Essex have admitted “further work needs to be done” on their approach to diversity after photographs of their celebrations at Lord’s appeared to show a Muslim player being showered with alcohol.Essex lifted the Bob Willis Trophy on Sunday, triggering scenes of jubilation on the balcony of their dressing room at Lord’s. Amid the photographs of those moments, Feroze Khushi, a 21-year-old batsman who played several games in the earlier stages of the tournament, is seen grimacing as beer is poured over his head by another young player on the staff. ESPNcricinfo has chosen not to name that player. While Essex released a statement insisting the club “pride themselves on their work within multi-diverse communities”, they admitted the celebrations “did not meet the inclusive values of the organisation”.”As an organisation, Essex County Cricket Club prides themselves on their work within multi-diverse communities throughout the county and the surrounding areas,” the statement said.”For a substantial period of time, Essex have had a multi-diverse team with players from different backgrounds, religions, and races, where cricket is at the heart of these communities.”The club has worked extremely hard and will continue to bring cricket to anybody and everybody, and educate on diversity, but further work needs to be done across both sport and society in general, to widen people’s knowledge and make them more aware of cultural differences.”Essex County Cricket Club are in regular dialogue with the ECB and the PCA around the education and development in this area.”But the statement left some members of the Muslim cricket community underwhelmed. “I’m not really satisfied with that,” Sajid Patel of the National Cricket League, told ESPNcricinfo. “We’ve been discussing such issues for a long time. I would have thought the answers to these issues had filtered down by now.”I don’t think there’s any benefit in blaming one, young player. Looking at those photographs, it seems the issue is more about ignorance than malice. No doubt the young man will learn from the experience.”But I do blame the whole system. I do blame the team manager and the senior players who didn’t foresee this problem. I do think the PCA should be doing more to educate young players in this regard.”In recent years, England’s Test and ODI teams – which have regularly featured two Muslim players in Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid – have desisted from spraying champagne during their trophy presentations to allow the pair to take a fuller part in the celebrations.”We’ve seen the England team manage their celebrations in such a way that the Muslim players are included,” Patel added. “We should be better than this by now.”

Chelsea submit bid to sign "special" talent who’s as exciting as Kendry

With the transfer window open and ready for action, Chelsea look set for another busy summer with both incomings and outgoings at the club.

The club have already acquired multiple highly touted South American talents in recent years, with Kendry Paez, Andrey Santos, and Angelo, as well as more established South American stars such as Enzo Fernández and Moises Caicedo.

So, as Chelsea look to almost stockpile these highly talented youngsters, who could be next on the list?

Chelsea transfer news

According to recent reports from journalist Uriel Lugt, Chelsea have made an offer for Boca Juniors Aaron Anselmino.

The offer is reportedly around the £13.4m mark, with Chelsea offering the 19-year-old a four-year deal.

This is comparable to the transfer fee for Paez when he was purchased from Independiente for around £10m, as the London club continue in their attempts to acquire the best young talent at cut prices, before they become unattainable later down the line.

Why Anselmino could be as exciting as Paez

Paez has been capturing the imagination for the last few months due to some stunning performances in his homeland. The catalogue of goals he's scoring (such as the one below) has generated much excitement.

Yet, there should be some fuss made around Anselmino too.

The "special" central defender talent, as dubbed by Analyst Ben Mattinson, made five appearances for Boca Juniors this campaign, scoring one goal in the Copa Sudamericana, and kept three clean sheets in his only three full 90s played.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Anselmino's game is how calm and composed he is at just 19-years-old. The confidence in his own touch, awareness of those around him and fearless approach allows him to evade pressure, calmly circulating possession at the back and playing through the lines.

There have already seen comparisons to another Chelsea great, Thiago Silva who has just left the club, someone who plays with complete composure and calmness on a football pitch.

Another similarity you can see with Anselmino and Silva is their timed aggression in the challenge, and their understanding of the right time to apply pressure.

Silva often had to do this in his later years due to a lack of pace, meaning his timing was even more key. However, whilst Anselmino is not slow, it's his timely aggression when challenging for the ball that often allows him to come out on top, realising the right trigger to close space and when to back off.

Similarly to Paez, Anselmino is highly rated in South America, and is deemed to be a "special" talent.

If Chelsea can get their hands on the defender to bolster their options at the back in years to come, on top of highly rated talents mentioned earlier, such as Paez, Santos, Angelo, Fernandez and Caicedo, they could end up building a strong South American core in the future.

Chelsea's stunning starting XI in 2025 built around Kendry Paez.

Batting plans could make the difference in Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders clash of equals

In high-scoring Sharjah, the biggest hitters from both sides might bat further up than usual

Sreshth Shah02-Oct-20208:35

Are KKR under-utilising Kuldeep Yadav?

