Gayle's six-laden 123 razes UAE

Shimron Hetmyer played the perfect partner, allowing UAE no respite once Gayle departed to complete a blistering century of his own

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Mar-2018After losing to Afghanistan and surviving a scare against UAE in the warm-ups, West Indies launched their World Cup Qualifiers proper in style, amassing 357 for 4 against UAE in Harare. Chris Gayle led the way with a six-laden assault, finishing with 123 off 91 balls, while Shimron Hetmyer struck a maiden ODI hundred in his third match. Gayle’s innings contained 11 sixes and seven fours. The carnage started when he smashed seamer Mohammed Naveed for three successive boundaries in the seventh over and followed it with two fours off offspinner Rohan Mustafa in the next over. In all, Gayle hit 35 runs off 25 balls from Mustafa, including three sixes. Evin Lewis added 31 in an 88-run opening stand before being pinned lbw by left-arm spinner Ahmed Raza in the 17th over.IDI/Getty Images

Gayle then combined with Hetmyer to wreck UAE’s bowling attack. They plundered 103 runs at a run-rate of just over nine to set their side up for a tall score. After bringing up his first fifty off 47 balls, Gayle vaulted to his second off only 32 balls. He then celebrated the milestone with a hat-trick of sixes against Mustafa.Soon after, legspinner Imran Haider had Gayle holing out, but Hetmyer continued to drive the innings. He hit 14 fours and four sixes before being dismissed in the 48th over. He was assisted by useful contributions from Shai Hope (35, before retiring hurt because of a sore knee) and captain Jason Holder (12 not out). West Indies, however, will be worried about Marlon Samuels’ form: he laboured to 15 off 34 balls. In the warm-up match against the same opposition, he had managed only 15 off 32 balls.Five out of six UAE bowlers conceded more than six runs an over. Naveed gave away 53 runs in nine overs but could not find a wicket.UAE did not go down without a fight in their reply. Rameez Shahzad scored a second ODI century, at over a run a ball, batting through after coming in in the 13th over. Shaiman Anwar hit a quick half-century, and another rapid cameo came down the order from Adnan Mufti. Still they hardly threatened the target, eventually falling 61 short of it. Jason Holder, meanwhile, picked up a second ODI five-for, taking five of the six wickets to fall in the chase.

Fabrizio Romano: £200k-a-week Arsenal star could now leave the club in days

Arsenal are undergoing a major restructure of their squad ahead of the 2025/2026 campaign, with manager Mikel Arteta desperate to end the club’s long wait for a Premier League title.

Arsenal in discussions for £85m Serie A star as "close" circle contacted

The north Londoners have a number of targets they’re exploring.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 20, 2025

New sporting director Andrea Berta’s arrival in north London three months ago brought plenty of anticipation with it, and the Italian has already been busy for a long time behind-the-scenes.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is set to join Arsenal after the Gunners and Berta agreed to pay over his release clause. While Arteta’s side need to stump up a larger fee overall for the Spain international, this cost will be spread out across installments, allowing Arsenal to both navigate PSR regulations and take less of a chunk out of their summer transfer kitty for this year.

Kepa Arrizabalaga is also still joining Arsenal from Chelsea as David Raya’s new back-up goalkeeper (The Times), and the experienced 30-year-old is set to compete for Arteta’s number one spot between the sticks.

While Arsenal are yet to bring in a new striker, despite talks for both Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, Arteta’s dire need for a centre-forward means it’ll surely only be a matter of time.

Amidst all of this activity, when it comes to recruitment, players deemed surplus to requirements have been going the other way as well.

Jorginho and Kieran Tierney have officially departed Arsenal, with the former terminating his contract early so he can link up with Flamengo for the Club World Cup, and the latter re-joining former club Celtic on a free transfer.

Now, amid challenging talks over a new deal for star £200,000-per-week midfielder Thomas Partey, the Ghanaian is close to joining them.

Thomas Partey could leave Arsenal in the next few days

He made over 50 appearances under Arteta last season in what was his best-ever campaign for Arsenal, prompting the club to open discussions over an extension, but these negotiations have gone nowhere.

As things stand, Partey could now leave Arsenal in a matter of days, as explained by Fabrizio Romano.

The 32-year-old seemed nailed-on to quit the north London club before 2024/2025, given his well-documented past injury problems, but Partey’s resurgence has suddenly made the star’s exit a much bigger blow for Arteta.

Arsenal’s manager was public in his desire for Partey to remain in N5, after the ex-Atletico Madrid man thrived playing in both midfield and as an emergency right-back last term, which included some pretty big performances against the likes of Real Madrid.

Amid serious interest from AC Milan and José Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe, the curtain appears to be drawing on Partey’s five-year stay at the club, which could now leave Arteta one “sensational” player short in the engine room.

