets adding 72 more runs, although Wright was dropped at second slip on 15 before he fell for 29. Parkinson eked out 31 before a top edge to cover brought his downfall, Potts dismissing both for his second six-for against Leicestershire this season. The second session went no better for the home side as Durham put on exactly 100 for one wicket, although Leicestershire’s bowlers were a little unlucky. Wright and the left-armer Michael Finan posed problems for the Durham openers, both of whom were fortunate at times. When the ball did find the edge, it went to ground. Jones reached fifty from 71 balls with eight fours. In the event, it was after Parkinson brought himself on after 26 overs that they made a breakthrough, the skipper drawing Sean Dickson down the pitch to drive a ball that started wide and turned wider. Rishi Patel held a good catch at backward point. As Parkinson celebrated, spectators may have been forgiven for wondering why he had delayed his introduction for so long, especially given that the wicket clearly suited him. With the left-handed Scott Borthwick next in, there seemed to be an opportunity.Nonetheless, after bowling a couple of overs before tea, he went back to seam at the start of the third session, although he should have seen a reward when Jones, on 80, smarting from a blow on the thigh the previous delivery, edged Barnes to first slip only for Kimber to spill a regulation chance. Wright again looked sharp. It was 20 overs into the final session before Parkinson bowled again, and again he made an immediate impact as Jones, who had moved to within three runs of a third ton of the season with his 16th four in the previous over, edged to Ackermann at slip. There was clearly something there for Parkinson, who struck another blow a couple of overs later, surprising Borthwick with a quicker ball that bowled him through his legs. With the floodlights on but the light still good, the persevering Wright, still finding plenty of movement, picked up two deserved wickets, having both David Bedingham and Coughlin was caught behind. Nic Maddinson – penalised for an oversized bat against Derbyshire last week – is unbeaten on 37.

Tottenham keen on "sensational" £60m maestro as Ange eyes two EPL players

Tottenham Hotspur are now closely monitoring two Premier League players ahead of the summer transfer window, with a “sensational” £60m midfielder on their radar, according to a report.

Spurs struggling amid injury crisis

Tottenham’s season has undoubtedly been hampered by the scale of the injury crisis in N17, and Ange Postecoglou bemoaned the number of players currently sidelined in the wake of his side exiting the EFL Cup at the hands of Liverpool.

“Vicario, Romero, Destiny, Van de Ven, Solanke, Odobert… I could go on and on. We had 10 senior players missing. If you take seven or eight key players from any team and you’re playing the best team in the league at the best, I don’t think you make judgements in these moments.”

After crashing out of the EFL Cup as a result of the 4-0 drubbing at Anfield, Postecoglou is undoubtedly under increasing pressure, with recent performances not good enough, regardless of the number of players currently on the sidelines.

However, the Australian continues to work on potential signings for the summer, with the injuries this season perhaps indicating the manager needs a bigger squad to work with if he is going to continue to play such an intense style of football.

According to reports from Spain, Tottenham are now closely monitoring two Premier League players for the end of the season, namely Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Southampton’s Tyler Dibling.

The English duo have attracted Spurs’ attention after putting in some impressive performances for their respective clubs, with Dibling enjoying a breakout season at St Mary’s, despite the fact his side are at serious risk of relegation.

The report claims the Lilywhites are looking to sign young players for the future, rather than focusing on big-name signings, and the Premier League duo fit the bill in that regard, with Dibling just 18, while Wharton – valued at £60m in the summer – is 21.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 8, 2025 Dibling and Wharton impressing in the Premier League

It is no wonder Tottenham are looking to sign the talented English youngsters given that they have been in good form this season, with Dibling solidifying his place in the Southampton first team, picking up four goals and two assists in all competitions.

Crystal Palace star Wharton has been impressing for quite some time now, receiving a call-up to the England squad for Euro 2024, and he has been the subject of high praise from members of the media.

Dibling and Wharton are showing signs of great promise, so it is exciting news Tottenham are in the running for their signatures, although it may be difficult to lure them to north London if they fail to qualify for Europe next season, which is looking increasingly likely.

Sean Abbott is eyeing the chance to prove his red-ball game is up to Test standard in a long-awaited stretch of Sheffield Shield as the silver lining to missing Australia’s T20 World Cup squad.Abbott will play his first red-ball game in close to a year on Tuesday, when NSW take on Queensland at Drummoyne. In many ways, Abbott has become the forgotten man of Australian red-ball cricket. A year ago he was being talked about as an option for an Ashes debut if one of Australia’s quicks went down or was rested. Then life, Covid bubbles and injuries got in the way.He pulled out of the Australia A squad early last summer ahead of the birth of daughter Ella. And when Pat Cummins became a Covid-19 close contact and Josh Hazlewood was injured at the Gabba, Michael Neser and Jhye Richardson got the chance.Related

A week later, on Boxing Day, Scott Boland was handed his debut and starred, earning selection for the ensuing Test tour of Pakistan. Meanwhile, Abbott has not played a red-ball game since. He was injured after last summer’s Big Bash, then missed the end of the Shield season while with the white-ball squad in Pakistan. He broke his finger before the first T20 in Sri Lanka, played two top-end ODIs against New Zealand and a T20 in India before sitting on the sideline against England.”I definitely wouldn’t say I am frustrated. I’m right where I want to be,” Abbott told AAP.  “Although you are running drinks, it’s only because our Aussie side is so strong and the bowlers do well to play all three formats.”But this year I have got my cricket all going in the right direction and the players I am with are almost the best coaches.  My white-ball has always been there, but I have got my red-ball going right. So all of a sudden I am either on stand-by or getting called up.”This week should mark the first of five straight games for Abbott before the BBL, with the only possible interruption a call-up to Australia’s Test squad. In his two Shield games last summer, Abbott took 11 wickets at 20.72.  In the season before it was 21 at 29.14, while also scoring a maiden century and averaging 63.33 with the bat.”I’ve made no secret that playing Test cricket is the dream, and I have to play Shield to do that,” Abbott said. “If the opportunity comes up, I know 100 percent I am ready to go.”Even though I have only been in white-ball squads for the past two years, you are still working on things. Unless you’re doing structured bowling, your line-and-lengths and the way you feel at the crease is still the same as you would be aiming for in a four-day game.”

Two Hobart hailstorms and firm resistance from Victoria’s top order have combined to deny Tasmania back-to-back Sheffield Shield wins. After resuming at 44 for 1 on the final day and still needing another 140 to make Tasmania bat again, Victoria made clear their plan to bat through the day at Blundstone Arena. But they needed to face just 45.5 overs, as heavy rain and hail stopped play early in the middle session with Victoria 113 for 1.The rain eventually subsided as an early tea was called, but 12 minutes after the players returned more heavy hail hit with Victoria 122 for 1. The teams agreed to a draw.Opener Travis Dean offered the most resistance for Victoria, soaking up 200 balls for his 70 not out.His innings included a 50-over stand that netted 80 runs with Mitchell Perry, who was unbeaten on 31 from 159 balls.Victoria were in the box seat after the opening two days thanks to an unbeaten century from debutant Ashley Chandrasinghe that allowed them to declare at 7-351.But Jordan Silk’s quickfire 154 from 161 balls helped Tasmania take a mammoth 184-run first-innings lead. That gave the Tigers a shot at a second straight win after toppling South Australia a fortnight ago, but any hopes of a win were quickly extinguished on Tuesday. The result marks Victoria’s third straight draw to start the season after they were denied by Western Australia and South Australia in the opening rounds.
