Hibernian Could Replace Porteous With Exciting New Signing

Hibernian manager Lee Johnson will be hoping to improve on the fifth-place finish his side achieved during the 2022/23 Premiership campaign, even though it did end up securing them a place in the qualifiers for the Europa Conference League.

Hibs have finished third only once in the top flight since the 2004/05 season and with the likes of Hearts and Aberdeen improving, it will be a major challenge, yet if Johnson manages to make some impressive signings, it certainly isn’t out of the realms of possibilities.

Dylan Levitt and Adam Le Fondre have arrived to bolster the attacking options, yet it is the defence which should be targeted as an area to improve on during the summer transfer window.

Johnson is making inroads with regard to this and is currently looking to sign Manchester United defender Will Fish on loan for the second successive season, following a solid maiden season in Edinburgh.

Are Hibs signing Will Fish?

According to The Scotsman, Hibs are keen on Fish returning to Easter Road in another temporary deal, with the manager remaining confident a move can happen.

He said: “We’re in constant contact with Manchester United and I am in constant contact with Will himself. I’m very positive about that one. But until it is signed, sealed and delivered it’s not one I can guarantee is going to happen.”

Although not yet finalised, the Hibs faithful should begin to get excited about this arrival, and Johnson may finally have a player who could replace Ryan Porteous following his departure in January.

How good is Will Fish?

The former Hibs defender left the club to join Championship side Watford having emerged through the youth academy and making over 150 appearances for the club across five and half seasons.

While his departure was somewhat inevitable given his undoubted talent, which allowed him to make his Scotland debut against Ukraine while still at Hibs, Johnson wasn’t prepared for him to leave halfway through the season.

His no-nonsense approach and tenacious nature is missed, yet Fish could slot back into the heart of the defence with ease during the 2023/24 season and replace Porteous.

Lee Johnson

Across just 21 Premiership appearances last season, the 6-foot starlet managed to provide an unlikely goal threat, netting three times, while also keeping five clean sheets and winning an impressive four duels per game – a 61% success rate.

To further put his impressive numbers into context, Fish ranked fourth among the squad for interceptions per game (one) and first for clearances per game (five) while also ranking fourth for accurate long balls per game (3.1), showcasing his ability to find a midfielder or a forward from a deep position.

Lauded as “outstanding” by the club's women's captain Joelle Murray following the stunning 6-0 success over Aberdeen in January, it’s evident that another spell at Hibs could see the player continue to develop.

With vital European qualifiers to come, the Easter Road side will be hoping to earn their right to play in the group stages of the Conference League, securing a major financial boost along with it.

Fish is still young and learning constantly, but he proved last term that he can shine in Scotland.

Moeen's ten-for leads England rout of SA

South Africa wrapped up England’s innings midway through the afternoon session on the fourth day, leaving themselves a target of 331 to win the first Test

The Report by Alan Gardner09-Jul-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:15

‘Moeen at his best when he is aggressive’ – Root

Do you remember the first time? Joe Root certainly will after England swept South Africa aside to mark his captaincy debut with a crushing victory as 19 wickets fell in a day at Lord’s. Moeen Ali, taking full licence of the attacking brief given to him by Root, ran through a mesmerised South Africa batting order to claim 6 for 53 on the way to a maiden ten-wicket haul in Tests.Having been set 331 to win the first Test, with almost 150 overs in which to get them, South Africa were unable to even take the match into a fifth day. With the pitch offering appreciable assistance for the spin of Moeen and Liam Dawson, they subsided to 119 all out in 36.4 overs, with Temba Bavuma’s 41-ball 21 providing the most prolonged resistance. Faf du Plessis, looking on from the balcony having returned to lead the team at Trent Bridge next week, was left with much to ponder.England unchanged for Trent Bridge

England have named an unchanged squad for Friday’s second Test against South Africa at Trent Bridge, in the wake of their 211-run victory at Lord’s.
“I didn’t know what to expect but what was pleasing was everything I asked of the lads they were very open to do and responded to it,” Joe Root, England’s captain, said.
“I wanted us to be proactive, to stay ahead of the game and when there was an opportunity, to take responsibility. Everyone at certain points did that and it can’t be a bad thing moving forward.”
Squad Joe Root (capt), Alastair Cook, Keaton Jennings, Gary Ballance, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Liam Dawson, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood, James Anderson, Toby Roland-Jones.

