CPL keen to host women's T20 tournament

The tournament’s chief operating officer said it was not a question of “if” but “when”.

Britney Cooper celebrates her half-century•AFP

There could be Women’s Caribbean Premier League on the cricket calendar in the near future with the tournament’s chief operating officer indicating it is not a question of “if” but “when”.Pete Russell was responding to questions raised by West Indies batsman Britney Cooper after her team was knocked out in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, when she claimed they could have done better if they could also play as many matches a year as some of the more fancied teams like Australia, England and India.”We need people in the CPL or corporate sponsors to back us and give us that push. We can’t do it all by ourselves. We need more. We need a mini-CPL,” she said. The 2018 edition was the first standalone Women’s T20 World Cup hosted by the ICC, attracting promising audience numbers across three venues in Guyana, St. Lucia and Antigua. There is opportunity to ride on that and Russell is keen to do so. In fact, last year, he said the CPL and Cricket West Indies had held “informal” talks about holding a franchise T20 tournament for women.”We have already discussed the feasibility of a women’s tournament with CWI or a women’s exhibition match, after the 2017 tournament, and have been discussing how we can make it work since then,” Russell told . “Any cricket tournament is a huge logistical challenge to arrange and there are a lot of questions that would need to be answered before we could commit to going ahead. But it is something that we are keen to have as part of the CPL programme, it is not question of ‘if’ it is a question of ‘when’.”Currently the CPL only has the rights to host the men’s tournament and to organise a women’s version, a separate license needs to be procured by CWI. That makes the board the final authority on this issue and it remains open to investing in women’s T20s, especially keeping in mind its popularity.West Indies women already have two domestic T20 tournaments in place – the CWI Regional Women’s Twenty20 Championship, and a franchise league in Trinidad and Tobago, called the Courts T20 Women’s Grand Slam Tournament, which had more than 10 regular members of the national side in action this July.It is also understood that the CPL had invited West Indies women to play an exhibition T20 ahead of the men’s Eliminator in September. However, there were logistical issues considering they were playing a bilateral series against South Africa at the time. It is for the same reason a mini Women’s CPL, alongside the men’s edition, is unlikely, at least in 2019. West Indies women will be involved in a bilateral series with Australia in August-September. In any case, it is learnt the CWI wants a standalone women’s T20 tournament along the lines of Big Bash League, which has proven to be a success in Australia.Russell is aware of the challenges in play but has no second thoughts about investing in women’s cricket. “We don’t see it as a risk, but we have shown over the last six years that we are willing to invest in cricket across the region. It is very early days in these discussions and we have a lot of hoops to jump through before this becomes a reality, but we have seen over the last few weeks just how fast the women’s game is growing and we would love to be a part of its ongoing success.”

Huge money: Aston Villa transfer update on future of "underrated" player

Aston Villa have made an excellent start to the Premier League campaign and new information has now emerged about some potential transfer activity at Villa Park in January.

Aston Villa prepare for Manchester City…

Last weekend, Villa salvaged a point in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on the South Coast courtesy of a last-minute header from Ollie Watkins, leaving the Villans in the top four with 29 points from their 14 matches played so far.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Villans boss Emery complimented his side's resilience at the Vitality Stadium and urged them to go again against Manchester City on Wednesday, saying:

"In 90 minutes with the way we played and the demands they made of us, I think it’s a good point. We have to accept it and continue trying to build a team. We are in our process and now we have 29 points. We were losing 2-1 at the end and we drew.

"It’s important to feel it’s a good point. We’re thankful to our supporters for being here with us, and now we’re excited to play again on Wednesday at home with them (Manchester City), trying to continue being strong like we are."

Emery now eyeing "extraordinary" ace for Aston Villa after previous interest

Aston Villa look to have identified a key target heading into the January transfer window…

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 5, 2023

Heading into their midweek clash against the Citizens, Emery's men are in a positive vein of form, winning four of their last five matches in all competitions. In all likelihood, Manchester City will provide the toughest test that the Villans have faced on home soil this campaign; nevertheless, they will leapfrog their opponents by taking maximum points from the affair.

Looking ahead to January, fresh information has come to light involving the future of one of Aston Villa's key players, according to a recent report.

Aston Villa set enormous Douglas Luiz asking price

According to FootballTransfers reporter Steve Kay, Aston Villa have now set a whopping £110 million price tag for midfielder Douglas Luiz amid interest in his services from elsewhere, with NSWE seemingly pulling no punches when it comes to the future of their star midfielder.

Arsenal have been keen admirers of the Brazil international for a long time and will once again attempt to firm up their attraction towards Luiz come January; nevertheless, they will now need to shell out more than the £105 million they paid to sign Declan Rice from West Ham United in the summer window.

