Imagine him & DCL: Everton can land their own Nico Williams

Everton have had a tough time of things in pre-season so far. The Toffees have won just one game, less than ideal preparation for Sean Dyche’s side as they look to survive relegation for another season and propel themselves up the Premier League table.

The Toffees first game of pre-season saw them draw 3-3 away to Irish club Sligo Rovers. Dyche’s side were rescued by a late brace from exciting young striker Youssef Chermiti after previously being 3-1 down. They also suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of League 2 side Salford City, despite a James Garner goal.

That was followed by a calamitous 3-0 defeat to Coventry City away from home, although Saturday's trip to Deepdale to face Preston North End did prove fruitful, as the visitors ran out 3-0 winners. Next up is an exciting clash at Goodison Park as they face Italian giants AS Roma.

After an active summer in the transfer market, Everton will no doubt be desperate to string some strong performances together in the early weeks of the season to help climb the league table early on. They have recently been linked with one attacker who could give them a cutting edge this season.

Everton target Serie A winger

The player in question here is AC Milan and Nigerian international winger Samuel Chukwueze. The 25-year-old struggled in his first season for the Rossoneri, and could now be sold this summer with the Italian giants looking to make a profit on the player.

As reported in Spain earlier this week Everton are the main side who are thought to be interested in bringing Chukwueze to the club and are believed to be ‘leading the race to sign him’ this summer.

Villarreal forward Samuel Chukwueze in action.

The report suggests that there are other English top-flight teams interested in acquiring the services of the Nigerian international, who has 38 caps for the Super Eagles. However, Everton are the club best placed to sign at the current stage.

In terms of a price, the report suggests that Milan would like to make this a profitable deal. Thus, they would like more than the £17m plus add-ons they paid for him just last summer. It is stated that Milan would accept an offer between £38m and £42m in order to commission a sale this summer.

Why Chukwueze would be a good signing

There is no denying that the 2023/24 campaign was a tough one for Chukwueze. In his debut season in Milan, the 25-year-old featured 24 times in Serie A, scoring just once and registering only three assists. However, he did play at AFCON with Nigeria and suffered a hamstring issue at the end of the campaign.

Although he struggled at times last season only showing flashes of his brilliance, football scout Antonio Mango still believes he is a “superstar”, and perhaps a move to Everton can help him unlock his full potential. His profile is that of a rapid, direct two-way winger who has quick feet and loves to take on a defender.

He certainly has shades of Nico Williams, one of the best up-and-coming talents in European football at the minute. Should Everton sign Chukwueze this summer, they could bring in a player certainly reminiscent of the Atheltic Club winger – as noted by FBref's 'similar players' model.

In fact, their similarities are also reflected in their FBref stats. Firstly, their ball carrying stats are very similar. Chukwueze averages 4.6 progressive carries per 90 minutes, although Williams slightly edges him out with 5.7. You can tell from this just how front-footed they are on the ball, looking to get at a defender and take them on.

One area Chukwueze excels over Williams is his creative passing. The Nigerian averages 4.51 progressive passes and 1.95 passes into the final third, whereas the Euro 2024 winner comes in slightly off his pace. Instead, the 22-year-old averages just 2.63 progressive passes and 1.04 passes into the final third.

Spain star Nico Williams

The similarities are clear between the two, and should Everton bring Chukwueze into the club this summer, he would add an excellent dynamic to a squad currently lacking that sort of profile in their squad.

He could also form a dangerous partnership with Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Toffees marksman had a tough campaign last season and scored just seven times in 32 Premier League appearances.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

However, when in his best form, can prove to be a deadly Premier League striker. Given Chukwueze's progressive nature, that could be a duo that really hits the ground running and could help the Englishman find the back of the net more often next season.

Whilst a deal could cost a pretty penny, he is not earning too much a week, with a wage of £84k per week as per Capology, meaning it would not be too expensive in that sense. This could be a signing that helps get Everton up the table and pushing for higher honours again, and one they might do well not to miss out on.

