Youngsters have brought "fearlessness" to the side – van Niekerk

The very first stand-alone women’s World T20 is less than a week away, and the South Africa captain feels women’s cricket thoroughly deserves the “alone time”

The build-up to the World T20 is well underway, and unofficial warm-up games between England, West Indies, South Africa and India drew huge crowds to the Sir Vivian Richards cricket ground in Antigua on Thursday. South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk called the atmosphere at the ground “the best” she had ever experienced at an international.”It was close to one of the biggest [crowds],” said van Niekerk. “The atmosphere was the best I’ve played around. It felt like an official game, and it was India South africa so it was quite daunting.”India reached 146 for 4 in their innings, having opted to bat first, and though Laura Wolvaardt managed 42 in South Africa’s chase, van Niekerk’s team fell three runs short in front of a crowd enlivened by celebrations for Antigua and Barbuda’s 37th independence day.”I got a bit nervous there at the end and kept on telling myself it’s just a warm-up game, but with everyone around it just made for a really good cricket match,” said van Niekerk. “And then with the England West Indies game, the way the West Indies women played, it just shows you what a team can do when the crowd gets behind them.”The very first stand-alone women’s World T20 is less than a week away, and van Niekerk said that women’s cricket thoroughly deserves the “alone time”.”It’s due and it’s well deserved,” she said The growth of women’s cricket has shown that it deserves the time – the alone time if I can say it like that. You have to pinch yourself when you see how quickly it’s grown. And the entertainment factor is there now, with bigger hits, quicker bowlers, athletic players, it’s a lot more exciting. It’s well deserved for women’s cricket at the moment, and hopefully we can do justice to the tournament.”South Africa reached the semi-final of the 2014 edition of the World T20, while last year they came within touching distance of a berth in the final of the 50-over World Cup, only to fall to England in a tightly contested encounter in Bristol. With match-winners in almost every department this time around, van Niekerk believes this is “definitely” the best chance her team have ever had to reach – and win – a global final”The team we have is the best we’ve had. We have experienced players and young players, exciting players. It is our best chance, it’s just up to us if we want to win it or not.”South Africa blooded several rookies on their tour of the Caribbean in September, drawing the one-day series 1-1 and then fighting back from 2-0 to hold the reigning T20 champions to a 2-2 draw in the T20Is. Wolvaardt, the 19-year-old top-order batter, averaged 43 in the T20s, striking the ball at 111.68, while fellow teenager Tumi Sekhukhune played a similarly vital role, taking seven wickets across both series. One of the main things the youngsters have brought to the side, van Niekerk said, is “fearlessness”.”The massive thing is the fearlessness,” she said. “The younger ones are fearless. They don’t quite know yet who’s bowling at them or who they’re facing. It’s exciting for me just to watch them go about their job, because they just play the ball. When you play as long as we have, you start knowing the players and you know who’s bowling at you or the aura a player has around them. The younger players don’t have that. It’s something some of our senior players have taken away from them: just play the ball. I told them to flourish and just have fun.”The Decision Review System (DRS) will be used in an ICC World T20 event for the first time ever, and it will also be the first time that van Niekerk and her team will be using it.”We’re not experienced at all, this will be my first time,” she confirmed. “I’m just trying to keep all the bowlers calm. Because I think Lizelle [Lee] is the only one who has used it. We had a bit of a chat about it. It’s going to be an experience. We’ve felt like in the past we’ve got a few hard [decisions], but hopefully now we can use the DRS to our benefit.”We spoke to the keepers in Trisha [Chetty] and Lizelle, and they are going to play a massive role. They are going to see if it’s going to hit or not. We said if you feel like it’s really far fetched, just don’t go for it, but I’ll back any player if they want to use it. It’s not there just for me to use it or make that decision, we are a team. If you feel it’s out, go up. But the keeper is going to be the most important player for those decisions.”

Birmingham City’s dream XI after signing 3 new players in Jan

When Birmingham City fired John Eustace from his post as manager, the Blues were flying in sixth position.

Blues co-owner Tom Brady wanted to bring a "big name" to the club and opted to hire Wayne Rooney, despite not boasting the managerial pedigree to suggest that was the right decision.

