Pattinson is all-but locked in to play his first home Test since in nearly four years, on his home ground

It was a New Zealand surgeon who helped put James Pattinson back together and now the quick bowler will hope to show the full benefits of his career-saving treatment against the Trans-Tasman rivals.Barring a late injury or other unforeseen developments, Pattinson is all but locked in to play his first home Test in nearly four years, on his home ground at the MCG, as Josh Hazlewood’s replacement on Boxing Day. It follows his return to the Test scene during the Ashes, where he played two of the five Tests, at Edgbaston and Headingley, having gone under the knife in 2017 with the operation on his spine carried out by New Zealander Grahame Inglis. He has had to bide his time since and, had it not been for the injury to Hazlewood, faced the prospect of going through the season without a Test appearance. At the beginning of the summer, it was billed as a head-to-head with Mitchell Starc – who is now in career-best form – but Pattinson was ruled out of contention for the Brisbane Test against Pakistan due to his code of conduct suspension, following the slur against Cameron Gannon in the Sheffield Shield match at the MCG.Pattinson, who has played just 19 Tests since his debut in 2011, acknowledged he would learn from his errors but said he wouldn’t be toning down his aggression in the middle.”I just play cricket the way I know how to,” he said. “I suppose if that’s pushing the line, it’s pushing the line. I think when you go through setbacks like being suspended you have to think about that a little bit more, but I think I get the best out of my cricket when I’m getting up there and going 100%.”I’m not going to hold back, there’s a line, sometimes you cross it, and if I look back on it you learn from those mistakes and you try to address them.”When coach Justin Langer effectively rubberstamped Pattinson’s recall yesterday (and when the squad was named last week) he spoke of Pattinson’s hunger to make up for lost time. Pattinson reiterated it.”I’ve been through a lot of setbacks, the hunger has always been there, so hopefully if I’m rewarded with a game I can put in a good performance,” Pattinson said on Monday. “You always have to expect things could pass you by after being through so much disappointment with my back, it’s always in the back of your mind, but I like to keep a good mind on things and work one day at time.”Team-mates are looking forward to him translating his form in training to the middle. “Fingers crossed he gets through the next few days and gets all his bowling done in the middle, because he hasn’t been much fun to face in the nets,” Matthew Wade said. His home return against New Zealand brings him up against an opponent he has had considerable success against with 20 wickets at 17.70 in three Tests. He made his debut against them at the Gabba in 2011, where he took 5 for 27 in the second innings, which was followed by another five-for in the first innings of the next match in Hobart, although that was a Test Australia would go on to lose by seven runs.During the Ashes, he formed pace attacks alongside Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Peter Siddle, but this Boxing Day Test will be first time he makes a trio with Pat Cummins and Starc – the three fastest bowlers currently in contention for the Test side.”I’m pretty excited by the opportunity,” Pattinson said. “Through my whole career I’ve played a lot of cricket with Patty and Mitch and a lot against them in under-age stuff, so to hopefully get a chance to play for them for Australia is pretty exciting.”Following his five wickets in the two Ashes Tests, Pattinson has taken 14 Sheffield Shield scalps at 28.64 this season and one of his outings was on the MCG pitch for the match against Queensland, which was highly rated and is hoped will be the basis for the Test strip after concerns following the abandonment earlier this month.”It was a good cricket wicket, we got a result late on day four which is great,” he said. “Both teams were in with a chance the whole game. There was a bit of movement for the bowlers and you could score runs as well. Hopefully it’s an exciting wicket.”

Still, with Tamim Iqbal back from a break, the batting looks strong enough to test the hosts

