Glasner backed for Spurs manager role

Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner could potentially become Antonio Conte’s replacement at Tottenham, according to journalist Christian Falk.

The Lowdown: Conte is on the verge

All is not well at Spurs at the moment, with Conte openly calling out key figures after last weekend’s 3-3 draw away to Southampton in the Premier League.

The Italian has cut a frustrated figure for big chunks of the 2022/23 campaign, while his own health has also been an issue, and it feels like a matter of when he leaves Tottenham, rather than if.

Conte is contracted to Spurs until the end of the season, at which point an extension won’t be signed, but he could even leave before then, with a replacement arguably needed now, in order to secure a top-four finish.

Departed former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann is a candidate to replace Conte, but Glasner has also emerged as a contender.

The 48-year-old has managed Frankfurt since 2021 and won the Europa League with them last season, beating Rangers on penalties in the final.

The Latest: Falk talks up move

Speaking to Caught Offside, Falk talked up Spurs’ potential appointment of Glasner as Conte’s successor:

“The news that Thomas Tuchel is joining Bayern Munich is good news for Oliver Glasner.

“They clearly like German coaches over in Tottenham! A few years before, they tried to get Hansi Flick, now they’ve tried to go for Tuchel, they’ve got Glasner on the list; he’s Austrian, of course, but German-speaking and German-thinking.

“The point is that Glasner is thinking about this move, which is why he’s yet to sign a new contract. Frankfurt have tried to extend his contract but there are ongoing discussions about the squad.

“Glasner wants to make the next step and get better with Frankfurt. If you don’t get better with Frankfurt, you can get better with another team and get a better squad; these are the discussions between Markus Krosche and Glasner.”

The Verdict: Could be a great option

Glasner could be a very exciting option for Spurs, either in the coming weeks or this summer, with the Austrian doing such an impressive job at Frankfurt, guiding them to sixth place in the Bundesliga currently.

The north Londoners’ barren run without silverware is much-publicised, and he could be seen as someone who can come in and end that drought, having won the Europa League last season.

Some of Spurs’ matches under Conte this season have been dull, and while Glasner adopts a counter-attacking style, it has more purpose than what supporters have had to sit through at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season.

Glasner could also be a cheaper option than Nagelsmann, which could appeal, and while the latter has some doubters after his spell at Bayern, the former’s reputation is very much in-tact right now.

Rangers Hit The Jackpot On £450k Dynamo

Alex McLeish endured a very Jekyll and Hyde spell as manager of Glasgow Rangers, with periods of success intersected with some of the worst seasons in the Ibrox side's recent history, however, he must surely go down as one of the club’s finest-ever bosses considering the financial constraints he had to work with.

The Scot won five of the first six trophies available to him, including a stunning treble during the 2002/03 season, yet the next campaign was woeful as the Light Blues finished empty-handed while having to resort to free transfers and selling some of their best assets, notably Barry Ferguson.

Come the summer of 2004, it appeared as though Celtic would begin an era of dominance given they had just cruised to the league title months before and McLeish would have to do something very special to reclaim it.

He managed to lure Dado Prso to the club on a free transfer and signed Dundee forward Nacho Novo for just £450k. Little did he know that the Spanish dynamo would become one of his finest-ever signings with the Gers certainly hitting the jackpot with his arrival.

How did Nacho Novo perform at Rangers?

The 5 foot 7 forward enjoyed a wonderful six seasons at the Glasgow side where he won three league titles and five domestic cups.

He will certainly go down as a fan favourite and although he wasn't the most talented player on the pitch, the Spaniard had an endless determination which saw him chase down every lost cause and fight for every ball.

The forward netted the title clincher against Hibs in 2005 as Rangers sealed an unlikely league triumph, forming a ‘little and large’ partnership with Croatian giant Prso and despite the following two seasons ending trophyless, he still scored plenty.

Under Walter Smith, Novo often found himself deployed out wide, yet he didn’t complain and got on with the task at hand, earning the respect of every supporter.

Nacho Novo holds the Scottish Cup trophy for Rangers

Novo finished his Rangers career in 2010 and ended up scoring 71 goals in 255 appearances, even finding the back of the net against Celtic six times, enduring cult hero status as a result.