As expected, Brady's attempts to treat football like an American sport have backfired, with the former Manchester United striker overseeing four defeats from his first five Championship matches.

It's been a disastrous six weeks for Birmingham, who have gone from challenging for the play-offs to languishing in 18th position and if this terrible form continues, the club will have no other option but to pull the trigger and sack Rooney.

If he does make it to January, however, the one-time England skipper could get the opportunity to bolster his squad with new recruits and attempt to turn a difficult situation into a more positive outlook.

With this in mind, here's what a predicted XI could look like at Birmingham come the end of the January transfer window…

1 GK – Jack Butland

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland

Following his appointment in October, Rooney instantly admitted that he was eyeing possible targets for the January transfer window, and one of those could be former goalkeeper Jack Butland, who started his career at St Andrew's.

According to the Sun [via Birmingham Mail], the 6 foot 5 Rangers shot-stopper is Rooney's first choice for the position, however, he may have to wait for him, claims the report. Butland joined the Scottish giants when he left Crystal Palace in the summer meaning he would have to push to leave for a small sum in January.

If they did manage to recapture the 30-year-old – who has been dubbed "outstanding" by ex-Gers boss Michael Beale – he would replace the veteran John Ruddy, who has conceded 22 goals in 16 appearances this term.

2 RB – Ethan Laird

Birmingham made the astute capture of Ethan Laird from Manchester United in the summer but he only got two and a half games into his Blues career before he was sidelined with a hamstring injury against Bristol City.

An explosive and attacking right back, Laird has returned to become the driving force down the right, making more successful dribbles (2.4) than any other player in the squad.

3 CB – Dion Sanderson

Birmingham centre-back Dion Sanderson.

Captured on a permanent deal from arch-rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer, following two successful loan spells at St Andrew's, Sanderson was named the Birmingham captain this season and has led by example ever since.

If he isn't making last-ditch tackles or winning aerial duels against attackers, he's commanding his defence and setting the tone through his purposefulness in possession.

His importance to the team is underscored by the fact he's featured in every minute of the Championship so far.

4 CB – Emanuel Aiwu

Wayne Rooney

When Rooney was appointed manager, Kevin Long was preferred to partner Sanderson in defence, however, the Englishman has since given Emanuel Aiwu a chance to shine.

He arrived on loan from Serie B side US Cremonese in the summer and following his debut in the defeat against Southampton, the 23-year-old has never looked back.

Despite the poor run of form, Aiwu has been a rare beam of light during a difficult period, making the second most tackles per game (3.3) and more clearances (4.0) than any other Blues player.

5 LB – Cody Drameh

Former Luton loanee Cody Drameh.

The on-loan Leeds United full-back has started in all five games that Rooney has taken charge of and has impressed with his attacking impetus down the right and left flank, supplying two assists.

Drameh, who earned promotion to the Premier League with Luton Town last term, has also impressed with the defensive side of his game, ranking in the top 3% against his positional peers in the Championship this season for tackles, top 11% for blocks and top 9% for clearances, as per FBref.

Having taken his opportunity to shine once more, Rooney should try and strike a deal with Leeds to keep him at the club permanently after revealing he has no intention of signing a new contract at Elland Road.

6 CM – Krystian Bielik

Birmingham City loan midfielderKrystian Bielik.

The 11-cap Poland international is the destructive ball-winner in midfield and eats up ground like it's going out of fashion, recovering an impressive 7.7 balls per game, making 1.7 tackles and 1.9 interceptions – the second most in the Blues squad.

A key anchor in Rooney's ship that he hopes will sail towards the top half of the Championship table, Bielik has only missed one match this term and unsurprisingly, it was one they lost – a 3-1 defeat against Sunderland last time out.

7 CM – Gavin Kilkenny

According to Football Insider, Birmingham plotted a move for Bournemouth central midfielder Gavin Kilkenny in the summer.

The 23-year-old, who had spells on loan at Charlton and Stoke last season, is surplus to requirements at the Vitality Stadium having yet to make an appearance this term.

That said, the Blues could opt to go back in for Kilkenny – who would add an abundance of qualities alongside Bielik – to bolster their midfield.

When he played in the Championship for Bournemouth in 2021/22, he ranked in the top 2% among midfielders for pass completion (87.8%) and the top 9% for tackles (2.63).