Steven Smith banned for one Test, Bancroft given three demerit points

Australia captain Steven Smith will not play the fourth Test against South Africa in Johannesburg, after the ICC gave him the maximum penalty for tampering with the ball

Daniel Brettig in Cape Town25-Mar-2018Australia captain Steven Smith will not play the fourth Test against South Africa in Johannesburg, after the ICC gave him the maximum penalty for tampering with the ball on the third day of the Newlands Test. Fielder Cameron Bancroft, the player to actually tamper with the ball, was given three demerit points and fined 75% of his match fee after accepting the Level 2 charge.Earlier on Sunday, Smith was stood down as captain by Cricket Australia for the rest of the ongoing Cape Town Test, while David Warner was removed as vice-captain. Both players took the field under the temporary leadership of wicketkeeper Tim Paine.ICC chief executive David Richardson laid the charge against Smith under Article 2.2.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct which prohibits to ‘all types of conduct of a serious nature that is contrary to the spirit of the game’. Smith accepted the charge and the sanction of two suspension points, which equates to a ban for the next Test match, and the 100% fine of his match fee. He will have four demerit points added to his record.”The decision made by the leadership group of the Australian team to act in this way is clearly contrary to the spirit of the game, risks causing significant damage to the integrity of the match, the players and the sport itself and is therefore ‘serious’ in nature. As captain, Steve Smith must take full responsibility for the actions of his players and it is appropriate that he be suspended,” ICC CEO David Richardson said.”The game needs to have a hard look at itself. In recent weeks we have seen incidents of ugly sledging, send-offs, dissent against umpires’ decisions, a walk-off, ball tampering and some ordinary off-field behaviour. The ICC needs to do more to prevent poor behaviour and better police the spirit of the game, defining more clearly what is expected of players and enforcing the regulations in a consistent fashion. In addition and most importantly Member countries need to show more accountability for their teams’ conduct. Winning is important but not at the expense of the spirit of the game which is intrinsic and precious to the sport of cricket. We have to raise the bar across all areas.”The ICC confirmed that the umpires had been made aware of the possibility of ball tampering by television replays on the big screen at Newlands. The on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Nigel Llong then spoke to Bancroft and Smith, before they the third umpire Ian Gould and fourth umpire Allahudien Palekar, laid the ball-tampering charges. They did not replace the ball nor award South Africa five penalty runs because they did not believe the ball’s condition had been changed. The match referee Andy Pycroft said he hoped Bancroft would learn from the episode. “To carry a foreign object on to the field of play with the intention of changing the condition of the ball to gain an unfair advantage over your opponent is against not only the Laws, but the Spirit of the game as well,” he said.”That said, I acknowledge that Cameron has accepted responsibility for his actions by pleading guilty to the charge and apologising publicly. As a young player starting out in international cricket, I hope the lessons learned from this episode will strongly influence the way he plays the game during the rest of his career.”

Caso seja preciso, voltaremos a cobrar.

Exit news: "Brilliant" Celtic player wants to quit Parkhead permanently

One Celtic player has decided he wants to leave the club in the near future, according to a fresh update.

Which Celtic players could leave next year?

The Hoops continued their strong start to their Scottish Premiership campaign on Saturday, picking a 2-1 win away to Motherwell, thanks to goals from Luis Palma and Matt O'Riley. The first goal came late in the day, prior to the hosts equalising in stoppage time, before Brendan Rodgers' men won it at the death.

It means that Celtic are still top of the table after only dropping two points in their opening seven league games this season, with another title looking highly likely, as Rodgers looks to make a triumphant return to the club.

There are endless important players at Parkhead at the moment, and some figures will see their contracts expire next summer, including David Turnbull, Joe Hart and Scott Bain. Meanwhile, players such as James Forrest, Greg Taylor and James McCarthy will see their deals run out in 2025.

Now, an important update has emerged over the future of another Celtic player.

Celtic's Sead Haksabanovic

Which Celtic player wants to leave?

According to Football Insider, Sead Haksabanovic wants to quit Celtic permanently next year – he is currently on loan at Stoke City – bringing an end to his time at the club:

"Sead Haksabanovic wants to agree a permanent Celtic exit next year, sources have told Football Insider. Haksabanovic pushed for a loan move to Stoke City that was completed on deadline day after talks with club chiefs, where he felt he was getting mixed messages.

"The 24-year-old is now keen to secure a move away permanently either in January or next summer. Haksabanovic’s current contract at Parkhead runs until 2027 after joining from Rubin Kazan last summer but he has struggled for game time. Football Insider revealed on 24th August that the winger was seeking a move away from the club before the close of the transfer window. A week later, he secured a last-gasp temporary transfer to Stoke.

"The Montenegro international had been surprised by his lack of game time earlier this season, particularly following the exit of fellow winger Jota, and was unhappy that he was continuing to be overlooked for selection."

It would arguably be a shame to see Haksabanovic leave Celtic next year, considering he has done well across 42 appearances, scoring five goals and registering four assists from his attacking midfield role, also being described as both "brilliant" and "excellent" by former Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou.

That being said, the 24-year-old's importance to the cause has arguably diminished in recent times, considering he only made one appearance in the Scottish Premiership this season before joining Stoke on a temporary basis.

If Haksabanovic is unhappy about his lack of playing time and feels that a full-time move away is best for his development, Rodgers is unlikely to stand in his way, and it could be that an exit is the best outcome for all parties.