Dom Bess takes four as India face battle to avoid follow-on

Rishabh Pant, Cheteshwar Pujara led recovery but hefty deficit remains

Matt Roller07-Feb-20211:16

Bell: The best we’ve seen of Bess in an England shirt

Contrasting half-centuries from Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara led the recovery after India lost four early wickets in reply to England’s first-innings total of 578, but they remain in danger of having to follow on as they attempt to save the first Test at Chepauk.Jofra Archer had removed both openers in a skilful new-ball burst, before Dom Bess struck to dismiss Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to leave India 73 for 4 before drinks on the third afternoon and still more than 500 runs in arrears.Pant launched a breathless counter-attack, hitting nine fours and five sixes as he dominated Jack Leach either side of tea, while Pujara worked the ball around in a more restrained innings. But both men fell to Bess in the evening session, leaving India 321 runs behind at the close and needing a tail-end rearguard on the fourth morning to avoid batting again. In the morning session, India waited 5.2 overs before taking the third new ball, but struck immediately after doing so when Jasprit Bumrah pinned Bess lbw, playing around his front pad. R Ashwin’s hard toil brought him his third wicket, clean-bowling the slog-sweeping James Anderson to leave England 578 all out having added 23 to their overnight score.Related

Archer provided an early breakthrough with the new ball, with his fast leg-cutter finding Rohit Sharma’s outside edge as he poked defensively on the back foot. Shubman Gill, in his first Test innings at home, played his shots and looked in superb touch as he clipped Anderson off his pads and drove Archer through straight midwicket. But Gill too fell inside the first 10 overs. Shaping to play an on-drive against a full ball from Archer, Gill was through his shot early as it gripped in the surface, with Archer pulling his fingers down the side of the ball. Anderson dived sharply to his left at mid-on, and took a good low catch six inches from the ground to leave India 44 for 2.Joe Root decided to back his spinners after lunch, with Bess returning after a solitary over before the break. With seamers rotating at the other end, Bess settled into his rhythm against Pujara and Kohli, finding a good length outside the off stump and letting natural variation from the pitch do most of the work.Rishabh Pant congratulates Cheteshwar Pujara on his fifty•BCCI

Kohli never settled at the crease. He was beaten outside the off stump by Archer, with early signs of reverse-swing, and chipped Bess just short of midwicket in the following over. His dismissal came thanks to a clever piece of bowling, as Bess pushed the ball a fraction wider outside off stump, finding sharp turn and extra bounce from a length. Kohli lunged forward to defend towards cover-point, but could only inside-edge to Ollie Pope at short leg.Bess struck again six balls later. He overpitched outside off, as Rahane shimmied down to turn a full ball into a low full toss, and drove uppishly into the covers. Root, in tight, flung himself to his left, putting out a hopeful left hand and, to his delight – and England’s, the ball stuck. India were 73 for 4, still 505 runs behind and in deep trouble. But Pant, fresh from his fourth-innings heroics at the Gabba, was never likely to rest on his laurels. Instead, he took Archer for a couple of early boundaries, and when Pujara drove Bess for a pair of fours through mid-off, Root turned to Jack Leach, looking to make use of the footholes outside Pant’s off stump. At that moment, Pant made the decision to attack. With men in close around the bat, and the ball spinning, zipping, spitting and bouncing out of the rough as early as the second morning when Shahbaz Nadeem had bowled to Ben Stokes, he concluded that defending was the riskier option, not least when the second ball he faced from Leach bounced sharply from outside off to find his inside edge. To his next ball, he skipped down the pitch and planted Leach over long-on, and then just about cleared the fielder at deep midwicket a ball later.Leach stuck to his guns, finding a good length wide outside the off stump and aiming for the footmarks, but Pant continued to hit him over the top, launching him for two more sixes in his first spell. With the spotlight on Pant, Pujara then benefitted as the spinners missed their lengths, pulling well off the back foot and working singles and twos at will. Both men reached their half-centuries with boundaries in the 40th over: Pujara’s came from 106 balls, Pant’s off 40.The seamers returned after tea without managing to stem the steady flow, though Anderson struck Pujara on the glove with an in-dipper from a length that reared up off the pitch. Pujara continued to score freely against Bess when he returned, but then fell to a stroke of bad luck: rocking back to a long-hop, he pulled Bess into Pope’s back as he took evasive action at short leg, with the ball looping up into Rory Burns’ hands at midwicket.Pant continued to attack Leach, but then fell to Bess: he charged down the pitch, but lost his shape as the ball turned away from the bat, and holed out to Leach in the deep on the off side. Ashwin and Sundar saw India through to stumps with a useful stand – Sundar was dropped on 25, Archer shelling the catch running back – but England remained in the ascendancy at stumps.

