Pakistan cruise to ruthless nine-wicket win

Pakistan, in their first T20 under Sarfraz Ahmed’s captaincy, secured a thumping nine-wicket victory with a massive 31 deliveries to spare

New captain, new Pakistan? It’s always dangerous to look too far ahead as far as their cricket is concerned, but after one night in Manchester Sarfraz Ahmed has a 100% record as T20 skipper. It can be difficult at the end of a long tour to lift for a one-off T20 – the Super Series, of course, had already been decided lest anyone forget – but, amid the most frenzied atmosphere of the tour, which was marred by late pitch invasions, Pakistan secured a thumping nine-wicket victory with a massive 31 deliveries to spare. They produced their most vibrant bowling and fielding display of the limited-overs leg of the trip to restrict England, who fielded the side which played the World T20 final in April, to 135 for 7: just 58 came off the final ten overs and only three boundaries were struck after the Powerplay. The chase was a canter. Neither Sharjeel Khan nor Khalid Latif needed to bother with much running, by the end of the fourth over they had equalled England’s paltry tally of 10 fours. Both reached their fifties with sixes, Sharjeel off 30 balls and Latif, who only flew in for this match, brought up his maiden half-century off 34 deliveries. With the ball Imad Wasim and Wahab Riaz, the latter smartly held back for the latter half of the innings as he bowled all his overs from the 11th onwards, produced the telling contributions. Imad, who bowled the first over then returned after the Powerplay (and a clonk on the head at point) did not concede a boundary and removed both England openers. Wahab generated fearsome speed, upwards of 95mph on occasion, mixed with smart changes of pace, to leave the middle order in a tangle. After a couple of early overs of assessing conditions, England initially made good progress as Jason Roy and Alex Hales took them to 53 without loss in the Powerplay. Then Roy was lbw trying to reverse sweep Imad and from there England almost went into reverse. Hales fell slog-sweeping at Imad, as he did at Lord’s, and next ball Joe Root uppercut Hasan Ali to third man.Jos Buttler, who missed the final two ODIs with a hamstring niggle, looked in the mood for a rebuilding job, but 9 off four balls became 16 off 14 after two tight overs by Wahab and Hasan. He then carved the first delivery of Wahab’s second over to deep point.Neither Ben Stokes or Eoin Morgan could get going and the harder England tried to hit the ball the worse off they became. England’s batting depth came to their aid in the World T20, most notably against Afghanistan, but there was no late charge on this occasion. When David Willey clubbed Sohail Tanvir through the leg side it was the first boundary for 7.3 overs – and it would be the only one of the final 10 overs, an extraordinary statistic whether you are looking at from an England or Pakistan perspective.Given England’s struggles to find the boundary after the first six overs, it felt a waste to see Liam Plunkett, who has shown this season he can clear the rope from the outset, only come in with three deliveries remaining and end up not facing a ball.Pakistan dealt exclusively in boundaries until the third ball of the third over when Latif, who had taken 20 off Chris Jordan’s first over, tapped a single off Plunkett. The bowler was so shocked, that two balls late he flung a bouncer for five wides down the leg side. After the fours came the sixes. Sharjeel deposited Stokes, playing his first T20I since the World T20 final, over long leg then twice took Adil Rashid over the leg-side boundary. Rashid, at least, had a modicum of revenge when another attempted smite down the ground was skied to cover. He should have had a second wicket, too, but Buttler missed a stumping chance off Babar Azam. It summed up England’s night, as their season ended with a whimper.