8 RW – Koji Miyoshi

Miyoshi is a Japanese international who was captured from Royal Antwerp in the summer.

One of several quality Japanese players currently plying their trade in England, the 26-year-old has made an instant impression since arriving at the club.

The fleet-footed winger has scored three and supplied two assists this term while recording the most big chances created (4) and second most key passes per game (1.4) in the squad.

9 CAM – Juninho Bacuna

The former Huddersfield Town midfielder, who has made 15 appearances in the Championship this term, is integral to supplying the Blues with an abundance of energy and dynamism going forward but also tremendous defensive capabilities.

Despite being an attacking midfielder, the ball-winning machine ranks in the top 2% in the second tier against attacking midfielders/wingers for interceptions and the top 2% for blocks.

10 LW – Siriki Dembele

A fine capture from Bournemouth when he arrived in the summer, Dembele boasts the quality to turn a game on its head in an instant, terrorising defences with his pace and power.

The 26-year-old has demonstrated how dangerous his precise ball control can be by averaging the second-most successful dribbles (2.3) of any player in the side as well as scoring three times in 13 appearances this term.

Ange could land Gil upgrade with Spurs swoop for 5ft 8 "genius"

Tottenham Hotspur had enjoyed a tremendous start to life under Ange Postecoglou and had established themselves as Premier League table-toppers after ten matches.

It was an unforeseen rise; while the craggy-faced Australian's appointment was viewed as rational – his tactical vision and approach aligned with the club's DNA, and won chairman Daniel Levy over despite interest in coaches such as Julian Nagelsmann – few expected him to blitz into early title contention.

Ange Postecoglou

Spurs had fallen by the wayside last season and finished eighth, but Postecoglou instilled belief and implemented his playing style swiftly, and the results were there for all to see.

But a triad of recent league defeats has exposed the frailty and thinness of Spurs' squad, and the January transfer window must be used to land some impactful additions.

Tottenham transfer news – Jota

According to The Times, Tottenham are 'stepping up' their interest in signing Al-Ittihad's Jota in a loan deal in January, with the Portuguese winger's playing time in Saudi Arabia severely hindered by a league limit on the number of foreign players eligible for inclusion in the matchday squad.

While Postecoglou's priority is the defence, injuries to Manor Solomon and Richarlison have made the proposition of signing the loan-listed 24-year-old enticing.

The surprise academy star who could replace Richarlison at Spurs

Postecoglou could find a devastating new attacking outlet in this rising Spurs starlet.

ByAngus Sinclair Nov 17, 2023

Jota starred under Postecoglou's wing at Celtic before completing a £25m transfer to the Saudi Pro League in July, though he was linked to Tottenham prior and could now make the move, replacing Bryan Gil on the flanks.

Bryan Gil's Tottenham statistics

Gil arrived with such promise. Leaving his Spanish homeland to join Tottenham in a £22m deal from Sevilla in 2021, this mercurial winger was touted for big things.

ESPN's David Cartlidge had dubbed him a "potential star in the making", and there was – is – so much to like; electric pace, deft dribbling and comparisons to Manchester City's Jack Grealish.

Tottenham winger Bryan Gil.

But he's failed to get going and yields just two assists and a grand total of zero goals from 34 Tottenham appearances, joining Valencia in a loan move in January 2022 and only returning to the pack this summer.

With Tottenham's mountainous pile of injuries calling for heavy rotation, Gil started during the recent loss against Aston Villa and did actually play well, completing 3/4 dribbles and making one key pass, as per Sofascore, but he boasts not the physicality nor the confidence to star for Postecoglou at present, and Jota should be brought in to take a starring role.

The statistics that show why Tottenham should sign Jota

Jota has not enjoyed the start to life in the Saudi Pro League that he would have hoped for, playing just five times, scoring one goal and not earning a single start – his last appearance came in September.

It's proved to be a waste of everyone's time, and given that Jota reportedly earns £200k-per-week it has not been a prudent business venture, especially after such a prolific 2022/23 campaign with Celtic, where he plundered 15 goals and 12 assists across all competitions, even scoring against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

The 5 foot 8 dynamo was absolutely incredible in the Scottish Premiership, clinching 11 goals and assists apiece, also creating 13 big chances and completing 80% of his passes, praised for his “perfect” technical skills by journalist Josh Bunting.

