Newcastle could rue selling £15m star who’s now outscoring Wilson

Newcastle United have made a number of eye-catching and big-money signings since PIF officially completed their takeover of the club from Mike Ashley back in October 2021.

Eddie Howe was quickly appointed as the team's new head coach, after Steve Bruce was relieved of his duties, and the English tactician was allowed to splash the cash in his first transfer window in charge.

In January 2022, the former Bournemouth manager swooped to sign Matt Targett on loan, and Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Chris Wood, and Bruno Guimaraes on permanent deals in an attempt to propel his side up the table.

The rest, as they say, is history as the Magpies went on to achieve survival and then pushed on – with the help of signings like Sven Botman and Alexander Isak – to qualify for the Champions League the following season.

Of that initial raft of signings under PIF and Howe, Wood is the only player no longer at the club as Trippier, Burn, and Guimaraes remain key players, and Targett is still on the books.

The Newcastle boss could, however, rue cashing in on the New Zealand international as he has been in terrific form in the Premier League this season, outscoring current Toon star Callum Wilson.

How much Newcastle sold Chris Wood for

Nottingham Forest initially signed the attacker on loan in January of last year – 12 months on from his move to St. James' Park – with an obligation to make it permanent for £15m in the summer.

That came after Newcastle had paid a staggering £25m to sign him from Premier League rivals Burnley back in 2023, to bolster their strikeforce at the time.

He arrived as a proven scorer in the top-flight, with a return of 49 goals in 144 league appearances for the Clarets, but could only muster up two goals in 17 matches and 15 starts for the Magpies during the second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

Wood then spent the first half of the following season with Newcastle and produced two goals in four starts and 18 appearances in total in the Premier League.

Howe then decided to ditch the former Burnley star midway through the 2022/23 campaign by selling him – via an initial loan spell – to Nottingham Forest, after a return of four goals in 19 top-flight starts in one year on Tyneside.

His current form for the Tricky Trees may be making the Magpies regret that decision, as he has outscored Wilson in all competitions this term.

Callum Wilson's season in numbers

The England international came into this season off the back of a terrific return of 18 goals and five assists in 36 matches for Newcastle in all competitions last term.

His form has dropped off slightly during the current campaign, however, as the 32-year-old number nine has plundered eight goals and one assist in 22 games in all competitions.

Callum Wilson.

The former Bournemouth star has not been at his clinical best in front of goal. He has scored seven goals from an xG (Expected Goals) of 7.35 across 16 outings in the Premier League, after 18 goals from 17.49 xG last season.

Wilson has missed six 'big chances' in the division this season as he has been wasteful with the opportunities that have come his way at times.

As you can see in the table above, injuries have played their part in Wilson's struggles as the centre-forward has already missed 23 games and counting through injury this season.

His consistent availability issues appear to have finally caught up with him as the striker has not been a reliable performer for Howe and Newcastle during the current campaign, in terms of both his availability and his finishing in the final third.

Despite his struggles, however, only Anthony Gordon (ten) and Isak (16) have scored more goals for the Magpies in all competitions, which suggests that the English boss does not have a plethora of regular scorers available to him at this moment in time.

Chris Wood's goalscoring form for Forest

The 32-year-old star, who is the same age as Wilson, has been in terrific form in front of goal for Steve Cooper and Nuno Espirito Santo this term.

He has only missed eight games through injury all season, less than half as many as the Newcastle striker, and has only been absent for 20 matches since the start of the 2021/22 campaign, which shows that he is reliable when it comes to availability.

Wood has also been reliable at the top end of the pitch for Forest this term, with a return of ten goals and one assist in all competitions for the club.

The former Leeds marksman has produced nine goals and one assist in 11 Premier League starts and 22 appearances in total throughout the season, with those nine strikes coming from an xG of 6.04.

Three of those goals, of course, came in a 3-1 win for Forest against Newcastle at St. James' Park earlier this season, as the impressive target man scored with all three of his shots in the match.