Stand-in captain Assad Vala scored an unbeaten 144 in the first innings to set up Papua New Guinea’s 199-run win over Namibia at Port Moresby in their first Intercontinental-Cup match at home. It was PNG’s second win in the competition, moving them past Scotland and Hong Kong into fourth place with 40 points from four games and putting them just six points behind Netherlands for third.Vala, who took over captaincy for the injured Jack Vare, elected to bat and scored his second century in as many I-Cup matches after making 120 in January against Ireland. It set up PNG’s first-innings total of 311. Namibia struggled in reply after medium-pacer Norman Vanua took 3 for 39 to reduce the visitors to 52 for 6.Captain Sarel Burger produced an unbeaten half-century to keep Vanua at bay and added 52 for the eighth wicket with JJ Smit. Part-time bowler Lega Siaka broke the stand, removing Smit lbw for his maiden first-class wicket and then finished off the tail to hold Namibia to 146, giving first-innings points to PNG with a lead of 165.PNG elected not to enforce the follow-on and Vani Morea opened their second innings with a brisk 61 off 86 balls. Left-arm spinner Bernard Scholtz kept Namibia in the match by ripping through PNG’s middle order to take 6 for 65, to finish with 11 for 170 in the match. His effort helped keep the hosts to 189 in their second innings, setting up a target of 355 for Namibia. As they had done in the first innings, Vanua and Siaka did most of the damage early. Vanua helped reduce Namibia to 14 for 4. Siaka finished with 4 for 38, and a match haul of 7 for 54.

Aston Villa Plotting Busy Transfer Window Despite Rejection

Aston Villa are planning for an exciting summer transfer window despite Mateu Alemany choosing not to join their recruitment team, according to journalist Alex Crook.

What's the latest transfer news involving Matheu Alemany?

According to Birmingham Live, Alemany had agreed to take up a senior recruitment role in the West Midlands before performing a U-turn and staying at Barcelona for the foreseeable future.

Alemany spoke about his situation via DAZN, stating: "Aston Villa has an impressive institutional and sporting project and one of the best coaches in Europe, but after personal reflection, my place is here. I am committed to this club, which is the biggest in the world. I want to be here and the president wants it to be there. I hope it's for a long time."

As cited by the Shropshire Star, Aston Villa manager Emery was quick to point out that he doesn't believe that this development will harm their transfer business, commenting: “It was two weeks ago we were speaking about the possibility for him (Alemany) to come here. It was a positive but, in the end, he’s not coming. We will continue in our project and build up as a club and a team. He (Alemany) is a very good professional with experience. I know him, I sometimes meet with him. But we’re focused here with the players we have in front. We will try to analyse someone to help us. But now, Mateu Alemany will stay in Barcelona.”

Movement on player outgoings has already started to happen at Villa Park, as veteran Ashley Young and goalkeeper Jed Steer will leave the club in the off-season due to contract expiration, as per Transfermarkt.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Crook still thinks that Aston Villa will go all out in the market once it opens for business later this month.

Crook stated: "I'm expecting them to be one of the most active clubs, although I am a bit suspicious about why Alemany, who was going to come in as sporting director, decided to stay at Barcelona.

"Maybe there was a change of budgets, because I was told a couple of weeks ago that they were going to go really big, Villa. Let's see who comes in as sporting director. I think they are keen to kick on, to build on what Unai Emery has done in a short period of time. I think it could be an exciting future for the club."

Who will Aston Villa target in the summer transfer window?

Aston Villa have already started to make inroads on summer transfer targets and Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has emerged as a potential loan target, as per FootballTransfers.

The Athletic also report that Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans, who is soon to be a free agent, has also emerged as someone who could join Aston Villa in the off-season.

As per The Daily Express, Tottenham Hotspur outcast Giovani Lo Celso is on the radar at Villa Park and could be brought in to freshen up their engine room.

Cited by The Independent, Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes is another potential addition as Emery looks to acquire some high-profile names ahead of 2023/24.