Douglas Luiz celebrates for Aston Villa

This term, the 25-year-old has been in brilliant form for the Villans, registering six goals and four assists from 22 appearances in all competitions (Luiz statistics – Transfermarkt).

Pundit Paul Merson has clearly been impressed by his exploits at the heart of Emery's midfield, labelling him an "underrated" player on social media platform X.

Averaging a WhoScored match rating of 7.22/10 for his performances in the Premier League this campaign, Aston Villa are well within their rights to demand a colossal fee for Luiz due to his consistent form (Luiz statistics – WhoScored).

Andy Robertson injury update: Liverpool star on track for January return

Liverpool have been handed a huge boost after learning that one of their injured players is set to return to action next month, according to a fresh report that has emerged.

Liverpool injuries

The Reds currently have Joel Matip, Diogo Jota, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago Alcantara and Alexis Mac Allister all out on the sidelines with their own respective problems as it stands, but the club are slowly starting to get some of their longer-term absentees back.

According to The Echo, Jurgen Klopp will have Mac Allister and Jota back at his disposal before Christmas, while Thiago and Bajcetic are set to return to the squad at the start of next year, and they aren’t the only ones who will soon be available again.

Back in October, Andrew Robertson dislocated his shoulder while representing Scotland on international duty, and the injury that he sustained required him to have immediate surgery, meaning that he hasn’t been able to feature since in the Premier League.

The Merseyside left-back has been using his time in the treatment room to recover and slowly work his way back to full fitness, and if the following update is to be believed, the 29-year-old isn’t far away from being reintroduced to supporters at Anfield.

Robertson set to return in January

According to The Daily Mail, Robertson will be back in January having made good progress in his rehabilitation programme at Liverpool which will be music to the ears of everyone at the club.

"Andy Robertson is on schedule to be fit to return to first-team action next month, with the full-back already back on the training pitch running as he steps up his recovery from a dislocated shoulder suffered when on camp with Scotland.

"The Scotsman is not yet involved in contact training but is doing running work on the grass for fitness. With it being a shoulder injury, Robertson could get back to general fitness work fairly early but cannot risk his arm getting clattered in a 50-50 on the training pitch."

Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson.

In the Premier League, Robertson was a real rock in the backline prior to his absence because he was averaging 2.4 clearances and 1.9 tackles per game (WhoScored – Robertson statistics), but he also poses a constant threat in the final third.

Sponsored by Nike, Glasgow’s native has clocked up 72 involvements, 63 assists and nine goals, in 275 appearances since putting pen to paper, showing just how much he loves to use his pace and burst down the flank to create chances as many chances as possible for both himself and his fellow teammates (Transfermarkt – Robertson statistics).

As hailed by Josh Bunting, Robertson is a “sublime” player and there’s no doubting the effort and hard work he puts into every single fixture, so the fact that the manager will have him available for selection again in a few weeks time is most certainly a huge boost for Liverpool.

A força do banco

Joe Root shrugs off Big Bash rust as England ease into Caribbean groove

A glorified warm-up on a sluggish deck did provide Joe Root with a welcome chance to find his groove