South Africa were in trouble early in their innings, going to tea on 25 for 3, with Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock their main hope of giving Root and England a fright. Only once had a team chased as many in the fourth innings to win a Lord’s Test, though Root may have recalled for a moment the occasion when he filled in as Yorkshire captain in 2014 and saw Middlesex ease to a target of 472 three wickets down on this ground. That gained him the nickname “craptain” in the Yorkshire dressing room, but it looks like England will have to come up with something more generous. In truth, Root did not have to resort to much in the way of tactical genius, as his two spinners bowled in tandem for 24 overs to finish off South Africa with time to spare on another sun-drenched evening in north London. South Africa had not lost a Test at Lord’s since 1960 but they broke that record in style. It meant their fightback during the first half of the day, when they claimed England’s last nine wickets for the addition of 114 runs became a distant memory. It could have been better still but Jonny Bairstow, who scored a vital half-century, was dropped on 7 as South Africa replicated the mistakes that were so costly to their chances in the first innings. After James Anderson had made the initial breakthrough, Heino Kuhn removed via a fine, diving catch from Bairstow down the leg side, Moeen picked up his first wicket when he brilliantly held a reflex return catch off Dean Elgar. South Africa’s stand-in captain must have feared the worst at that moment, and their fortunes sunk further when JP Duminy pulled Mark Wood straight to midwicket on the brink of tea.Moeen Ali celebrates his five-wicket haul as South Africa are rolled aside at Lord’s•Getty Images

The selection of Dawson, who made a pair with the bat, was not widely lauded beforehand but he delivered for Root when he plucked out the key wicket of Amla shortly after the interval. Moeen’s first four overs were maidens, bottling up South Africa from the Nursery End, and Dawson then produced a ripping delivery that pitched on middle and leg, spun past the groping bat and hit the back leg in front of off; Amla reviewed but in vain.De Kock and Bavuma dug in for more than 10 overs, lifting the score from 28 for 4 with a 36-run stand, but an increasingly confident England had Mo-mentum on their side. When de Kock tried to relieve some of the pressure by pulling, he only succeeded in dragging the ball into his front leg, from where it fizzed back into his stumps.Bavuma also fell trying to force an attacking shot to break England’s chokehold, a precise delivery hitting the top of off, and Moeen then had Theunis de Bruyn caught at slip and Keshav Maharaj bowled off an inside edge to record his maiden Test ten-for. Having contributed 87 to the first-innings total of 458, he became the first England player to score a fifty and take ten wickets in a Test since Ian Botham in 1980.Botham-like heroics will help keep most Test captains feeling chipper and, following his first-innings 190, Root could reflect on a perfect start to his tenure. It had been a slightly bumpier beginning to the day, however, as England lost nine wickets in 36.1 overs – though the consolation for Root was that the procession of batsmen returning to join him in the dressing room could attest to the increasing difficulty of the pitch.Bairstow was last man out, stumped off Maharaj, the spinner’s four-wicket haul a harbinger of what was to come. At lunch, England’s lead had been 279 but Bairstow and Wood scraped together valuable extra runs during a brisk ninth-wicket stand of 45. Apart from Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance, who added 10 and 11 respectively to their overnight scores, no other England batsmen managed to get into double-figures on the day.Maharaj might have removed Bairstow right at the start of his innings, only for Vernon Philander, who was fit to bowl after injuring his hand batting on the third day, to drop a simple catch at long-off. Maharaj claimed three of the seven wickets to fall in the first session, amid increasing signs of the pitch breaking up. The dismissal of Cook for 69, caught at cover attempting to lift the scoring, precipitated an England collapse of 4 for 10 in 39 balls – which would have been 5 for 19 had Bairstow’s offering been held. The evidence of the first over of the morning was that the Lord’s baize was by now a little rumpled. At least two deliveries from Philander kept low before the last jumped to hit Ballance on the glove. When Maharaj came into the attack shortly before the hour mark, the first ball of his second over went directly to slip out of the rough; the same over concluded with Root being bowled by one that didn’t turn.Cook and Ballance picked up initially in much the same mood as they guided England to the close on the third evening, a couple of tugboats towing their barge along the Thames. They had added a boundary apiece, taking their partnership to 59, before Cook suddenly weighed anchor and drove aerially into the covers, where Bavuma snaffled a sharp, diving catch.Morne Morkel continued his impressive Test by having Ballance caught behind with another exacting delivery that straightened from round the wicket and England slide’s continued with the dismissal of Root for 5 in the following over. Having seen Maharaj spin the ball sharply, Root swept a boundary but was then caught playing back and got an inside-edge on to his stumps.Ben Stokes did not have much time for reconnaissance, pinned lbw for 1 by a delivery that shot through low from Rabada. Stokes started walking as soon as it hit him, while Rabada – suspended for the next Test due to his outburst after dismissing Stokes in the first innings – kept his counsel. That left England 149 for 5 and it ought to have been 158 for 6 when Bairstow lofted Maharaj towards Philander, only for the fielder to drop it on to the rope. He gestured towards the skies, seeming to suggest that Spidercam had distracted him – but little could excuse the scale of South Africa’s defeat.