Less grass expected for this year's day-night Test pitch

Adelaide Oval curator Damian Hough has said the pitch this year will have less grass than for last year’s day-night Test

Daniel Brettig in Adelaide22-Nov-2016

Curator Damian Hough with the pitch for this week’s day-night Test•Daniel Brettig

Adelaide Oval’s carefully prepared day/night Test pitch has been tweaked as a result of last summer’s day three finish to offer less to bowlers – two millimetres less to be precise. The height of the grass on the surface was a major talking point in the aftermath of the inaugural floodlit Test, with Australia’s captain Steven Smith and his New Zealand counterpart Brendon McCullum both reasoning the experimental pink ball would be no worse off for more extensive use of the lawn mower. What would change, though, was the amount of seam movement on offer to the bowlers. Batsmen, administrators, broadcasters and sponsors would all prefer a match that lasts until the fourth evening at least, meaning the seamers who prospered last year will likely be the chief parties disappointed by the curator Damian Hough’s latest creation.”Preparation-wise still leaving a bit of grass on it,” he said. “We’re bringing the starting height down and the finished height will be down another 2mm from last year.”In review of last year, which was a good learning experience, leaving the grass on it assisted the quicks a little bit more. We were really happy with the game but feel a couple millimetres less will hopefully still keep it a good contest between bat and ball – that’s what we’re after.”It mightn’t nip around quite as much. You still think it will hoop around a bit at night with the ball but we thought maybe we’ll get that balance a bit better.”Hough’s work with Adelaide’s drop-in surfaces has evolved considerably since they were first installed for the summer of 2013-14. The surface then was prepared to be dry after the fashion of Adelaide’s original square, but a lack of the desired deterioration pushed Hough to take a different approach in which thatchy grass coverage could assist both pacemen and spinners throughout a match.”Our game plan with leaving the grass on is to leave a coarse thatchy grass, the ball will bite into for the quicks it should also do the same for the spinner,” Hough said. “We’ve ben doing that for two years now and the feedback has been the spinners have still been able to get purchase out of that grass and get a bit of turn.”The grass we leave on it, we’re not going to get a lot of breaking up. We haven’t had that for 3-4 years. We’re going down that path, don’t get that natural deterioration so we’ll get the grass to assist the ball biting in and moving around a little bit.”While Hough has been lauded about his work with drop-in surfaces, he admitted there was still much unknown about them, for wickets can take years of use to mature in their characteristics.”It’s still new. Is it the drop-in pitch that’s preventing the pitch from deteriorating or is it a brand new wicket area and brand new soil that needs time to mature? Who knows,” he said. “We’ve got different pitches that we’ve remade, or rebuilt some drop-in pitches with a different grass variety that is opening up. We’ll keep working on it and keep assessing it and adjusting as we see fit.”Where we’re at now, we’re really comfortable with the feedback from all the visiting players, coaches at Shield level has been really positive. We’re trying to produce a pitch with a really good contest from bat and ball.”

Arsenal Transfers: Arteta Could Sign New Van Persie in £150k-p/w Target

Arsenal have shifted their focus onto another Premier League star amid long-standing interest in Declan Rice…

What's the latest on Kai Havertz to Arsenal?

That's according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who took to Twitter to offer a fresh transfer target of interest to Mikel Arteta.

He wrote:

"Arsenal are in talks to sign Kai Havertz after positive contacts on player side — he’s keen on the move. Chelsea want around £75m for Havertz now, Arsenal will not pay that amount. Real Madrid talks currently off. Arsenal priority: bid for Declan Rice soon".

Whilst this deal seems far from completion, it marks the start of a startling saga that has seemingly developed from nowhere. Edu seems keen on bolstering his striking options, given Gabriel Jesus' injury woes from the previous term.

The German international has just two years left on his £150k-per-week deal, which could tempt Chelsea to sanction an exit below the aforementioned valuation.

Could Kai Havertz replicate any Arsenal legends?

With a tall slender body but a grace and comfort on the ball, Havertz is something of a physical marvel as an attacking threat.

Having risen to prominence in his homeland, starring for Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, the 24-year-old notched 18 goals and assisted a further nine in his final year before moving to Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard saw fit to unload £71m to tempt the youngster to join.

His goalscoring prowess was unlike most other number tens, and yet he has found himself somewhat lost among the vast managerial upheaval in West London.