England XI 317 for 10 (Root 87) v WI President’s XI
ScorecardAs the scorecard took on an unusual look – it was 284 for 10 when Keaton Jennings came out for a second bat of the innings – you couldn’t help but wonder what Sir Frank Worrell and Sir Clyde Walcott might make of it.The graves of Worrell and Walcott overlook this attractive ground which bears their name – the final member of the Three Ws, Sir Everton Weekes, remains in fine fettle a month short of his 94th birthday – and remind of us a time when Caribbean cricket – Barbadian cricket, even – was the envy of the world. It remains incredible that this tiny island has produced so many great players. But times have changed. Tour games like this, once an eagerly awaited opportunity for regional sides to show their worth in front of keen local support, are now little more than glorified training sessions. And where once – not necessarily the days of the Three Ws, to be fair – Caribbean pitches were expected to provide pace and bounce, they are generally now sluggish and begrudging, offering more to spin than pace. West Indies are down at No. 8 in the Test rankings, too, just a point above Bangladesh. You wonder if these pitches are, in part, responsible. For while the Caribbean still produces impressive fast bowlers – in this match, the pace and skill of Miguel Cummins, Alzarri Joseph and Chemar Holder promises plenty for the future – it must be harder for batsmen to develop when they cannot trust the pace or the bounce in the surface. The last first-class game on this surface saw Jamiacia bowled out for 65 in the fourth innings with two spinners – Jomel Warrican and Nikita Miller – claiming 10-wicket hauls in the match. Even the Three Ws might struggle to thrive in such an environment. The one man who looked comfortable here was Joe Root. He may have struggled in the Big Bash – he managed a top score of 26 in seven innings – and he may have fallen short of a century once more but, on this two-paced surface – Rory Burns described it as “tacky” – with its desperately slow outfield, this represented a fine effort. While none of his teammates even hinted at fluency, Root scored at a run a ball and produced a range of stroke that found gaps in the field. Twice he skipped down the pitch to loft sixes over the offspinner, Bryan Charles, while Holder, a 20-year-old fast bowler who could have a bright future, was cut – or guided – for three fours in an over when he dropped short. Many more times, he created runs with his movement in the crease, his quick wrists, turning balls into gaps. He never seemed to hurry, but he scored almost double the pace of his colleagues. The other top-order batsmen to impress were Rory Burns and Ben Stokes. While neither were fluent, they demonstrated patience and technique in each resisting for over two hours. And if Burns may be frustrated with his dismissal, playing across a straight one, he could be consoled by the disciplined manner he negated this deserving new-ball attack. The dangers of trying to force the pace on such a surface were demonstrated by Jonny Bairstow. Having survived several nervous moments before getting off the mark – he eventually did so with a thick outside edge as he pushed at one off the back foot – he was frustrated into a furious, footless drive that resulted in an edge to the keeper.Impatience was responsible for several of the other wickets. Stokes, who was admirably patient until reaching his 87-ball 50, and Moeen both fell trying to drag short balls into the leg side – Charles was somewhat flattered by his bowling figures though he improved as the day wore on – while Root top-edged a sweep. Jennings had earlier popped a bat-pad catch up to short-leg off his inside edge while at the other end of the day Sam Curran fenced at a short one, Ben Foakes was brilliantly taken by Jahmar Hamilton, who looks a good quality keeper, after edging one that left him, while Jack Leach edged a decent offbreak. While some spectators were disappointed by the nature of the contest, it is the way of the modern world and its unrelenting schedules. As things stand, it appears England will play the top seven that is playing here with the addition of Jos Buttler forcing Moeen Ali down to No. 8. And, with the Barbados pitch expected – maybe ‘hoped’ would be the more appropriate word – to provide some life for seamers, England look likely to play at least three fast bowlers (James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Stokes) with the final selection coming down to a choice between the left-arm swing of Curran or the left-arm spin of Leach. The fact that Duke’s balls are to be used may help Curran. That means Chris Woakes, Olly Stone, Joe Denly and Adil Rashid could be set for a frustrating tour. Woakes did provide a reminder of his value with a typically effective innings late in the day, though, and much could happen in the three days of warm-up cricket that is to follow. England will also bat first in the second warm-up match starting here on Thursday to ensure they don’t spend 180 overs in succession in the field.

South Africa hold nerve after Babar Azam 90 to seal series

Pakistan suffered their first series defeat in this format after a record 11 consecutive wins

The Report by Danyal Rasool03-Feb-2019

David Miller celebrates with his team-mates•AFP

It took 29 runs off a frenetic final over from David Miller as Pakistan lost the plot just after the rain break, and Pakistan spent 20 overs trying to undo the damage. Despite the best efforts of a scintillating Babar Azam, who stroked a superlative 90 in a mammoth partnership with Hussain Talat, the 188 South Africa had put up thanks to a 29-ball 65 from their stand-in captain was seven runs too many for Pakistan. For the second time in as many matches, Pakistan fell short in the final over, allowing South Africa to seal the series with a game to spare. It means Pakistan suffer their first series defeat in this format after a record 11 consecutive wins, their maiden reverse since the World T20 in 2016.It might have been just a T20, but it was an epic, one for the ages. Spanning nearly four and a half hours thanks to a rain break, the full house at one of the most iconic sporting venues was rewarded for braving the elements. It was just after the rain break at the Wanderers that South Africa struck the blows that would, in hindsight, allow them to lift the trophy, with 56 runs scored off the final three overs; until then, Pakistan had bowled well enough to restrict South Africa to a total that appeared well below-par at a ground that has made its name for high-profile chases.Shoaib Malik’s choice to allow Usman Shinwari the final over on a day he had already conceded 34 off three backfired spectacularly, with Miller in the sort of irrepressible form that earns him his fearsome reputation. For most of the innings prior, South Africa had held on to wickets while preparing a platform for lift-off, without quite being able to achieve it. For the second time in as many games, Pakistan had Imad Wasim to thank for that, impeccable tightness ensuring he conceded an astonishing nine runs off his allotted quota. That, in an innings which, his overs removed, saw the hosts score 179 runs in 16.Pakistan’s chase looked on track for the best part of 15 overs, and they had their own golden boy Babar to thank for it. He started off by caressing Beuran Hendricks for three fours off the first three balls. It was a pattern he repeated no less than three times across an innings that would have been appreciated by connoisseurs of all formats, so classical were his shots and assured the execution. Even with the relatively early loss of Fakhar Zaman, Babar found in Talat a partner both willing and capable to continue the onslaught, and when 70 had been scored off just six overs, Pakistan may have begun to think they had compensated for profligacy at the back-end with pugnacity at the start. But in a chase of 188, scoreboard pressure is relentless, and it always seemed like it might begin to tell on Pakistan at some point.Lutho Sipamla, making his debut, showed why discerning followers of South African cricket speak of him with such gushing excitement, varying his pace with the intelligence and composure his senior teammates had failed to muster across the innings. He conceded only one boundary across a four over spell where Babar was kept quiet, and went at under a run a ball when every other South African quick had conceded at least nine per over.Babar Azam flays one through the off side•AFP