Chelsea Closing In On Signing Of Another 20-Year-Old Forward

Chelsea are thought to be closing in on the signing of Montpellier forward Elye Wahi, according to an exciting update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Who is Elye Wahi?

The 20-year-old has emerged as an exciting young player in France, catching the eye with his attacking performances for Montpellier, having broken into the senior side from the B team back in 2020.

In total, Wahi has scored 32 goals in 91 appearances for his current club, also chipping in with nine assists, but it was last season that really saw him go up a gear. He netted 19 times in just 33 Ligue 1 appearances – only 29 of those were starts – and it was a further sign that the Frenchman is emerging as a big talent.

The three-cap France Under-21 international is out of contract at Montpellier in the summer of 2025, so it increasingly looks as though he will depart in the coming weeks, allowing the French outfit to receive good money for his services rather than lose him for nothing next year.

Chelsea have emerged as the standout candidates to sign Wahi sooner rather than later, and a fresh claim suggests that the transfer could be agreed in the near future.

Todd Boehly watches on from his seat at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea play in the Premier League.

Are Chelsea signing Elye Wahi?

Taking to Twitter, Romano claimed that Chelsea are making strong progress in their efforts to sign Wahi this summer, with talks believed to be at an advanced stage:

"Understand Chelsea are now advancing in talks to sign Elye Wahi — agreement getting closer, new negotiations round scheduled with Montpellier.

"Chelsea plan includes loan move for Wahi this season then CFC future. Chelsea want to accelerate next week as there’s competition."

This is a hugely exciting update for Chelsea supporters, with Wahi a long-term prospect who could grow into a fantastic attacking player at Stamford Bridge, having already made such a positive impact.

That being said, he has already shown that he can star in one of Europe's top five leagues, so perhaps he should be viewed as an effective squad player from the off, helping fill the Blues' issues up front rather than being loaned out. The west Londoners struggled with the likes of Kai Havertz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leading the line last season.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has lauded the "constant progress" that Wahi has made in a short space of time, and he has also said that the 2022/23 campaign was "a truly incredible season for the 20-year-old Montpellier jewel".

For too long, it has felt as though Chelsea haven't been focusing on youth enough, with their squad growing old with the likes of Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante and Aubameyang in it in recent times, but it is encouraging to see the club potentially bringing in a top-quality youngster who can be a big part of the club's success under Mauricio Pochettino for many more years to come.

