Leeds fans bash Heckingbottom over failure to land Yiadom

Leeds target Andy Yiadom will end speculation of a move to Elland Road by signing for Reading, and Leeds fans suspect it could be bad news for Paul Heckingbottom.

2017/18 was a long and arduous season for Leeds fans, as a good start to the season slowly toiled away after Christmas.

The arrival of Paul Heckingbottom had little to no effect on the side’s form, and any hopes of a playoff push evaporated rather quickly.

Fans have not been impressed by Heckingbottom since his arrival, and they weren’t too happy when he lined up the signing of Andy Yiadom.

Yiadom, a versatile full back, had been one of the few bright spots in Barnsley’s miserable relegation season.

Fans had already given up on the season by the time the Yiadom rumours surfaced, and many felt next season would be the exact same if they didn’t aim higher.

Yiadom now looks all set to join Reading, who narrowly escaped relegation themselves, and Leeds fans couldn’t be happier.

While a few are just breathing a sigh of relief as they didn’t want Yiadom anyway, there are plenty who feel Heckingbottom must not be trusted at the club if they aren’t landing his targets.

Tottenham fans love Pochettino’s joke about signing Messi

Tottenham fans have been enjoying the latest comments from Mauricio Pochettino, after the Spurs boss hinted he would like to bring Lionel Messi to North London.

Pochettino has been forced to deal with rumours about his exit since Zinedine Zidane left Real Madrid last week, with some reports even suggesting he has a “Real Madrid clause” in his new contract.

It is now confirmed there is no such clause in the contract though, which is set to keep him at the club until 2023, and the charismatic boss has put himself even further in fans’ good books with his latest comments.

Pochettino was once again quizzed about a potential exit, asked if he would one day coach Messi with Newell’s Old Boys.

[ad_pod ]

“No, I would like to persuade him to come to pass through Tottenham first before he goes to Newell’s Old Boys,” the 46 year-old responded.

Both men got their careers started with the historic Argentinian club, but the thought of the pair linking up in North London first is certainly an enjoyable one.

Rangers fans are pleased that Jak Alnwick appears to be staying at the club

Jak Alnwick appears intent on staying at Rangers this summer and supporters are keen to have him around Ibrox, fighting for his place alongside new signing Allan McGregor and previously established number one Wes Foderingham.

Alnwick has been linked with a move away from the Light Blues over the last week, although The Scottish Sun most recently reported that a potential switch to Shrewsbury had fallen through.

The goalkeeper himself took to Twitter on Saturday to share his excitement at starting pre-season with the Gers, refuting the idea he will be leaving any time soon.

Supporters are keen for him to stay, especially after impressive form between the sticks in the latter parts of last season. With McGregor arriving, many expect Foderingham to be less than happy sitting on the bench, meaning there could be a role for the 24-year-old in Steven Gerrard’s squad.

Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on it all…

Man United target Kalidou Koulibaly is the CB partner Bailly has been crying out for

According to reports in the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s top centre-back target this summer isn’t Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld, and Napoli giant Kalidou Koulibaly is one of the names on an eight-man shortlist that he and the club are said to be considering.

What’s the word, then?

Well, MEN say that a “high-level source” at Old Trafford says that their scouts aren’t convinced that Alderweireld and are considering alternatives, with Koulibaly on their radar.

MEN report that the 29-year-old Spurs man remains an option this summer, but is not the preferred name on their shortlist.

The report adds that United, whose fans have urged their club to sign a right winger with 26 goals and assists in 2017/18 “before Arsenal or Chelsea do”, value the Belgium international at £20m less than their Premier League rivals’ £70m asking price, and they feel they perhaps could get more value for their money elsewhere with someone like Koulibaly.

How did the 26-year-old do during the 2017/18 campaign?

The Senegal international was impressive, and came so close to helping Napoli win the Serie A title before they were eventually beaten to the prize by Juventus.

The centre-back made 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing one assist, but he showed his defensive qualities and his ability on the ball throughout.