With the rate raising in the last five overs thanks to a couple of tight ones, Talat’s touch began to desert him. That put more pressure on 24-year old Babar, who somehow had to find a way to remain unbeaten till the end and keep the asking rate down all by himself. It took its toll off the first ball of the 17th over, with Beuran Hendricks forcing him to attempt clearing the longer cow corner boundary, where the fielder completed a simple catch. From that point on, power shifted hands effectively, and it was Pakistan who found themselves struggling to keep up while South Africa simply had to manage the game. Coming back for their second spells, Chris Morris and Andile Phehlukwayo were far better than they had been earlier, compounding the problems for Malik, who in the final over again found himself running out of partners. As he holed out and Imad Wasim had his middle stump knocked back, Pakistan, having surged so promisingly, ran out of partners, their unblemished record since the World T20 finally tainted.South Africa had been put in to bat early on with Malik fearing the weather would play a big role, while Miller in sharp contrast said he would only focus on his own performance, given they couldn’t control the weather. Rassie van der Dussen’s 40 off 27 allowed Miller to come in at a time when he could play his free-flowing game. While the weather was out of Miller’s control, he struck a six just before the rain break, following up with another four after. The weather might have had its say, but ultimately, it was the South African captain who truly had full control.

New permanent Jack Harrison transfer update emerges from Everton

Everton look to have landed a major boost in their pursuit of a player on a permanent deal after it emerged that he is keen to become part of the furniture at Goodison Park.

Tottenham 2-1 Everton

Despite putting on a valiant display away to Tottenham Hotspur, Andre Gomes' late strike ended up being nothing more than a consolation for the visitors as goals from Richarlison and Son Heung-min gave Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham side a 2-1 victory over the Toffees in north London on Saturday.

Bringing an end to a run of four straight Premier League victories, Everton now sit 16th in the table with 16 points gained from their 18 matches played, four ahead of Luton Town, who occupy 18th place in the division.

Notably, if it weren't for the Toffees' points deduction, they would actually be sitting tenth and only three points off Manchester United in seventh position, something that would've put them in with a shout of competing for continental qualification.

Everton eyeing move to sign “fabulous” new player who Dyche knows well

A loan move looks most lilkely for the Blues.

ByHenry Jackson Dec 23, 2023

Nevertheless, Sean Dyche vented his frustration at Dominic Calvert-Lewin's disallowed goal for a foul from Andre Gomes on Emerson Royal in the build-up, saying:

"I'm a big fan of VAR but I don't know where that one lives today because I think VAR has over-reffed the moment. The referee and the linesperson has an amazing view, they've made the decision with all their experience of doing it. It goes out of the window because they can find contact."

Despite their misfortune, Dyche has done a magnificent job of shifting the narrative at Everton and also has allayed fears that their points deduction could lead to relegation and he could now be on the end of a major boost regarding his pursuit of a player as per latest reports.

Jack Harrison keen to stay at Everton

As per earlier reports this month, Dyche is said to be keen to sign Jack Harrison on a permanent basis following his commendable start to life at Goodison Park on loan from Leeds United.

Now, Football Insider claim that the player himself is keen to sign on the dotted line on Merseyside in what will come as a boost to Dyche. Despite not having an option to buy inserted into his loan deal, there is a release clause in his Leeds contract that the Toffees could look to activate regarding the 27-year-old.

Everton's loan forward Jack Harrison.

Any permanent deal will depend on Everton's ongoing takeover situation and their appeal against their points deduction, which has, for now, put expensive transfer dealings on the back burner.

Labelled one of the most "incredible" players Jesse Marsch has ever coached, according to the man himself, the former England Under-21 international has been a great signing for Everton and it seems to make sense that they now want to see him commit his future for the long-term, making this one to watch in 2024.