Sky Sports: Leeds battling two Championship clubs for "remarkable" attacker

He’s a man in demand…

ByTom Cunningham Aug 2, 2024

Archie Gray was perhaps the most regrettable of them all, with Leeds releasing a heartfelt statement after their decision to sell the English sensation to Tottenham for around £40 million with Joe Rodon coming the other way.

"Understanding the attraction of Premier League and European football, the club, with a heavy heart, agreed the transfer, but the move has strengthened the board’s resolve to ultimately return Leeds to a position where it can meet the footballing ambitions of even its brightest stars," wrote Leeds (via Ben Jacobs).

"Whilst we understand that supporters will be hugely disappointed to lose such a home-grown talent, and a family name so synonymous with Leeds United, the move improves the club’s chance to compete for automatic promotion next season by increasing our ability to build a competitive squad within the league’s financial control regulations.

"Everyone at Leeds United is heartbroken to see one of our own depart and would like to thank Archie for all his efforts and professionalism."

After Gray, it is believed Crysencio Summerville is on the verge of a move to West Ham from Leeds, which will be a sore one to take for Farke considering the winger was crucial for his Whites side last season.

The Dutchman racked up 21 goals in all competitions under Farke, while former mainstay midfielder Glen Kamara will also be a considerable miss after his move to Ligue 1 side Rennes.

Given the sheer amount of outgoings, Leeds supporters will be hoping that their club are planning to sign replacements, particularly for Summerville.

Farke personally wants Leeds to sign Gabriel Sara

The Yorkshire side have been linked with one pretty exciting addition regularly in Norwich City attacker Gabriel Sara.

Sara, who bagged 14 goals and 13 assists across 53 appearances in all competitions last season for the Canaries, stood out as David Wagner's superstar player on their run to the Championship play-off semi-finals – where they were beaten by Leeds.

According to transfer journalist Graeme Bailey, Farke personally wants Leeds to do a deal for Sara, but it won't be easy, as Norwich value the Brazilian at around £20 million.

"Everyone can see his ability but he is now controlling games. He’s everywhere off the ball," said former Norwich City boss Kenny McLean last year.

"That was a big thing when the new manager came in and he was really drumming that into him to be more aggressive, get against people and he is doing that. It was just consistency with him. For me, right now, he is the full package."

England dominate as Joe Root hits second double-century of 2021

For the first time since 2011, India conceded more than 550 at home

Matt Roller06-Feb-20212:54

Gambhir: Staying low helps Root in sweeping the ball well

Joe Root’s second double-hundred in three matches helped England turn the screw on the second day in Chennai, as India conceded more than 550 in a single innings of a home Test for the first time since 2011.Dom Sibley’s dismissal in the last over of the first day had provided India with an opening, with England in danger of wasting an impressive start to the Test and with memories of their last visit to Chepauk – when they had racked up 477 and lost by an innings – still fresh.Related

2nd day, as it happened

Joe Root: 644 runs (and counting) in three Tests

But Ben Stokes opted to attack as the pitch started to show signs of wear, racking up 82 off 118 balls to take England to lunch unscathed, before Root’s stand with Ollie Pope in the afternoon session helped them towards 500. India were eventually rewarded for their bowlers’ hard work, taking four wickets for 52 in the evening session to leave England eight down, but their focus may now be on saving – rather than winning – the Test. After driving the scoring rate on the first evening in partnership with Sibley, Root played second fiddle for most of his stand with Stokes. Having survived an inswinging yorker from Jasprit Bumrah early in the day, jamming his bat down late to keep it out via an edge into the boot, Stokes decided to put his foot down, and launched R Ashwin for a straight six inside the first half-hour.There were signs in the first session that the pitch was not quite as flat as it had seemed on the first day, with puffs of dust from the surface and variable bounce for the spinners. Washington Sundar found some trampoline bounce from the footholes outside Stokes’ off stump, while Ashwin was convinced he had trapped Stokes lbw reverse-sweeping, only to discover on review that the ball had hit him on the glove.India burned their second review five balls later, when Shahbaz Nadeem’s arm ball struck Root on the pad, but ball-tracking confirmed that it would have missed the top of leg stump. Stokes had two further lives, when Ashwin put down a half-chance off his own bowling and Cheteshwar Pujara, diving at full stretch, failed to cling on at midwicket. Stokes made his intentions clear by slog-sweeping Nadeem for six three balls after the second drop, before reverse-sweeping him for a pair of boundaries to bring up fifty.Joe Root is all smiles after getting to his double-century•BCCI