The Argentine has always been a keen advocate of youth, as he showed during his spell in charge at Tottenham, helping a young Harry Kane and Dele Alli burst onto the scene, and it will be fascinating to see how he uses Wahi, should Chelsea get a deal over the line.

Hambantota groundstaff stripped of pants, SLC to investigate

SLC will launch an inquiry into the decision to strip Hambantota Stadium groundstaff of their branded SLC trousers – which they had been wearing – following the fifth ODI against Zimbabwe

Sri Lanka Cricket has taken a harsh view of the decision to strip Hambantota Stadium groundstaff of their branded SLC trousers – which they had been wearing – following the fifth ODI against Zimbabwe. The groundstaff had been given SLC uniforms to wear while performing their duties at the venue, but had largely not expected to have to hand the clothing back. Many, however, reported only being paid after handing over their trousers, leaving them in only their underwear. The groundstaff were casual workers hired from the venue’s locality.”They only paid us for our three days worth of work after taking our clothes,” one groundsman told after being stripped of his trousers. Another said: “They hadn’t told us to come prepared with another set of clothes. They asked us to hand over the trousers, so we had no choice but to do that.”Sri Lanka Cricket has since officially apologised to “those subjected to this ignominy” and said that “stern action will be taken against those responsible”, following the conclusion of an inquiry. On Wednesday, SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala condemned the decision to take the trousers back from the groundstaff, in strong terms.*”That was a very low thing that happened,” Sumathipala said. “These people come to the ground because of their love of cricket, and to do a service while watching the match. They aren’t just there for the money. If rains come, they close up the whole ground within minutes, and then take the covers off again. They are our colleagues, not our slaves. The board didn’t know anything about this. We had sent that clothing out to our provincial associations, but hadn’t taken a decision to get that clothing back.”As Sri Lanka Cricket has adopted the practice of covering the entire ground in the event of rain, the board usually hires dozens of local workers on a day-wage basis whenever a match is to be played at a nearby venue. Only recently have they required these workers to wear a full uniform.*This story was updated with Sumathipala’s reaction

Everton Could Make Move For "Superb" £5.8k-p/w Star

Everton have been tracking Oumar Solet, and they could be set to make a move for the RB Salzburg defender this summer, according to a recent report from The Daily Mail.

What's the latest Everton transfer news?

Everton boss Sean Dyche has recently admitted he has found it difficult to bring in some of his key targets this summer:

"It's a tough market," he said. "There is only so much that we can do, so we are working very hard – I can assure everyone of that – to construct deals that can work.

"There is no exact moment until it's over the line. There have been situations where we have been into where we thought we were going to get it over the line and we don't – that's the way it goes.

A new defender remains of interest to Dyche, with it recently being reported that Mason Holgate is expected to move on this summer, however the manager is set to miss out on Facundo Gonzalez, who he became keen on during the U20 World Cup.

As such, the Toffees could now turn their attention to another young defender, with The Daily Mail reporting they have been tracking Solet, who they could make a move for at some point.

Newcastle United are also interested in signing the Frenchman, and the Premier League duo may hold an advantage over the likes of Torino and Inter Milan in the race for his signature, as he has admitted he is keen on a move to England, saying:

‘I have a lot of ambitions, to be honest. I’m just on my way – for sure the Premier League excites me a lot,’

‘I feel it’s a league that I can perform in really well and it can bring me to the top. It’s probably the best league in the would. I feel if I have the chance it’s going to help make me become the top player I want to be."

What position does Oumar Solet play?

The Red Bull Salzburg star has most commonly been utilised at centre-back throughout his career so far, however he has also slotted in at defensive midfield on occasion, indicating he could be a versatile option for Dyche.

Speaking about his key strengths, the 23-year-old has said: "I’m a quick player and feel like I’m strong. I think I’m a player who is ready for the 1v1 situations – I like to compete with strikers. This is my mindset.