Big pictureBangladesh and Pakistan meet each other for their first Test in five years at a time when both teams are at a crossroads. Bangladesh have had a woeful 2019 and are desperate to start off the new year with an improved performance. Pakistan, on the other hand, have just broken through by playing their first Test at home since 2009, and are also looking to establish themselves for the rest of 2020.Their 263-run win over Sri Lanka in their last Test in December saw plenty of individual performances among batsmen and bowlers. Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Abbas and Naseem Shah all picked up wickets while there were hundreds for Shan Masood, Abid Ali, captain Azhar Ali and Babar Azam. It also involved a major fightback, which would be the most appeasing factor for Misbah-ul-Haq who is also trying to settle on his dual role of team coach and chief selector.Pakistan’s bowling attack is their strength, led by the steady and accurate Abbas who opens the bowling with Afridi. Naseem brings extra pace and Yasir Shah adds more experience to the bowling attack, and will be especially handy on a pitch which may be batting-friendly for most of the Test match.Bangladesh also don’t have a great record against legspin, which is just one of their many problems. They lost each of the five Tests they played in 2019. They are without two of their best cricketers on this tour. And they have to operate with the worst pace bowling attack in recent memory. And yet, all of this could still an opportunity. Tamim Iqbal has returned to the Test side, and having scored a record-breaking triple-hundred in a first-class game last week, he will bring experience and confidence to the Bangladesh top-order. And sure, they are without Mushfiqur Rahim who held the middle order firmly for the last nine years, but that gives Mominul Haque, in his second series as Test captain, a chance to make a statement about his leadership quality. It is also also a chance for Mohammad Mithun, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Liton Das to cement their spot.Mominul Haque bats in the Rawalpindi nets
While there are opportunities available for the batsmen, Bangladesh’s biggest concern is their bowling attack. Taijul Islam is their most skilled bowler, while Abu Jayed offers a bit of control. Ebadot Hossain has often blown hot and cold, but is said to be improving since the BPL and to round off, the team management is likely to pick Rubel Hossain, who has the all-time worst bowling average for anyone who has bowled more than 3,000 balls in Tests, for his first game in 18 months.Bangladesh will be very eager to make the right turn at this crossroads.Form guidePakistan WDLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first) Bangladesh LLLLL In the spotlightAbid Ali easily qualifies for one of the best debuts of 2019, having struck two centuries in his first three Test innings. Both those knocks were against Sri Lanka in Pakistan’s last series, where he batted so sensibly to get his Test career off to a superb start. Now, however, there will be added expectation on the newcomer, which is only natural in a player’s second series.Mominul Haque had a baptism of fire in India where he made his captaincy debut. He made only 44 runs in four innings, including his first pair, in the Kolkata Test. But with the wretched 2019 over, Mominul has a chance to make a fresh start as he looks to salvage a Test side also lacking in form.Abid Ali celebrates his hundred•Associated Press
Team newsPakistan have plenty of options in their bowling line-up after they included offspinner Bilal Asif and allrounder Faheem Ashraf but they probably won’t be tempted to change a winning combination.Pakistan (likely): 1 Shan Masood, 2 Abid Ali, 3 Azhar Ali (capt), 4 Babar Azam, 5 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 6 Haris Sohail, 7 Asad Shafiq, 8 Yasir Shah, 9 Mohammad Abbas, 10 Naseem Shah, 11 Shaheen AfridiBangladesh coach Russell Domingo revealed his top seven in the departure press conference in Dhaka. Depending on how they view the Rawalpindi pitch on the day before the Test, they would either go for a three-man pace attack, or both spinners – Taijul and Nayeem Hassan.Bangladesh (likely): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Saif Hassan, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Mominul Haque (capt), 5 Mohammad Mithun, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Liton Das (wk), 8 Taijul Islam, 9 Rubel Hossain, 10 Abu Jayed, 11 Ebadot HossainPitch and conditionsThe forecast for these five days is better than December when most of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka game was washed out. The pitch is likely to favour the batsmen although Bangladesh are anticipating a lot more bounce than they get at home.Stats and Trivia Pakistan have not won a Test in Rawalpindi for 23 years, having lost three of the last four to Australia (1998), Sri Lanka (2000) and India (2004). The last Test match between Bangladesh and Pakistan in Pakistan took place more than 16 years ago and it was a heart-breaker for Bangladesh. Inzamam-ul-Haq maneuvered the home side to a one-wicket win in Multan.
It's set to be quite the shake-up at Anfield this summer and Liverpool's transfer business may only add to that, with one potential deal likely to cause quite the stir in the Premier League.
Liverpool transfer news
Before anything, the Reds must secure their replacement for Jurgen Klopp of course, with Ruben Amorim currently the leading candidate and looking increasingly likely to take up the almost impossible task of replacing a Liverpool legend this summer. Once that move is sealed, then Liverpool's summer plans will become that much clearer.
Liverpool now eyeing move to sign "brilliant" Premier League star to replace Salah
The Egyptian could leave the Reds this summer…
ByTom Cunningham Apr 19, 2024
That doesn't mean the rumour mill hasn't already started, however, with reports already linking the Merseyside club with the likes of Ousmane Diomande. Michael Edwards may hope that the potential appointment of Amorim goes a long way in sealing any deals for such players, given that the Sporting CP defender knows all about starring under the manager.
Edwards could also look to welcome some more familiar faces in the summer window with a replacement for Joel Matip likely to be high up on the priority list. The experienced defender is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season when his current contract expires, leaving a space that the Reds could fill with a Premier League rival.
According to Dean Jones for GiveMeSport, Liverpool are eyeing a move to sign Levi Colwill from Chelsea this summer in what could be one of the shocks of the transfer window. The Blues are reportedly braced for offers amid interest in their young defender from both Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain and could now see Colwill depart.
Levi Colwill
The move could be a long time coming for Liverpool too, given that Klopp reportedly held secret talks to sign Colwill last year, before ultimately failing to secure his signature. It remains to be seen how much Chelsea demand for the England international this summer, but Liverpool will at least be aware of Colwill's reported £100k per-week salary.
"Fantastic" Colwill could realise full potential at Liverpool
After an excellent loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion last season, many expected Colwill to step up even further at Stamford Bridge this season. But that has not always been the case.
The defender has been part of another season to forget for the Blues, who are once again languishing in mid-table and unlikely to qualify for European football once again but has still shown glimpses of his talent nonetheless.