The Gers hit the jackpot on the striker, with every goal he scored costing the club just £6k, proving he was a wonderful investment.

Every team needs a player who won't just score goals, but will also show the utmost commitment. The former Gers man certainly fits the bill regarding these traits.

Rangers Had A Howler Over £1.1m Flop

Alex McLeish must surely go down as a legend amongst the Glasgow Rangers supporters for his four-and-a-half-year spell in charge of the Ibrox side.

He led the team to seven major trophies during that time, all while fighting constant financial restraints which limited his spending severely, meaning he had to largely rely on free transfers and a variety of loan moves.

The likes of Dado Prso, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Nacho Novo all arrived for either nothing or small transfer fees, and contributed towards McLeish’s second title triumph in 2004/05 as they pipped Celtic on the final day of the season in dramatic circumstances.

Along with these aforementioned signings, he also made one of his biggest blunders in the transfer market by shelling out £1.1m on Serbian midfielder Dragan Mladenovic, which proved to be a disaster.

How did Dragan Mladenovic perform at Rangers?

The player arrived from Red Star Belgrade having clearly impressed McLeish to fork out that sum during a time when money was tight, and Mladenovic had also proved his credentials on the international stage, winning seven caps for his country (he would win 17 overall), and it looked as though he could improve the midfield.

Despite the hype and early promise upon his arrival, the Serb went on to make just nine appearances for the Light Blues, failing to record any telling contributions in front of goal.

He moved to Real Sociedad on loan in January 2005, making 12 La Liga appearances for the club in a bid to try and force his way into the Rangers side ahead of the 2005/06 campaign, but it clearly wasn’t enough.

Mladenovic eventually forced a move back to Red Star before jumping ship to join South Korean side Incheon United, where he enjoyed much more game-time compared to his spell in Europe.

Overall, his nine Rangers appearances cost the club over £120k per match – and this was money the club could not afford to throw away.

Alex McLeish for Rangers

It was an unmitigated disaster of a signing and one McLeish could look back on and say it was potentially up there as one of his worst while in charge of the Glasgow side.

Mladenovic is currently back in his homeland occupying the role of director of Red Star’s youth academy, and despite injuries not helping his cause, he will perhaps be largely forgettable when it comes to players of that era, as well as a colossal waste of money.

£80k-p/w Chelsea Star Could Sign New Blues Deal

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount could now sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge this summer, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Why is Mount's Chelsea future in doubt?

The 24-year-old's future has been a big talking point of late, with his current contract expiring in 2024 and no sign of an extension being signed. Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for the Englishman at the end of the season, as they look to make a sizeable changed to their own midfield.

Mount has suffered a frustrating season to date, struggling to find his best form and finding himself out of the team recently, scoring only three times in 24 Premier League appearances in 2022/23. That has further led to speculation about him leaving, with a key period now lying ahead in the coming weeks and months.

While the general consensus seems to be that the Chelsea man will move on in the summer, a more positive update has now emerged over his future.

Will Mount now stay at Chelsea?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Phillips gave an update on Mount's contract situation, saying the £80k-per-week ace could now end up staying put in west London beyond the summer transfer window:

"Right now, I'm told that the focus is on getting Mount back to full fitness and back to better form. We saw him come in against Real Madrid and he was of the only players that looked like a threat for Chelsea.

"That's what Chelsea want right now, They just want him to be on the pitch and playing well, but the talks will come and Chelsea are feeling a little bit more optimistic that the new set of terms that they're going to put on the table will hopefully be accepted by Mason Mount."

This would be great news for Chelsea, with Mount still someone who should be considered a key player moving forward, having been hailed as "unbelievable" by Joe Cole in the past. Granted, he is not having his best season – he got 11 goals and 10 assists last term, for example – but he is top-class player who is sure to return to top form sooner rather than later.

At 24, the Blues would also likely be losing him before his peak years have even arrived, so they must do all they can to reach an agreement over a new deal and make him feel like a crucial part of the club's success moving forward, at the very least to preserve the massive transfer fee he should be costing if he does move on.