According to WhoScored.com, Koulibaly had an average passing accuracy of 91.2% in 35 Italian top flight outings and 88.8% in five Champions League appearances, while he completed 12 of the 14 dribbles he attempted in 41 games in Serie A and in European competition.

Would he be a good signing for United?

He certainly would be.

The Senegalese centre-back has established himself as one of the best in his position throughout the whole of European football since moving to Napoli, and his quality in possession would mean that he would be a big hit at Old Trafford under Mourinho, and he would finally be the solid partner that Eric Bailly has been crying out for.

The fact that he is good defensively – when it comes to tackling and making interceptions and blocks – is a huge bonus, but one worry is that he isn’t as strong in the air as he perhaps should be given his 6ft 5in frame.

Everton should avoid Mario Gotze and invest the money elsewhere

Everton are interested in launching a surprising bid for Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Gotze, according to Sky Sports.

What’s the story?

Mario Gotze made a big name for himself early in his career and was considered one of the brightest talents in Europe a few years ago.

Unfortunately his career has been blighted by injury but he will always be fondly remembered for scoring the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final for Germany.

The 26-year-old moved from Borrussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich in 2013, only to move back to his former club in 2016.

Last season the attacking midfielder made 19 starts in the Bundesliga, scoring two goals and assisting three.

According to the report, Dortmund are keen to recoup most of the £22million they paid to bring him back to the Signal Iduna Park, and many clubs are interested in the player.

Is it likely?

If Everton were to pull this off, it would surely be one of the shocks of the summer.

With Sky reporting that Arsenal, West Ham, Marseille and Valencia in for the World Cup winner, Everton would have to do something special to convince Gotze to head to Merseyside.

Even if they did, they would be spending a lot of money on a player who hasn’t quite lived up to the promise he showed early in his career.

He has had little game time in the past few years having spent a lot of time nursing injuries, and Marco Silva would be better off spending his money elsewhere on areas that need investment.

Arsenal fans wax lyrical about Banega following Argentina victory

On Monday, Estadio Deportivo reported that Arsenal manager Unai Emery has made contact with Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega regarding a possible move.

Emery has previously worked with the 29-year-old, who is believed to have concerns about moving abroad.

Banega, who re-joined Sevilla for a second spell from Inter Milan in 2017, made 48 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and creating six assists.

The Spanish publication states that the midfielder could end up being available for £17.5m due to a clause in his contract.

It is unclear whether Arsenal will pursue a deal, but some fans are certainly keen on the idea after witnessing his performance for Argentina at the World Cup on Tuesday.

Banega played a pivotal role in his nation’s 2-1 victory over Nigeria, which sent them into the knockout rounds of the tournament.

While inside his own half, the midfielder chipped the ball over the top to find Lionel Messi, who scored Argentina’s first of the evening.

Pulis should stop complaining an realise how good his team are

Before Middlesbrough face Sheffield Wednesday tonight, much of the attention from manager Tony Pulis has been surrounding the scheduling of the fixture.

The Welshman has been complaining that the turnaround after the international break is too soon for his squad, as they should have been playing on Saturday but had the fixture rescheduled.

The former Stoke manager had said that his side had ten players out on international duty, while The Owls only had one. While he certainly has a point, and is something that the league should look into for the future, he is also making himself look fairly foolish.

Very rarely has a manager described the fact that they had ten international players compared to the opposition’s one as a bad thing. While they may be disadvantaged slightly, it is also a clear indication of the strength of Pulis’ team. He should be grateful that he has a squad with so much quality, and get on with it when something like this happens, complaining is an insult to the other managers in the league.

Even Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay said that Middlesbrough are one of the best teams in the league, something that has been abundantly clear from the beginning of the season. Pulis’ reaction is not something that his own fans, or the opposition’s, would want to hear.

The Boro head to Hillsborough this evening knowing a win would send them to the top of the Championship, although that may only be briefly with other rivals yet to play.

Have Stoke pulled off the deal of the summer?

Initially when Stoke were linked with a move for Xherdan Shaqiri many eyebrows were raised. And it looked as if the deal was off not so long ago after Stoke boss Mark Hughes had pretty much given up on signing the Switzerland international as he stalled on a move to the Potteries. Order restored, it seemed

However, despite this the former Bayern Munich man made a dramatic U-turn to join the Potters to the delight of Hughes and fans alike.