Liverpool will still be well aware of Colwill's quality, however, after watching him keep Diogo Jota quiet on the goalscoring front in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the season. It's also quality that Mauricio Pochettino knows all about, previously telling Chelsea's official website: "At the moment I need to see him and get to know him better. He is a fantastic talent of course."
In what could be quite the move, Liverpool may help Colwill realise his full potential over the chaos that is currently Stamford Bridge, making this one to watch.

The Mumbai Indians players pose with the IPL 2019 trophy•BCCI
IPL 2020 has been deferred until April 15 following the global concern over the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) outbreak. ESPNcricinfo understands that if the situation is safe for the IPL to start in mid-April, the new window for the tournament is likely to be April 16 to June 5.The decision to postpone the tournament, which was scheduled to start on March 29, was taken by the BCCI top brass led by its president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah and top management of the IPL in the wake of the advice given by various arms of the Indian government. The IPL sent the communication to all eight franchises on Friday, saying it would meet the owners on Saturday in person in Mumbai to further debrief on the matter. In its statement announcing the decision on Friday afternoon, the BCCI said it was “suspending” the IPL until April 15 as a “precautionary measure” against the coronavirus. “The BCCI is concerned and sensitive about all its stakeholders, and public health in general, and it is taking all necessary steps to ensure that, all people related to IPL including fans have a safe cricketing experience,” the release said. “The BCCI will work closely with the Government of India along with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and all other relevant Central and State Government departments in this regard.”The IPL now joins a host of high-profile sporting events including the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League, the NBA and the ATP Tour to have been affected by COVID-19 (novel coronavirus), a respiratory illness that was declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organistion (WHO) this week. With the outbreak rapidly escalating across the globe the Indian government has placed severe travel restrictions for people traveling in as well out of India. With the coronavirus being highly contagious and spread through contact, the government said sporting organisations would need to adhere to Health Ministry’s guidelines to avoid mass gatherings.ESPNcricinfo had earlier reported the possibility of the IPL being a severely restricted tournament – with at least some part of it being played to empty stands – because of the pandemic. While the central sports ministry had said it would not stop sporting events from taking place as long as they adhered strictly to government guidelines discouraging mass gatherings, the external affairs (foreign) ministry had said that its advice was to not go ahead with the tournament at this time, but left the decision to the organisers. In the end the BCCI was left with not much choice and was forced to change its initial stance of business-as usual when Ganguly had said the IPL was on and the board was taking all necessary precautions. However, the pressure on the BCCI was building up as state governments across India including those of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab and Delhi on Friday insisting that they would not allow mass gatherings, something an IPL match would easily attract. On the eve of the India-South Africa ODI series opener, on March 11, the BCCI shared its first public statement on the coronavirus saying a list of dos-and-don’ts were distributed to all stakeholders including the players who had been asked not to shake hands or use third-party phones to take selfies during interactions with the fans.Later on Friday, it was confirmed that the final two ODIs of the South Africa series, in Lucknow (March 15) and Kolkata (March 18) would not be played for the same reasons. Before arriving at the decision to defer the tournament, the IPL is understood to have consulted at least some of the franchises for their views. As far as the franchises were concerned they wanted the tournament to go ahead in whatever form even if behind closed doors. One franchise chief executive said an option that was considered, and, which might still be in play if the tournament starts in April, is to allow no spectators during the first few weeks of the tournament and then upon review resume ticket sales.