Big pictureWith two wins and one comprehensive defeat each, the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Delhi Capitals have begun their IPL 2020 campaigns well enough to be among the top few teams. With every result causing big changes to the points table, though, only victories can ensure they remain in the top half of the table. Both teams have earned their two victories primarily on the back of their bowling. Pat Cummins and Kagiso Rabada have hit their straps for the Knight Riders and the Capitals respectively, and both teams have bowling line-ups that more or less cancel each other out: for the Capitals’ Anrich Nortje, there’s the Knight Riders’ Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti. Among the spinners, the combination of Axar Patel and Amit Mishra for the Capitals have made run-scoring as difficult as the Knight Riders pair of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy haveSo, the way these teams will likely be separated is by who bats smarter. They are playing in Sharjah – where all four innings so far have crossed 200 – and both have their share of hard-hitters. Batting spots, therefore, could play an important role. The cardinal sin at Sharjah would be if teams can’t maximise their batting resources across 20 overs, and therefore it will be an interesting sub-plot to see if teams use their biggest hitters further up the order than usual. Even No. 4, where Rishabh Pant bats, and Shimron Hetmyer at No. 5 could be wasted that low at Sharjah for the Capitals, and in what order Narine, Andre Russell, Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik bat could seal the deal for the Knight Riders. This season, ten of the first 13 games have been won by teams batting first, but in Sharjah that stat is split down the middle with one win each for the batting and chasing side. It’s also the first time both teams would be playing at this venue. Although the Capitals lost their last game – compared to the Knight Riders, who are seeking their third straight win – Shreyas Iyer’s team enters the contest knowing they have won their last three meetings against Dinesh Karthik’s men.In the newsOn the eve of the match, Capitals’ bowling coach Ryan Harris confirmed that R Ashwin had had a full session at the nets and could be up for selection after recovering from a shoulder injury, sustained in their tournament opener. The final word on Ashwin’s availability, however, remains with the medical team. The Knight Riders are injury-free.Has the experiment of opening with Sunil Narine run its course?•BCCI

Likely XIsDelhi Capitals: 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Anrich Nortje, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Amit MishraKolkata Knight Riders: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Sunil Narine, 3 Nitish Rana, 4 Dinesh Karthik (capt, wk), 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Pat Cummins, 8 Kamlesh Nagarkoti, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Shivam Mavi, 11 Varun ChakravarthyStrategy punts In Sharjah, batsmen are going to try to send even the best bowlers for plenty. Therefore, attacking up front may be the best ploy for the later overs. Teams should try to take as many wickets early and not save their best resources for the death. That means Rabada, for example, who almost always bowls two overs at the top, could be given a third over in the powerplay. If the first punt is successful, though, then the Capitals should hold back at least one over from Rabada because Russell has struggled against ultra-fast bowlers, especially if they can execute the yorkers and short balls. Russell would remember that Rabada had floored him before dismissing him in the Super Over in 2019, and teams also know that Russell struggles against particular deliveries. Russell has an average of 22 against the short ball, including six dismissals in his last 28 innings, while his strike rate is just 62.16 against the yorker. However, whoever bowls to him must also be accurate because if the yorker ends up as a full toss, he hits those deliveries at a strike rate of 225.92. The Knight Riders may not want to open with Narine, because dot-balls can hurt teams in Sharjah more than elsewhere. Sides have slowly begun to understand that the short ball, on a leg stump line, is the way to keep Narine quiet, and off the 26 deliveries he has faced in IPL 2020, 17 (including leg-byes and dismissals) have been dot balls. It’s a dangerously high number. The Knight Riders may opt to leave out left-arm wristspinner Yadav. He has been the least successful of their three spinners, and the Capitals have four left-handers in their top seven, which poses a poor match-up for Yadav. They could play an extra batsman since, currently, their No. 7 is Cummins. There’s no real difference in economies for spinners (10.6) and pacers (11.0) in Sharjah this season, and therefore, more depth in their batting might allow their top order to bat more freely. If they do want some spin overs, Nitish Rana can bowl handy offbreaks, although they may not want to use him at all, since pacers have taken 14 wickets at an average of 39.1 in Sharjah this season, compared to spinners taking six wickets at 52.0.Stats that matter When Narine has taken at least one wicket against the Delhi franchise, the Knight Riders have won 80% of their matches. And among the Capitals’ top seven that played their last game, no batsman has a particularly high strike rate in T20s against him. The strike rates of Dhawan (102), Iyer (100), Stoinis (86), Patel (73) and Hetmyer (64) are especially poor, while no one has topped 129. Since IPL 2018, of all his IPL opponents, Russell has scored the most runs (192) and has the second-highest strike rate (211) against the Delhi franchise. In all T20s since 2019, Russell also has the best ball-per-six ratio (6.1) and has struck the most sixes (142) too. The Capitals have a win percentage of 87.5% when Shaw scores 25 or more runs for them. The Capitals’ average score boosts up to 184 when he gets at least 25 runs. Compare that to a win percentage of 45% and an average score of 155 when he doesn’t get 25. If they play, it will be Mishra’s 150th IPL game and Rana’s 50th in the IPL and 100th overall in T20s. Cummins needs one wicket to 100 T20 strikes.