Stokes continued to score freely after lunch, clubbing Nadeem over long-on and clipping Bumrah’s slower ball through midwicket, but eventually holed out, slog-sweeping straight down square leg’s throat where Pujara clung on despite initially fumbling.Pope joined Root at 387 for 4 and unsurprisingly looked slightly rusty after six months out through injury. Kohli used India’s third and final review when Pope swept to leg gully, but replays showed it had clearly hit the forearm rather than the glove.Root, meanwhile, picked up where he had left off on Friday, happily milking Sundar and Nadeem for singles to keep the score ticking over. He was creative in playing reverse-sweeps and laps, but reached his double with a more orthodox shot, skipping down the wicket to swing Ashwin over the long-on boundary for six.Root has scored 644 Test runs in five innings over the past four weeks, and his run tally in 2021 is more than double that of his nearest challenger, Steven Smith. As Rohit Sharma came on to bowl his part-time offspin before tea – which included an impression of Harbhajan Singh’s action – it seemed as though India were becoming increasingly desperate in their bid to dismiss him. He also passed Alec Stewart to go third in the list of England’s all-time leading run-scorers.But the breakthroughs arrived after the interval. Having miscued an Ashwin full toss over Pant’s head two overs before, Pope was struck in front while playing down the wrong line to a ball that didn’t turn and was plumb lbw to leave England five down. In the following over, Root was pinned in front of leg stump by Nadeem, playing down the wrong line to one that skidded on, and while England warmly applauded his epic innings, India sensed an opportunity to expose the tail at 477 for 6.Jos Buttler and Dom Bess rebuilt with an unflashy stand, with Buttler rifling Ashwin for a pair of fours, cutting balls either side of point. He benefitted from Kohli’s enthusiasm to review when he got a thin edge behind off Sundar, which was given not out by umpire Anil Chaudhary to India’s chagrin. Ultra-Edge confirmed that the decision would have been overturned if India had been able to review. The stand took the total past 500 as India’s hard graft continued, before the tireless Ishant Sharma took two wickets in two balls, extracting prodigious reverse-swing with the old ball. First, Buttler left one alone that he thought would miss his off stump only to look back and see it pegged back, before Jofra Archer made a mess of a similar delivery and was cleaned up first ball. Ishant’s double-strike took him to 299 career wickets, though he could not complete 300 with a hat-trick after overstepping.Jack Leach joined Bess, who offered a straightforward chance to Rohit at midwicket only to be put down, and with India’s no-ball struggles returning in the final half-hour, they had added 30 together by the close. When they resume in the morning, it will be the first time in 20 years that England’s first innings has extended into the third day uninterrupted.

Lost the ball 18x: Farke signing just had one of his worst games for Leeds

To say there is excitement surrounding Leeds United’s prospects this season would be wrong.

Daniel Farke’s men should be playing Premier League football. Alas, on the grandest of stages in English football – Wembley – they came unstuck.

Leeds are ready to go one better this term but they will have to do so without star man and Championship Player of the Season Crysencio Summerville. They will also have to do without cult hero Archie Gray.

The Dutchman is now a West Ham United player. Gray is now at Tottenham Hotspur.

That said, as Leeds hit the woodwork three times in the opening ten minutes against Portsmouth through Willy Gnonto, Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, it looked as though things could finish as a cricket score.

That looked even likelier when Pascal Struijk converted an early penalty after Daniel James had been fouled.

Leeds had all the ball. Leeds had all of the chances but in typical fashion, couldn’t get over the line.

They somehow trailed at the break after Elias Sorensen squirmed the ball through Illan Meslier.

In truth, the Frenchman should have saved it, but what’s new? The goalkeeper continues to look a shadow of the player we saw in the top flight. Callum Lang then struck home a rasping effort from range to silence Elland Road.