The signing of a player from Inter Milan is a real coup for the club, and this season Shaqiri should make a huge difference for Stoke as they look to build on last season’s ninth place finish.

It is true that Shaqiri did fail to live up to expectations at the Allianz Arena and the San Siro, struggling to nail down a permanent first-team spot due to a lack of consistency. Nonetheless that does not make him a bad player and there is no doubting the huge potential and quality the former FC Basel man possesses, and at just 23-years-old a fee of £12m for such a talent certainly does seem risk-free when compared to the £49m fee Man City paid for Raheem Sterling – a similar player to Shaqiri, albeit a few years younger.

The last couple of years for Shaqiri have been particularly frustrating as he has only played 41 league games in that time – both with Inter Milan and at Bayern. Not the amount of football he needs to improve and develop his game.

So it is clear that Stoke will be getting a player fully driven to play regular football again and show why he is so highly-rated.

He will need to be given confidence to shine and Shaqiri had already revealed the faith shown in him by Hughes was one of the deciding factors in his move to the Premier League. He said: “It is very important for me to have the coach behind me showing great belief in me, and Mark Hughes has done that.

“I really want to show him and the rest of staff, players and supporters great football on the pitch and hopefully help move the club forward.”

It is clear that Shaqiri needs that belief to flourish. Hughes will give him that at Stoke and it will allow the Premier League to see the very best of Shaqiri, which is certainly be a prospect that will excite the Potters fans for the rest of the season.

At his best the stocky attacker is frighteningly good. He has a fantastic touch, rapid pace, quick acceleration off the mark, strength to keep the ball, the ability to beat players and create chances and perhaps most importantly a tendency to score goals.

There is no doubting that if Hughes can get the best out of Shaqiri the difference he will make at Stoke this season will be massive.

Why Manuel Pellegrini must decide where to play Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne continues to settle into life at Manchester City with what looks like increasing ease.

Across town Anthony Martial’s arrival at Manchester United has been nothing short of explosive but De Bruyne, City’s most expensive purchase ever, is also hitting the ground running without quite as much fanfare.

With each goal and assist though, the Belgian is looking like he could well justify his mammoth transfer fee.

In Sunderland on Tuesday night, the new signing scored one and made another, in a comfortable win for City.

[ffc-gal cat=”manchester-city” no=”5″]

That contribution takes his tally to two goals in his first four games. Not exactly the headline grabbing stuff of Martial but Manuel Pellegrini will be quietly pleased with his initial return.

The Chilean manager now though needs to decide how best to incorporate such an asset into his side.

At most teams a £55 million player would be plonked straight into the first eleven in whichever position was deemed his best. At Manchester City however, price tags offer no guarantees.

De Bruyne in recent games has taken on a role which is usually given to City’s main playmaker David Silva. The Spaniard has missed the last couple of fixtures through injury but is now ready to return.

City also spent a fortune on Raheem Sterling this summer and the young England man will have similar designs on the primary attacking midfield role. Aside from these two, Pellegrini also has a host of other attacking options at his disposal.

De Bruyne, Silva and Sterling of course could play together but this would mean sacrificing Jesus Navas from the starting eleven. The former Sevilla man is the only one of the entire all-star cast of attacking midfielders that offers the side genuine width.

During his great success in the Bundesliga last season De Bruyne was often deployed by Wolfsburg in a wide attacking role but one which afforded him the freedom of the front line to influence games.

Silva’s return to the hole behind Sergio Aguero would likely see the 24-year-old take up a similar position for his new club.

The Spaniard is reported to have a good chance of being available for the clash with Spurs at the weekend and Pellegrini is almost certain to use the opportunity to play De Bruyne alongside the little magician in his attack for the first time.

Silva is likely to be given the most central role with De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling pushed to wider areas but City fans will expect to see great fluidity in the system which, if successful, would create maximum headache for defenders and acres of space for Aguero.