Tottenham now prepared to pay £38 million asking price for Euro 2024 star

Tottenham are now prepared to pay the £38 million asking price for a Euro 2024 star this summer, after pressing forward with intent "in recent days".

Spurs looking to sign new defenders this summer

With Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga, Ivan Perisic, Eric Dier and potentially Djed Spence out of the door already, Spurs are believed to be targeting defensive additions this summer, in an effort to hand Ange Postecoglou more strength in depth.

Sessegnon, Tanganga, Perisic and Dier are set to leave Spurs following the expiry of their contracts on June 30, while Spence is in talks over a permanent switch from Spurs to Genoa after spending the second half of 23/24 on loan there.

AC Milan are also actively pursuing a deal for Emerson Royal as well, and with the Brazilian looking likely to leave N17, Postecoglou's defence could look a bit different by the start of next campaign.

With Royal's move to Italy looking like a possibility, Tottenham could sign a new Pedro Porro back-up this summer, and it is believed that another centre-back is high up on their transfer agenda.

Spurs sealed a £25 million deal for Radu Dragusin in January, but it remains the case that they're after central defensive options to shore up Postecoglou's back line further.

The Australian, speaking to media earlier this year, even admitted that it would be one of their priorities for this window.

“If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at”, said Postecoglou on signing another centre-back. “With all these things, it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else.

"If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.

“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That is planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.”

Tottenham prepared to pay asking price for Calafiori

According to Tutto Juve, an update has emerged on their pursuit of Euro 2024 star Riccardo Calafiori. The Italy centre-back was called "extraordinary" by Gianluca Zambrotta for his performance against Albania in their opening group game, and was unfortunate for the ball to deflect off him and into the back of his own net during their 1-0 defeat to Spain on Thursday.

Tutto claim Spurs have moved to evaluate the conditions of a move for the 22-year-old "in recent days", and it is believed Tottenham are prepared to pay Bologna's £38 million asking price for Calafiori.

However, they still have some convincing to do on the player's side, as it is believed he prefers a move to Juventus right now.

Belinda Clark: Below-par Ellyse Perry will 'solve the problem in front of her'

The hamstring surgery that ended her T20 World Cup impacted Perry leading into the WBBL