His current deal expires in the summer of 2027, putting Celtic in a strong bargaining position, so they could get good money for him next year, making this one to watch.

Substituição do Diniz e nova postura do São Paulo

Buttler makes easy work of Mumbai to lift Royals to fifth place

Buttler made a domineering, unbeaten 94 off 53 balls, his fifth consecutive IPL fifty, to vault Rajasthan Royals to fifth on the table

The Report by Varun Shetty13-May-20183:09

Agarkar: Mumbai need to look at Duminy’s place in the XI

Jos Buttler made his fifth consecutive IPL fifty – a feat previously managed only by Virender Sehwag – and Rajasthan Royals picked up their third consecutive win to rise to fifth place on the table, only a week after being on the verge of elimination. Buttler’s unbeaten 94 was much more free-flowing than some of his other recent fifties and cast away any possibilities of a stumble through the middle – the win was achieved with two overs to spare.Earlier in the evening, Mumbai Indians had thrown away the advantage that openers Evin Lewis and Suryakumar Yadav had provided them with an 87-run stand in 64 balls, collapsing dramatically through the middle overs to make fewer runs in the second half of the innings than the first. Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes shared the spoils as Mumbai finished with a sub-par 168 for 6 that put no real pressure on Royals during the chase. The result also meant Chennai Super Kings became the second team to confirm a spot in the playoffs.Rahane fined

Rajasthan Royals captain Ajinkya Rahane has been fined INR 12 lakh (USD 17,800 approx.) because his team had a slow over rate during their victory against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. The only other captain to be hit with an over-rate charge this season is RCB’s Virat Kohli.

Mumbai keep the spinners awayK Gowtham has generally been used in three-over spells by Rahane this season, and is almost a certainty with the new ball when the opponents have a left-hand opening batsman. Before Sunday, he’d taken five wickets at 6.88 during the Powerplay. But Suryakumar didn’t allow him to bowl at Lewis in the first over, getting two boundaries off him before allowing Lewis to face the last ball. Lewis then drilled the first legal delivery he faced past extra-cover to give Mumbai 14 off the first over.Gowtham only returned in the 12th over, when there were two left-handers at the crease. Lewis punished him off the last ball of that over as well, taking him for a six. He wouldn’t get a third over.Rajasthan Royals had been forced to drop their best bowler, Ish Sodhi, in their last two games since he had fallen ill. Sodhi and Gowtham had been vital to Royals’ attack, but with Gowtham neutralised early and replacement legspinner Shreyas Gopal getting a clear signal of Lewis’ destructive intent in his second over, which went for 17, Mumbai made sure only four overs of spin were bowled on the evening. The seamers deliverLewis and Suryakumar stuck to Mumbai’s template of relying on wickets in hand at the end: they were brisk, but not destructive. They kept the run rate above eight an over in the first ten, despite four overs going for six or fewer. However, a combination of strong bowling plans and loose shots allowed Royals to come back, beginning with two wickets off two balls from Archer in the 11th over – Suryakumar for 38 and Rohit Sharma for a golden duck. Both batsmen fell to short balls, and that seemed to be Royals’ plan, along with taking the pace off, for everyone but Lewis. To him, Royals’ seamers went full and wide outside off, right from the start. Lewis was in no trouble, picking up boundaries in all directions on the off side. It was a full and wide ball, however, that he ended up flaying straight to sweeper cover in the 14th over. At 108 for 3, Mumbai still had plenty of big hitters, but the offcutter accounted for Ishan Kishan and Krunal Pandya.Hardik Pandya made a valuable 36 off 21 in this context, but Mumbai only made 82 in their last ten overs. No fuss for RoyalsIt was fitting that Royals’ most difficult moments in the chase came around when D’Arcy Short was at the crease. The opener has now made 116 runs in seven innings this season, at an average of 16.42 and a strike rate of 116.16. On Sunday, his innings began with an inside edge against a Bumrah inswinger he knew little about, and ended four pokes later with an outside edge. Still, that first over yielded 13 runs.Buttler’s preference to blaze away in the Powerplay was put on hold by a good bowling line-up – although he managed to hit Krunal for a six and a four in the fifth over – but he rarely seemed fussed as he went about building a steady partnership with Rahane for the second wicket. Despite more solidity in the middle order than in their previous two games, Royals were content with taking it as deep as possible with their top order. And, on this occasion, it worked. The 95-run second-wicket stand saw them through till the 13th over. When Rahane fell, the required rate was just above nine. Then, Buttler and Sanju Samson went berserk. Having been unable to take it deep on previous occasions, they made merry in chopping down the required runs in no time.It began with Buttler slogging Hardik for six a ball after Rahane had been dismissed and following up with a drill down the ground, over his partner’s head, to immediately pull the momentum back. He repeated this in the next over against Bumrah. And before Mumbai knew it, Buttler had moved from 55 to 94 in 15 balls. Before they knew it, they had conceded 14, 14, 12, 9 and 18 from the 13th over to the 18th and allowed Royals to climb above them on the table.