Gnonto eventually got his goal but a late penalty from that man Lang looked to have secured the points for newly promoted Pompey.

Leeds love drama, though, and the returning Brendan Aaronson popped up to rescue a late point.

It wasn’t an ideal way for the Whites to start the season and there will be some worries, although perhaps not in attack where it’s thought the biggest hole had been left after Summerville’s exit. Instead, there should be fears over the Leeds defence.

Joe Rodon’s performance in numbers

We’ve already mentioned Meslier but we should also mention debutant Jayden Bogle.

Arriving from Sheffield United earlier this summer, the full-back looked in good order going forward.

Creating an exciting partnership with the speedy James, Bogle succeeded with two of his three dribbles and created two big chances.

Though, as Blades supporters will have been able to tell you, he’s not always the best defender. Debatable penalty or not, he was the man at fault late on.

On top of that, he committed a further three fouls, not ideal as Leeds hope to find their successor to Gray.

Also at fault was Joe Rodon, a man so consistent, a man so reliable and a man so sought-after following his heroic efforts last term.

After an early season suspension, the Welshman went on to start every single game and his outing against Pompey on the opening weekend was his 45th consecutive start for Leeds. There is a reason they fought so hard to bring him back to Elland Road on a permanent basis.

Rodon was a large part of the squad that reached the play-offs in 2023/24. He was magnificent alongside mainly Ampadu at the back.

That partnership was split up this time. Struijk featured at centre-half alongside him while his fellow Welshman played in midfield.

Rodon perhaps saved one of his worst performances in a Leeds shirt for the visit of John Mousinho’s men on Saturday.

Handed a 5/10 match rating by Leeds Live reporter Beren Cross, he described the centre-back’s display as ‘one of his poorest games in memory’.

Why? Well, he was not his usually composed self. It was Rodon’s poor clearance that led to Lang’s first-half goal and overall, he did not convince.

The defender gave away possession on 18 occasions, an extraordinarily high level for a centre-back, and won just six of his 12 duels.

It was his ability to play from the back that let him down in particular, with the YEP’s Graham Smyth saying that he ‘struggled with his passing’ and made ‘some poor giveaways’. Rodon’s 76% pass completion rate would substantiate that point.

So, we all know Rodon can perform consistently but if Leeds are to challenge for promotion again, he will need to find his level of performance from last season swiftly.

Forget about Rowe: Leeds could make move to sign "remarkable" PL winger

The Whites could decide to swoop for the talented youngster this summer.

If India Under-19s vs Pakistan Under-19s was the most high-profile contest of the ongoing Under-19s Asia Cup, then the contest part of it was all but over by the 14th over of the chase. Deepesh Devendran led the way with the ball, striking three times to reduce Pakistan to 30 for 4 after India made 240 in a game reduced to 49 overs due to rain.A brief rebuilding stand between captain Farhan Yousaf and Huzaifa Ahsan gave Pakistan hope. But after starring with the bat, Kanishk Chouhan got the second of his three wickets to dismiss Yousaf and break the 47-run partnership. Eventually, India eased past Pakistan, who were bowled out for 150, with only three batters getting into double-figures. Ahsan made the only substantial contribution of the innings – 70 off 83 – and was the eighth to fall as Chouhan’s third wicket.India could have had a much bigger total to defend but lost their way with the bat. They were 73 for 1 in nine overs after Pakistan won the toss and chose to field. But next over, captain Ayush Mhatre fell on 38 off 25 balls, and India slowed down a bit.Three wickets in a ten-over period left India at 113 for 4, but Aaron George and Abhigyan Kundu added 60, the highest partnership of the game. Abdul Subhan hit back for Pakistan by getting rid of both batters within three balls. Subhan first had Kundu caught behind for 22 to start the 32nd over. Two balls later, Subhan got George, who finished with 85 off 88 deliveries with 12 fours and a six.India were 174 for 6 and that is when Chouhan played a crucial knock. His run-a-ball 46 from No. 7 dragged the total to 240. Chouhan smashed two fours and three sixes to play what turned out to be a match-winning innings, and take home the Player-of-the-Match award for his all-round show. The India and Pakistan players continued to follow the no-handshake policy after first doing it at the senior men’s Asia Cup earlier this year, and later at the senior women’s ODI World Cup.