Few would deny West Ham United of their pride in yielding a range of high-level quality in their senior squad, but this collection of talented footballers has not been in concert of late and David Moyes' future as manager is now looking uncertain.
Moyes has done a sensational job at the London Stadium and has cemented his legacy after winning the Europa Conference League trophy last season but given that he's out of contract this summer it seems like his time in the dugout has reached a natural conclusion.
West Ham manager David Moyes.
It's a critical juncture in West Ham's journey, blessed with such quality but ending a three-year streak in European competition. Securing the perfect successor is pivotal, should the 61-year-old Scotsman indeed leave this summer.
West Ham's search for a manager
Hammers sporting director Tim Steidten had drawn up a longlist of figures to replace Moyes in the dugout but, as yet, nothing concrete has materialised following Ruben Amorim's face-to-face meeting in east London last week – something the Sporting Lisbon boss later admitted was "a mistake".
Julen Lopetegui has also been of interest but Serie A club AC Milan appear to have a foothold in that race, which could see West Ham focus their pursuit on a dream alternative in Lille manager Paulo Fonseca.
Multiple reports, including a recent revelation from Foot Mercato, suggest that Steidten is hoping to advance interest in the Portuguese, though with Marseille also pushing for a deal, swiftness is needed.
Paulo Fonseca's managerial style
Fonseca is an experienced manager with an attractive playing style that could provide West Ham supporters with the tactical brand that has been craved.
Moyes, while raining success on the east London outfit, has divided opinion with his perceived negative tactics – though, be that as it may, he has gifted the club three successive seasons on the continent, as well as winning European silverware in emphatic circumstances.
Lille manager Paulo Fonseca.
The 51-year-old Fonseca won a wealth of silverware with Shakhtar Donetsk but hasn't gleaned any major honours in a top-five European league. Nonetheless, he has impressed with his playing style in France after leaving Roma in high regard, having won the fans over with his football, beset with ageing players and a testing situation relating to the coronavirus pandemic and a change of ownership that made true success difficult.
Arriving at Lille in 2022, Fonseca has guided Les Dogues back to a position of comparative stability and success after an acute nosedive following the stunning Ligue 1 title triumph of 2020/21, recording a fifth-place finish last year and presently perching in fourth.
Out of contract this summer, West Ham really do have a fantastic opportunity to swoop in and land their man, albeit facing fierce competition for his services.
Why Paulo Fonseca is perfect for West Ham
It would be something of a gamble to bring Fonseca to West Ham but his principal 4-2-3-1 formation aligns with the Irons' current set-up, with his desire to dominate possession and take initiative in attacking sequences certainly falling into the ballpark that the general fanbase wishes to see instilled into the first team.
Fonseca's tactical flexibility is one of his sterling attributes as a manager and he has demonstrated this throughout his career thus far, with his sharp mind and clear vision possibly even convincing Lucas Paqueta to remain at the London Stadium next season.
Much has been said of Paqueta's future with West Ham and with Manchester City pursuing the Brazilian last summer, offering £85m before an FA betting investigation halted their advances, his top-level quality was rubber-stamped.
Signed for West Ham from Lyon for a club-record £51m fee in 2022, Paqueta has been exceptional in his multi-layered role, scoring 13 goals and supplying 14 assists across 81 appearances and being praised for his "mind-boggling" quality by former teammate Declan Rice.
Ranking among the top 10% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for passes attempted, the top 8% for progressive passes, the top 2% for tackles, the top 17% for interceptions, the top 15% for clearances and the top 4% for aerial duels won per 90, as per FBref, Paqueta is truly one of the most dynamic and hard-working around.
He might even be irreplaceable for West Ham, and every option must be exhausted in convincing the player to remain at the club, enticing him with an enterprising new style of play and a new lease of life as the beating heart of the project.

Given that Romano remarked that Fonseca is "perfect in the dressing room", he might just have the man-management skills and promise of a healthy and providential atmosphere that could convince Paqueta to remain at his current stomping ground, where he has established himself as a major player.
With the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus unleashed in a more attacking system, Paqueta's string-pulling expertise would ensure that the talented West Ham squad rises to a new level entirely.
Convincing him to reject the likely interest of Manchester City this summer will be difficult – especially if Pep Guardiola's side meet his £85m release clause – but he could be the key to ensuring this talented team's meteoric rise does not fizzle out, should Moyes part ways in east London.
West Ham could take Kudus to new heights with "perfect" Amorim alternative
This tactician would be a fantastic alternative to Ruben Amorim