While the Premier League would be a step up, Postecoglou knows Jota's skill set well and could slot him right into the system, with his past exploits highlighting his cutting edge; he has even been described as a "genius" by pundit Ally McCoist.

If the Lilywhites can successfully manufacture a loan deal, a big upgrade on Gil could be secured while not precluding winter investment on the backline, which, all in all, makes for a fantastic window for Postecoglou as he looks to steer his side back on track after such a stellar start.

Coach Rajput offers Zimbabwe a blueprint for survival

As Zimbabwe face a mammoth task of batting out the fifth day to save a Test match in Dhaka, Lalchand Rajput turned to recent history for an example of what is required

Liam Brickhill14-Nov-2018

Brendan Taylor shuffles across and fends one awkwardly•AFP

Lalchand Rajput knows a thing or two about saving games in the subcontinent. His 20 first-class hundreds, and an average just a shade under 50, attest to his knowledge of these sorts of conditions from his playing days, and indeed, his very first Ranji Trophy ton was scored in the fourth innings of a match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. As Zimbabwe face a mammoth task of batting out the fifth day to save a Test match in Dhaka, their coach offered a blueprint for survival. First, Rajput turned to recent history for an example of what is required. In October, Australia were faced with a similarly daunting task in the first Test against Pakistan in Dubai before Usman Khawaja’s ton (and Nathan Lyon’s pluck) secured an unlikely draw.”Cricket is a game of uncertainties,” began Rajput’s rearguard disquisition. “You never know what will happen. It just takes one or two big partnerships. It’s happened. If you look at a game like Pakistan/Australia, they really saved a Test match. Khawaja batted the whole day. So we hope somebody stands up and bats a session, because it’s just a question of three sessions. If you can bat one session, then slowly we can [do it].”There’s a little more grip in the Shere Bangla surface than there was in Dubai, but Rajput’s advice to his batsmen was to put the wearing track out of their minds and play each ball on merit. “We don’t think about the pitch now,” he said. “You just have to go to a mindset that you play on the merit of the ball. The pitch is not in our control, it’s uncontrollable, so back your defence, back your instinct, play the ball on merit. If the ball pops up or something, it’s unfortunate, but at least you’re there to try and defend.”Led by Mushfiqur Rahim behind the stumps, a chorus of close-in fielders will constantly remind the visiting batsmen about the deteriorating strip tomorrow and here, Rajput explained, was where the mental aspect – concentration, and the ability to tune out fears and distractions – would be key.”Definitely any team will try and put pressure on the batsmen with close in fielders,” he said. “Some odd balls are jumping, it’s turning, and on the fifth day you can’t expect a true wicket. But that’s the skill level, that’s the mental aspect of the game. You’ve got to be really prepared for that. Whatever happens with that ball, you’ve just got to forget and keep on concentrating on the next ball. It takes a lot of character. If you show that character, only then you can survive in Test cricket. We all know that Test cricket tests the character of a player, and that will really test our character.”Certainly, he warned, they should avoid thinking about what’s at stake here: their first away series win in almost two decades. “I’ve got to be positive and make them feel that it’s just another game. Don’t give that notion that we’re going to win the series if we draw, no, because that adds additional pressure on them. It’s just another game, you’ve got to go and show your skill level and try to bat the day.”The main thing is cricket is played nine inches above the shoulders. This is very, very important. They have to be really calm. They have to be really tough and go through those critical moments. There will be a phase when the bowlers are on top, and you have to respect that and go through that grind that shows that toughness. At the end, you’ve got to back your game. You’ve got to be confident about your defence and your shot selection. You’ve got to keep it very simple, and not think too much. If you keep it simple, then you succeed.”Rajput advised that insurmountable problem can appear much more achievable if it’s broken up into lots of little challenges.”Have small sessions, one hour and then the lunch break,” he said. “And then concentrate for another hour. Small sessions will do a world of good for us. The first hour will be very key. If Brendan [Taylor] and Sean Williams can bat through that, then the pressure will be on the fielding side. And if we play the first session, then it becomes easier for the next two.”