Celtic Could Regret Losing ‘Unbelievable’ £4k-p/w Dynamo

Scottish champions Celtic continue to march on toward a second successive league title under manager Ange Postecoglou, with the 57-year-old having fashioned a truly rampant outfit at Parkhead.

A key feature in the Greek-Aussie's tenure thus far has been his "exceptional" recruitment record thus far, according to former Hoops skipper Scott Brown, with the Old Firm outfit having only recently been able to ease the loss of Croatian star, Josip Juranovic by landing a "definite upgrade" in the form of Alistair Johnston, as per club legend, Stiliyan Petrov.

That transfer success, in particular, has showcased just how effectively Postecoglou has been able to move players on and bring in players in recent times, with such astute deals having been vital in the Glasgow side's current domestic dominance.

That being said, however, there may be those that the former Yokohama F.Marinos will ultimately regret allowing to leave during his tenure, with Scotland international Ryan Christie among those to have thrived elsewhere in recent times.

The 28-year-old – who made the move to Bournemouth on a £2.5m deal back in the summer of 2021 – first proved vital in steering the Cherries to promotion from the Championship last season, providing 11 goals and assists in the league alone in that 2021/22 campaign.

The one-time Aberdeen ace has also since blossomed amid the step-up to the Premier League, having been hailed as a "really important player" for the south coast side by manager Gary O'Neil.

That being said, however, Postecoglou may well have had little choice but to cash on the 37-cap playmaker at the time with just over a left to run on his existing deal, while the Inverness native had at least been able to mark his mark at the club, providing 85 goal involvements in just 151 games in all competitions.

The same cannot be said of another ex-Celtic talent who is beginning to flourish south of the border, however, with Luca Connell now looking "unbelievable" for League One side, Barnsley, according to manager Michael Duff.

Where is Luca Connell now?

It could well be argued that it was something of a mistake for the Hoops to have allowed the young midfielder to depart without ever giving him a chance to impress, with the Liverpool-born maestro remarkably never making a first-team appearance during his three-year spell at Paradise.

Luca Connell for Bolton Wanderers

It had initially looked like a real coup when the Scottish Premiership side snapped up the then-teenager back in 2019, with Neil Lennon and co forking out around £350k in compensation to sign the youngster from Bolton Wanderers – amid rival interest from a 'number of clubs'.

Having been hailed as 'highly-rated' by Celtic's official website amid his arrival in Glasgow, Connell was ultimately something of a spare part over the next few years, after never being given a look in by either Lennon or Postecoglou.

That "bizarre" treatment of the 5 foot 11 ace – as per The Sun's Paul Dollery – culminated in his exit on a free transfer last summer, with the player himself admitting that the move to Scotland "didn’t go exactly as planned."

Since that release, however, the 22-year-old has thrived back in the EFL at Oakwell, having already scored twice and provided nine assists in 43 games for the promotion-chasing outfit this season.

The former Queen's Park loanee has made such an impression in his new surroundings that the aforementioned Duff suggested that the £4k-per-week dynamo will "definitely be a captain of a football club at some point", such is the "way he drives it and carries himself" both on and off the pitch.

For Celtic supporters to have not ever even seen the former Republic of Ireland youth international in action – unlike Christie – will be something of a headscratcher such is his current form, with it looking as if Postecoglou and co have let a truly exciting gem slip through their fingers without even raking in a transfer fee.

Everton Must Now Ditch ‘Vulnerable’ £70k-p/w Flop

Everton's 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace yesterday was largely an impressive result, restricting Roy Hodgson's resurgent outfit to just two shots on target all game.

Selhurst Park was largely silenced, as Sean Dyche once again took all the sting out of a Premier League clash to earn a vital point.

However, with Leicester City's turnaround win over Wolverhampton Wanderers elsewhere, the Toffees have still sunk into the relegation zone with just six games left to play.

It marked a negative afternoon after a positive performance, however, there was one standout villain for the visitors who was terrorised all game.

With Seamus Coleman still injured and Nathan Patterson perhaps too raw for the former Burnley boss to risk at this stage of the season, the 51-year-old instead opted to start Mason Holgate at right-back ahead of Ben Godfrey.