Daniel Brettig24-Nov-2020

Belinda Clark believes that Ellyse Perry will be forced to rethink her approach to T20 cricket after her returns, with bat and ball, dropped off dramatically at the ongoing edition of the WBBL and the Sydney Sixers missed out on the tournament finals for the second year in a row.Clark pointed to how Perry has previously reinvented herself as a short-form batter in particular to align herself to the demands of her role in the T20I set-up over successive World Cup wins.”She’s already done it before,” Clark told ESPNcricinfo. “She’s very technically correct – she was batting down the order a bit in the shorter formats. But then she evolved her game and got herself to a point where she was a lot more attacking and a lot more risky in the way she went about things. She opened up whole different shots for herself.”Then she’s been going through a period where… you can’t stay on the top or be at the top of your game 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, it just doesn’t happen. She will go away, think about it, find a way, come back. But absolutely I’ll back her to solve the problem in front of her, because she’s done it before and she’ll continue to do it.”ALSO READ: Ellyse Perry is Australia’s greatest cricketer of the last 50 yearsPerry’s problems in the WBBL are best illustrated by how her pace bowling was targeted by opposition sides to cost the Sixers 8.25 runs per over across the tournament, a long way from her usual rate of a little more than five per over. At the same time, her batting was corralled into a strike rate of 96.53, comfortably down from recent years, even though she has averaged 48.75. Perry also missed out on the WBBL Team of the Tournament this year, a first. That said, the return from the hamstring surgery, which ended her T20 World Cup campaign, has undoubtedly impacted Perry leading into the WBBL.Clark, who over 118 ODIs compiled 4844 runs at 47.49 – she is still third on the all-time table, despite last playing in 2005 – while also notching the second-highest ODI score of all-time, an epic 229 not out in the 1997 World Cup, said that Perry’s battle this season was part of the kinds of evolutions that took place over long and elite careers across cricket.”This isn’t just a female athlete discussion either,” Clark said. “If you look at the methods, the technique of all of the players at the beginning of their career and at the end, you’ll see marked difference. Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, Steve Waugh, you name them, they’ve all evolved their game through a period of time when they’re representing their country, and that’s because they always want to be better so they keep finding ways.”If you think that you can stand still and just apply what you’ve got day in, day out and not continue to try to get better and evolve your game, you won’t last very long. Meg is a classic example of that time she spent out of the game with a shoulder injury and she’s come back with a whole range of other strings to her bow, Alyssa Healy is continually improving her game, her innings the other day was magnificent.”People don’t stand still, but you go back and watch Ricky Ponting’s first Test innings and his last one you’ll see some things that are idiosyncratic and the same, but other things that’ll be totally different, whether people are more conservative, more attacking, they’re playing certain shots, but that’s what sport’s all about, continually trying to get better.”Having announced she would step down from her role at Cricket Australia at the end of November, Clark has had time to reflect on some of the big moves in the women’s game over 20 years of her time in administration at women’s, high performance and community cricket roles. She noted that the decision to push T20 very strongly as the best format with which to grow the women’s game had been vindicated by how players had evolved to meet what she called the “constraints” of the shortest form.”The constraints of the game will dictate what the end product looks like, so if you can get the game to reward people taking risk, then the players will find a way and find their own way to make the most of that opportunity,” Clark said. “This game’s all about risk/reward and you need to stack the odds in the favour of those who take the risk, so there’s a whole range of playing conditions that were filtered around that concept.”I think what we’re seeing now is the players have adapted, they’re super skilful and they’re now playing a game that’s shown them they can evolve. If you went and changed all the rules tomorrow, it’ll take a little while but they’d find another way to make it entertaining and tip the odds in their favour. That’s the beauty of sport, you often don’t have to change too much and the players and coaching staff will respond with a tactical approach to overcome whatever you put in front of them.”I think it’s amazing where the game’s got to, but absolutely the constraints of the game have led the players to solve the problems in front of them.”

Wanted by Barcelona: Man Utd flop who earns more than Mainoo must be sold

This summer, plenty of movement will occur at Manchester United now that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS can get to work.

Incomings and outgoings are guaranteed to occur, but there’s a handful of players who won’t be going anywhere, including Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez.

jean-clair-todibo-lisandro-martinez-tottenham-opinion

The duo are integral parts of Erik ten Hag’s team, and they are two players that the Dutch coach will be desperate to build around next season.

However, with the fantastic duo in mind, let’s take a look at a Man Utd player who earns far more than them, despite not having a future at Old Trafford.

Jadon Sancho’s time is up at Man United

According to a report from The Mirror, Jadon Sancho could very well be on the move this summer, especially after Ten Hag remains at the club.

It’s said that United are ‘attempting to move him on’ before next season, but their £50m asking price is too steep for most clubs.

Jadon Sancho in action for Man United in the Premier League.

This means that the Red Devils may have to give in to a loan move, which is why Barcelona are interested in signing the English winger.

As per Spanish outlet Sport, via The Mirror, Sancho’s high wage demands could prove to be an issue even in the event of a loan deal.

What Man Utd pay Jadon Sancho

It’s fair to say that the signing of Sancho for £73m back in 2021 has been nothing short of a disaster, pretty much from day one.

However, it was last season when things took a turn for the worse, with the winger being banished from first-team training because of a social media post following his absence from the matchday squad against Arsenal.

Sancho’s refusal to apologise meant that he was sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund in January, where he helped his former aide reach the Champions League final.

Throughout his time back at Signal Iduna Park, the “disappointing” flop, as dubbed by football creator Liam Canning, played 21 times, scoring three goals and providing three assists in the process.

Nonetheless, despite making just 21 Premier League starts in the last two campaigns, Sancho is still one of the highest earners at Man United according to Capology.

As you can see, the 24-year-old is currently receiving an income of £195k-per-week, which equates to £10.1m per year without adding his bonuses of around £5.2m per year.

Jadon Sancho

Sancho is still contracted to the Red Devils until 2026, which puts them in a rather difficult position due to his salary being so high.

For context, his wage is £75k more per week than Martinez and almost ten times more than Mainoo’s £20k per week, and unlike Sancho, they will be at the club next season.

In the current United squad right now, only Antony and Marcus Rashford are on a higher wage than the number 25, which means the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho both earn significantly less.

Overall, the signing of Sancho has been a true howler from Man Utd, and the only way Ratcliffe can fix the situation is to let the attacker leave this summer.