As you can see in the table above, Wood has outperformed Wilson in front of goal this season by scoring more goals from less xG, along with four fewer 'big chances' missed, whilst they have both only assisted one goal.

Howe could, therefore, rue selling the New Zealand international as the Magpies boss could have done with that level of scoring power this season, given the English forward's struggles both on and off the pitch with form and injury.

Newcastle will now be hoping that Wilson can return from his current issue and get back to his best on Tyneside to ensure that the club do not continue to look back on their £15m sale of Wood with regret.

Bangladesh Women have made sweeping changes to their T20I squad for the 13th South Asian Games to be held in Nepal in December. Puja Chakravorthy and Rabeya have earned their maiden call-ups, while allrounder Rumana Ahmed, who had returned as captain for the ODIs against Pakistan earlier this month, has been left out. The other notable absentees include Panna Ghosh – who has been named as one of the standbys – and Lata Mondal and Sharmin Sultana.Fahima Khatun, Nahida Akter and Murshida Khatun, Ritu Moni and Shobnam Mostary have returned to the side. They all were part of Bangladesh’s win in the final of the women’s T20 qualifiers against Thailand in September but were left out of the 15-member squad for the Pakistan tour, being named as standbys then. While Bangladesh were whitewashed in the three-match T20I series against Pakistan, Rumana played a crucial role in helping Bangladesh tie the ODI series 1-1 by scoring 31 and picking up three wickets in the second match in Lahore. Sultana had played just the first ODI, while Ghosh and Mondal, who played all the five limited-overs games, had a lukewarm series. Sanjida Aker Meghla, Sharmin Akhter, Ekka Mollik are the other absentees from that squad. The South Asian Games tournament is scheduled to be played from December 1 to 10 in Kathmandu and Pokhara, with Bangladesh set to play their first match against Maldives on opening day.Squad: Salma Khatun, Nigar Sultana Joty, Jahanara Alam, Ayesha Rahman, Fargana Haque, Murshida Khatun, Sanjida Islam, Shobnam Mostary, Fahima Khatun, Shamima Sultana, Nahida Akhter, Kadija-Tu-Kubra, Ritu Moni, Puja Chakravorthy, Rabeya

Sheffield Wednesday could land Gregory replacement by signing EFL starlet

Going into the International break off the back of two defeats to high-flying Leeds United and Ipswich Town – with the 6-0 loss at Portman Road obviously stinging more – Danny Rohl will now hope his Sheffield Wednesday players are re-energised and refocused for the task of attempting to stay up in the Championship once more.

There'll be some obvious pride from an Owls perspective at the number of players who played for their countries over the time off too, including hot prospect Bailey Cadamarteri who scored for the England U19s.

Rohl and Co will be delighted at the constant progression they're seeing from the teenage striker, who has four goals in the senior fold this season for the relegation-threatened Owls also.

The success story of Cadamarteri could well impact Wednesday's transfer business therefore, with the South Yorkshire giants taking a shining to his young trialist who could be signed permanently down the line.

Sheffield Wednesday transfer news

According to a report from Sheffield Star journalist Joe Crann late last week, the Owls are very much keen on 19-year-old trialist James Collins who had been making a splash in the youth circles at Watford before being taken on at Hillsborough.

Only joining the youth set-up at the Hornets last year from non-league Hertford Town, a move for the highly regarded striker could see Wednesday sign yet another young and fresh centre-forward in the mould of Cadamarteri.

Scoring goals regularly for Watford at both U18 and U21 level – with his last flurry of goals coming against Ipswich Town just this month – Collins was even gifted a spot on the Hertfordshire side's bench against Stoke City earlier this campaign when Valerien Ismael was still present in the Vicarage Road hot-seat.

With Lee Gregory's contract expiring this summer, and the Owls man being 35 years of age, it could well be a case of out with the old and in with the new if Collins impresses enough to be rewarded with a permanent deal at Hillsborough.