Despite recording 47 goal contributions across those three years, including a goal in their Champions League final triumph, pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has still questioned his place in this side, noting:

"Look at Havertz. I mean, he saw two managers off. He's not doing anything. He's not a No 9, he's not a No 10. He's not holding the ball up, he's not scoring goals."

Perhaps a move to north London, where the conditions are far more favourable, could see him finally realise the immense potential that has gone awry.

After all, his physique does resemble that of a former Emirates favourite Robin van Persie, as well as the goalscoring talents of his past having matched some seasons of the lethal Dutchman. For example, during the 2018/19 campaign, Havertz scored 17 league goals from a no.10 sort of role.

Meanwhile, across his sprawling career in England, the former Manchester United striker would score 18 or more in three separate campaigns, often hitting double figures in the league too.

robin-van-persie-arsenal

This, combined with their shared technique and quality left foot makes them all the more similar, as Thomas Tuchel outlined:

"I see a bit of Dennis Bergkamp, Robin Van Persie, [Dimitar] Berbatov kind of player. He can play in the half position because he has good runs, but also feels free from the nine and creates overload to one side."

Although his career has not yet panned out as planned, Arteta has already proven his ability to make something out of nothing with his current Arsenal project.

The Emirates could well be a perfect new home to transform Havertz into the player many thought he would become.

Man United Make Contact To Sign £154k-p/w "Monster"

Manchester United have made contact with Inter Milan over a move to sign Nicolo Barella, according to reports.

What’s the latest Man United transfer news?

The Red Devils appear to be preparing for a busy few months in the transfer market despite the ongoing takeover saga at Old Trafford. There could be plenty of additions to Erik ten Hag’s side all across the pitch, from a new goalkeeper to a marquee attacker.

However, midfield appears to be an area where Ten Hag and United want to strengthen, especially with Scott McTominay telling those at Old Trafford he wants to quit and Fred being linked with a move to Fulham.

One midfielder who Man United appear desperate to sign is Chelsea’s Mason Mount. Personal terms have already been agreed with the England international, however, striking a deal with their Premier League rivals has proven tricky so far.

The Red Devils had an opening £40m offer turned down by Chelsea, and an improved £50m bid also rejected. Meanwhile, West Ham's Declan Rice is another target, with Man United ready to rival Arsenal in the race for his services with a player-plus-cash offer.

Alongside Mount and Rice, a move for Barella appears as if it could be one to keep an eye on, with an update emerging over the last 48 hours.

Sport Witness relayed news from Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport regarding Man United and Barella. They claimed that Old Trafford officials have made the first move by making ‘interested phone calls’ to Inter Milan.

A move to Manchester over Newcastle is seen as a ‘far more attractive’ destination, with Inter Milan wanting at least €80m ahead of a potential deal.

Who is Nicolo Barella?

Barella, once hailed "top-class" by Jurgen Klopp, is primarily a central midfielder who can also play in holding or attacking midfield roles if needed. The 26-year-old appears to be at the peak of his powers with a career-high €75m Transfermarkt valuation and currently earns £154,000-a-week.

The Italy international made a permanent move to Inter back in 2020 following a successful loan spell from Cagliari and has gone on to make 187 appearances for the Champions League finalists, scoring 20 goals and registering 44 assists.

Described as a "monster" in the media because of his energetic displays, United could see Barella as the perfect box-to-box midfielder to play alongside Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, with the player ranking in the 92nd percentile for progressive passes and non-penalty goals and 89th percentile for carries into the final third, as per FBref, showing how he can create, score and dribble.