Having featured in that role for a full campaign during his loan at West Bromwich Albion, there should have been no issues with the 26-year-old stepping in against a 31-year-old Jordan Ayew.

However, it was one of many days to forget that the former Barnsley man has endured in a Royal Blue shirt, as he was run ragged.

How did Mason Holgate play vs Crystal Palace?

Having joined under Roberto Martinez as a promising teenager, Holgate slowly grew into a regular member of the first time who has survived the vicious managerial upheaval over the years following.

However, as time has gone on, the £70k-per-week dud has become more and more of a liability for his side, culminating in a 6.65 average Sofascore rating last season.

Yesterday this misery was only exacerbated as the Eagles targeted him all game.

Earning a 6.1 rating, the lowest of anyone on the pitch, the defender was dribbled past three times whilst losing nine of the 15 duels he competed in, via Sofascore.

mason-holgate-everton-transfer-crystal-palace

Having been booked on 37 minutes, many called for his substitution at half time given how unreliable he had been in the past. Holgate's history showcased hot-headed and thoughtlessness, often capable of giving a goal away or a needlessly heavy challenge to give the referee a decision to make.

Journalist Joe Thomas had even outlined it on Twitter, as he wrote: "Holgate is pushing a few yards further forward than the defenders alongside him and it's just creating a few extra yards of space for Palace to target. He and Ayew are engaged in battle down the right and it is where Everton look most vulnerable."

Unsurprisingly, this once again came to fruition, as Ayew breezed past the 6-foot dud only to be brought down. He was given his marching orders and his side were down to ten men, which fortunately did not cost them their point.

When immersed in a relegation battle, managers cannot afford liabilities when the margins are already so small. Whether Dyche manages to keep Everton up or not, he must expunge this Martinez error and get rid of Holgate once and for all.

West Ham’s £60k-p/w Shocker Let Moyes Down Vs Man City

West Ham United remain in real relegation trouble in the Premier League after David Moyes' side lost out 3-0 against title favourites Manchester City at the Etihad.

What happened in Manchester City vs West Ham?

Moyes opted to make a number of changes for the trip north, with the likes of Declan Rice, Nayef Aguerd and Tomas Soucek rested entirely, with one eye clearly on this weekend's game against Manchester United.

Despite the changes, the Hammers defended well in the first 45 and kept the scores level, but the Citizens showed their class in the second half and cruised to victory.

Nathan Ake was left unmarked to head in Riyad Mahrez's free-kick for the opening goal before Erling Haaland scored a record-breaking 35th league goal of the season by dinking the ball past Lukasz Fabianski from Jack Grealish's through ball.

Phil Foden rounded off the victory in the final minutes to send Pep Guardiola's side back top, while the Hammers remain just four clear of the bottom three.

While there were a number of poor performances from those in claret and blue on Wednesday, it was arguably Jarrod Bowen who struggled the most.

How did Jarrod Bowen perform vs Man City?

As per Sofascore, the England international would earn a shocking 5.9/10 rating for his performance, which saw him ranked as the worst player from both sides to feature in the game.

West Ham manager David Moyes.

During his time on the pitch, the right-winger mustered just 23 touches of the ball, completing a disappointing seven passes, both of which were fewer than goalkeeper Fabianski, who managed 34 touches and 16 passes.

Although City were perhaps always likely to dominate possession at the Etihad, Bowen has averaged 19.3 passes per game in the top flight so far this term, so it is clear that he was far more anonymous than usual on Wednesday night.

Unfortunately, on the rare occasions that the former Hull City man did see the ball, he was incredibly wasteful with it, as he lost possession five times, failed with his one cross attempt and was unsuccessful in all three dribble attempts against Guardiola's side.

However, on a night of few chances for the Hammers, the 26-year-old missed a golden opportunity to give Moyes' side the lead in the first half when the scores were level,

Thus, the £60k-per-week winger could certainly be considered to have cost the Scottish manager any hope he had of earning a surprise result against the champions-elect.

It has been an underwhelming campaign from Bowen, with just five goals and four assists to his name in the top flight, and he will be one of many who need to improve next season if the Hammers are going to distance themselves from another relegation battle.