For now, the former Genk youngster seems set to occupy the right-hand side for the league leaders.

The omission of the searing speed of the in-form Navas would be the only consequence of this move.

Aguero, Sterling and De Bruyne himself are all pacy players and the front line is taking on an increasingly terrifying look.

De Bruyne has publicly stated that he doesn’t want to be seen as the star in the side. His incredible ability along with this down to earth attitude should help ease his transition into a sublime attacking outfit.

Five Liverpool players who could benefit from Rodgers sacking

After an encouraging first three games of the season, Liverpool’s 2014/15 campaign appears to have ground to a halt. Just two points from their last four games – including a lifeless 1-1 home draw with newly promoted Norwich – have opened the doors for the Brendan Rodgers haters to come flooding back in, and it appears that the pressure is really on the Northern Irishman, who admitted on Friday that his job is not safe.

The shadows of Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti loom large in the background, while other candidates such as Garry Monk and Eddie Howe are being spoken about by Reds supporters lusting after change, and unless things turn around pretty quickly they could get their wishes.

Poor results against Aston Villa, FC Sion and Everton – perhaps a final nail in the coffin waiting to happen – may see the axe fall, and any new boss to come in will have a talented squad to work with.

It may not only be the fans hoping for change, as these FIVE Liverpool players might actually be secretly hoping that a new manager comes in to help get the best from their own skillsets…

Emre Can

https://vine.co/v/eP9txrUxvpm/embed/simple

There’s no doubting Emre Can’s potential, but right now the young German seems a little lost. Shifted between centre-back, right-back, holding midfield and a traditional central-midfield position, the 21-year-old has struggled to find any sort of consistency, which has reflected in his hot and cold showings so far. His bulky frame and neat passing seem well suited to an anchoring role in the centre of the pitch, yet under Rodgers he appears to have too many tasks being thrown at him, which could be a reason for his often erratic showings. A different manager may dedicate more time to settling him into one concrete position, as right now his versatility could grow into his biggest weakness.

Mamadou Sakho

Mario Balotelli

https://vine.co/v/ePjrgi9nit3/embed/simple

Balotelli is still a Liverpool player. His return to AC Milan is only a loan deal, so there’s every chance that he could be heading back to Anfield next year. It’s fair to say that the gamble of 2014 didn’t quite work out, but it was not entirely Balotelli’s fault that his Merseyside career was blighted by disappointment.

Okay, the player’s attitude and work-rate, both in training and on the pitch, are questionable at best, but Rodgers didn’t do much to help his case. The Northern Irishman was intent on playing the same style of football that brought the best from Luis Suarez, despite ‘Balo’ being a very different attacking force, while a lack of chances in a front two also had a negative impact on Balotelli, who is known to be a player at his best when dropping slightly deeper.

Should he return, a different coach could extract the undoubted potential the 25-year-old has.

Dejan Lovren

Although Lovren has become a bit of a joke figure since his move from Southampton to Liverpool, the 26-year-old is by no means a bad footballer. The Croatia international was one of the Premier League’s top centre-backs under Mauricio Pochettino with the Saints, where he was not left overly-exposed and certainly wasn’t given too much responsibility in terms of keeping hold of possession.

Pochettino showed that if Lovren has a good shield in front of him he is a commanding defender, but under Rodgers he’s been forced to work behind an ageing Steven Gerrard, a slowing Lucas Leiva or Joe Allen – none of whom are genuine holding midfielders. A new manager with a greater preference for building a balanced midfield could prise the former Lyon man’s confidence back to the fore.

Christian Benteke

https://vine.co/v/eUJmPDPDvDb/embed/simple

Benteke has looked pretty good so far in a Liverpool shirt. Two goals, including a wonder-strike at Manchester United, illustrate that he’s getting into the right positions, and the fact his return counts for 50% of the Reds’ goals – although a worrying figure for the team given they have netted just four – is proof that he’s a key influence. However, it seems that Rodgers is almost embarrassed to play to the Belgian’s strengths, with the Merseysiders reluctant to put in crosses from wide and equally hesitant to adopt a more direct approach.