James Collins could be Lee Gregory's replacement

Gregory has barely featured under Rohl since the German manager took over the reins last October, making just one brief appearance to date under the current Wednesday boss against Cardiff City in December.

Therefore, with this development emerging that a new kid could soon be on the block in a permanent deal, this could give Rohl grounds to get rid of the former Millwall man for good after failing to ever really utilise him since coming into the Owls.

Gregory won't be the only ageing member of the Wednesday squad who will be fearing for their future in South Yorkshire, with the likes of Will Vaulks and Liam Palmer's contracts also up for discussion at the conclusion of the campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday striker Lee Gregory.

Wednesday could well view the breakout success of Cadamarteri as the starting point that leads to a new direction at the club, helped further by young trialist Collins potentially going on to have a far more important role in the Owls team soon if he is kept around past his trial period at the expense of Watford.

The night everything changed for Deepak Chahar

In an inexperienced attack, Chahar had to take on a new role and with the series on the line he delivered a record-breaking performance

Karthik Krishnaswamy10-Nov-20196:56

Laxman: Chahar more versatile with his variations now

New-ball swing is what Deepak Chahar is known for. It’s the skill that has earned him a place in India’s T20I team.New-ball swing has defined Chahar to the extent that 493 of the 616 balls – that’s 80% – he has bowled for Chennai Super Kings have been in the powerplay overs. His IPL captain, MS Dhoni, often gets him to bowl three straight overs in the first six. Before Sunday’s game against Bangladesh in Nagpur, Chahar had bowled a similar proportion of his deliveries in the powerplay (96 out of 126, or 76%) for India as well. His most memorable performance in six T20Is had been a three-wicket haul against West Indies in Guyana, a trademark display of swerve and control with the new ball.On Sunday night, everything changed.India were defending 174 in dewy conditions, with an inexperienced attack and no sixth bowler. Their fifth bowler was Shivam Dube, a seam-bowling allrounder known more for his batting and playing only his third T20I. In the circumstances, Chahar was one of the two “senior” members of the bowling attack alongside legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal.ALSO READ: Chahar’s best is also world’s best in men’s T20IsGiven the composition of the attack, Chahar couldn’t slot into his usual role of powerplay specialist. His captain Rohit Sharma told him he would have a more flexible role.”The plan was that I would get the responsibility of bowling the main overs,” Chahar said during the post-match presentation. “Usually I bowl with the new ball, but Rohit said I’ll bowl the crucial overs today, whenever the team needed me to bowl. I’m happy that the management gave me this responsibility on this stage.”Given the amount of dew around – towels were being employed between deliveries even during India’s innings – swing was out of the picture. In any case, Chahar only got one over in the powerplay. It was a challenge for him to show he had other tricks up his sleeve.Deepak Chahar was the man of the moment•BCCI