"For any team I feel I can bring something with my quality and intelligence."

FC Salzburg's Oumar Solet

The £5.8k-per-week defender has also been hailed as "superb" by journalist Zach Lowy, for the way in which he tracks opposing forwards' movements, and drives forward with the ball.

Solet already has experience playing in the Champions League with RB Salzburg, and with Newcastle also in the race for his signature, it may be difficult for the Toffees to tempt him into a move.

However, if Dyche is able to bring the 6 foot 3 titan to Goodison Park, there is every indication he would be a solid addition to the squad.

Arsenal: Arteta Could Sign Own Gvardiol In £34m-rated "Warrior"

Arsenal may have won the Community Shield over their rivals Manchester City, but it will take much more than that to keep Pep Guardiola subdued…

Has Josko Gvardiol gone to Manchester City?

Especially given the reinforcements he has already brought in to bolster a treble-winning outfit, capped off by the recent £77m addition of Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol.

As a frightening young star, he is set to take the Premier League by storm, with his pace, power and ball-playing capabilities second to none.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

And yet, the Cityzens could still be set to help out Mikel Arteta, should they opt to offset some of that transfer fee by offloading Aymeric Laporte to the Gunners.

With just two years left on his deal at the Etihad, Football Transfers value the Spain international at a reasonable €42.3m (£34m).

How good is Aymeric Laporte?

The 29-year-old titan boasts vast experience at this level and has been a true stalwart for the treble-winning Manchester outfit across his five years at the club.

Since joining for a £57m fee from Athletic Bilbao, the defensive titan has amassed 179 appearances for the Citizens, starring as part of five Premier League title victories, as well as the numerous other domestic honours attained.

Should he bring that winning mentality to the Emirates, along with his top form that was on show not too long ago, he could actually prove to be the catalyst that helps them topple Guardiola’s side.

Especially given the fact that he could actually emulate, or even surpass the talent Gvardiol is set to bring to his new side, as an alternative who shares the same skillset and preferred left foot.

The 21-year-old has already been lauded as one of the greatest in his role, with national team boss Zlatko Dalic branding him the “best central defender in the world”.

FBref helps to emphasise such a claim, as he can be compared directly to others in his position across Europe. He still ranks in the top 1% for passes attempted per 90, the top 18% for progressive passes per 90 and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90.

josko-gvardiol

There are few on the planet as comfortable with the ball at his feet as Gvardiol, yet Laporte marks one of them.

He compares similarly against the same group, instead ranking in the top 1% for passes attempted, progressive passes and progressive carries all per 90, via FBref.

This form was no better exemplified during the 2021/22 league season, where he maintained a 7.12 average rating, buoyed by his 15 clean sheets earned, 95% pass accuracy, one tackle and 1.8 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

Journalist Bill DiFilippo even took to Twitter to simply claim: “Laporte is a warrior”.

He is steely, domineering, and most importantly adept at playing out from the back. Also, given he is eight years Gvardiol’s senior, is much more prepared for mounting an instant title charge with his potential new club.

Whilst they are at wildly differing stages of their careers, Arsenal could secure their own version of the left-footed former RB Leipzig star by snatching an out-of-favour ace from under Guardiola’s nose.

Kent and Hampshire have been invited to take part in West Indies’ Regional Super50 competition, the domestic one-day tournament, which is set to take place early next year ahead of the start of the 2018 English season. If the offer is taken up, it will be the second successive year Kent have been part of the competition. They finished third in Group A during the 2016-17 tournament with three wins from their eight matches.Last year’s edition started in late January and if either county did take part it would require a month-long stay in the Caribbean which would come with significant associated costs. The region has become a regular feature on the pre-season scene for English counties. There could be a significant presence for English cricketers in the Caribbean ahead of the 2018 English summer with the Lions touring for four-day and one-day series against West Indies A in February and March.