Lehmann gives Mitchell Marsh licence to attack

Australia coach Darren Lehmann diverges from Justin Langer’s view of allrounder Mitchell Marsh’s role in the team

Daniel Brettig08-Dec-2016

Darren Lehmann on Mitchell Marsh: “My personal opinion is when he’s playing shots he’s a lot more dangerous”•Getty Images

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has hinted at a difference of opinion with his possible successor Justin Langer over the future of Mitchell Marsh, whose recent struggles in the Test team have been attributed to a lack of mental clarity over his best means of success.Marsh made a halting start against New Zealand in Canberra on Tuesday before freeing his arms to devastating effect, and Lehmann said this was the way he wanted to see the allrounder bat in the future – as a destructive middle-order player capable of changing the momentum of a game. However he also indicated that there had been plenty of people in Marsh’s ear in recent times with differing views as to how he should bat, and pointed towards the Perth Scorchers and Western Australia state team – both coached by Langer – as places where that may have emanated from.”It’s good to see him make some runs,” Lehmann said of Marsh. “He struggled the first 13-14 balls and then he got one away and away he went. I think he said yesterday he’s got to play with a bit more freedom, and he certainly is a highly talented young player, and he’s got to find his way.”You’ve got so many coaches and different views – a Scorchers view, a WACA view, Australia view – and different coaches around the place. For him he’s got to work out what works for him, and my personal opinion is when he’s playing shots he’s a lot more dangerous.”Langer, who coached the Australian ODI team to a victorious triangular series in the Caribbean earlier this year and is widely thought to be in line to succeed Lehmann in the future, has made a point of encouraging Marsh to be used up the batting order. He also spoke publicly about his belief that Marsh had the potential to be a top-four batsman in all formats – a role that would entail a more sophisticated method than the power hitting he exhibited at Manuka Oval.”He can easily become a four or five in all formats of the game,” Langer said earlier this year. “That’s what he’ll be aspiring to do and he’s certainly got the ability to do that. With maturity I think he could easily do that in all formats. He’s that talented.”Marsh has batted in the top five for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield this season without once passing 50, and for his part has said he now thinks he is best suited simply trying to play with freedom.Mitchell Marsh smashed 76 not out off 40 balls against New Zealand in Canberra•Getty Images

“I’ve had a few conversations with Boof [Lehmann] … I think in red-ball cricket the last couple of years I probably haven’t played my natural game,” Marsh said this week. “I’ve tried to be a batsman that bats time but for me I’m a hitter of the cricket ball and for the next few months I think I’m going to bat like that and really back myself. I might get out a few ugly ways at times, but I feel it will give me the best chance to score runs and score big runs.”When you’re not scoring runs you tend to try plenty of different things in the nets to make something work. The last week or two I’ve simplified it to watching the ball as hard as I can and then letting my natural ability take over. I felt much better once I’ve done that and really just clearing my head.”Lehmann, meanwhile, was complimentary of Glenn Maxwell’s attitude in the wake of his team fine for comments about Victoria captain Matthew Wade. Maxwell may be slotted back into the Australian ODI team for the third match against New Zealand at the MCG on Friday as Lehmann looks to shuffle his options and potentially rest one of his fast bowlers.”He’s been fantastic. Full credit to him the way he’s handled it and the way he’s been around the group in getting prepared to play each and every game,” Lehmann said of Maxwell. “We’ve named the team quite late both times because we’ve only got down to the ground just before. He’s missed out at the last minute and he’s handled that really well. For him he’s just got to be ready to play, if he gets his opportunity then away he goes.”More light was also shed on the “leadership group” that elected to fine Maxwell. Lehmann said he had instituted a group of senior players in each of the teams he had coached, starting with Brad Haddin, Shane Watson and Peter Siddle four years ago. The group is now comprised of David Warner, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, with input too from the captain, Steven Smith.”I’ve had that wherever I’ve gone really,” Lehmann said. “I think that’s a good idea because sometimes they might have a problem with the coach or the skipper, so it’s a good idea to have those senior players, and the skipper working closely with that leadership group, as staff we sit back and let them go with that.”It gives them responsibility for how they want the team to run and perform and act and all those sorts of things. We’ve had that the last four years, it’s just chopped and changed depending on who’s playing and selection a little bit. Now that we’ve got a core group, they can pretty much do it and run it.”It just gives the players a voice to us if they’re not happy or want to change something they can go through that. Some players aren’t happy to deal with it direct [with me] and that’s fine too.”