He came out of the challenge with the best figures in T20I history. Big wicket hauls in T20 cricket can be misleading, particularly when they involve clusters of tail-end dismissals; the hat-trick that ended Bangladesh’s innings will go into all the headlines, but Chahar’s best work came before that. The most impressive feature of his display was the control he showed over his variations. We’ve seen his knuckle ball and slower bouncer in the past, but we haven’t necessarily seen him execute them so well with a wet ball.”The ball was wet, which made it difficult,” Chahar said in an interview with Chahal on . “But I have played so much in Chennai that I am used to it. In Chennai, there is a lot of dew and the humidity means you sweat a lot too. So I know how to keep my hands clean, use a bit of dirt to dry my hands, so playing in Chennai helped me a lot today.”Chahar understood that he could make life difficult for the batsmen by bowling into the surface on a slightly two-paced pitch, and as a consequence, 11 of his 20 balls were pitched either short or short of a good length, according to ESPNcricinfo’s data. Some of these balls skidded through, some of them gripped and slowed down, and Bangladesh’s batsmen never looked in control against this mode of attack.Chahar stayed away from the fuller lengths, by and large, and as a result didn’t bowl a single full-toss on a day when the other fast bowlers, from both sides, sent down ten between them. When he did bowl full, however, Chahar made a big impact. There was the wide-ish tempter, slanting across the left-handed Soumya Sarkar and landing just short of a driving length, that resulted in a catch to mid-off in his first over, the third of Bangladesh’s innings. There was the yorker to end Bangladesh’s innings and complete Chahar’s hat-trick. And in between, there was the ball that dismissed Mohammad Mithun in a match-turning 13th over. The over began with Bangladesh favourites to win, needing 69 from 48 balls with two set batsmen at the crease and eight wickets in hand. Mohammad Naim had taken Dube’s first two overs apart, and had shown brilliant footwork to rattle the experienced Chahal, whose figures at that stage read 3-0-38-0. India needed someone to give them some control, and Rohit threw the ball to Chahar. He responded brilliantly. Chahar beat Mithun twice in four balls with short-of-a-length cutters that skidded through low. Then, off the last ball of the over, he made clever use of the crease, going close to the stumps in order to create an angle away from the right-hander. Out came a knuckle ball floating away from off stump. Mithun had to reach out towards the ball and generate all the power himself, and there was no way he was going to clear the off-side boundary on one of the largest outfields in the country. That delivery ended a 98-run stand for the third wicket. That over ended with Chahar’s figures reading 2-0-3-3. Then Mushfiqur Rahim, trying to dab Dube to third man to get off the mark, fell off the first ball of the next over. The match had turned in the space of two balls.

Ange without Tottenham star vs Nottingham Forest after injury news

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou will be forced to cope without a star player against Nottingham Forest after the latest injury news.

Tottenham vs Nottingham Forest – preview

The Lilywhites host Nuno Espirito Santo's side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend, with Spurs looking to seal a place in the top four and cap off what has been a terrific debut season in the dugout for Postecoglou.

Forest, meanwhile, are firmly in a battle to avoid the drop and could well go down if their results don't undergo a serious improvement soon.

On paper, you'd back Spurs to win this contest comfortably, but the unpredictable nature of the Premier League means you cannot rule out anything happening – with Nuno looking to upset the apple cart and frustrate a club who unceremoniously sacked him after just a few months.

Postecoglou, though, remains adamant that a place in the top four and subsequent Champions League qualification won't define Tottenham's season.

“It's pretty simple. I don’t think top four is the ambition," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's chase for top four.

"I get that top four means Champions League football, so there is a reward there, and that’s a significant reward and something you should strive for. My position on it is not so much, particularly this year, where we finish, it’s what kind of team we are, because if we finish fourth and we’re 25 points off the top, I’m not sure that’s the kind of trajectory we want to be on.

Ange Postecoglou

“It’s part of making sure that we’re all focussed on what the ultimate ambition is. If we finish fourth this year, what it does show is that we’re progressing and we’ve made improvements, but that’s not the end goal. That’s why, for me, it’s much more important how we play between now and the end of the year, and how we finish. Then, we assess things. If we finish fourth and I feel we’ve made some progress and we’re set up for next year, then I’ll be pleased with that.”

Of course, the riches of Champions League football will be a major help for Tottenham in the transfer market, with technical director Johan Lange looking to strengthen multiple areas of the Spurs squad.

While it is not the end goal, securing a place in Europe next year is vitally important, and their result against Forest today will go a long way in determining their success in the race.

Ange without "important" Tottenham star against Forest

Unfortunately for Postecoglou, he'll have to cope without the club's second top scorer this season, Richarlison. The Brazilian remains out through injury, as Tottenham's head coach explained on Friday, so Postecoglou will be without Richarlison against Forest.

“The only one is Richy. He’s had a bit of a niggle with his knee these last few weeks. We figured it is kind of best he takes his weekend off and gets ready for Newcastle next.”

His 10 league goals have been a major contributor this season, so he will be a sore miss, with Postecoglou previously calling him "important".
